We’ve accomplished much over the last six months, especially in preventing massive cuts to programs vital to hungry and poor people. And—for the first time in history—a sitting president delivered a major speech on hunger, a clear sign that global hunger and malnutrition has moved higher in the administration’s list of priorities.

On February 1, more than 40 religious leaders from denominations and relief organizations around the country filled Bread for the World’s conference room in Washington, DC. The goal? To build the advocacy voice of church leaders for improved nutrition for mothers and children.

With the help of Bread activists, we got through 2011 without major cuts to programs focused on hungry and poor people. We’re thankful to all those who called, wrote, and visited their members of Congress to help protect these programs. But the fight is far from over.

Right now, Somalia is in the grip of gruesome hunger. Mothers are carrying their malnourished children long distances to refugee camps to get food. Many children have died along the way—and many more die in the camps due to severe malnutrition.

It’s up to the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction (or Super Committee)—a group of 12 members, three from each party in each house—to create a proposal that will cut trillions from the deficit. We want them to protect funding for programs for hungry and poor people.

More than 12 million people in the Horn of Africa face a humanitarian emergency—the most serious food insecurity situation in the world today. Parts of Ethiopia, Djibouti, Kenya, and Somalia are struggling with high food prices, political instability, and the worst drought to hit the region in 60 years—a deadly combination that’s likely to worsen over the coming months.

Since the 112th Congress convened this January, legislators have been closely focused on budget and spending issues. At press time, Congress had not yet finalized a spending bill to cover the remainder of fiscal year (FY) 2011, which ends September 30, 2011.

Bread for the World is beginning our 2011 Offering of Letters campaign – focused on making U.S. foreign assistance more effective in reducing hunger and poverty--in a political environment that is deeply partisan. But hunger is not a partisan issue so we are cautiously optimistic.
