Due to a phenomenal demand for tickets, Breakspoll have secured Cable’s sister nightclub, Relay for the Breakspoll 2012 event this Saturday 25th February!

We’ll be taking over the additional intimate space of Relay as well as the entire Cable venue, creating a 3 room behemoth of a clubbing experience!

Adding on an extra room of music not only means more space for partying but also new DJs being added to the lineup! On top of the existing lineup, we welcome DJ sets from Beat Assassins (back in a big way for 2012 with their own tracks plus more on Mofo Recordings), King Yoof (Sunz of Mecha and all round stalwart of the breaks scene), Jurassik vs Steve Thorpe (two legends of UK breakbeat promotion head it off) plus a live set from Broken Robots Monk3yLogic (psy-breaks goodness from these loveable rogues).

We’ve made a handful of extra tickets available from TicketWeb, and there will be plenty available on the door from 9pm on the night. See you on Saturday!!

We caught up with Rennie Pilgrem ahead of his main stage set at Southern Sounds festival on Saturday June 11th and asked him about his favourite artists right now, why he’s backing the 140 Jungle resurgence, and how he’s looking forward to taking breaks to a new height with his troupe of dancing pygmies, which we think is a collaboration with Inchie Ctrl-Z and Aston Freestylers.

At what age did you start DJing?

28, just after I started losing my hair.

How did you get into music production?

I bought a Korg M1 (keyboard with sequencer) and a few empty cans of paint. The old Rhythm Section tunes are so meaty on the beats as that paint was Dulux.

What is your motto in life?

Do as you would be done by.

How has the industry changed since you started?

Slightly! No more getting your music onto vinyl and feeling the buzz of hearing it that way for the first time. Obviously digital has changed music for ever

Tell us something we don’t know about Rennie Pilgrem?

I am about to launch an online Art Gallery called pocketgallery.co.uk which will sell mine and others abstract art

You are known as the pioneer of ‘Nu Skool Breaks.’ How did you develop an interest in breaks?

I was doing house music with a friend in the East End and we met Ellis Dee who played me house music but with hip-hop beats and there was no going back

What’s the latest with TCR? Any new or upcoming projects?

I am going to release a Soundtrack I’ve written for the film ‘The Fix’ and I am currently remixing Dopamine’s ‘Hold You’ with Pyramid. I am doing a lot of ‘Nu Jungle’, ‘Jungle Breaks’ (or whatever it’s called). I have a vocal version of a 140 track called ‘Erica’s Fix’ which will be out June 20th

What are your top 3 favourite tunes of all time?

Future Sound Of London ‘Papua New Guinea’
JD ‘Plastic Dreams’
A Guy Called Gerald ‘Voodoo Ray’

Top 3 tracks out at the moment?

Rennie Pilgrem ‘Erica’s Fix’ TCR
RackNRuin ‘Mindscape’ Sub Slayers
Pyramid ‘Blast Off’ Funkatech

What current producers do you think are really making waves at the moment?

RackNRuin
Pyramid
Skism

In what way do you think breaks has evolved over the years?

It’s gone round in a circle from being all about the beats, to become a bit techy to coming back to raw beats again

How have you incorporated the changes into your music?

Breaks has always taken-aboard influences from what’s going on around it, and currently it’s taking a leaf from Dub Step by going-up to 140 BPM and using some of their sounds and production techniques. Same way as when Nu Skool started we were obsessed with emulating the futuristic sounds of Drum n Bass

Out of all your albums, which one is your favourite?

I think Pilgremage because it has all my influences on there and was the first time I started playing bass guitar

Name three of your biggest influences…

Prince, Miles Davis and my Father who got me into music

If you were to throw a party which 3 people would top your Guestlist?

Whichever 3 people had the biggest Facebook network

Would you ever consider switching genres away from breaks?

Well I’ve been doing more funk-influenced stuff lately which has not just been breaks and my Soundtrack is much more abstract but those rhythms are not etched in my soul and I can’t see any going back.

If you had to live anywhere in the world, where would it be?

Majorca, because the water don’t taste like it ‘ought ta.

What can we expect from you this summer at Southern Sounds?

I have a troupe of dancing pigmies who will be pogoing in gay abandon to my irresistible music and I am going to smash the arse out of it with ‘140’ mayhem.

See Rennie smash the backside off a pygmy on June 11th on Clapham Common! Tickets for Southern Sounds are now on sale, and you can buy direct from Breakspoll and Crooked and save yourself a bundle! Buy Tickets Here.

The number 1 Breaks DJ in the World is also unsurprisingly the hardest to get hold of! But the Crooked crew managed to track and pin down the K-meister himself – Krafty Kuts! On Saturday 11th June 2011, Breakspoll and Crooked take over the Electronic Arena at the inaugural Southern Sounds music festival on Clapham Common, London. Southern Sounds will celebrate the very best in Southern Hemisphere music under a Northern Sky under the London skyline, and we are thrilled to bits that Krafty Kuts is headlining the Crooked stage. Heres his take on our interview…

How did the name Krafty Kuts come about?

I used to run a break-dance club and we had some decks on the side to play the music, any of us could spin some tunes. I found it more fun playing the music, tried to do some scratching over the instrumental parts of the tracks. Someone shouted out that was a little crafty and I was looking for a DJ name as I had really started to enjoy spinning tunes. I thought crafty …. Then with the cutting & scratching over the music cuts change on the spelling and hey presto …. Krafty Kuts was born !

You have a very good Aussie fanbase, have you ever thought about re-locating there?

Would love to … A wonderful way of life out there incredible weather, amazing people what more could one want. But I have a lovely family in the UK and they say home is where the heart is so I am happy at the moment.

You came 2nd in a DJ competition, with no previous experience, was that the point where you thought you would take up music as a career?

Certainly was I found something I could believe in and a passion and genuine love for music just grabbed me from the start. I collected loads of rare funk, jazz and hip hop records and started to study and learn how to do tricks on the turntables. With more & more practise I entered the DMC competitions and became instantly hooked.

Name one rubbish track that you would like to remix to improve?

Why would I want to improve a rubbish track more so make a good track better !

How is the summer lined up for Krafty Kuts?

Crazy … heaps of travelling loads of Festivals and lots of music to finish going to be a Summer to remember that’s for sure.

What are you working on at the moment?

Finishing touches on my forthcoming LP “Let’s Ride” a few cheeky edits & bootlegs for the Summer Festivals and ideas for some DJ mixes.

What has been the highlight of your career so far?

I am very lucky to have so many NYE in NZ playing to 20,000 just after an incredible fireworks display. But the one that stands out would have to be NYD in Sydney at Field day 25,000 people with Kurtis Blow & A.Skillz classic the crowd clapping to our Gimme The Breaks track unbelievable.

What does the future hold for Krafty Kuts? Where do you see yourself 10 years down the line?

Teaching young students about music, dj-ing etc. Writing movie scores, sourcing music for TV ads and still DJing but maybe not 3 times a week.

Which 3 tracks are staples in your sets at the moment?

Jack Beats – Up All Night (Krafty Kuts Re-Rub)
A.Skillz – California Soul
Krafty Kuts Feat Dynamite MC – Pounding

In your opinion, name one artist that is dominating the dance music industry today?

To be honest it has to be Deadmau5 I recently saw he had tee shirts in Foot locker and he is selling out every venue worldwide he plays at, the guy is on fire !

Any festival or country you haven’t performed in yet and would love to do so?

I would love to do the Fuji Rock Festival in Japan as this is one country I have never visited. Every one I have spoken to haved said how unique and crazy it is with just so much energy … Sounds like my vibe for sure.

Who would you get to play you in a movie of your life?

Jim Carey anyone who knows me would agree. My life has been one mad rollercoaster but always fun & good times.

Favourite festival tipple?

Coffee patron!

If you were invisible for a day, what would be the first thing you would do?

Go to Liverpool FC and watch and listen to a Kenny Dalglish do a team talk before a big game … Magic moment right there for me !

If you could be any music artist for one day, who would you choose to be and why?

Stevie Wonder a musical genius !

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

I am happy with everything in my life but if I could have one little cheeky treat it would be to scratch like Jazzy Jeff ….my idol !

Ahead of the massive Crooked & Breakspoll tent at Southern Sounds in just under 2 weeks time, we caught up with Matt Cantor from the Freestylers ahead of the duos peak time set in the Electronic Arena, and he unloaded on us with his deepest most heart-felt answers…

Which song would you have played at your funeral?

‘Return to Sender’ by Elvis Presley.

If you had one superpower for a day, what would it be?

To be able to fire lasers out of our nipples thus thwarting bank robbers and zapping kittens down from trees and stuff.

What’s lined up for Freestylers in the next six months?

I plan to get my Citadel lead figures down from my mum’s attic and try and get back into Warhammer. That reminds me I need to get down to the Games Workshop and pick up some octagonal dice.

Strangest request ever received while DJ’ing?

Do you mind if I throw this record at your head?

What is your life philosophy?

Never wear those dodgy Christmas boxer shorts my mum got me with Rudolf and friends on before going on a date.

What gave you that initial push into music?

Being fat and not knowing many girls at school.

Out of the all the tracks you play, which one never fails to disappoint the crowd?

‘Take on me’ by Aha.

Who is your most famous fan?

Natalie Portman was at one of our band gigs once in the states. At the after party I offered to buy her a beer. She blew me out naturally.

How did you and Aston meet?

We were working on different projects in the same studio. I didn’t know many jews at the time and being half jewish felt it might be a good idea to make some music with a fully fledged one. Aston fit that bill and then some.

How do you think your life would have gone if you hadn’t met?

I’d rather not answer that, Aston might read this.

Would you do a World Cup anthem if asked?

What get paid loads of money? Hear our record all over the TV? Get free tickets to all the games? Sounds awful.

What was the last lie you told?

The previous answer.

What do you do outside of music? How do you unwind?

I lock myself in my bedroom and cry.

What’s the best festival you’ve been to and the best one you have performed at?

Probably Glastonbury on both counts.

Favourite Movie?

‘Back to The Future’

What do you have planned for Summer 2011? Going on holiday?

I may pop over to Croatia to see some friends. Otherwise Queens Park’s pretty good for catching some rays.

Have you got a message for your fans at Southern Sounds?

Absolutely. A gigantic YO to all our fans at Southern Sounds. We love you like a fat kid loves cake!
