Just a day before I was due to travel to Breathing Space Thailand, the political protests in Bangkok were just beginning to reach their peak and watching the TV news I found myself wondering if I should change my plans to attend my addiction treatment at Breathing Space Thailand.

Of course, my government had issued a formal statement that said it was not advised of me to travel to Thailand. I rang my contact person in the Breathing Space therapy team and they reassured me that life at Breathing Space Thailand and in Chiang Mai remained unaffected by what was happening some 600km away in Bangkok. Nevertheless the decision was mine to make and in the end I decided to bite the bullet (pun intended) and travel to Chiang Mai.

I can say I was truly amazed to find my journey to Thailand was very smooth and without the slightest incident, except that a fellow passenger seated next to me on my flight suffered from some travel sickness! But I arrived in Bangkok on schedule and made the brief 50 minute flight up to Chiang Mai also without any problems whatsoever. I travel internationally on a regular basis and this journey was no different to any other international journey I have made in the past.

Since arriving in Thailand and in the aftermath of the protests I can say that life here has been without any kind of violent event, certainly I have not felt at risk in any way or, indeed, been at risk. The living environment at Breathing Space Thailand is exquisite and beyond the treatment setting, in Chiang Mai and during my time travelling around the region on excursions, I’ve been met by the beautiful, smiling faces of Thai people and this made me feel so safe and comfortable.

Due to the recent political protests here in Thailand, a reasonably large percentage of people making enquiries to the Breathing Space Thailand program have been asking if it’s safe to visit Thailand.

Breathing Space Thailand would like to reassure you that it is perfectly safe to travel to Thailand at this time. There were clients in attendance on our program throughout the recent political protest whilst additional clients arrived safely and without any hindrence to attend the program even during the climax of the political protest in Bangkok, during the month of May. None of our clients had any problems travelling toThailand or travelling up to Chiang Mai from Bangkok and none of our clients were presented with any risk whilst travelling or during their stay.

The protests took place in very specific parts of Bangkok and other areas of the country and it’s important to understand that life went on as normal outside of these protest zones, both in Bangkok and throughout the rest of Thailand.

Whilst many governments around the world continue to warn against travelling to Thailand because of the possibility of further political protest, based on the fact that there was no disruption for our clients who attended and travelled to attend our program during the recent protests we would encourage you not be put off the idea of attending the Breathing Space Thailand addictions clinic as it really is quite safe to travel and spend time here in Thailand.

Is Thailand Anymore Dangerous to Visit Than Europe or The US?

A good question to ask yourself:

When an invisible terrorist threat exists in Europe and the US, that we’re told can result in a terrorist attack occuring anywhere and at any time, is it really any more dangerous to spend time in Thailand, where political protest has primarily taken place in a confined protest zone or has been directed toward specific individuals connected to the current government?

Breathing Space Thailand has now received its first group of clients at their new drug and alcohol addiction treatment facility, near Chiang Mai in Northern Thailand.

Breathing Space Thailand provides excellent standards of individualized addiction treatment for a maximum of 11 clients, using a holistic mind, body and soul approach in a drug and alcohol addiction treatment program that runs from 1 to 3 months.

Breathing Space Thailand’s treatment program incorporates the 12 Step model of addiction recovery in conjunction with a psychotherapy program and a superb array of complementary therapies that include yoga, body balance, massage and a full range of spa treatments as a counter-point to the brain-work aspect of the psychotherapy program.

In offering a Whole Person approach to drug and alcohol addiction recovery, we felt it was important to include a wide range of complementary therapies in our addictions treatment program, many of which have a uniquely Eastern flavor, to support our clients in finding new ways to relax during early recovery from addiction. Many of our clients find themselves returning to a high-pressured working environment where finding quality time to relax and rejuvenate can seem like an impossibility. However, finding time to include healthy ways to relax and de-stress can make all the difference in maintaining a successful, ongoing recovery from addiction. Ultimately, recovery from drug or alcohol addiction requires change on a number of levels and the whole person (mind, body, soul) approach to addiction recovery enables us to encompass a full and complete process of change that yields the goals our clients rightfully expect.
