Exclusive! Anne Heche Talks F’ing Fours and Raising Boys

Last Thursday afternoon I needed a serious nap. With five kids, working, drop off, pick ups and sports, by the time the afternoon hit, I was exhausted. And I still had an interview with Anne Heche, who has appeared in several movies, including Six Days and Seven Nights with Harrison Ford, and TV shows like Hung, regarding her new series for NBC, Save Me, that starts airing Thursday, May 23. Celebrity interviews can be nerve wracking sometimes because you never know what you are going to get. With Anne and my sleepy self, Breezy Mama was very happy to soon be immersed in an uber-honest chat about motherhood. From the challenges of raising a 4 year old to having boys and more, here’s what went down.

Hi –

I’m sorry I’m a little bit late! How are you doing?

I’m good — I’m having a little bit of that afternoon ‘feeling tired’… I’m sure YOU know what I mean. How are you doing?

Today is actually a fun day. I just picked up my son from school, which I can do when I’m not shooting [my television show, Save Me]. And he is now bouncing around and we are watching our two dogs almost eating our tiny little kitten [laughs]. That’s what we were doing when I was late [to speak with you].

In theory, I saved a kitten’s life, right?

[Laughs] It’s so funny. The kitten has already ruined the house! He’s 2 pounds and [the dog] Jack is a Golden Retriever and the kitten has it all figured out. He can sit in the middle of the room and the dogs completely bow down to him. It’s so funny.

Since you have two sons [11 year old son, Homer, with Coley Laffoon, and 4 year old son Atlas, with James Tupper], any advice for raising boys?

Best Time of Day for Taking Kids to the Movie Theater

One of my all time favorite outings growing up was when my dad took me to the movies. Nothing compared to being transported into an imaginary world while munching on popcorn and discussing our opinions afterward. Flashforward to 2004, my husband and I took our first born daughter to see Curious George in theaters while I was nine months pregnant with our second child. Taking a two year old meant lots of worries running through our minds during this first time adventure: Will she be able to sit through it? Will we have to walk out? Will it make her cry?

In fact, it was one of the most magical parenting moments that neither my husband nor I will ever forget. As the lights went down and the screen lit up, so did our toddler daughter’s face. Reaching for Daddy’s hand on one side and mine on the other, the three of us sat back and got whisked away into the fun.

The Ota Family at the 2nd Annual Mile for Maddie

It’s been two years since 5-year-old Maddie James captured the hearts of the nation with her love of the ocean and the animals living in it. For those of you who have been long time Breezy readers, you’ll remember how Maddie’s life tragically ended when an inoperable tumor was found. As soon as she heard the devastating news, her mother, Kajsa, knew that she wanted Maddie’s legacy to live on with Dana Point’s the Ocean Institute. Kajsa was determined to have their new building, the Seaside Learning Center, be named after her little girl; she just needed one million dollars to make that dream a reality. The dream became the community’s dream, and then spread. . . to town after town, into various states, and then nation was caught up in the love of Maddie James. In three short months, one million dollars was raised, and the Maddie James Seaside Learning Center became a reality.

Let me start by saying that yesterday I spent my Sunday being barfed on by one of my two year old twins in a crowded restaurant at breakfast with my whole family. Naturally, we got her home and both of us changed clothes, but she wanted me to hold her throughout most of the remainder of the day. Nine years into this motherhood thing, I still love that feeling that I can provide comfort to someone just by getting to cuddle with them. So, I just put on some old clothes, braced myself and endured two more rounds of being barfed on. That’s how I roll. Today, I’m in Los Angeles at an event for NBC Universal and soon found myself face to face with style icon Rachel Zoe who not only has her own Bravo TV Show, but is now producing a new show, Resale Royalty, for the Style Network about the success of a Women’s Closet Exchange started by Sue McCarthy that I’m excited to check out.
