Whenever I create art pieces, I take the opportunity to truly explore subject matter that interests me, as well as delve deeper into things like composition and color (as opposed to "designing" graphic works for clients with rigid brand standards). This piece touches on the topic of long distance relationships (something very close to me at the time this was created), and how even with all of our technology for keeping in touch, nothing can compare to seeing that special someone in person.

I've been a fan of The Shins ever since seeing Garden State (not surprising), but rather than reviewing this single for you, I really wanted to point out the beautiful cover art for "Port of Morrow".

Cover for The Shins' "Port of Morrow" by Jacob Escobedo

The cover art was created by Jacob Escobedo, a talented designer with an impressive client list including Gnarls Barkley, Etnies, Adult Swim and obviously, The Shins. Check out more of Jacob's work over on his tumblr, jacobescobedo.com.

The fourth studio album is set to release this upcoming March; listen to the single "Simple Song" by The Shins after the jump. Via

     Simple Song by theshins

It was a difficult decision to leave 3 Roads Media; they are an amazing agency and I could not be happier with the time I spent there and thank them for everything I learned, every opportunity they provided me, and most of all, for the support they gave me with my new career choice.

I met a lot of great people involved in the local Denver art/design scene and hope to continue working with many of them on some exciting new projects in 2012. In fact, I will be selling a poster printed by Black Cloud Workshop - check back for details soon.

Less significantly, I got a new macbook (amazing machine, definitely able to do so much more now) and moved to a new apartment.

Thank you to those who read this blog and support my design/artwork; I hope you all have a great New Year!

Best,
Brennan

Regardless, I recently wrapped up one of my all-time favorite promotional projects! I worked with amazing local Denver printer/designer/amigo, Roger Maynor with PUBLIC Letterpress to create these Halloween themed coasters. Roger and I had played around with the idea of some sort of promotional art project that could show off his intricate laser-cutting capabilities and my skills as an illustrator. We wanted something customizable, unique and despite being holiday themed, something useful that people wouldn't just throw out after October.

After putting our heads together, we landed on the idea of Halloween coasters. I designed and illustrated the set of four: Frankenstein's monster, the sea monster from the black lagoon, a Dia de los Muertos inspired skull, and not to be left for dead, a zombie. I wanted to avoid the typical orange and black color scheme, and so we went with a bright, slime green. The final coasters were 3 sheets of paper sandwiched together: a thick black layer, bright green accent, then the laser-cut layer on top, like some sort of beautiful non-edible Oreos.

I couldn't be happier with the positive feedback we received on these, and hope to continue illustrating/designing top-level projects in the future.

His style is very distinct and easily stands out in the crowded arena of ultra-talented illustrators. Alex uses constrained, yet well thought-out color palettes in all of his work and one of my favorite details is his use of line and lack there of (especially because a lot of my favorite illustrators heavily outline their work, as is the case with Tyler Stout, for example). Alex Westgate certainly uses gestural lines, but seems to stay away from outlining when possible, often only drawing in crucial details like characters' smiles.

If you're into stylish, minimalistic and very happy, fun illustrations and posters, be sure to check out Alex Westgate's work. You can view his portfolio here, follow him on Twitter here or watch him Dribbble away here. The project was created and currently curated by Evan Stremke and includes some amazing creatives (a few of my favorites) like Dan Cassaro, The Heads of State, Jon Ashcroft, and many, many more (see the full roster of participating creatives, for some major inspiration, here).

The first project I saw like this was the 50 and 50 project which featured the 50 state mottos designed by 50 amazing designers & illustrators. Funny enough, that project was created by Young Jerks aka Dan Cassaro, one of the aforementioned Momentus Project contributors.

If you're itching to see some great art, and possibly learn and/or be reminded of some crucial parts of United States history, be sure to check out The Momentus Project.
