During our preschool theme on Veterinarians and taking care of pets, the students made homemade dog treats. The treats are made from regular foods commonly eaten by humans but are nutritional additions to a dog’s diet. I found this recipe here. I brought some treats home for my own dog and she loved it!

Low Fat Carrot Dog Treats

Ingredients:

1 med. banana (ripe, please)
1 c. shredded carrots
1/4 c. unsweetened applejuice
1/8 c. water (maybe more, as needed)
1 1/2 c. whole wheat flour (keep some handy for rolling)–We did not rolling it. We only flattened it on the pan.
1 c. rolled oats

Directions:

Start off by preheating your oven to 350 degrees, lightly spraying a baking sheet with nonstick cooking spray and sprinkling a little flour onto the surface you’re planning to use to roll out the dough.

In a medium bowl, mash up the banana and mix in the shredded carrots. To the carrot and banana, add the water and applejuice. Stir. Next, add the water and applejuice. Stir all of the ingredients together until they are thoroughly combined.

Using your hands, knead the mixture until a dough forms. Dump the dough onto the lightly floured surface that you prepared earlier. Roll it out until it’s about a half inch thick. Using a cookie cutter (bone shapes are fun!) or the rim of a small glass, cut into 3? pieces. Place the pieces onto your lightly sprayed baking sheet.

Bake the dog treats for 25 minutes.

Before “serving”, let them cool completely. Here’s a tip that you may find useful: If your dog likes a little more crunch to his treats, then turn off the oven and let the treats cool there overnight.

This recipe makes about 24 low fat treats. They’ll actually last about 3 weeks, if stored in the fridge and up to 6 months, if frozen.

I saw this experiment on another blog. Click here to see it. During President’s week in the preschool classroom, we had to try this experiment, too.

We put a dollar bill on the floor and slightly folded it in half just enough so one half of the dollar was not laying completely flat on the floor.

We held a magnet close to the corner of the dollar bill but not touching it. The magnet raised the corner of the dollar up so that it then connected.

The reason behind this magnetism: money is printed with magnetic ink to deter counterfeiting.

They loved this experiment and said the glove was waving at them, so that’s why I titled this blog post this way.

I put 2-3 plastic regular-sized spoons of baking soda in a glass jar. I poured in a small amount of vinegar, about 2-3 teaspoons. I attached the rubber glove over the mouth of the jar and watched to see what happened as the fizz started rising in the jar.

As the students said: The glove is waving at us. It stood straight up on top of the jar.

As we continue our Community helper themes in the preschool classroom, the students are learning about the Veterinarian.

They set up their own Veterinarian office using stuffed animal dogs. They set out small bowls and dishes to pretend to feed the dogs. They made crates and cages on the shelf for the dogs to sleep. They pretended to examine them.

They are excited for the end of the week when a real veterinarian comes to visit and brings her little dog to show.

The pre-kindergarten class at my school combined their Construction theme with their math lesson to learn their number of the week.

They cut out a dump truck and glued to another piece of paper. Then they cut out small black dots to represent rocks to fill the dump truck. The number of the week was 24, so they had to glue 24 rocks (black dots) either in the back of the dump truck or dumping out on the ground behind the truck.

This activity is a clever way of teaching how many as well as allowing the students to have fun with construction and trucks.

She used black paper and cut out the shape of a tooth. Then she attached the black paper to white paper on the back so that the white paper shows through the cut out section of the black paper.

It looks like a tooth xray.

The students talked about mail boxes and how mail is delivered. They learned that each piece of mail must have a stamp and be correctly addressed with the name and full address, including city, state, and zip code. They practiced learning their own addresses.

Then we brought the Post Office lesson into the 21st Century by talking about a faster way to deliver mail: email. The students were very familiar with email and knew that it can be checked on the computer and on the phone.

They even got to send out some emails. Some of the students took turns typing emails on my phone to Susan (retired kindergarten teacher) in Texas and Jenny (and her preschool class) in Australia.

We received replies back from Susan with picture attachments of her horses and a chicken. The students loved seeing those real farm animals. Thank you for taking time out of your day to communicate with my preschool students.

We will wait until tomorrow to see replies from Jenny. We were able to talk about our daytime is her nighttime and our winter is her summer.

This is a great activity to teach mail carriers as community helpers and various ways of sending and receiving mail. It also allows students to learn geography and different cultures.

The preschool students made Valentine heart people.

They cut out a heart shape and drew a face on it. Then they cut out four long strips of paper and folded each strip in an accordion fold, back and forth and back and forth. When they let go of the folded strips of paper, it made a zigzag pattern.

They glued the ends of each strip of paper to their big heart. Two strips were the arms and two strips were the legs.

This was a great activity for fine motor activity and exercising their fingers to fold the paper.
