Hole - Malibu

This is a song I’ve decidedly mixed feelings about. To me, it’s staying at a mate’s place, staring at the teev whilst this plays on rage at 5 in the morinng, wondering what the hell you’re gonna do next. It’s being subjected to this (and the entirety of Celebrity Skin) at a not-comfortable volume en route to a country football grand final. It’s polished and radio-friendly and sounds like the lost Rumours-era Fleetwood Mac single Love intended it to be (indeed, she wrote it with Stevie Nicks in mind). But…

I find the lyrics waver between banal and enlightening, as any good pop song does…they implore, rather than condemn:

Help me please, burn the sorrow from your eyes
Oh, come on, be alive again
Don’t lay down and die…
I can’t be near you
The light just radiates

It’s a dialogue, the push-me-pull-you of a destructive relatiionship. Displaying empathy, while outlining the need to escape, hoping the act itself will solve everything. But there’s a difference between reaching escape velocity, and simply crashing and burning. And goodness knows California’s full of burnouts.

If you say you’re on your way to where you want to go, then why keep looking back?

The performances are at best a mixed bag. Jackie Earle Haley’s Rorschach is probably the standout - at the screening I attended his “you’re locked in here with me” got the sole spontaneous cheer, and he managed to make Rorschach’s “Rorschach voice” seem unforced and realistic. Billy Crudup’s Dr. Manhattan is eerie and entertaining, and Patrick Wilson’s Nite Owl is passable to decent. Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s Comedian is an actor in search of good direction who doesn’t get it. Matthew Goode’s Ozymandias is just too joyfully evil for the turn to surprise a newcomer or satisfy someone already familiar with the story, and Malin Akerman’s Silk Spectre is terrible, one of the worst performances I have seen in years; she absolutely wrecks every scene she’s in and given how many important scenes have Silk Spectre in them, that’s a lot of the most important parts of the movie.

But even when the actors are good, the dialogue is just terrible, be it Moore’s or no. Haley and Crudup can get away with it because of their characters, but some of the dreck the other characters get is just… ugh. The controversial “plot changes” are barely a blip, and frankly the new bits of storyline work just as well.

Overblown, overlong crap.

This is basically why I’m very hesitant about Man of Steel. No doubt I’ll go and see it, but I don’t hold out much hope on it being a subtle, nuanced rendering of the Superman mythos. I mean, I quite liked the Dawn of the Dead remake, but 300 was unmemorably average, while Sucker Punch I gave up on thirty minutes in.

If we’re going to start blasting IMAX shots of (semi-)naked medical/science officers for no reason besides because they could, at least give us a few Bones pics. But seriously, it was horribly ridiculous and we’re glad they learned from their silly decision to force the one new female character with speaking lines to strip in front of Captain Kirk.

The crew of the Enterprise haven’t evolved much since we last saw them. They’ve been going on missions but Kirk is still Kirk, and Spock is still Spock. And that’s pretty much it because this is the Kirk and Spock show. Seriously. I actually felt sorry for the rest of the cast because no one else had a chance to shine or even really act together as a crew. Uhura got to speak Klingon, Sulu got to sit in the captain’s chair and sound badass for about 10 seconds, Scotty shut down an enemy ship and opened an air lock, Bones got to say funny things, and Chekov…ran around a lot. What a waste of a tremendous group of actors. I won’t go into Dr. Carol Marcus all that much but suffice to say, her purpose in the film was minimal and they made her stand around in underwear for absolutely no reason. We didn’t even see an actual display of the intelligence she was touted to have…

Star Trek Into Darkness was incredibly hollow for me. Not just as a Trek fan but as a moviegoer. I’m all for mindless action films now and then but that’s not what Star Trek is in our culture. At least, it didn’t used to be. When you think back on the legacy of the previous films, there was always a point or lesson to be had, even if it was kind of lame (The Final Frontier, I’m looking at you). This film had none of that. The only possible thing I could take away from it was a lesson in friendship but even that seems trite considering we don’t really get a chance to see the crew interact in such a way. They’re too busy dealing with explosions, you see?

ATTENTION GEEK GIRLS IN MELBOURNE! Do NOT go to comics r us. They’ve been starting to refuse some women service because “girls can’t possibly be into advanced comics like batman”. The ringwood store owner has also handed out free chupa chumps to girls he finds attractive and talk to him (I’ve been one of them). They have also been refusing to look at resumes handed in by women despite being understaffed. Please, if you’re looking for a place to buy comics in Melbourne support and buy from All Star Comics and Minotaur, both of these establishments are run by amazing people.

Ugh. I’ve always been weirded out by the guy at the Comics’R’Us Ringwood store, so this doesn’t surprise me. (If, it is in fact, the same guy.) But the other stuff…good lord. It’s the 21st century guys, come on, get with the program.

So yeah, signal boost.

The philosophies in Star Trek are kinda part of the actual setting. If you don’t get that, why are you allowed to make Star Trek movies.

Sigh. The whole point of Star Trek is that it’s philosophical. If you don’t want philosophical Science Fiction, there’s plenty of that for you to enjoy, but Star Trek is philosophical. Philosophy is part of Star Trek’s DNA, and if you’re given the captain’s chair, you’d better damn well respect that.

The challenges that Mr. Evans faces, Mr. Downey said, are familiar to the profession and all too real: to reconcile his background as an “almost blue-collar Boston Joe” with his Hollywood trajectory; to see “Captain America” keep pace with the successes of “Iron Man” and “Thor”; and to measure up to his acting idols, a feeling Mr. Downey vividly remembered from making the 1989 drama “True Believer” with James Woods. (“If he told me to go eat the camera lens,” Mr. Downey said of Mr. Woods, “I would have.”)

But Mr. Evans will work through these issues, Mr. Downey said, because “he has the main tool, the main arrow in his quiver already, and it’s that he’s communicative.” He added: “How do we all manage our anxiety? By not keeping it a secret.”

Chris Hemsworth, the “Thor” star who was a relative unknown before his Marvel debut became a $400 million worldwide hit this spring, said he and Mr. Evans had talked about their anxiety issues on the “Avengers” set.

“We make the assumption,” Mr. Hemsworth said, “that no one else is going through what we are, and I said, ‘Of course everyone does. But any kind of courage or bravery is not about being fearless. It’s about doing it despite the fear.”

From his therapy sessions Mr. Evans learned that “it is really good just to talk about what you’re struggling with,” he said.
