A Historic Gathering.  Last month about 1,000 Chinese leaders that represented about 10 million believers in Asia joined us for three days of meetings. The group is called “Homecoming”. Many came from across the world to be our friends.  They had no agenda but to love and to relate to us.  Can you believe that?  Can you imagine so many Asians in the midwest?  We did not do standard “teaching” sessions, but allowed the Holy Spirit to lead our time. So many things happened!  

In one session, we heard their stories how they had lost businesses or been imprisoned for Christ. Another session, their leaders washed our feet with their tears.  In yet another session, they helped us facilitate reconciliation in our church family.  We all felt we were learning how to related to each other as Family—seeing each other as brothers and sisters in the Lord, not simply through carrying out a vision or a function. Family means we are each indispensable. We need to know we are accepted and supported. God was birthing something in our IHOPKC community. Since then our classes have had moments of weeping and reconciliation. Our prayer services, hugs and warm smiles. God has been opening up our hearts in new ways.

What God did in Brian’s heart.  The Lord showed me how I was lonely in a few ways—that I had neglected opening my heart to the Lord because I’ve been too busy trying to perform and be accepted by the quality of the work I do.  The Lord also solidified in me that IHOPKC is my church family, and I am a son in this house—that my presence matters and I am carrying something IHOPKC needs! 

What God did in Joannie’s heart. She led worship with the team during most of the sessions on her stringed instrument, the Er-Hu.  One leader said that “she washed the room” with her music. Her heart opened to Father in a new way. She embraced being a mom the week following. She cried in our house, asking God to forgive her for ways she resisted motherhood.  Since then, it seems God has given her increased tenderness toward our children.  Joannie also enjoyed the fellowship with the worship team.  They had no planning sessions before worship sets—they only shared their hearts. And the sets were amazing! 

As you can tell so much happened.  We don’t have language for it all, but we are thankful for the Holy Spirt’s work among us that started and will continue on!  Let Him have His Bride and His Family.  Amen!      —Brian and Joannie

Joannie:  Something fun: She had a birthday in August and was celebrated by students and family.  Work-related: She continues to enjoy her role in teaching music theory and piano while serving the new cohort of Chinese-speaking students who arrived in August. This month, she began mentoring two young gals in coaching worship teams and administrating her online class.                              

Brian: Something fun: He played Top Golf with some friends and got back into working out. Recently, he enjoyed meeting regularly with a friend on Fridays, sharing life and praying together. Work-related: He began teaching the book of Isaiah again to seniors in our ministry school. Also, he is working with a great team of pastors who oversee the pastoral ministry of 26 small groups studying the end times at the Center for Biblical End Time studies.                                                     

Isaac:  He enjoys gliding down the road on his balance bike and continuing gymnastics. He went back to school last week and he loves organizing his binder and building and creating things.  

Hosanna: She enjoys dancing and telling jokes. She frequently tells us, “I’m just joking.” She started preschool two days a week and loves the socialization. Finally, she goes to the school where her big brother goes.

We are deeply grateful for our time in Asia. 

The kids did a lot with family. Most nights, we’d cram around the dinner table together for dinner.  They ate all kinds of food, like hot pot and tried amazing kinds of fruit.  They liked pedaling the tricycle in small alleyways. We swam at a local pool, each grew in speaking Chinese, and Isaac rode with his uncle on a moped!  (That freaked me out slightly.)  Joannie and I also got to go on a few dates and watch a movie with Chinese subtitles.  Finally, Joannie supported me to minister in several conferences while I was away from the family.  She gets the gold star for her efforts!  I’m not sure we would schedule everything the same way as we both felt we were working pretty hard, but we did capitalize on the opportunities. We both feel like we need a vacation now!

As far as ministry, we will post a video update with some testimonies over email if you would like to hear more.   Here are some brief highlights: 

At Taitung House of Prayer, our family joined some other IHOPKC missionaries and trained participants from several local churches in corporate prayer.  We also met several indigenous pastors in that area. 

At Bread of Life Church in Shilin, Taipei Brian trained 100 youth on the Biblical view of marriage. The workshop was highly interactive.  This was my third time to serve at this location with a team from IHOPKC. 

At TransMission Church in central Taiwan Brian taught eight sessions on growing in prayer. They had around 120 people attending each session, which greatly encouraged me.  I personally ministered to 25 people in prayer sessions. About ten people were touched by the Spirit in significant ways and we saw one salvation. 

Brian traveled to Hong Kong and stayed with our friends at Ebenezer House of Prayer.  I taught several tools of prayer to help them grow their prayer services and commitments from their staff. They operate a prayer room mostly on Sunday afternoons. 

What a fruitful trip!  Thank you for all who gave towards this trip, prayed for us and encouraged us.  We are changed from it all—-and very thankful!

Both Joannie and I enjoy serving as faculty at the International House of Prayer University. Every year we are amazed at the quality and caliber of students God brings to IHOPU.  These ones are a testimony that God is doing something remarkable in the earth—who would give their time, their energy, their money to grow in prayer and impact missions?  He truly is calling a generation to know Him. Well, we must keep saying this to you, but by partnering with us, you are touching the far corners of the earth and strengthening the Church in that location.

The particular week I was with them, we focused on getting to know Jesus and His end-time plan.  We spent the first sessions addressing misconceptions that keep believers from studying the book of Revelation. One misconception is that we “can’t understand it.”  The interns learned to take the prophecy “literal” unless the text indicates otherwise.  They were surprised how much easier it was to understand, and how the prophets, gospels and epistles all told the same storyline. 

Another misconception was that the book of Revelation is “irrelevant for today.” The interns saw that this prophecy is first and foremost about Jesus and His excellence (Rev. 1:1)— something important to us!  Secondly, it’s about His plan that He will oversee in the future when transitioning the earth from under the power of Satan to His direct rule—-this certainly is exciting!  (Rev. 4:1; 5:8; 6:1; 8:1–2, 8; 11:15–18)

Jesus’ plan, found in Rev. 6-22, uses a variety of pressures upon the earth. Without violating anyone’s free will, God will bring the greatest amount of good possible, including a great end-time harvest of souls, time for the wicked to repent and the perfect environment for the Church to grow into maturity. Students were able to dialogue with the Lord why He would do things the way He tells us.  It’s so important to process the “why” of God’s plan now so that we are not shocked, offended and unable to partner with Him now and in the future.

Joannie’s Online Course in Mandarin 

This month Joannie started two online classes, totaling 28 students. Her goal is to train worshippers to use the keyboard more effectively in corporate and devotional settings.  Students log-in from Taiwan, China, NZ, Canada, America and Hong Kong.  Here is some recent feedback about her class (translated):

Brian’s New Role

In 2017, I had been talking to the Lord about my life at IHOPKC.  Things had begun to change for me: a season focused on inner healing was tying up. I felt more hungry for deeper connection with others here and a need for a further challenge. A few months later, the Lord answered me. I was offered a role in a new initiative on our base recently launched called, “The Center for Biblical End Time Studies” (CBETS).  (https://www.ihopkc.org/cbets/) .

CBETS presently has 26 small groups that are systematically going through all 150 chapters about Jesus’ 2nd coming and discussing those passages. It will take us three years to get through them, and then we will start again. IHOPKC’s goal is to be resource to the Body of Christ by providing excellent materials and training regarding the person of Jesus and His end time plan. My role is helping build pastoral care in the onsite community and assist in training others about Jesus and His end time plan.

This module, we are going through Isaiah 46-66 and sections of Jeremiah. We have had an amazing response:

327 on-site participants in small groups

300 auditors

100+ offsite participants who meet online in small groups

Prophetic and Healing ministry to around 4,000 individuals who attended the conference

My favorite testimony from the week was of a woman who attended last year’s conference but did not tell anyone her story until this year.  She had stage four terminal cancer and went to receive prayer. After returning home later that week, she visited her doctor—discovering she had been completely healed!  This year she brought her adopted Russian son who the Lord touched and he gave his life to Him. God is healing bodies and families.

As you read this, you may be wondering what Joannie and I were doing?  In our small part, we spent our time at the Hub, a connecting place where we listened to and prayed for people interesting in growing in the Lord after the conference. It was a joy to hear their stories.

The following week, we hosted an Immerse training and around 60 participants did an additional week with us.  I was touched by the spiritual hunger and the intense stories from our group—

• A sincere man, who had ten stepfathers as a child, confessed struggling with alcohol, having stopped three times to buy drinks on his drive to Kansas City—he positioned his heart before God and grew in receiving God’s love and in prayer. His countenance looked much better.
• A dear woman grew in experiencing God’s love over condemnation after growing up neglected as a child and divorced after an abusive marriage.
• A tender father whose daughter ran away with a young man and is no longer talking to him. He began forgiving and blessing them. His countenance changed and he said he felt hope for the first time.

This group was so hungry they did not leave the rooms after each session. I had one individual talking to me on my way to the car. I was afraid he would follow me home!  I’ve never had that happen before.

A diverse group of students-

Some slept during the day and prayed at night;

Others were “externs” busy in ministry;

Some were traditional students with more time to  study!

We made it—we discussed the book of Isaiah where we got to know God and His end time plan to save Israel, restore the earth, bring in the Gentile nations to love Him while revealing  Jesus’ excellence. Yes, God will soon do all this!

What students were saying…

• “I love the depth of Isaiah and how it ties into God’s plan.”

• “I grew in the knowledge and love of God through studying and mediating on God’s judgments and who He is as the coming Judge.”

• “Brian is a great teacher, communicator and very passionate. He’s really great at taking difficult things and making it simple. We like his tender heart.”

Some interesting facts about Isaiah.

1. The NT quotes Isaiah more than any other OT book (472 times). Psalm and Genesis are second and third at 454 and 260 times. This is worth studying!
2. Isaiah has more information about what Jesus will do when He returns than any other book of the Bible.
3. More than any other prophet, Isaiah reveals both Jesus in His power and gentle servanthood as King in His first and second comings.

The class is now “over,” but the mark on the students’ hearts will remain.

We are  so thankful for the rich time with family God gave us.  Also, the Lord allowed us strengthen the Church and form lasting Kingdom relationships with dear believers in several churches. Even with the new schedules and environments for our young kids and the added work behind it all, we have return feeling refreshed, inspired with new vision for our family. We are deeply grateful.

Regarding time with family, we did a lot together.  The kids formed special bonds with their grandparents and uncle so that soon after arriving, they would shout their names throughout the apartment where all seven of us stayed.  For those of you interested in culture, we ate a lot of take-out, rode mopeds, air-dried our laundry, enjoyed the numerous indoor play places as the weather is over a humid 90 degrees in Tainan City.  The kids had many diverse experiences: they met extended family members and local shop keepers; spent time at the beach and in the mountains; saw octopus and touched sheep. The list goes on and on…

As far as ministry, we visited three churches and were able to serve the Bride of Christ in Asia.

At Bread of Life Church in Shilin, Taipei we trained 100 youth on Biblical view of marriage and Jesus’ second coming. This was our second time to serve at this location with a team from IHOPKC.

Then our entire family travelled to Hong Kong and stayed with our friends at Ebenezer House of Prayer.  We did a conference on growing in the prophetic, evangelism and also harp and bowl (worship) training.  We saw several salvations in our outreaches, accurate prophetic words and young people encouraged and strengthened in the Lord.

What a fruitful trip!  Thank you for all who gave towards this trip, prayed for us and encouraged us. 

We are changed from it all—-and very thankful!
