Thanks to @SmartCares and Abbie for the tickets to the #SmartLadyGaga The Born This Way Ball at the newly opened SM Mall of Asia Arena last May 21. It was a 2-day sold-out concert, which had its own controversies and exaggerations, but it went so incredibly well, no one could have stopped Lady Gaga's awesomeness. I didn't expect it to be that good - the opening (DJ Zedd), the production, the set, the effects, Lady Gaga herself, her costumes, her moves, everything. Good job and congratulations :) Here are some photos we took during the concert.

SMART's Live More Anthem - "It's Your Life"

SMART has recently launched the Live More anthem entitled "It's Your Life" (formerly "It's Your Time"), which was used in the Smart Live More TVC. SMART, the country's biggest network, actually commissioned international composers James Banbury and Pete Davis, who have previously collaborated for other popular brands such as Marriot Hotels, Tropicana and Cathay Pacific, to make the song.

Inspired by the Live More message, the Component Music artists, based in Hong Kong (Banbury) and Sweden (Davis), worked across time zones to deliver the stirring soundtrack to SMART's new campaign, as shown in the SMART TVC. Pete Davis also worked on scores for popular movies such as Moulin Rouge while James Banbury worked on Coyote Ugly. James has also arranged strings for artists such as U2, Depeche Mode and Snow Patrol, while Pete has programmed and performed on records by Gwen Stefani, Bjork and The Spice Girls. And because of their experience and skill, they've come up with such a nice and catchy song for the SMART Live More campaign.

After watching and hearing the song, I can't help but play it again, and again, because the song is catchy and the lyrics is simply inspiring. When SMART launched its Live More campaign, with the message of "living your live to the fullest," and seizing the opportunities, it instantly clicked for me. Because I can identify with it. That's what I have been doing. Sometimes, it's really about trying new things. Don't be afraid to try new food, go and travel to new destinations, meet new people...because you will never know, unless you let go, and live more.

The Philippines brings "FUN" to CNN

The Department of Tourism (DOT) has released a new TV commercial (TVC) via global media giant CNN as part of its international campaign. The 30-second TVC material starts off by saying “We asked people why it’s more fun in the Philippines….” and then features several creative memes, all of which were made and contributed by the public.

“We were inspired by the number of memes generated online, so we decided to make a TVC material out of them. At present, there are already 12,000 versions of the campaign. When we started, there were just three. This is an astounding response from the public, and we wanted to showcase some of the best memes in our TVC which we felt represented both the beauty and fun in our country and people,” Tourism Secretary Ramon R. Jimenez, Jr. said.

The phenomenal and viral success of “It’s more fun in the Philippines” is greatly due to the people who have participated in the campaign with their catchy and witty versions, each proving to the world how it is indeed more fun in the Philippines. “This material is based on genuine photos of real fun experiences in the Philippines,” says Jimenez. The new TV ad is just but one of the initiatives that DOT is planning to roll out within the year as it targets 10 million tourist arrivals in 2016.

In keeping with the campaign’s interactive theme, the TV ad ends by asking the viewers to come explore the Philippines and challenging them with the question: “What will you come up with?” The material’s fun factor is aided by the soundtrack, which takes off from Boney M’s “Gotta Go Home,” after the DOT secured the clearance to use the same. The TVC soundtrack is not based on the popular dance hit “Barbra Streisand” of Duck Sauce and also does not involve Apl.de.ap of the Black Eyed Peas. However, Apl is a very strong supporter of Philippine tourism as he reaches out to Filipino-Americans with various projects.

The TVC is currently airing on CNN, which is very timely as CNN also features the country through a special segment called “Eye on the Philippines.” The roll-out also coincides with the Philippine hosting of the 45th Annual Meeting of the Asian Development Bank Board of Governors, which will be held from May 2 to 5 in Manila. Both the TVC and “Eye on the Philippines” are being aired worldwide.

Last Saturday morning, I trooped to Macapagal with my cousin Lester (who's a total car geek) to check out the MINI Cooper Club of the Philippines' 2nd E.B. or meetup, upon the invitation of my friend Ken, who happens to be the President of the club. Here are the cars that came. More classics this time around than that of the last Sierra Madre Fun Run. But all's cool, MINIs are MINIs. They rock! :)

Besides the awesomeness that is packed under the hood and in the car, an interesting thing to note is that these cars also go in style. Look at them closely for markings and customizations, for they will surely say a lot about the car too.

Filipinos probably know of the MINI Copper from the popular British television comedy series, Mr. Bean, starring Rowan Atkinson. Mr. Bean's car, a British Leyland Mini 1000, developed a character of sorts over the series and was central to several antics, such as Mr. Bean getting dressed in it, driving while sitting in an armchair strapped to the roof or attempting to avoid a parking garage toll by driving out through the entrance. :) Look at the MINIs that came. They sport Mr. Bean or Teddy, in their cars. It's so cute!

Smart launches the new Nokia Lumia 710

Smart launched yesterday the new Nokia Lumia 710! They threw an awesome welcome party at the REPUBLIQ, The Cafe and the Activity Center in front, which had a display of the new Nokia Lumia 710 Windows phone. They even flew in internationally acclaimed DJ Erick Morillo for the event! FUN! :)

The Nokia Lumia 710 packs Microsoft's Windows Phone 7.5 mobile operating system, or more commonly known as Mango. It features a distinctive and innovative Windows Live tiles touch screen interface, which flip to inform the user of a new message, or display the most recent information in real time (whether it may be a conversation, an image, or a social media alert).

The event started off with a press conference, hosted by KC Montero and Rhian Ramos, with the top executives from both Smart and Nokia in attendance. They spoke and explained the new partnership between Smart and Nokia, and the direction of the campaign. Ultimately, the SMART-Nokia partnership aims to provide SMART's subscribers more ways to "Live More" by putting the most "important things in their lives, front and center, in just one flip," with the new Nokia Lumia phone.

Smart Broadband Internet and Data Services head Lloyd Manaloto noted that "we are very excited to be the exclusive carrier of the Nokia Lumia 710 in the Philippines. We now have the widest range of smartphones running the best operating systems at prices that Filipinos will surely love."

"We like the fact that Smart is encouraging Filipinos to "Live More" and we believe they can with the Nokia Lumia 710. The purposely built, no-nonsense smartphone is designed for instant social and image sharing and the best browsing experience with IE9," said Dharmesh Goshalia, GM and Head of Sales of Nokia Philippines. "The Windows Phone experience on a Lumia device can be amazing for those willing to try it out," he added.

After the speeches, KC showed a clip where he tests the Nokia Lumia 710's performance and speed against people's smartphones. It's claim to fame is that it does what needs to be done much faster than other smartphones. An example of a challenge KC did was to take a photo of something, then upload it to Facebook, and see who does it first. After his challenges, he did prove that the Nokia Lumia 710 smoked all the others' smartphones. Wow!

In a special appearance, Manny V. Pangilinan, with lots of bodyguards, and SMART people surrounding him. He stayed for a bit, partied a little, then left. Hehe :)

After seeing what the Nokia Lumia can do, I can't help but ask if this year will be Nokia's comeback? I can still remember my first ever mobile phone, it was a Nokia 5110. I am sure most of you have similar stories with your first mobile phone. After Nokia launched the Lumia phones (610, 710, 800 and 900) it is really interesting to follow and watch how the market would respond. One thing's for sure, the Lumia will beat, or rather, smoke all your phones! 'Nuff said. :))

Thanks to Nokia Philippines Communications Manager Nikka Abes, who borrowed the Lumia family from her office-mates, we were able to get to see and hold the Nokia Lumia 610, 710, 800 and 900.

The Lumia 710 has an 8GB internal storage for music and multimedia files storage and downloadable mobile applications from the Microsoft's online store, the Windows Marketplace. It has a 5-megapixel camera with HD video capture, and full wireless connectivity via WiFI and 3G.

Boracay Tourist Information and Assistance Centre Launched in Station 2

The Department of Tourism and the Municipality of Malay inaugurated last Friday the Boracay Tourist Information and Assistance Centre (BTIC), located at the beach front of Station 2, formerly Boracay Boat Station 2, in Barangay Balabag, Boracay Island in Aklan, to better address the various information, safety, and security concerns of tourists.

The Boracay Tourist Information Centre was inaugurated at a very opportune time with the unfolding of the summer season, as a lot of domestic and foreign tourists have started flocking the popular party-island in the Philippines, making it really more FUN in the Philippines and in Boracay!

“Boracay is very much the face of Philippine tourism today: beauty and constant improvement in action. And that is the work we will continue to work on,” Tourism Secretary Jimenez said.

The Centre aims to deliver more accurate and up-to-date tourism-related information to visitors, as well as strengthen risk reduction and management systems for the safety and security of tourists.

Smart Communications volunteered to renovate the old boat station and transformed it into the Information Centre. City Watch Snaptech, an expert in rendering emergency and medical response services, has been tapped to conduct basic response seminars for volunteers in the island. Meanwhile, Lifeguard Rescue Team, will be on alert for technical rescues. As an adjunct to this effort, the Philippine National Police’s (PNP) Tourist Assistance Desks maned by Tourist Police will serve to complement the newly-launched BTIC.

DOT Undersecretary Maria Victoria Jasmin said, “We are installing tourist information and emergency medical response counters in all these destinations, and we are piloting it in Boracay considering it is one among those with high tourist traffic all year-round. This is a collaborative project of the Department, the local government of Malay and the private sector, represented by the Lifeguard Rescue Team, City Watch Snaptech, and Smart Communications.”

In inaugurating the Centre, Secretary Jimenez proudly exclaimed: “Boracay is a genuine Filipino brand. Ano po ang ibig sabihin niyan? Pumapasok po sa travel agency ang mga tao sa ibang bansa, hindi pa namumutawi sa kanilang bibig ang salitang Pilipinas, binabanggit na ang salitang ‘Boracay.’”

In closing, the Tourism Secretary encouraged Boracay stakeholders to continue being the inspiration for the rest of the country. “Continue to inspire your country. Be the Boracay we will always be proud of. And I guarantee you, you are not going to get competition from the rest of the Philippines. You are going to get recognition from your people as being the place where the Filipino brand called "Boracay" finally calls the Filipino brand to rise,” Secretary Jimenez beamed.

Boholano Cuisine at Amorita Resort's Saffron Restaurant

While I really absolutely had fun and enjoyed my Bohol Country-side Tour and my fantastic Garden Villa accommodation, care of Amorita Resort in Panglao Island Bohol, my main purpose that night was to try and taste the signature Boholano Cuisine prepared by Amorita's Saffron Restaurant.

If I am to summarize the food experience and the taste in a word, it would be gingery. Bohol’s cuisine is characterized by the use of a lot of ginger, lemongrass and a turmeric. So here's what Amorita's Saffron Restaurant made for me that evening. Let's start the food adventure!

For starters I was served Chicken Binakol, a delicious chicken soup dish with the use of coconut meat and water to make it a little bit sweet-salty. Also they served me Kinilaw na Gusto or Seaweeds.

For the main course, it was Chicken Halang Halang, which is made of slowly cooked chicken breast, Bohol style, in chili, lots of shredded coconut meat, lemongrass and ginger. Fish Sinanglay, steamed fish wrapped in pechay cooked in coconut milk or gata.

Another treat from the chef was Balbacua, which was made from oxtail and trotters, again with the usual Bohol flare, an undertone of tumeric and ginger. It was soft and a little crunchy, and its sauce, really tasty. Takla or Crayfish in Coconut Cream followed. These crayfish come from the mangrove forests of Bohol. It was like eating shrimp or lobsters but with that Bohol kick. Lastly, they made me try the Tortang Boholana, fried eggplant with ground meat, eggs, onions, bell peppers, and tomatoes.

For dessert, they served Turon de Bohol, which is caramelized banana in fried lumpia wrapper with ice cream and cherry on top.

Amorita’s Saffron Restaurant and Bar cooked up a feast for my senses, with a special Boholano Cuisine, which, admittedly, is something new to me. It was a whole set of different Boholano dishes that appeared before my eyes. After I devoured and tasted everything, I can say that I enjoyed dinner! Thank you :)

This place is a perfect break from the hustle and bustle of city life.

The resort exemplifies why it is really more fun in the Philippines, as they really receive you warmly (with the famous Filipino hospitality and service) within this world-class facility. Bohol: Rich in History, Culture and Island Adventure

The morning after, I was fetched by Gery, a DOT accredited tour operator, who services groups and brings them to the tourist spots around Bohol. Of course, my Bohol trip will never be complete without seeing the famous Chocolate Hills. The viewing deck is situated at Carmen, where the Chocolate Hills National Monument is located. There are approximately 1,776 hills, which are actually grass covered limestones, scattered in as much as 50 sq. kilometers covering several towns in Bohol.

Another must see are the tarsiers! The Tarsier Sanctuary, a more tarsier-friendly home for the primates, is located at the town of Corella. It currently houses 113 tarsiers as of today, and will soon spike up as the mating season ended last October/November, and the tarsiers will soon be ready to bare little tarsiers. These creatures measure up to 5-6 inches big, and can live up to 15-20 years in captivity.

Before, people were able to hold the tarsiers, but they noticed that when the tarsiers get stressed they tend to bang their heads and go suicidal, so the new Tarsier Sanctuary do not allow people to hold the tarsiers anymore. They teach the tourists the value of conservation and protection of the tarsiers, and providing for a sustainable eco-tourism adventure spot.

The Immaculate Conception Church in Baclayon, or more commonly known as the Baclayon Church is another must see. It is one of the oldest churches in the Philippines, believed to be built in 1595, when the Jesuits arrived in Bohol from Cebu. It was built from coral stones and cemented with egg white. The current building was completed in 1727. Adjoining the church is the old convent, where the priests lived. It now houses a small museum of centuries-old church artifacts, religious relics, and antiques from the 16th century. I was lucky to have heard the internationally famous Loboc Children’s Choir, practicing for a wedding that afternoon.

For a leisurely lunch, you must try the Loboc River Cruise, an hour ride down the Loboc River on a floating restaurant with a buffet Filipino lunch and an on-board live entertainment, which ends at the Busay Falls, which is just more than a meter high. As the boat takes off, the buffet and the singing begin. As you are eating you can enjoy the lush greens slowly sliding along your table, while being serenaded by either a band or a local singer.

From lunch, we headed back to my resort at Amorita in Panglao, but before that, we passed through 3 stops, one is the Blood Compact Monument in Tagbilaran City, where it commemorates the symbol of friendship sealed between the Spanish and Filipinos when Spanish explorer Miguel Lopez de Legazpi and Datu Sikatuna (the chieftain of Bohol), made the Sandugo or blood compact on March 16, 1565.

The next is pasalubong shopping at the only DOT accredited local delicacy shopping
center in Bohol. I bought a lot of Peanut Kisses to give to my family and friends. The peanut kisses is actually crisp and crunchy peanut and egg white cookies, a Bohol delicacy in honor of the Chocolate Hills.

Lastly, I asked to be brought to the Bohol Bee Farm, not to see the bees, but to take a look at the nice organic farming and organic products they have at the farm-resort. Their fresh food and organic offerings which you can take home to your family are really a treat! Do not forget to try their homemade ice cream and fresh spreads and honey. I personally liked the malunggay ice cream, which I now crave for.

Bohol: Traveling to Alona Beach in Panglao Island

Bohol, being one of the top local destinations of the Philippines, is becoming more and more known to both local and foreign travelers. One cannot help but marvel at a destination that has, what people say, "the complete tourism package" because there is something for everyone. Bohol has a provincial allure rich in history, heritage and culture, resorts of all class, best dive sites, great adventure, good food, and a lot more!

Bohol is valued to be a tropical, eco-tourism paradise - a must-see destination in Central Philippines, with the ancient limestone formations of the Chocolate Hills, the Tarsier Sanctuary, unparalleled underwater marine life, 16th century churches, and delicious native delicacies, being some of the reasons why people go to Bohol.

It was my first time in Bohol, and admittedly, I was thrilled and eager to see the tarsiers and the chocolate hills, two tourism-icons of Bohol, which I have known since I was a kid. So with the Department of Tourism “Your Guide To Bohol Philippines” guidebook as the only information I have, I have put my faith and fate to Department of Tourism (DOT) Region 7 Director Rowena Montecillo, who graciously arranged an itinerary tour for me, to see what Bohol has to offer to weekend travelers, like myself.

Upon arrival at the Tagbilaran Airport, I was fetched and shuttled to my resort at Panglao Island, some 30-40 minutes drive from Tagbilaran City. I didn’t have anything planned on my arrival, so I explored the stretch of Alona beach, one and a half kilometer of white sand, where my resort is located, dined by the shore, swam and snorkeled.

One cannot help but notice that there are a lot Europeans on the stretch of Alona Beach at 12 noon, having their tans and being sun-kissed (or burned by the heat of the sun). Although that kind of fun may not be for me, I had a perfect beach-bumming day, just sitting under the shade of the trees and relaxing, to cap off my first day in Panglao Island, Bohol.

El Nido Palawan's Islands, Beaches, Lagoons, and Fun Activities

El Nido in Palawan boasts of more than 45 islands, that's why it brings a lot of excitement, adventure and fun to travelers and visitors to the place. It has a lot of picturesque limestone cliffs and formations, beaches, lagoons, and islands to discover. We went and explored some of the islands, lagoons, beaches and caves, when we were there a few weeks ago.

After breakfast at Miniloc Island Resort, our group proceeded to our itinerary. First up was the Small Lagoon and Big Lagoon, where we kayaked and enjoyed the scenery and its majestic allure. The photo below is courtesy of El Nido Resorts.

After the lagoons, we proceeded to Vigan Island, or more commonly known as Snake Island, which got the name from its visitors because of the shape of its sandbar. Snake Island is near Pangulasian Island Resort of El Nido Resorts, which will open later this year. You can climb uphill Snake Island to see the S-shaped sandbar and to get a nice view of the surroundings. While following the trail up, we saw pitcher plants.

After visiting Snake Island, we trooped to our lunch stopover, one of the private beach clubs of El Nido Resorts - Entalula Island Beach Club (photo below courtesy of the resort). Entalula Beach Club offers small cabanas where guests can lie down, rest, beach bum, and enjoy the sun beside the sea.

Upon arriving at the island, a resort staff will greet you and give you a welcome shot of really delicious coolers, and cold towelette. I forgot what the drink's made of, but it was actually really refreshing.

Entalula Island Beach Club offers a stretch of white sand beach, nice clear blue waters, which is good for snorkeling, and water sports. It has a clubhouse, a beach volleyball court, badminton court and rock climbing facilities. You can either go beach bumming or indulge in all the activities the island has to offer.

This was the lunch prepared for four at the Entalula Beach clubhouse.

After lunch, we proceeded to explore Cudugnon Cave (photo courtesy of El Nido Resorts), then to the Cathedral, then back to Lagen Island Resort to cap off the day's adventure.

Miniloc Island Resort of El Nido Resorts Philippines

We stayed at Lagen Island for two nights. During the first night, we went on a sunset cruise, but the sun did not really show itself, so we were a bit disappointed with that. Although, having a cruise boat all to ourselves was quite of really awesome, which made up for the lack of a beautiful sunset :) We sailed back, had dinner, and slept soundly in our comfy beds.

The next day we were jam-packed with exciting and fun adventures, starting off with a breakfast at another El Nido Resorts property, Miniloc Island Resort, just 30 to 40 minutes boat ride away from Lagen Island. They say it is the introductory resort of El Nido because it costs cheaper but still gives the picturesque and jaw-dropping view and facilities for vacationers.

We were treated to the early morning feeding of the school of jacks which already frequent Miniloc Island. Jacks are large, swift fish that swim in schools. Jacks are carnivorous and typically prey on smaller fish. It was really spectacular seeing them rush to the fish as it hits the water. They even jump and eat it before landing in the sea.

After that, we did a short tour of Miniloc Island Resort, took some photos, then we were off to island hopping, beach-bumming, caving, and fun activities.

Like the other El Nido Resorts properties, it had around 50 (more or less) rooms. We were not able to see the interiors of the rooms anymore, but nonetheless, I would think it is of the same impeccable quality of the other resorts we saw and stayed in.

SLICE at Bonifacio High Street Central

Just before Senator Pia Cayetano's birthday and a week before their soft opening, she invited me to try out the food they will be serving over at her newest baby, a restaurant cafe called SLICE at the Bonifacio High Street Central. I was a willing guinea pig, so I went and gave my opinion on almost all the food on her menu I tried that night.

The menu for that night is a choice of an appetizer, soup, salad, sandwich, pasta and main course. So these are what I chose to try:

Bruschetta (Half Moon) - Slice chicken and beef ball with cheese over pesto puttanesca sauce. I am not sure if it is still called Half Moon Bruschetta until now but what you see in the picture isn't its look anymore. The topping is more defined, but with the same amount of cheese love.

Thick Tomato Soup - Puree of fresh tomatoes infused with cream. Now this is the bomb. This soup is healthy and to die for, because it really tastes wonderful. It's thick, just the way I like it, and the flavors just marry well and bursts in your mouth.

Cranberry and Chicken Salad - Greens tossed in cranberry dressing topped with grilled chicken, apples, cranberries, very light glazed walnuts and goat cheese. It's light, healthy, appetizing, and refreshing. You can never go wrong with salad. I'm biased with anything cranberry.

Another yummy treat I don't mind having over and over again is the Smoked Salmon Sandwich. It's made of a huge slice of smoked salmon, onions, greens, with hard boiled egg on cold Batard. Oh, and it came with a side salad.

For the main course, I chose the Pulled Beef Rice Melt. Slow cooked certified US Angus pulled beef on brown rice covered with cheeses. Really chewy and cheesy, and so yummy!!! :)

Besides those that I have written before like the muffins, cupcakes and cookies, SLICE has new desserts in store. Their brownies and apple pie really tastes good and makes you feel really good. You have to try them! :)

But besides the really yummy apple pie, and all their "to-die-for" desserts and goodies, they have really good coffee. In fact, they have a peanut-butter-chocolate flavored one that hits the spots, and drives home the punch.

One trivia about Senator Pia is that she only started to like drinking coffee during the recent 2010 campaigns. Her favorite is the cappuccino specifically. And with the story of SLICE's coffee selection, she just wants to make available a consistent good cup of coffee to her customers, however they might like their coffee made.

Another hit in SLICE is their Moringga juice. Moringga, if you don't know, is Malunggay. It packs a lot of nutrients and is healthy and good for our body. But apparently, people do not really like to eat Malunggay (true for me), but this drink is really good, you won't even taste Malunggay, it's like you are just drinking a fruit juice that's sweet and refreshing.

In her own words, Pia describes her restaurant cafe as: "Slice is where DESSERT comes first, BREAKFAST is served all day, HEALTHY ALTERNATIVES are always recommended, and where we ENJOY LIFE, one slooow BITE and SLICE at a time."

As you would recall, I already blogged about SLICE High Street a few months ago, when it was still a cart, and how I rave about her muffins (particularly the Sprinkle Me Cinnamon). Now the whole restaurant is already finish, and is on its soft opening. Head over and try it out soon! :)

Lagen Island Resort of El Nido Resorts Palawan

From Apulit Island of El Nido Resorts in Taytay, Palawan, we rode an outrigger boat across Taytay Bay to the town proper, rode 2 hours in a van to El Nido Town, then we finally transferred to a boat which brought us to another haven of tranquility, Lagen Island of El Nido Resorts (as well). It is located in El Nido, in the northwestern part of Palawan, a breath-taking location known for its high biodiversity, lush forested limestone cliffs, and lagoons.

Like Apulit Island, Lagen Island is accessible by a daily 75-minute direct flight on a 19-seater Dornier aircraft from the Island Transvoyager Inc. (ITI) to the El Nido Airport in El Nido, Palawan, then a 40-minute boat ride to the island paradise itself. But for us, we came from Taytay, thus the route stated above.

The travel for some may be quite a hassle because of the transfers, but certainly not for me. I think it is part of the whole experience. I have been to El Nido before (actually twice already), and I have seen its beauty and wonders. Also, I have seen its development (road repair and road constructions) as it is being poured in little by little. El Nido, Palawan, is the place to see and be.

Lagen Island of El Nido Resorts is an ideal destination if you are up for some comfort combined with classic and modern design which gives an air of elegance, style and awesomeness. Upon arrival, we were greeted by the Palawan March and Cuyonin Hymns, and to some welcome drinks and cashew nuts, and we were ushered to the Clubhouse for our late lunch.

Lagen Island Resort offers good food, signature massages, an infinity pool, private picnics, island hopping, guided eco-tours, sports and water adventures, beautiful islands, bird watching, caving, sunset cruise, and a lot more! The resort is great for those seeking the sun, and for those who want to indulge in relaxing themselves in a private and serene island, which has everything you need (except probably for TV and WiFi in the room). After lunch, we were brought to our rooms. I had the Beach Front cottage, which had an awesome view of the whole cove.

Certainly, there are more things to do in El Nido, as it has 45 islands, islets, which presents countless opportunities for discovering nature and relaxation. I’ll write about some of the islands you can go discover and what you can do in them in a separate post. But comparing Apulit Island and Lagen Island, each of the two has their unique characteristics which will certainly make you fall in love with both. They’re both beautiful and awesome in their own right.

El Nido is a municipality situated at the northwestern tip of the Province of Palawan, which is located 430km southwest of Manila and 238km northwest of the Palawan capital of Puerto Princesa City. It is characterized by scenic landscapes, crystal blue waters, limestone cliffs, and relative isolation, which attract a lot of travelers and tourists.

Apulit Island Resort of El Nido Resorts

Apulit Island Resort, formerly known as Club Noah Isabelle, is the newest property of El Nido Resorts group of eco-island resorts in Taytay, northeastern part of Palawan, an unspoiled location that shows a wealth of wildlife and scenic landscapes. It is nestled within a pristine cove and a backdrop of limestone cliffs.

To go to Apulit Island, it only takes a 75-minute direct flight from Manila via the Island Transvoyager Inc. (ITI) 19-seater Dornier aircraft, which flies daily to Cesar Lim Rodriguez (CLR) Airport in Taytay, Palawan. After reaching the airport you have to take a boat ride from Tamisan Jetty, 10 minute or less ride away from the airport, to Apulit, which takes around an hour or less. Once you arrive at the resort, there will be a welcoming committee who will greet you with a familiar tune, if you’ve been to the other El Nido Resorts properties, the Palawan march and a Cuyonin medley, a lei and refreshments.

Apulit Island houses 50 water cottages and deluxe water cottages in total. After breakfast, we were ushered to our water cottage, where our bags were already trolleyed in. The cottages’ look very ethnic. When you enter, you really can see and feel the Filipino touches to the room/cottage. The water cottages give you a breathtaking view of the horizon, the sea, and the reef underneath (watch out for sharks!!!). It is truly a relaxing and comfortable place to stay in.

There are several activities you can do at Apulit Island, and we have tried some of them when we went there for a night. The first activity we did was the Caving, or the Cave Explorations, as they say. We saw and visited quite a number of caves. To name them, they are:

1. Bat Cave; 2. Secret Cave; and 3. St. Joseph’s Cave

4. Lobster Cave; and 5. North Cave

After the cave explorations, we did snorkeling by their house reef. A guide joined us, as he pointed out the different species of fish and sea creatures we encountered. We saw a green sea turtle, giant clams, a lot of different species of fish, and, for the first time, we were able to experience something unbelievable - a school of fish, probably hundreds of thousands of them, just appeared and engulfed us. It was scary at first because everywhere you look you could see them, and they might “run into you,” but it was a spectacular sight. REALLY.

Other activities you can enjoy are: island hopping, fish feeding, scuba diving, picnics by the beach, massage, beach volleyball, kayaking, billiards, and other board games.

When you book at Apulit Island it already includes the roundtrip boat transfers on the regular airport shuttle, full-board meals with brewed coffee and tea at the Clubhouse Restaurant, fruit juices during breakfast, use of snorkeling equipment, use of available non-motorized water sports equipment (kayak, windsurf, hobie cat, etc.), standard resort guided activities such as snorkeling at the house reef, kayaking, island-hoping, etc.

Conservation Fee: All visitors to El Nido and Taytay, 12 years old and above, are required to pay a Conservation Fee of Php 200 per person per visit. Fees collected will be used for the management, maintenance, and administration of the El Nido - Taytay Protected Area. El Nido Resorts is deputized to collect the said amount, which you may be settle at the front desk of any of their resorts.

Travelling to Paradise in the Philippines this Summer

I also got the Hobart's Spicy Tomato Soup, which is homemade tomato jam and fresh basil. I didn't taste a hint of spiciness, but the soup is rich and really good too. I guess you just have to say to make it spicy.

For the main course, I got the Slow-Roasted Beef Belly. Succulent beef belly with honey roasted baby carrots, brown rice, and horseradish cream.

After the a la carte dinner. We went on to the most important part of the tasting... DESSERT! Diamond Hotel has always been known for its delightful lineup of pastries and desserts, and this year, besides the cakes, the hotel's signature array of sweets is made more exceptional with the addition of homemade ice cream specially concocted by Executive Pastry Chef Daniel Back.

ART x FASHION x LIFESTYLE x MUSIC x PASSION x CREATIVITY x DESIGN = Platform Show Manila 2012. It is Manila's first Youth Culture Convention where more than 80 of the country's kick-ass independent verge culture retail industry players converged and conquered at The Playground, Ronac Art Center in San Juan, Manila.

It was so perfect and inspiring seeing young entrepreneurs and artists, who love what they're doing, committed to develop their crafts (clothing lines, art and culture products, independent accessories and lifestyle items). They all came together with "an opportunity to not only sell to the public, but proudly display the fruits of their hard work."

The Platform Show Manila showcased Filipino talent, creativity and entrepreneurial skills, which, for me, makes it really MORE FUN in the Philippines! The youth has the stage. It is set. All we have to do is take it, create, perform. The Philippines can also be a hub for finding exclusive clothes and creations, and we can also be a symbol of what the next generation can aspire to be.

The event also featured Postura Project (a project which aims to encourage Filipinos to wear something Filipino-made everyday), and their photo-walls. Glad they survived 30 days. As it culminated, it started something new, hopefully inspiring a lot more others to do the same.

The night before, I pitched the idea of bringing "It's More Fun in the Philippines" placards to accompany all the photo-taking-opportunities. Too bad I wasn't able to prepare stickers to give out. Around 3,000 people dropped by. Imagine that! But anyway, I woke up early, prepared (print and laminate) some signs, and went to Ronac at 12nn to around 6pm to catch the people.

Have you experienced or heard of billing nightmares, exorbitant and out of this world fees, from mobile surfing? Honestly, the first thought that comes to mind regarding this topic is the case of blogger Noemi Dado and her experience of her iPhone billing. After reading the blog post, and hearing same stories from friends, I never imagined bills can reach as crazy as 20,000 pesos!? Now that's shocking!

WHAAAAAAAAAAT?!?! O_O Even the tarsier was shocked with that kind of a bill...
For travel bloggers, like myself, who are always on the go, going from one destination to the other, mobile surfing (to be able to post photos, check and update Facebook, Twitter, and reply to E-mails) is an important function we utilize the most. This is why it is important that we make sure our data plans suit our needs. It is also important that, at the back of our heads, we know we can post and update our readers and followers of the latest and fun places we go to and discover, without the hassle of worrying about data charges.

Good thing SMART Communications has this thing called the SMART Anti-Bill Shock on iPhone, Data Lite and Broadband plans. It is a shock proof feature built-in to the plan which basically puts a cap to the amount you will be asked to pay if you use data. It's already incorporated, unlike in other providers who require their subscribers to register before they can avail of the unlimited offers.

Never pay more than P1200 on top of your monthly plan. Once you have exceeded your plan’s free data allocation, you will be charged P10/30 minutes. Charges are continuous until the amount of P1200 (cap) has been reached -- it's like placing a cap when your data charges reach that amount. You can still continue to surf on your phone but you will only need to pay a maximum of P1,200 for data charges for that month. Of course, you will still have to pay for your regular monthly phone bill and other carrier expenses incurred (Calls, SMS, Roaming, MMS, etc.).

On the other hand, for Smart Bro (broadband) SIM Plan 495 subscribers, there’s the anti bill shock cap of P999 on your allowable 50 hours of data use per month. Anything in excess of that 50 hours will be charged P10/30 minutes. Once the subscriber consumes P999 or approximately 80 hours, he will enjoy unlimited internet with only a max bill of P999. How cool is that?

Definitely, It's More Fun to travel the Philippines knowing that SMART has this shockproof feature which makes blogging while traveling a whole lot easier and fun. :)

When in Cebu, you have got to pass by Marco Polo Plaza Cebu's Cafe Marco to try out and take home some of their really delicious and indulgent chocolate chip cookies called the "Malicious Cookies." It's starting to become famous, most probably because of raves from a lot of people who have tasted this treat! :)

For 44 pesos (for two pieces), this is a must try, and surely it is one good contender for the best chocolate chip cookies in town. :) I crave!

MINI Cooper Car Club Philippines Fun Run

It was indeed a FUN weekend being 38 MINI Coopers trooping to Tanay, Rizal for the first ever Sierra Madre Fun Run of the MINI Car Club Philippines (MCCP), an exclusive and only MINI Cooper Car Club in the Philippines. I was lucky to be part of the experience, and to be able to join them that day. :)

We all assembled at Shell Libis (Northbound) at around 5:00 AM, with MINI Coopers arriving almost every minute or so. It was a nice sight, all those MINIs gathered in one location. We drove straight to Sierra Madre at Tanay, Rizal for more or less 40 minutes, with speeds unimaginable at full load in a MINI Countryman S (Turbo).

Have you seen The Italian Job (IMDB, 2003)? It's just like that, only much much better because we had more MINIs than in the film! :)) But seriously, it was an awesome killer (in a good way) ride. Didn't imagine that with such a compact car, it is packed with so much muscles and power! Not to mention, a 6-foot guy like me can fit and sit comfortably inside a MINI, now I am SOLD!

The MINI Car Club Philippines meets regularly, and does fun runs quarterly. Asked why they do this, MINI Car Club Philippines' president, Ken Uy said, "The cars are like humans. If we humans need to exercise, the cars need to exercise as well, using them and running them at fast speeds. The purpose of the cars are to be used, and not just to be kept at home."

We all had breakfast at Sierra Madre. I decided to try out the Tapang Usa or charbroiled smoked/dried deer meat. I think it was the high from the kick-ass ride up Sierra Madre that made me adventurous and want to try the deer meat. The texture was just like the regular tapa, but this one tastes bolder and more tangy. After breakfast, we all went back down, with smiles on everyone's faces. It was an awesome experience!

R.O.X. sponsored an HD video camera called the Drift Innovation during the MINI Cooper fun run, and is giving away a brand new unit for the best photo of the event.
