See the Stars play this weekend!

Hey Bridgewater  Apartments! If you’re going to be in town this Labor Day Weekend, why not catch up on America’s Favorite Pastime by watching the Huntsville Stars take on the Mobile BayBears?

The Stars will take on Mobile September 3rd- 6th with a double header on Saturday, September 4th. This is due to a rainout in Mobile over the weekend that caused the cancellation of a game. ONE ticket will get you into BOTH games! There are also special promotions happening on Sunday and Monday.

Sunday is Family Funday/Super Soaker Sunday. All youth sports teams, scout troops/packs, etc., (and their coach) IN UNIFORM will receive free admission to Sunday home games, courtesy of SportsMed. Also, make sure you’re packing your water pistols, squirt guns and Super Soakers on Sundays and you can get wet as part of FOX 54’s Super Soaker Sunday. ALL metal bleacher seats are wet zones. A water refill station will be provided on the concourse. That should be fun!

Monday is Labor Day & Military Monday. It’s the last game of the regular season and Labor Day. All military & government ID Card holders will receive $1 admission when presenting their ID Card at the Box Office. You also have a chance to participate in the Okra Win-Free Marathon. Run a lap around the field and enjoy a nice steak dinner and some okra! I don’t particularly like Okra, but I sure could go for some steak!

So be sure to get your tickets now, and spend some time in Joe Davis Stadium this weekend!

Are you one of the millions of people out there that love a good scare every now and then? If so, you may enjoy one of the Huntsville Ghost Tours, and if you’re interested, there’s one coming up this Saturday, September 4th at 6 pm. The walk starts at Harrison Brothers Hardware and is 2 hours long. Who said you have to wait for Halloween for a good scare?

The Ghost Walks through the Old Town Historic District, Twickenham Historic District, and The Big Spring occur every Saturday until October at 6 pm. All of them are equally scary; no one is better than the other.

Have you ever asked yourself these kinds of questions: was that children singing on Walker St.? Who’s the angry ghost in the courthouse? Or, who are the Civil War soliders floating around? If so, you’ll have all of these questions and more answered when you join the ghost tour. You’ll also have the wits scared out of you, but that’s why you signed up right? No one goes to a ghost tour primarily for a history lesson.

Tickets are $8 for adults and $6 for children. You can buy tickets in advance at Harrison Brothers Hardware or the night of the tour.

2010 NE Alabama State Fair

Hey Huntsville residents! The 2010 Northeast Alabama State Fair is only a week away (Sept. 2-6)! Get excited! Most state fairs are huge, and have something for everyone.

There’s lots of new events and attractions for this year’s Fair including the ALL NEW John Hunt

BBQ Festival, sponsored by the Huntsville Jaycees and Southern Crossroads. Since BBQ is a staple of the summer, it only makes sense for there to be some sort of competition at such a large summer event. This is a Shadetree BBQ competition with cash prizes awarded to the teams with the best ribs and best chicken. Do you think your BBQ is the best around? Then why don’t you enter the contest?

Another new attraction for the fair is the Star Family Circus and Thrill show. This high action show features “death defying” motorcycle acts along with several circus acts that your family is sure to enjoy, as well as keep you on the edge of your seats!

There’s karaoke, a watermelon seed spitting contest, petting zoo, different food contests and more! There are so many events going on at the fair that it’s impossible for me to name them all!

This all takes place at John Hunt Park on Jaycee Way, at different times daily. Click the hyper link above to see times and dates.

Miranda Lambert

Hey all you music lovers out there! Are you a Miranda Lambert or Blake Shelton fan? If so, you’ll be happy to know that they both will be in concert along with guest star Colt Ford at the Redstone Arsenal Activity Field on September 3rd at 7 pm.

Miranda Lambert is an American country music artist who gained fame as a finalist on the 2003 season of Nashville Star, where she finished in third place and later signed to Epic Records, and later Columbia. With hits like “Me and Charlie Talking” and “Kerosene”, Lambert is the third female country singer in history to have three records debut at #1 on Billboard Country Albums.

Blake Shelton

Blake Shelton is a country artist as well. With hits such as “Austin”, “The Baby”, “Some Beach”, and “Home”, he has made a name for himself on the Billboard charts. Colt Ford is an American country music artist and former professional golfer. He has released two albums via his own Average Joe’s label, and has charted three singles on the Hot Country Songs charts. Ford has also written a theme song for Professional Bull Riders, and has worked with John Michael Montgomery, Montgomery Gentry, and Cledus T. Judd, among others.

This is sure to be a great concert for fans! Tickets are $30 in advance, and $35 at the door. You can get them online at ticketmaster.com. Luckily, Redstone Arsenal Activity Field is only 10  minutes away from Bridgewater Apartments, so your commute won’t be that bad.

When it come to investing in renter’s insurance, it doesn’t take long to find the right quote for you. What does take a good minute is trying to replace what you may have lost due to a natural disaster, petty theft, or whatever else may come your way.

Dress to Impress at the Career Fair

Are you one of the great number of people who are looking for a job in this struggling economic market? If so, you may be interested in attending the MEGA Job Fair in Huntsville at the Von Braun Center on Monday, August 23rd from 10 am to 4:30 pm.

This job fair will be focusing on engineering, science and technology, healthcare, and professional jobs. There will be at least 40 vendors attending, taking resumes and meeting possible candidates.  The Huntsville Times website has links to the various companies that will be attending. It’s always a good idea to research which companies you want to give your resume, because you will be seen as well prepared and serious about your position if you have knowledge of the company.

Going to a job fair can be a very stressful experience, so I’ve found a few tips from about.com that may help you organize your thoughts a little better:

• Make sure to research the companies before you approach them.
• Be sure to bring at least 25 crisp copies of your resume to the career fair.
• Before the fair, be prepared to interview on the spot.
• Arrive to the career fair a little early to register if need be and to plan your ‘attack’. Look at the maps that you are provided with and route your path to the employers that you’ve targeted so you won’t be looking around like a lost puppy.
• After speaking with the employer, show your interest by asking them what the next steps are. Ask if it’s okay to call them or send follow-up letters a few days after the job fair ends. But if they say they’ll contact you, don’t press your luck too much.
• Collect business cards or contact info as you go, and do follow up within 24-48 hours with a thank-you letter to each of the representatives with whom you spoke
• Afterwards, revisit the job fair producers’ sites periodically. Many continue to list new and unfilled openings for some time after job fairs.

If you keep these tips in mind when planning for your next career fair, you’ll be fine. Granted, a job may not be guaranteed, but you’ll impress them, nonetheless.

Hey Bridgewater! Are you interested in networking with young professionals like yourself? If so, you should join Huntsville Alive! They always have fantastic events open to members and the general public in fun locations so that you can socialize, meet new people, make new friends, and broaden your contact network. Their next event is this Saturday at Downtown Forty Seven.

This event is sponsored by Olde Town Brewing Company and Allied Waste. The parties going on will basically turn 214 Holmes Avenue into a block party featuring live music, Olde Town Beer, and plenty of other drink specials.

As most events with Huntsville Alive! are, this event is also for those 21 and up. The ‘block party’ can also be seen as a ‘going green’ event. It’s a re-use, reduce, recycle event that will provide attendees with a souvenir cup to help keep downtown Huntsville green. Music from Assembly of Individuals will open the event, and Chattanooga’s own The Distribution will perform as well.

Cover is only $5, so you won’t have to break your wallet to attend. Again, the event is this Saturday, August 14th from 5 to 9 pm. See you there!

Decatur, AL from the Tennessee River

Hey Bridgewater! Do you have a taste for some great outdoor music? If so, you should head down to Rhodes Ferry Park (roughly 30 minutes away from Bridgewater Apts) TONIGHT to catch Ken Orr and The Orr Sisters at 6 pm. This can be the perfect after work activity; listening to great music with friends, chilling with a picnic basket, and relaxing by the Tennessee River.

The Concerts by the River Series has four concerts left for you to enjoy. The next concert is lined up for August 16. As stated above, tonight’s concert is featuring Ken Orr and The Orr Sisters. This family of talented singers are well known throughout the North Alabama Gospel circuit. The Orr Sisters sing at churches, festivals, music convetions, and a host of other gatherings. Ken Orr is the founder of KOOS Records, and is an established name in the music industry. These great vocals are sure to life you to a higher place.

Be sure to bring your picnic baskets, blankets, lawn chairs, and whatever else you need to make this even more of an enjoyable experience. Alabama knows that it rocks in the summer time!

Back to School

Well, Bridgewater, it’s that time again: back to school. Students, teachers, and administrators alike all heave  a heavy sigh as they return to the life that is dictated by school bells and haunted by school cafeterias. (My school cafeteria food still haunts me to this day…) In a sense, it’s the last weekend of freedom for those who are school bound! So what do you do?

Of course, you should definitely live it up! Fellas, make it a night out with your boys and take the town by storm! Ladies, Cantina Laredo (Bridge Street) has something just for you! Tonight, August 6th, Cantina Laredo is hosting a ladies night/teachers back to school celebration, hosted by Ambiance and First Fridays Huntsville. And yes, it’s grown folks certified.

From 10:30 – 11:30 pm, you’re mixing and mingling with your peers in a relaxed environment. Sip on your favorite drink and jam out to the tunes that the DJ will be spinning. At 11:30 until the doors close, the real party begins!

Does the prospect of shrimp excite anyone else as much as it excites me? If so, you’ll be happy to know that Shrimp Blast 2010 is taking place this weekend, Saturday, August 7th from 11 am to 11 pm.

The event will feature a variety of music, and a whole heap of seafood! Lots of shrimp and other fab foods will be available throughout the afternoon and evening. Grammy award winner Delbert McClinton will headline the event, and there will be over a dozen other acts featured throughout the day.

Food featured at the event will be low country boils, boiled shrimp, roasted corn, and more! Plates will be sold by the plate or in family sized portions. There will also be a wide selection of beverages that should go great with your meal.

Along with having a great time, you’re also supporting a call. $2 of every ticket sold will benefit the Alabama Governor’s Emergency Relief Fund in Response to the Oil Spill.

All of the fun is taking place at the Von Braun Center. Tickets are $10 general, $25 VIP, and you can get these tickets online at ticketmaster, from the Shrimp Blast website, or at the VBC box office.
