The car has been roughly assembled in order to make a better list of the missing bits and also to make it easier to move. It was originally red, and some original paint is intact, and it had a blue interior. The original chassis ID plate was with the car when purchased by the previous owner in the ’70s, but then was somehow lost. The current seller received a chassis ID plate from the Allard club stamped with the correct number and it is attached by the correct rivets in the original location. The car is California titled in the seller’s name.

The seat springs, risers, tracks and floor boards are there, along with the three pedal assemblies. the dash and gauges are in nice shape, the windshield frame is complete, the top header that attaches to the windshield frame is there, as is the rear spreader bar for the top, but the top mechanism is missing. the side curtains, correct bumpers and guards, both gas tanks and filler necks are there along with several boxes of misc. bits and jars of special screws, nuts and bolts.

The motor was a Ford Zephyr 6 cylinder and the transmission and rear axle were also English Ford. A car 4 serial numbers earlier had a Red Ram Hemi installed at the factory which would be an interesting power option for this car. The wire wheels, as shown, would also be a good upgrade. The seller says there is some pitting in some of the lower tube chassis members, notably along the bottom rail under the passenger seat. The left front corner of the body has had a slight repair and the left rear corner of the body was crudely straightened. At some point the firewall looks like it was trimmed to fit some other engine.

The body of these 356B race cars were lightened by about 200 pounds at the factory for competition, and included aluminum doors, hood, and deck lid, as well as Plexiglas rear and side windows. This one comes in the factory-delivered Heron Grey, which looks perfect with the black and white vinyl number roundels. Looking at this car should make all 346 owners throw away their hubcaps for good.

The interior looks fresh and relatively tame from the lightweight seats forward, while the rest of the cabin reveals the rollbar and window straps in place of door hardware to remind you of the purpose in the details. Oil pressure and temp gauges in the dash were added later, as well as through-the-hood fuel filling.

The Super 90 engine was installed as a correct replacement engine (KD #803124), and appears to be extremely clean. The upgrade in power, with the improved cooling and higher compression, made the performance gains substantial, and made these already lightweight coupes very competitive. The sellers indicate the car has been driven around Laguna Seca, and we can imagine the auditory bliss.

With the verifiable racing history with this example, we’re interested to see how much action this one might see, both at auction and on the track afterwards. Even with the rarity of these cars, this one deserves to have warm tires for as long as possible.

This 1969 MGC GT (Chassis G-CD1-U/5827-G) is a matching-numbers car according to the included BMIHT certificate that was completely restored by a previous owner. The seller says that it has excellent panel/door fit, excellent paint, and runs great with the desirable factory overdrive manual transmission. It has a fresh black leather interior and looks very good under the hood with claimed no rust despite lofe-long Northeastern ownership. It is now available in Nyack, New York for $23,000.

The brakes on the car were all rebuilt, including the expensive dual boosters, and the system is in excellent shape. The car came equipped with factory chrome wires which at some point were replaced with newer Dayton chrome wires, and they wear new Vredestein tires. Recent rear springs and shocks have the car riding a little high in the rear, which should settle over time into the nice low-slung stance that looks great on these GTs. When restored, the car was changed from factory BRG to red, though the seller says it was so thorough you would never know it.

The black interior has new cushions and recent leather covers, along with the correct original steering wheel. Inertia reel seat belts were added, and correct carpets and trim give the interior the right look. The seller does mention that the speedo reads a bit high and needs calibration. The windscreen also has two scratches, which are possibly fixable, but the seller wanted buyers to know they are there.

The seller says that the engine runs strong with excellent oil pressure and clutch. The exhaust is new and the overdrive works well. There are $20k worth or restoration and service receipts dating to the mid-90s, including all the work on the drivetrain.

The original tool kit, owner’s manual, jack and spare tire are included, and the seller says the car is restored to original specifications apart from the color change and slightly different wire wheels. This is another example of a clean car that you could not restore for this asking price.

This car is one of 960 LHD units E12 M535i produced, and 1410 in total. This is one of the last built, and the seller says there are likely less than a dozen in North America. The E28 M535i that followed got a bulky body kit and side skirts, so this car actually looks much better with its sleek bumpers and front air dam. More information about the M535i than we thought possible is available here on the M Registry. The car is wearing 16″ Alpina wheels, and the original 14″ BBS/Mahle wheels are included as well. Full Alpina suspension was sourced for the car, including specially valved Bilstein shocks, Alpina springs and Alpina rear anti-roll bar. The original M535i-specific suspension parts are included as well.

This car had a repaint in the original Polaris Silver approximately 10 years ago and still presents very well according to the seller. He has recently had rust addressed on front right jack point, spare tire well, and trunk opening, and shows many photos of the underside in the album below.

The interior is very nice, with a crack-free dash, original Recaro seats in black corduroy fabric , and excellent original carpet. This model has a cool sport steering wheel from the M1. The driver’s seat bolster is showing wear but included in the sale is enough OEM replacement fabric to re-cover both front seats. A period Denon casette stereo works well and has a CD changer under the seat along with a pair of amps. The seller says he has only used it with an ipod transmitter himself. Aftermarket cruise control was also installed.

The engine includes a genuine Alpina B9 ‘big valved’ head with a Schrick 290 degree camshaft installed. Also very interesting is the Alpina B7 turbo intake manifold and the factory Getrag dog-leg close-ratio gearbox. Recent work includes a new OEM fuel tank, new water pump, new belts, and a valve adjustment. Compression and leakdown tests from the PPI conducted in 2010 when the seller bought the car were:

#1 – 190 – 3% leakdown
#2 – 180 – 5% leakdown
#3 – 190 – 5% leakdown
#4- 180 – 12% leakdown
#5 – 185 – 4% leakdown
#6 – 190 – 2% leakdown.

The seller says he has no reason to think those numbers would have degraded.

The car is being sold because the owner’s list of ‘cars to own before he dies’ is long and he’s not getting any younger. We appreciate that he has kept the car in good condition while getting it out on some events for many others to enjoy.

The body is said to be in very good condition, and we particularly like the bumperless look on early MGAs with non-chrome wire wheels. The seller says the goal was daily driving, but the modifications point more toward a rough and ready event car. The bare aluminum boot and bonnet lids are in interesting contrast, and inform those who might have thought they were steel. The external spare mount and leather cover is a bit odd given that there is room for it in the trunk. It does harken back to endurance rally event cars that carried multiple spares, but we’d have to see whether it would grow on us in person.

The blue interior looks like it is in very good condition. The seats are from an 1956 Healey 100/4, and some of the switchgear is said to be custom. The Nardi wheel wears a good period center button instead of the small and too modern MG button sometimes seen.  The wood is in good shape and we like the radio delete plate.  Overall, the look is clean, simple, and an inviting place to spend some seat time.

The engine is from a MGB which is said to have been built to rally specs. The transmission is also from a B, and the car also received useful updates such as an electric fan and automatic thermostat system. The electrical system is also said to be all new, and it now uses an alternator. Other details include a new steel gas tank, rebuilt heater, and even a remote door locking system. Drum brakes have been retained all around, though a brake booster from a Jag Mk.I has been added to improve performance.

This is an unusually driver-oriented build to find on an MGA coupe, and we like what we see. Just as it is shown it seems like a perfect California Melee or or Motherlode event car. We wonder if any of our friends have ever seen it on the SoCal TT, given its location. Where would you drive it?

This 1978 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 (Chassis FJ40276697) was purchased by the seller in SoCal in 2009, and he has personally transformed the truck inside his 1-car home garage into the excellent looking example shown here. Starting with dragging the truck home on a U-Haul trailer, he has documented every major milestone in the build here on the IH8Mud.com forum. We love how he has brought it back to tasteful, near-stock condition, and has paid attention to the details of how the dash and minor components are assembled. He calls himself OCD, and we’d say that is a good thing given how nice this truck turned out. It is now available in Las Vegas, Nevada for $22,500.

The seller says: “I searched long a hard for the rig about 4 1/2 years ago and found it in the hills of Poway, California. It had been running around the large property for many years after coming form up north. The owner said that he wanted it to have a bright future and I was looking at restoring one for a while. I am a software engineer for my own company, that is very OCD and detail oriented. I used to build custom motorcycles and had lots of fun cruising around the US. With that being said I can’t stand a car looking pretty and never doing anything. So I decided not to do a frame off for the additional time it would take. After all, I wanted to run this on the trail as well as on the road.”

The seller brought the truck back to Las Vegas where it spent 7 months getting hand sanded as opposed to blasting and then painted. He says it was in splendid shape with one dime size rust are that was replaced. Over the months he was able to rebuild or restore original parts. All colors were matched to many samples of the original paint from this truck and other rigs. He wanted this to maintain the 1978 style and resemble the way it would have driven during that time, so he kept the original motor and started replacing most of the parts.

All body and paint was done by California Auto Body in Las Vegas. They believe in old school practices that take longer and it was worth it. All paint is Sherwin Williams CC/BC Toyota OEM match.

The seat covers were built following original templates, and the seller says you can’t tell the difference to OEM vinyl. The rear mat is very thick rubber, and the front mats are regular aftermarket. (he has yet to find the one of my unicorn pieces of the OEM front mat). Brand new custom beveled glass was installed in the front doors, with new door hardware in and out as shown in the forum pages. The dash is spot-on OEM including the vintage style radio. There are 150k miles on odometer, and after investigating records, the seller believes this to be accurate. The Yokohama Geolander 30 x 9.5 x 15 tires have about 15k on them.

The following is a list of what has been replaced (new as noted otherwise replaced during build):

-front radiator/rebuild kit
-extra “door off” side view mirrors
-many extra parts, nuts and bolts

The seller has all the paperwork and every receipt along with clear title.

The seller says: “I am selling it because my business is growing and I need to make big changes in my life including letting this guy go. There are still things to do to it like wiper motor, visors, dash pad that would be great fun for the new owner to complete while enjoying it. Its not perfect but it is truly what it was meant to be and I hope it goes to someone who loves it as much as I do.”

Related to the E9 coupes of racing and Art Car fame but way cheaper nowadays, the Bavaria sedan was a US-only variant of the E3 sedan, offering a relatively-stripped content package with a bigger engine. By this ’72 model, a three-liter version of the venerable M30 powerplant was the norm. The look isn’t as sexy as the coupe, but these sedans are well sized and their owners

Otherwise, the car looks factory fresh in black vinyl. Even a factory Blaupunkt stereo is there and functional–Nuke Laloosh would approve. The seller has added a couple of auxiliary gauges below the dash to monitor water temp, as the factory gauge has failed.

Unfortunately, the seller hasn’t seen fit to offer photos under the hood or of the undercarriage. Based on the cleanliness of the rest of the car, we’d be surprised to see significant problems. The M30 six should be pushing around 180hp through the twin sidedraft carbs.

This car is a study in quiet elegance. There is virtually nothing on the car that looks out of place from when new–the new should feel confident that they are buying a usable classic hotrod.
