Be introduces new technology to double the speed of its 24Mb high-speed broadband

Be Broadband has successfully completed their first trials to double the speed of their up to 24Mb broadband to almost 50Mb.

Be Broadband already offers broadband up to 24Mb but has been testing new technology in London that can 'bond' two high-speed connections together - doubling customers' current speed.

The initial trial ran across the central London Paddington exchange. In member feedback, Be's customers have reported real-world download speeds of between 30Mb and 45Mb. This is the equivalent of 3MB to 4.5MB each second - the size of an average MP3 file. Wider trials of the service are planned through 2009.

Felix Geyr, Managing Director of Be Broadband, said "We want to push the limits of high-speed broadband. We already offer the fastest possible broadband on an ADSL line, but we want to take it a step further. If you want broadband around the 50Mb mark but don't want to go the cable route, Be wants to offer you a real alternative."

Earlier this week Virgin announced that it will be rolling out faster broadband services through to summer 2009. However, these services will only be available in cable areas. Non-cable customers would be required to have their current phone line converted to use the service. Be Broadband's trials will allow customers to get equivalent speeds through standard BT phone lines.

Tiscali, the broadband, telephone and media company, announced on Monday a new package of wholesale telecoms services for businesses, meaning broadband for UK companies has just become faster, more innovative and less expensive.

The ADSL-based broadband service, known as Annex M, will enable telecoms resellers to provide their customers with greater service options and a host of attractive features, including higher guaranteed bandwidth for businesses, a doubling of Voice over IP (VoIP) connections per company and the opportunity to run multiple services such as voice, video and other media over a single circuit.

Running over Tiscali’s technologically advanced Next Generation Network, Annex M works by doubling the level of ‘upstream broadband’ with a corresponding decrease in the less important downstream speeds. This means that data transmission rates can be as high as 16Mb downstream and up to 2.5Mb upstream under near perfect conditions. These speeds vary, depending on the equipment being used by the customer and their proximity to the local exchange.

Lance Spencer, Product and Marketing Director for Tiscali Business Broadband Services, says: “This service is ideal for businesses looking to switch from BT or upgrade their telecoms capabilities whilst saving significantly on costs. It is a perfect replacement for BT’s SDSL services at a fraction of the cost with far more bells and whistles. Unlike BT’s SDSL service, which is based on BT’s legacy networks, our new offering will easily scale for further enhancement as it is delivered across Tiscali’s future-proof 21st Century network.”

As part of the Annex M package, the most ‘expensive’ and feature rich Tiscali SDSL (M) 2Mb product is actually less than half the monthly price of the BT SDSL nearest equivalent product. This includes rapid delivery of the service, enhanced care as standard and guaranteed bandwidth, which businesses increasingly demand.

“This radical new price point is more aligned with traditional ADSL based services rather than the exorbitant and inflexible legacy BT SDSL services and leased lines,” says Spencer. “It means that companies can really break away from the shackles of BT and actually get a much better experience and deal in the process.”

All Annex M services are delivered across Tiscali’s own Local Loop Unbundled (LLU) infrastructure which has tried and tested, sophisticated network engineering and prioritisation capabilities, to ensure that business traffic is prioritised at times of high network load. Annex M is available on Tiscali’s Local Loop Unbundled network infrastructure. 900 exchanges are already unbundled with another 100 being rolled out by the end of 2008, giving a business footprint of over 55% of business broadband users.

Tiscali launch online account management tool

Customers with Tiscali's Line Rental service can now make requests to modify their line features online using My Account.

For example activate or de-activate 1571 voicemail or caller display. Previously customers would have had to make a call to Tiscali to do this, the new tool will provide a faster more efficient service to our customers whilst improving the customer experience.

How do I logon to the new online tool?

1. Go to My Account. Then click on Add/Remove features on your Tiscali phone line such as 1571 Voicemail or Caller Display (under Tiscali Talk)

2. Enter email address and password

3. Choose which phone number you wish to edit (if applicable)

4. Add/remove features of your choice.
