Top Tips for Securing Your Commercial Property

Whether you’re a warehouse, a shop or an industrial building, it’s a daunting prospect trying to work out the best way to secure your property and the valuables inside. When you’re sorting out stock levels, customers, invoices, sales and marketing queries, partnerships, suppliers, KPIs and health and safety issues, the last thing on your mind is if you should be installing CCTV or if access control would be useful addition to your security armour.

Broadsword Security can help

Your ability to make the right choice depends on a couple of factors – do your research into what security you need and how important each feature is to you in terms of return on investment. Are you in a risky area? Do you have lots of valuable stock? Are there dark areas in your premises? Do lots of people have access to your premises? Do you already have a system in place and just need an upgrade?

Then work out your options. Would CCTV be useful? Do you want an intruder alarm? Is access control right for you? Are your fire systems compliant with legislation? Is it important to you to have an app through which you can control your CCTV? Searching on the internet gives you a massive list of companies, all of which appear to offer you exactly what you need. So think about what’s important specifically to you and your business.

But before any of that, assess your risk levels and what you want – to help you through this initial phase, we’ve created a mini checklist that you can work through which will provoke some thoughts and questions that you’ll need to ask in order to be confident to make the right decision.

Here are ten things to check:

Assess your risk level – do you have lots of valuable equipment or stock? Do you handle cash? Are your premises in a high risk area?

Do you know your insurer’s requirements? Do you know if they have requirements about the type of alarm system or locks you have to use?

Are there areas of your premises that are hidden or dark? Are all your doors and windows always visible? Do you have external lighting?

Do you need CCTV? Do you want CCTV? If you have CCTV, is your supplier aware of data protection laws? Does it cover dark areas?

Do you have appropriate locks on your doors and windows? Should you consider grilles or shutters? Do you need any planning permission?

Who has a set of keys and what are your security procedures? Who is responsible for opening and locking up?

Do you need to control access to your premises? Do you have staff who work alone and how are they protected? Do you have panic buttons? Can you see everywhere in your premises at all times?

Do you have valuable items like laptops or tablets? Do you make sure that they’re out of sight? Have you security marked them? Do you lock them away every day when you close?

Are your emergency escape routes accessible? Do you carry out regular inspections to check the security of your access points?

Are your staff trained in your security procedures? Do you have security procedures? Do your staff know how to deal with emergencies?

Plus, most importantly, INSTALL A BROADSWORD SECURITY SYSTEM!

Access control: what are the future possibilities?

Access control: what are the future possibilities? In this article we look at three ways that technology is driving the development of access control for safer, more secure homes and businesses.

Contents

Why is access control important?

Smartphone integration means increased convenience

Biometric access control techniques for heightened security

What are the advantages of biometric security?

Manage multiple devices or systems from a single platform

Avoiding potential problems

Access control: what are the future possibilities?

Why is access control important?

Access control is an integral part of physical security systems, and multiple companies are developing cutting edge technologies to meet the need for more sophisticated and secure access technology. The goal is to make access as smooth and convenient as possible for individuals with authorisation, without compromising security aimed at preventing unwanted intruders.

1. Smartphone integration means increased convenience

One trend is the use of smartphones as a security badge for access control. Instead of having to carry a separate ID token that might get lost or forgotten, employees can check in with a device they are already carrying. This is accomplished through a technology known as Near Field Communications.

Another development in this areas is the smart bracelet, a piece of wearable technology used in some hotels to allow guests to access their rooms, pay for purchases, and check in on social networks.

2. Biometric access control techniques for heightened security

While Near Field Communications technology is about increasing convenience, the introduction of biometric readers is designed to heighten security. Readers can use fingerprint, facial, and even vein identification to provide access control.

Fingerprint recognition is the most common biometric technology. It’s relatively simple and costs less to implement than other forms of biometric security. In some cases, multiple methods of biometric identification are combined for even greater security. This technology is combined with a mobile phone ID as a duplicate security measure.

What are the advantages of biometric security?

There are two key advantages of biometric security. Firstly, biometric readers can be used in extreme environments where it’s impractical to carry a badge or ID token. Consider dirty or contaminated workplaces such as mines, oil rigs, and hospitals.

Secondly and most obviously, biometric readers are also more resistant to fraud because it’s harder to counterfeit or steal access. The iPhone X’s facial recognition software is perhaps the most recent example of this: as we become more interconnected across our devices and security risks increase, biometric security is becoming increasingly commonplace.

3. Manage multiple devices or systems from a single platform

Whether you have a large home or multiple offices, integrating physical and technological security into a cohesive system allows for efficient operation of all security from a single point.

Domestic properties have home automation systems.

For the workplace, security integration means that disparate services such as CCTV and fire monitoring are combined with restricted items, like HR and personnel records, into a single system. In the case of a fire or break in, the integrated security system would alert emergency personnel and the management team, while acting to close off access to sensitive areas and monitor the movements of those people still in the building.

Combining access control technologies to create a 2-factor or 3-factor access control is another trend. A MIFARE card can hold details about multiple security systems on one ID badge.

Access control: what are the future possibilities?

A continued trend towards system integration and increasing levels of interoperability will make it easier to monitor and control access at all times. Video analytics cameras can be used to create a system that allows only one person at a time to access a secured area. This virtually eliminates the risk of unauthorised personnel sneaking into an area by tailing someone else. Biometric scanners will become more affordable and widely adopted.

These improvements, as well as other technologies that will undoubtedly be developed, will ensure that access control continues to provide strong security while offering value for its investment.

The Cotswolds is full of gorgeous period and heritage properties, be they homes, businesses or places of historical interest. Many of them are situated in remote locations, away from near neighbours who would otherwise keep a careful eye on things.

Sadly, many period and heritage properties also have outdated – or worse still, token – security systems. In criminal circles, these kinds of properties are renowned for providing rich opportunities with minimal effort.

Are you worried? Get in touch for expert advice tailored to your requirements.

Modern security solutions for traditional homes

One of the reasons security is so poor in many traditional buildings comes down to aesthetics. It’s a common misconception that CCTV cameras and other security items will ruin the image of your traditional home.

As the owner of a listed or period property you are of course obliged to conform to a more stringent set of planning regulations than would apply to contemporary homes, so you are constrained by law. Still, it’s very possible to install visible security measures which act as deterrents and are nonetheless harmonious with the aesthetics of your property and its setting.

Discover some of the latest hi-tech security solutions and how they could complement your home.

Wireless technology is an asset in period properties

In an era of reliable wireless technology, protecting your traditional property without damaging its fabric is simple. There’s no need at all to have ugly wiring draped everywhere, and no reason to damage original features during the invasive process of hiding it.

Wireless technology also enables you to benefit from a belt-and-braces approach to security, because you’ll still have a functioning security system even if your phone line is cut.

Remote monitoring and viewing from your smartphone, wherever you are

Another asset for properties in the countryside, and indeed in large buildings, is the ability for owners to check in with their security system by smartphone or tablet. This way you can reassure yourself that all is well, even when you’re not able to visit in person.

It’s even possible to automate many security functions and control them remotely: you can turn on the lights in the building, lock or unlock doors, arm and disarm the security system and view live video streams, all over a secure internet connection.

Find out more about smart alarm systems.

How to secure your listed property or heritage building: the basics

Of course, even the most sophisticated security system is a waste of space if you don’t actually use it.

So make sure that your monitoring system and alarms are switched on and set to the correct mode at all times.

It’s sensible not to inflame the desires of the opportunistic thief by leaving valuables on display when they would be better locked away.

Review the strength of your door and window locks. Nowadays it’s possible to get some very heavy-duty locks installed which won’t be incompatible with traditional sensibilities, and this is one of the surest ways to protect your property.

Finally, make sure you set up an alert option on your alarm system so that the police and your security company are automatically informed whenever there’s an attempt at burglary.

Modern security is a must-have for your traditional home, especially if you’re in the countryside. Discreetly styled monitoring equipment and wireless technology make it possible to be secure and keep the period aesthetic intact. And you won’t fall foul of planning legislation, either.

What are the benefits of using a CCTV system in 2019?

We’ve gathered together some of the key benefits of using a CCTV system can have at your place of work and residency.

A CCTV (closed-circuit television) system allows the use of videos cameras to monitor the interior and exterior of a property, transmitting the signal to a monitor or set of monitors.

More and more of us are switching on the benefits of CCTV security systems. In the UK it is now estimated that there are more cameras per person than any other country in the world.

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Bernard Hogan Howe promoted the use of CCTV, saying that cameras should be installed by homeowners and businesses to help detectives solve crimes.

The need for residential and business CCTV systems is higher than ever before. With the number of police officers patrolling our streets hitting a record low, total recorded offences are up by 14%, as reported by The Independent in 2018.

Aside from the obvious advantage of being able to monitor your premises, here are the benefits of using a CCTV system in 2019:

1. Deter criminal activity

This is the biggest and most recognised benefit for those who choose to add CCTV systems to their property. Outside of being able to monitor your premises, CCTV cameras are an excellent deterrent for burglars.

Just like seeing a mounted alarm system, an intruder seeing cameras may decide that it’s easier and safer to move elsewhere. It’s much better to prevent intrusion than dealing with it after it’s occurred.

“Most criminals are pretty disorganised, they don’t think about it. The reason the cameras are high is two-fold. One is to keep it out of harm’s way.”

Studies have found that using CCTV in car parks resulted in a 51% decrease in crime; in public transportation areas a 23% decrease in crime; and in public settings, a 7% decrease in crime. Even the lowest figure, 7%, is a significant improvement.

A report written by the Office for National Statistics in 2017 found that 2 in 100 homes were victims of robberies, with 40% of incidents taking place during working hours whilst occupiers are away from their properties.

In the same report, 70% of burglars gain entry to homes via the front door, while the remaining 30% use windows as an entry point. Therefore, pointing cameras towards these routes of entry is the best and most strategic place to add your CCTV device.

2. Improved home insurance rates

By deterring criminal activity, CCTV security systems reduce your home and property insurance costs. You are less of a target, so the risk is lowered, which means the price of your insurance decreases too.

“If you’re the victim of burglary and your home isn’t properly secured, you may find that your home insurance provider could question your claim and refuse to reimburse you for any loss.”

As well as being less of a target, CCTV offers evidence towards insurance claims that you may not have had otherwise.

The more evidence you have to support your claim, the better, proving beyond doubt the circumstances surrounding your claim.

Find out more about how security cameras can potentially reduce your home insurance costs.

3. Peace of mind

A camera system provides people with an increased sense of security and reassurance, particularly in areas where the crime rate is high.

Many of the more sophisticated models are wireless, meaning they can be viewed and monitored from your smartphone or tablet.

This gives you the ability to check in and review your premises at the click of a button, so your home security is always in reach.

“As importantly, you get a whole shot of what happened at the event: What did they steal? Did they use a knife? You get all that. But more relevant today is a face. That’s what we need.”

It acts as a comfort blanket, giving you the freedom to get on with your life, confident that your property is being watched.

4. Cost-effective

A CCTV system is a cost-effective form of security. Once the system has been installed they are very easy to maintain and require little reparations.

Ensure that your cameras are cleaned in order to receive the best performance from your system. Other than this, CCTV systems will keep your premises secure for years.

Broadsword provides maintenance services for any security device as well as CCTV repairs. If you require assistance, please contact us.

Are you worried about your property security?

Protecting your home or business isn’t as complicated or expensive as you may think. Modern security systems aren’t just for massive corporations.

A modest initial outlay will buy a set up tailored to your requirements, help to protect people, and prevent costly theft or damage.

The technology is easy to understand, simple to use, and cost effective to maintain. Don’t wait until the worst happens. Thinking ahead now will save you a lot of money and stress in the long run.

How high tech security devices make a safer home or workplace

High tech security devices are increasing popular for both homeowners and business owners. Find out more about them and how they could improve the security of your home or business.

High tech security devices are increasing popular for both homeowners and business owners. The recent technological revolution has provided unique opportunities in a number of different industries to improve products and services beyond what was previously thought possible. In particular, property security has been boosted by a number of invaluable developments to the products on offer.

This new security technology has made it increasingly hard for criminals to conduct their activity without raising the alarm and being caught. But what is it, and how does it work?

Want to know more about protecting your home or business? Talk to an expert.

1. Monitor who is coming and going from your property

Modern access control systems are now more complex to evade than ever. They can be designed for commercial buildings or houses.

For workplaces, access control systems can grant access during certain hours, deny access during other periods, generate detailed reports, trace exact movement, and more. The systems that we install can even email you if somebody in the workforce leaves a door open on premises. Using these intelligent systems, you can be secure in the knowledge that everything is logged and monitored effectively.

The same principles apply for home security, making sure only authorised users like family or close friends have access to your property. It is one of the best examples of how high tech security devices can be used to keep your loved ones safe.

2. CCTV systems that can’t be compromised or tampered with

Improved camera technology has ensured that criminals can no longer easily hide from being recognised by CCTV systems.

Pictures have become less grainy and cameras have become more flexible. Technological advances have allowed for cameras to be smaller—perfect for people who want to implement covert CCTV. However, in many cases home and business owners want their cameras to be a deterrent more than anything else. The make-up of cameras has adapted to ensure that they are difficult to vandalise.

Discover how wireless security cameras are powered.

3. Monitoring stations that link to your alarms so your property is always being watched over

With the developing technology across the board, and better all round cost-effectiveness, alarms are now often installed as part of a wider security system implementation.

Alarms work most effectively when combined with other security solutions. Detection systems have got much better in the last few years and are highly effective in monitoring the property’s access points. Alarms can feed through to a 24/7 manned receiving centre, where the operator is able to contact the police without the intruders ever knowing they are on their way.

See how a smart alarm system could protect your property.

New security technology 2018

Technology continues to advance at a rapid rate and the wide range of high tech security products available to homeowners and business owners reflects this. We understand the benefits of security technology for our customers, which is how we are able to offer our customers a selection of suitable products, tailored to their unique location and concerns.

We offer the full range of security systems, including access control systems, wireless CCTV and monitored alarms.

How to protect your property from vandalism

If you’re wondering how to protect your property from vandalism, you’re probably either worried about vandalism or a victim of it.

To be clear, vandalism is the damage or defacement of private or public property without the express consent of the owner, and it counts as criminal damage.

There are numerous acts of vandalism every day in the UK. The most common include breaking windows, lighting small fires, fly-tipping, and graffiti. Most of these are small-time and can be repaired quite easily with minimal stress. When your property is vandalised, however, it becomes a different matter.

Want to know more about how we can protect your home or business? Talk to an expert.

Property vandalism in the UK

For most of us, our homes are the biggest investments we ever make in our lives. Whether you are a first-time homeowner or have recently inherited a large country estate, protecting this investment is important. So is feeling safe at home.

If you are a business owner, you may also have commercial properties. Your business is your livelihood and business property is a serious asset. Protecting this from criminal damage and other illegal activity is sensible.

How do you prevent vandalism

There are several simple ways to reduce the likelihood of vandalism to your property. They don’t require much effort, they’re easy to implement, and they all start outdoors.

Street lighting. Lighting puts off vandalism. Criminals don’t like to feel like they are being watched. If you have street lights in your neighbourhood, make sure they work. Contact your local council or authority if they break or stop working. Ideal for urban areas.

Plant up your garden. Another option is to remove your property from the reach and attention of vandals by strategically planting bushes and other shrubs. Place these in locations where vandals might gain unauthorised access to your premises or use them to decorate walls, removing a surface to vandalise in the first place. Ideal for rural locations.

Keep your driveway or premises clean and tidy. You might not value your rubbish but it could well catch the attention of a criminal as something to steal, break, or use to cause further damage. This is especially true of younger vandals acting out of boredom. Remove temptation by taking large objects to the skip and ensuring other waste and rubbish is bagged tightly.

Keep outhouses, sheds, and stockrooms locked. This also goes for items like bikes and expensive gardening equipment. Anything stored outside of your property is more vulnerable to being damaged or stolen. Getting into the basic routine of securing these every evening will keep them safe, whether they are personal possessions or company assets.

Stay vigilant. This extends beyond your property to the rest of the neighbourhood. Catching criminal activity on other properties can help you convict vandals, removing them as an immediate threat and reducing the risk of vandalism in the future. Neighbours will also appreciate this attitude, making them more likely to return the favour. This means an extra pair of friendly eyes on your home or business premises, even when you’re not there.

How to protect your property from vandalism: security systems

Solutions to stop vandalism also include security systems. Depending on the property type and its use, you can choose from a wide range of security technology. We have advised some of the most appropriate systems below:

CCTV systems

The presence of cameras makes your property a much less appealing target. Vandals rarely want to get caught on camera, especially when footage can be used to ID them and convict them in court.

Modern CCTV systems come in a huge range of models, from the basic to the sophisticated. You can even monitor some cameras remotely from your phone, giving you control of your security from your pocket.

Learn exactly how CCTV improves the security of your property.

Burglar and fire alarms

Burglar alarms can be set up to trigger if the vandal goes to far as to attempt to break into your home. We recommend these for high-risk areas with a history of criminal activity or homes with especially valuable contents. Businesses should have them as standard.

Fire alarms are also a legal requirement in most commercial buildings. If a vandal starts a fire, it could mean the difference between fire damage and a destroyed property.

Automated gates

Make it as difficult for a vandal to cross your premises with an automated gate system. They can’t damage your property if they can’t reach it. Ideal for country estates and properties with large driveways. Gates can be designed to complement the look and feel of your property, providing discreet home security.

Reporting vandalism

You won’t need to worry about how to protect your property from vandalism if local vandals have been caught and charged. For this reason, if your property has been vandalised, you should always contact the police. The same applies if you catch somebody in an act of vandalism.

If public property has been vandalised, the best point of contact is the local authority. Finally, if any form of public transport has been vandalised, contact the transport company. If the vandalism has taken place in London, the British Transport Police are your best bet.

What are the penalties for vandalism?

The three factors surrounding penalties and punishment for vandalism include the damage inflicted, costs of repair, and the amount of disruption caused. Smaller acts of vandalism make up the majority of these crimes and are dealt with in the Magistrates Court.

The maximum penalty for vandalism that costs less than £5,000 to repair is three months imprisonment or a fine of £2,500. If damage is more than £5,000, the maximum punishment is six months imprisonment or a fine of £5,000.

Penalising young offenders

Given that most vandals are under 16, it is often necessary for alternatives to imprisonment or hefty fines to be meted out. Police and local authorities have the discretion to issue on-the-spot fines of £50 for those under 16 and £80 for those aged 16 and over.

While vandalism rates continue to drop, it’s safe to say that it will always be a part of our society. Stronger penalties for under 16s and the move from property vandalism toward cyber-based crime may go some way toward reducing vandalism rates but you can always do your bit by ensuring your home or business employs basic security measures.

If you’re still wondering how to protect your property from vandalism, find out more about the different security measures you can use.

Protecting your shop during the festive period

Gov.uk notes that between 2012 and 2014, “the number of thefts in the wholesale and retail sector has fallen by around a third, from 15,836 to 10,319 incidents per 1,000 premises”. Despite this, crime remains an ever-present threat for business owners throughout the country, in particular over the festive period.

Christmas is well known for being a chaotic time when high streets are bustling with people from early in the morning until late at night. It’s no surprise that with increased footfall comes increased crime rates. If you’re a shopkeeper, this can be especially daunting; the last thing you want at this time of the year is to get burgled and lose revenue. The good news is that there are lots of things you can do to reduce the risk of burglary.

From proper risk assessment to security measures, here are some of the best ways of improving your shop security during the busiest time of year.

Risk assessment

It is best practice to carry out a risk assessment in good time for Christmas, in order to stay ahead of the game. This improves your awareness of vulnerable points throughout your premises. It also enables you to consider these vulnerabilities critically, so you can think about how best to protect them.

This is also a good time to get in touch with a crime prevention officer at your local council or police station, and find out about the different types of crime happening in the area so you have the right information to protect yourself.

Action point: Come up with a plan of what security measures are going to be most effective for your type of business in the area that you trade.

Staff

It can be tempting to hire quickly in the run up to Christmas, in order to manage staff levels and ensure appropriate staff cover for peak trade. This is not the time to cut corners, however. Depending on your particular recruitment habit, we don’t advise you employ anyone without proper references and a clear employment history.

Be careful when granting access to security codes and keys. Ensure your employees are trustworthy before you grant them full access. At the end of each trading day, cash up carefully and check out any discrepancies with the till.

Train your staff in good time before the Christmas rush, so they’re on the lookout for suspicious behaviour.

Give out information as a group to establish a team effort in avoiding or reporting crime.

Often the presence of store representatives can deter thieves. Make sure there are procedures in place to keep as many staff on the shop floor as possible.

Action point: Create a clear theft policy, outlining what your staff should do in the event of theft or burglary, and incorporate this into your team’s basic training.

Monitor your premises

Your shop is most vulnerable when there’s no staff on the premises, so make sure it’s secure at all times of the day and night. There are a number of affordable ways you can realistically achieve this.

A building is only as secure as its access points. Shutters and grills will add more protection to these areas, helping to protect your property against unauthorised access.

Install CCTV to deter opportunistic crime and maintain a video record of anyone trying to enter the building.

Get a high quality alarm system so that if the worst happens, the police can be notified in an instant, improving response rates and making criminal action less inviting.

You could even put signs up warning that the building is under surveillance and is alarmed as a further deterrent.

Action point: At Broadsword Security we offer a wide range of security product designed to increase the protection of your premises.

With careful planning and some good systems in place, there’s much less chance of your shop being at risk during the festive period. By keeping it secure and making it known that you’re using security measures, you can deter both preplanned and opportunistic crime, for a secure, profitable Christmas.
