Anyone who says there is nothing happening in Perth hasn't walked through the streets...with fringe festival, carnival in Fremantle and now Perth Festival there is way to much stuff to do.

Last night was the first big event for the Perth Festival with a Cirque de Sole style wore show across all the buildings around council house and they dropped 2 ton of feathers...it was amazing and if we can do more things like this we are onto something. I have been lucky enough to be selected as one of 13 Foundation for Young Australians - 2011 Young Social Pioneers. I am part of this with an impressive group of people and will be heading back to Melbourne ever few months to participate in a range of training and development. 

One part of the program and something I have been thinking about for a while now is finding a mentor. One area I would like to get a better insight into is Politics and Politicians so I thought that could be a good start...so next question...anyone know and politicians?

Should be a great year. 

About Young Social Pioneers

The Young Social Pioneers program brings 14 change makers together each year to develop their leadership skills and support their vision for social change.
During their 12 month journey FYA provides each Pioneer with professional training, workshops and strategic advice, and connects them with like minded professionals. During this time participants learn how to develop their initiatives to a sustainable level.
 
The project currently has 28 alumni whose ideas have affected over 50,000 people around the world. Young Australians aged between 18 and 29 with a social change project are encouraged to apply. When young people are given the platform to contribute, whole communities feel the benefit.

I like this -

The Cult of Done Manifesto by Bre Pettis and Kio Stark. They wrote it in 20 minutes, “because we only had 20 minutes to get it done.”

  1. There are three states of being. Not knowing, action and completion.
  2. Accept that everything is a draft. It helps to get it done.
  3. There is no editing stage.
  4. Pretending you know what you’re doing is almost the same as knowing what you are doing, so just accept that you know what you’re doing even if you don’t and do it.
  5. Banish procrastination. If you wait more than a week to get an idea done, abandon it.
  6. The point of being done is not to finish but to get other things done.
  7. Once you’re done you can throw it away.
  8. Laugh at perfection. It’s boring and keeps you from being done.
  9. People without dirty hands are wrong. Doing something makes you right.
  10. Failure counts as done. So do mistakes.
  11. Destruction is a variant of done.

Over the last eight months we have been working on our first big project through Social innovation in Western Australia. We were looking for proven ways to increase the opportunity for Innovation and Collaboration and through that process have found a number of co-working and collaboration spaces teamed with support programs that provide some very positive outcomes. 

On Tuesday we had our first event to start the community building and co-creation of a space on St Georges Terrace. Full details of the space can be found on www.hubperth.org and we will be updating with more information as this process continues over the coming months. 

There is still a lot of work to do in relation to getting more partners onboard and designing a space people that organically encourages innovation however we have made a solid start and now it is all about maintaining momentum...the plan is to have it open by October 2011. I was recently in Hong Kong and was lucky enough to attend the opening of the Hong Kong General Chamber of Social Enterprise. I put together a blog post for the Centre for Social Impacts blog. It is worth reading to see the difference between Australia and HK approach to social enterprise support. Feedback in their blog comments would be appreciated. 

One of the key differences and where I think we can learn from Hong Kong is in the focus on market solutions to social needs, the conversation we are having around Government’s obligation to support social service providers does not exist in Hong Kong. The Government has taken the same approach to Social Enterprise as it has with the powerhouse that is their financial industry. By facilitating the growth of this ecosystem through collaboration with corporates who “get it” and then they do something which has proven really hard for our Government…get out of the way and see what develops – let the market decide.

Leadership WA is a program I looked at last year however decided the timing was not right. For such a great program it is not that well known within the WA community...more information below on the info sessions they have coming up. 

Leadership Western Australia is delighted to announce that our recruitment process for the 2012 Leadership Program has commenced. We are holding information sessions in June and all prospective applicants and their sponsors are encouraged to attend one of these sessions to find out about the 2012 Leadership Program and the Community Engagement work of Leadership WA. Organisations and leaders interested in finding out more about the work of Leadership WA are also welcome to attend one of the information sessions.

 

As the premier community leadership organisation in Western Australia, Leadership WA’s Program places are competitive. Leadership WA is seeking a diverse range of applicants to ensure that the 2012 cohort includes leaders from a range of sectors including all levels of Government, the Community and NFP sector, and the Corporate and Small Business sector.  Regional applicants and Indigenous leaders are encouraged to apply. Applications will be accepted from 1 July 2011.
