I thought I would repost the below about Startup Weekend Perth that happened for the first time last weekend…it was huge and as you will see from below everyone got a lot out of it.

Not only did you survive the inaugural Startup Weekend Perth, you have also navigated the most extreme strain of Monday-itis known to humankind: post-Startup Weekend Monday-itis!

A lot has already happened since we shared the awesomeness of #SWPerth together… Threadster attracted the attention of PerthNow; the PLUG guys posted everyone’s final presentations for the world to enjoy on YouTube; we shared a bunch of photos from Friday night on Facebook (photos from Sunday night coming soon!); Spacecubed has been signing up new members left, right and centre; I have personally seen people describe the event as “life changing” and “the most ‘get out your comfort zone’ weekend of my life”; mentor Charlie Gunningham wrote a terrific blog about his experience at Startup Weekend Perth; and our uber-judge Hugh Mason shared an awesome video featuring interviews with wunder-facilitator (and honourary Aussie) Dave Moskovitz, Chief Mentor Wrangler Marcus Tan and others!

Congratulations to our worthy winners Giftit.so, runners-up BreakEven, superstar designerKarl Brightman and the dev team from YourStop, plus notable mentions to Threadster andHairpin, both of whom have already won me over as a customer! We will be in touch with the winners again soon, and Dave will contact all teams to ensure you got the most out of your #SWPerth experience.

In the meantime, we would love to hear exactly what you thought of Startup Weekend Perth, your highlights and ideas for how we can improve it. Thanks once again to all our participants, mentors, judges and sponsors for making Startup Weekend Perth such a memorable event. As a testament of their sheer awesomeness, the PLUG guys kept working around the clock until they had uploaded videos of all teams’ final presentations – at 3am on Sunday night! Anyone who says there is nothing happening in Perth hasn’t walked through the streets…with fringe festival, carnival in Fremantle and now Perth Festival there is way to much stuff to do.

Last night was the first big event for the Perth Festival with a Cirque de Sole style wore show across all the buildings around council house and they dropped 2 ton of feathers…it was amazing and if we can do more things like this we are onto something. Young Social Pioneers 2011

I have been lucky enough to be selected as one of 13 Foundation for Young Australians - 2011 Young Social Pioneers. I am part of this with an impressive group of people and will be heading back to Melbourne ever few months to participate in a range of training and development.

One part of the program and something I have been thinking about for a while now is finding a mentor. One area I would like to get a better insight into is Politics and Politicians so I thought that could be a good start…so next question…anyone know and politicians?

Should be a great year.

About Young Social Pioneers

The Young Social Pioneers program brings 14 change makers together each year to develop their leadership skills and support their vision for social change.
During their 12 month journey FYA provides each Pioneer with professional training, workshops and strategic advice, and connects them with like minded professionals. During this time participants learn how to develop their initiatives to a sustainable level.

The project currently has 28 alumni whose ideas have affected over 50,000 people around the world. Young Australians aged between 18 and 29 with a social change project are encouraged to apply. When young people are given the platform to contribute, whole communities feel the benefit.

I like this -

The Cult of Done Manifesto by Bre Pettis and Kio Stark. They wrote it in 20 minutes, “because we only had 20 minutes to get it done.”

There are three states of being. Not knowing, action and completion.
Accept that everything is a draft. It helps to get it done.
There is no editing stage.
Pretending you know what you’re doing is almost the same as knowing what you are doing, so just accept that you know what you’re doing even if you don’t and do it.
Banish procrastination. If you wait more than a week to get an idea done, abandon it.
The point of being done is not to finish but to get other things done.
Once you’re done you can throw it away.
Laugh at perfection. It’s boring and keeps you from being done.
People without dirty hands are wrong. Doing something makes you right.
Failure counts as done. So do mistakes.
Destruction is a variant of done.
If you have an idea and publish it on the internet, that counts as a ghost of done.
Done is the engine of more.
