It was a long trip for most competitors at the Show Horse Council Queensland Country Hack Championships. They are held annually at the Maryborough show grounds. Competitors came from northern New South Wales, south east Queensland and the central coast. The weather was great for the most with only a couple of showers dampening the spirits on the second day of competition.

We were thrilled with the performance of Brookville Go for Gold / Torchwood – stable name “Mitchell”, owned by Joanne Uppington and Mick Clark. He is by our stallion Pendley Gold Cup * and out of our thoroughbred mare Sunlit Plain. He lined up with an impressive field of new season galloways and worked to be Champion First Season Galloway of the Year. Beautifully ridden by Ashley Cooper this little horse is a pleasure to watch.

“Mitchell” and Ashley, along with owners Joanne and Mick , now move onto competition at Equestrian Queensland this coming weekend at Park Ridge show grounds. Ashley and “Mitchell” will be mixing it with the best. Good luck to the team.

Galloway day dawned on the Wednesday – People’s Day -and the weather was sensational. It was a photographers dream come true with many magnificent equines gracing the rings coats glistening in the sunshine. Of particular interest to Brookville Stud was the over 14.2 hh novice galloway class. Our home bred Brookville Go for Gold / Torchwood (Pendley Gold Cup* x Sunlit Plain tb) – 5 year old gelding, stable name “Mitchell” was sashed Reserve Champion Novice Galloway. We were absolutely thrilled to see he and Ashley under the Ekka’s horseshoe archway received his broad sash. This beautiful boy was only broken in in January this year. He has an unflappable temperament and performs like a seasoned campaigner. The novice championship went to the current Grand National Large Galloway champion.

However, things got even better for the combination of Torchwood and his rider Ashley Cooper. They secured second in the Open Heavyweight Galloway – standing in the presentation lineup flanked either side by the current Show Horse Council Grand National Champion Large Galloway in first and the current Equestrian Federation of Australia’s Large Galloway champion in third. Ashley and Torchwood also came second in the Gent’s Galloway class. We are so, so happy for owners Joanne Uppington and Mick Clark. Joanne’s eye for detail in presentation and her feeding program has seen her take this beautiful but paddock conditioned boy here at home to some extraordinary wins in such a short time in the show ring. We believe Brookville Go for Gold / Torchwood will have a fabulous saddle career.

It was thrilling to see Tremayne Gold Charm known as “Louis” ( x Pendley Gold Cup*) win his riding pony gelding class at Brisbane Royal. On the previous day “Louis” had won his Saddle Pony Led. What a mega star! Beautifully presented by Susan Paine the little fellow strutted his stuff effortlessly. Susan and “Louis” debuted under saddle at the Gold Coast Show last weekend and were sashed Champion Newcomer Riding Pony, Champion Led Saddle Pony and Reserve Champion Ridden Saddle Pony. Congratulations go to Tremayne Stud’s principal Kristen Bates- Taunton for breeding another Gold Cup cutie in the winners circle. Like Brookville Go for Gold / Torchwood, his half brother we predict a big saddle future for this little guy.

Good luck to all with Pendley Gold Cup* youngsters. Do let us know your show results when you can.

Saturday’s competition at Equestrian Queensland saw the lovely Elvonara Park First Class (Pendley Gold Cup* x (Owendale Dreamtime [Mat's Mischief of Astral x Owencdale Postcard]) win the Large Pony competition. Beautifully ridden by a smiling Bridget Chalmers this win was particularly sweet for Bridget and her mum Lani because this was the very first time this little guy had stepped into a show ring.

The Champion Newcomer Large Galloway at Equestrian Queensland’s Newcomers went to our home bred Brookville Go for Gold / Torchwood. Terry and I were delighted for owners Joanne Uppington, Mick Clark and rider Ash Cooper. We got the news of this win seconds before boarding our flight in Singapore to return to Brisbane. Mitchell is out of our thoroughbred mare Sunlit Plain, herself a Forest Glow mare. Joanne advised me “Mitch” went beautifully for Ashley and executed the required lengthen trot like a seasoned campaigner. Thank you Amie Barclay for allowing us to use your lovely photos.

Sunday morning dawned overcast and drizzly. The first competition at Show Horse Council of Queensland’s Rising Star was the in hand led youngstock. Winning his class and ultimately garlanded Champion Rising Star Youngstock in Hand was the exquisite Tremayne Gold Charm, Pendley Gold Cup* x Kolbeach Bracelet (Jacket’s Bluebird x Colbeach Solitaire). This little pony is no stranger to the winner’s circle. When entire, he won numerous in hand supremes for his breeder Kristen Bates- Taunton. He is now commencing his saddle career and is in the capable hands of Susan Paine.

Well that’s newcomers done and dusted for June here in Queensland. Both Terry and I predict big futures for these three exquisite youngsters. We are proud of the three of you and extend mega congratulations to all owners, riders and support team members for producing these boys so well to achieve their respective wins. Good luck for the rest of 2012 and beyond.

Well here’s a photo of one very happy little girl Kaitlin Labahn with her lovely pony Whitmere Fascination (stable name Whitney) recently winning the Equestrian Australia Victorian Newcomer 12hh and under.

This little pony is quite something for a newcomer. She also has shown her fabulous nature obtaining Runner Up Leading Rein at the Show Horse Council Horse of the Year in November 2011. This was her first ever leading rein class! Emily Murray was her jockey on that occasion and Simon de Leeuw the handsome handler.

Whitney is out of the beautiful mare Kiabe Promise Me (Silkwood Chalkstream x Kiabe Reinette) and by our boy Pendley Gold Cup*.

With a little bit of luck I might get to meet Kaitlin, her mum Michelle and Whitney on my visit to Barastoc this weekend. Not even sure if they are competing.

But good luck guys if you are and best wishes to all competitors for a fabulous Barastoc 2012. Please let there be sunshine and balmy days.

Congratulations goes to Joanne Uppington and Mick Clark who purchased Brookville Go for Gold last year. “Mitchell” is his stable name and today he and his rider Ashley Cooper won the maiden, novice and were sashed Champion Novice Galloway at the EFA Hack Day in the indoor arena at Gatton showgrounds. Yes that’s what I said INDOOR. The weather in South East Queensland has seen torrential rain and storms – yesterday evening being no exception. With saturated grounds the show was reconvened indoors. Ashley and “Mitchell” warmed up indoors where he worked a treat and coped like a seasoned horse for the entire day’s competition.

Terry and I were delighted when Joanne and Mick decided to purchase “Mitchell”. We know he has gone to the very best of show homes and will reach his potential in their expert hands. He is by our lovely stallion Pendley Gold Cup* and out of our beautiful 16.2 hh thoroughbred mare Sunlit Plain ( x Forrest Glow TB). Mitch’s rider is the well known and talented Ashley Cooper who is in love with this young horse. Ashley tells me he’s never had such a wonderfully well mannered and quiet horse and is enjoying working with “Mitchell” immensely. Joanne and Mick sing this young horse’s praises and so enjoy having him in their stable of show horses. Hopefully this great start today is the beginnings of more championships for all concerned. We certainly believe in him and believe he will bring in the gold for their team.

Well done Joanne, Mick, Ashley and “Mitchell”.

This photo is very similar to the one we used in our advertisement in the Australian Riding Pony Annual 2011. I loved the artwork done by Lorelle Mercer, who is a great designer and the original photos were taken by Darren Moore Photography. I have gotten to know Darren and his lovely partner Katrina when visiting Christchurch over the years for the NZ National Showcase Show, NZ Grand National Horse and Pony of the Year Show and Canterbury Royal Shows. Hence the following article. One I wished to share with you.

Robyn and Denis Bailey are the principals of Amberleigh Stud, Amberley in Canterbury, about 45 minutes out of Christchurch. Robyn first approached me several years ago to obtain semen to use on her mare Taratanaui Muirlea Rise. The results are A Gold Star and A Gold Touch. Beautiful ponies. The Baileys has been fortunate enough to get four fillies from four attempts at a.i. How’s that for wonderful luck. Jane Bailey, their daughter in law, is married to their son Jason. Jane and Denis break in the ponies and Jane gets them going at home. She has a lovely touch with the ponies and her horses and knows them all so very well. The team is a credit to all the Bailey family.

All ponies featured here are sired by our boy Pendley Gold Cup*. The pony in the foreground is Amberleigh Prima Donna. Stable name “Abby”, she is the youngest pony under saddle in the show team. Lightly shown, she never fails to bring in a big ribbon. ”Abby” is ridden by the loveliest of young ladies Gemma Holden. I was fortunate to meet Gemma and her mum Tara and grandma Ainsley last month at the Canterbury A & P Show. The photo above has Thomas (TJ) Madigan from Australia riding her.

The centre photo has TJ riding the beautiful Amberleigh Gold Star “Katie”. This elegant pony has amassed Supreme and Championship awards in her career. She was the first Gold Cup progeny born in New Zealand. We are very proud of her achievements.

The third pony in the photo is Amberleigh Gold Touch – “Janey”. She’s ridden here by Gemma Holden and this combination took home Champion 138cm Open Pony, Champion Dry Mare and Supreme Riding Pony Under Saddle at Canterbury A & P. I was so happy I cried! Crazy grandma I am (grandma to the pony, not Gemma of course!).

Will be back in New Zealand in 2012 to again follow the achievements of these youngsters.

This picture tells a million stories! November 2011 at the Show Horse Council Victoria Horse of the Year, in pouring rain Emily Murray and Simon de Leeuw negotiated their lead rein workout to attain Runner Up Lead Rein Pony of the Year. Smiling all the way, this very accomplished little rider and her dapper handler Simon made the best of very trying conditions. It goes to show just what the tried and true “showies” will put up with!

Whitmere Fascination, stable name “Whitney” handled the conditions to the best of her ability. She is out of the beautiful mare Kiabe Promise Me (Silkwood Chalkstream x Kiabe Reinette) and by Gold Cup. Owned by the lovely Michelle Labahn this little pony has secured a qualifier to attend the 2012 Show Horse Council of Australasia Grand Nationals. We wish this combination the very best of luck.

Brookville Stud announces the sale of the ten month old filly Brookville Golden Globe – stable name “Ellie” – to Lesley Paxton – Raleigh Riding Ponies. When Matt Lee visited our stud earlier this year to pick up a broodmare he saw this flashy youngster. She was still on her mum at the time. She took Matt’s eye and he went home and hasn’t stopped talking about her to me since then. Monday evening last Matt phoned to say Lesley Paxton – Raleigh Riding Ponies - wanted her and she was sold. Miss Centastage has done a tremendous job raising her youngster and now the weaning process is well and truly over “Ellie” looks a million dollars. She is proving to be easy to handle and has a lovely quiet temperament inherited from both her sire and lovely dam. Her movement is sensational and she will “dress up” nearly jet black, with three socks and a lovely sized star and snip.

Brookville Stud wishes Leslie Paxton – Raleigh Riding Ponies the very best wishes for a great future with Ellie. May she bring you lots of broad ribbons and eventually cross beautiful with Raleigh’s sires to produce the next generation of superstars.

Sire: Pendley Gold Cup (Imp) Dam: Colbeach Simone (Imp)

Always running a little late with our website updates but as I stated in a facebook post just after this year’s Grand Nationals, this beautiful little mare is bred in the purple. Rosedale Simona was recently crowned 2011 Grand National Small Pony of Australasia. She is out of the sensational imported mare Colbeach Simone, owned by Christine Comley (Rosedale Stud, South Australia) and by our boy, Pendley Gold Cup*. Colbeach Simone won just about everything possible under saddle, including the Grand Nationals of Australasia. Gold Cup also had an illustrious career both here and in the United Kingdom.

Leah Baguley , her daughter, come rider Laura and Laura’s aunt Wendy Sevil have been celebrating since the event and are grateful to Greg Gerry and Darren Telford of Whitmere Stud for leasing them this young mare. Simona lives with Wendy and is loved equally by the three ladies.

So happy for all connections – Christine, Leah, Laura, Wendy, Greg and Darren.

Best wishes everyone.

… so says Suzy Toronto – www.suzytoronto.com Suzy it the author of my 2011 Calendar and her quote for March 2011 is as follows…. (as promised my myself for the beginning days of each month)

Art Does Not Have To Match Your Sofa

I want to know where it says,

“The art you put in your home has to match your sofa.”

First of all, art is not meant to decorate your home … art is meant to decorate your soul.

It is the signature of every civilization that ever left its mark on earth.

It breaks all the rules and shakes off the dust of everyday life.

With a power like that, who cares if it matches your sofa?

LET IT MATCH YOUR SOUL!

Thanks Suzy. Another gem worth sharing.

Have a great March everyone!

Cheers, Leonie
