I strongly agree with Hill. We live in a society where technology is the driving force. Being knowledgeable about how a computer can be used as a tool is an important skill, if one wants to be able to compete in the job market. Just having a computer and knowing the basic functions of turning it on and accessing the internet is not enough. Having the knowledge and skills to use it to create, publish, research, and network is what will make one marketable. Of course, even with this knowledge one still has to continue to build their skills. You have to continue to learn and stay on top of software and hardware updates, and basically stay on the cutting edge. Unfortunately, having access to computers, the internet, software, training, etc. is a privilege and not a right.

The split between those having access to a computer and the internet, and those that do not, is only one of the problems. We also need to look at the importance of having access to training in order to use the technology effectively. Further, there is also the issue of keeping one’s skills up-to-date with the latest software applications, and hardware upgrades; both of which are time consuming and often costly. Computer technology is a complex field with many facets to learn. It is scary when you think about the fact that we live in a technology driven society, and there are so many people that still don’t have access to a computer, the internet, and training. Simply owning a computer and having internet access isn’t going to bridge the “digital divide” gap. Setting up community technology centers in low-income neighborhoods is a start.
