Google has unleashed extensions and their bookmark sync feature on stable builds of Google Chrome today. If you’ll remember, the bookmark sync feature was enabled in Windows beta builds back in November, and support for extensions was announced for both Windows and Linux beta builds last month. It looks like users of stable Chrome builds on Linux and Mac may need to wait a bit, still, however:

To those using Google Chrome on Linux, extensions are enabled on the beta channel. And for those using Google Chrome for Mac, hang tight — we’re working on bringing extensions, bookmark sync and more to the beta soon.

If you’re on Windows, you can either wait to be updated to the new build automatically over the course of the next week, or you can manually upgrade if you want to get your hands on the new features right away.

Once you’ve got the new build, you can head over to Google Chrome Extensions to start extending your browser. Or you can head on over to the Google Chrome Blog to find out more about what’s included in the new build.

If you haven’t already heard, Firefox 3.6 will be officially released today. If you’re interested in what goes into a Firefox release, you can follow along live with the release of Firefox 3.6 over at Air Mozilla. As I write this, several Mozilla employees are introducing themselves to those who are watching. There appear to be two groups, one from Mountainview, California, and the other from Toronto, Canada, participating in the live video feed, at least at the time being. Several minutes ago, Mike Beltzner, Mozilla’s Director of Firefox, appeared to announce that Firefox 3.6 will go live on the website around 8:25 to 8:40 Eastern time. Given the current time, I’m guessing that’s PM. That being said, firefox.com currently redirects to http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/upgrade.html which officially points to the Firefox 3.6 download and reports that the new version has already been downloaded over 37,500 times.

Head on over to Air Mozilla to follow along with the release day proceedings.

Despite the fact that Firefox 3.6 RC1 was released on schedule yesterday, it has received very little attention from the usual official outlets, as far as I can tell. For example, there is no mention of the new release candidate on the main Firefox page, and there has been no mention of the release via Firefox’s Twitter account.

Nevertheless, the RC1 build looks official, and the following are some of its key features and changes:

Changes have been made to the way third party software integrates with Firefox in an attempt to avoid crashes.

Nearly 100 bugs have been fixed since the last beta build to improve stability, performance, etc.

JavaScript can now be loaded asynchronously, another performance boost.

Improved DOM, CSS and HTML5 support.

If you decide to give Firefox 3.6 RC1 a spin, feel free to share your thoughts on the new release here in comments.

Update: I should clarify that the RC1 build is at least mentioned on the beta releases page.

I caught wind of emoko today via Twitter user Cole Geissinger. The key thing that stands out about emoko is how it was built:

emoko is a web browser just like FireFox or Internet Explorer, with one big difference - emoko is built using video game technology.

The browser apparently renders pages in a “3D world,” and users’ avatars in that 3D world can interact (via text and voice chat, or drawing on the page) with one another, as long as they are visiting the same web page. The version at the time of writing is version 0.9.6225, and it is the second major update according to the browser’s website.

The following video demonstrates emoko’s vision of how the browser works:

Now that we’ve seen the video, I have to admit that I’ve actually installed and played around with emoko a bit. Unfortunately, my experience wasn’t anything like what you see in the video. The browser felt more like a Java app to me than it did a video game. Even on my fairly powerful computer, things felt a bit slow and jittery. If it’s possible to tilt web pages, create avatars and find other users in emoko, I couldn’t figure out how to do it. The best I could do is get a feel for the interface, which in itself is a bit different than what is offered up in the video:

Don’t let me be the judge, though. If you’re into trying new things, give emoko a spin yourself and definitely let me know if you have a different experience than I did. Regardless, it’s good to see people thinking outside of the box with web browser development. This one may just be a little too far out of the box for my liking.

This one is pretty funny, but maybe wouldn’t be as funny if it was true: someone filed a Firefox bug claiming installing Firefox disabled his or her IE8 add-ons.

WebKit received one of InfoWorld’s 2010 Technology of the Year awards for being a “tool for creating cross-platform smartphone development,” whatever that means.

Yahoo! Answers, which is one of the most useless sites on the Internet, in my opinion, runs the gamut in attempting to answer the question “which language should I use to create a web browser?“

Harry Parsonage went to great lengths to write a “forensics” paper on how privacy can be put at risk by various web browsers’ session restore feature.

If you’re planning on attending MIX10 in March, Paul Scarpa of Spry Hive Industries is hoping to talk about the past, present and future of web browsers. You’ll need to vote, though, to make that happen.

Chrome

An article at Beet.TV claims that Google Chrome has reached 40 million active users worldwide since it’s initial beta release in September of 2008.

Dwight Silverman is using Chrome on Mac, too, and got pretty excited when a bookmark manager showed up in his build.

If you’re a Chrome fan and an Ubuntu fan, you may like some of these Ubuntu themes for Google Chrome.

Chrome’s Dev Channel was updated to version 4.0.288.1 yesterday across all platforms. TechCrunch points out that the key features are those that showed up for the Mac platform: bookmark syncing, the new “pin tab” feature, and most importantly, extensions.

Unlike Yahoo! Answers, Stack Overflow provides a platform at which smart people can provide smart answers, such as this explanation of the difference between the browser process, the render processes and plug-ins in Chrome.

Fennec

Internet Explorer

Microsoft’s announcement that it had submitted a request to join the SVG Working Group sparked commentary from SitePoint and The Industry Standard.

Opera

No it’s not available yet. What you are seeing is the first candidate build of RC1…very very close but not quite there. It doesn’t help Mozilla either to point to direct FTP links instead of the mirrored links (HTTP) that will be published when it is finally released.

You are of course free to install the candidate builds if you’d like, but you won’t be using the actual RC1 build unless things go very smoothly with the build and there isn’t a need for another candidate. That being said, as I pointed out to start this post, the actual RC1 build is expected to be announced on Friday, so you won’t have to wait very long to get the real deal either way.

In addition to needing an editor (”sometimes you a specialist”), Macworld may need to take a look at the latest browser market share figures. They mention Chrome almost in passing while covering what some of the alternative browsers do better than Firefox and Safari.

At a WebKit hackfest recently, some improvements were made to context menu handling, including the ability to hold the CTRL key while right-clicking to see the default context menu instead of any custom context menu provided by the current website. Additionally, some include- and linking-related improvements were made to decrease the overall WebCore build time, which should come as good news to those 80 active WebKit committers.

Avencius has some interesting thoughts on the competition between Mozilla’s Firefox and Google’s Chrome and suggests that, despite their lead in browser market share, the Mozilla folks should be worried.

Chrome

Firefox

An article written nine months ago, The genius behind Google’s browser, goes in-depth with the main programmer behind Google Chrome’s v8 JavaScript engine, Lars Bak. Although the article’s title and certain parts of the story perhaps give a little too much credit to one man (there’s a lot more to Google’s browser than its JavaScript engine), it’s a very interesting read nonetheless. The following is a short excerpt from the article:

Many computer programs are built using previous versions, or related code, but V8 was started from scratch – a blank slate. When I meet [Kasper] Lund later in my Denmark trip, he takes great delight in underscoring this fact: “It’s the purest form of coding there is.” [Lars] Bak clearly agrees – as Lund speaks, he can’t stop smiling.

Beyond detailing the story behind v8’s development in Denmark, the article gives a personal glimpse at its key creator, something his Wikipedia article doesn’t quite achieve.

If you’re interested in the developers behind the browsers or browser-related technology you probably take for granted on a daily basis, I’d definitely give the well-written The genius behind Google’s browser a read.

When I mentioned this Firefox Mobile video in the last issue of Around the Browsersphere, I also mentioned that it was a little lacking in the hands-on details department. Little did I know at the time that testing out Fennec (the codename for the Firefox Mobile browser) was so simple to do.

Fennec, which is currently at version 1.0 alpha 1, or also referred to as M9 (a user experience alpha), can be installed on Windows, Linux and Mac, in addition to its intended target, the Nokia N810 Internet Tablet. To do so, simply grab the zip file or distributable associated with your OS.

I installed Fennec on Windows 7 to check it out, and the simulation works pretty well. You can see how pages are rendered according to the smaller screen size, and you can also get a feel for how close the rendering of the page is to what you see in your normal desktop browser. One of the things that stood out in the aforementioned YouTube video was the fact that all of the controls are hidden off to the sides of the page. You simply “swipe” left or right to access the currently open tabs and navigation/settings, respectively.

The following is a look at Browsersphere loaded up in Fennec:

And here’s a look at ESPN.com loaded with the currently open tabs displayed off to the left:

And finally, here’s a look at the Fennec release notes page with the navigation and settings icons off to the right:

Obviously, you can’t get the best feel for what Fennec will feel like running on its intended hardware by running it on a dekstop OS, but you get a general idea for the layout of the controls, the way the pages render, etc. Overall, I got a good impression from my quick look at Fennec, and it sounds like others have been impressed as well.

If you’re as curious as I was about how Fennec compares to some of the other mobile browsers out there, I’d recommend installing it on your desktop computer and giving it a try for yourself.

I’m all for raising privacy concerns, as long as it is done well and responsibly. However, this morning I stumbled upon a gem of an article that tries to make claims about Google Chrome’s policies that simply aren’t true. The sad thing is, the only research needed to deny the claims made in the article involves launching the browser and going to a URL.

In Chrome is not an Internet Browser and not open, but closed to the Internet’s Domain Name System, Scott Cleland, a self-proclaimed “prescient analyst,” claims that Chrome is “a gateway to Google’s datacenter to browse Google’s mirror copy of the Internet and track the user’s every movement.” However, the two most incredible claims in the article are as follows:

“Google’s Chrome browser effectively eliminates the Internet’s Domain Name System (DNS) address bar where a user can directly go to [a] URL.”

“When one puts a URL, www.brand.com, into Google’s OmniBox search bar they do not go where they asked to go but to Google’s results page where Google can advertise against that brand without sharing the ad revenues with that brand, and where Google can offer competitors an opportunity to divert the user from their requested destination and to a competitor’s destination.”

The claims about Google’s “mirror copy” and bypassing the Internet Domain Name System are discredited point blank in a post from The Chromium Blog titled DNS Prefetching (or Pre-Resolving), which states “Google Chrome resolves domain names…using your computer’s normal DNS resolution mechanism; no connection to Google is used.”

That second bullet point, though, is the most easily discredited. If you launch Chrome and type “www.starbucks.com” into the OmniBox, you are taken to www.starbucks.com. You aren’t taken to a search results page and certainly don’t see any competitors offering their services along the way. If you type only “starbucks” into the OmniBox, that’s a somewhat different story, but the article is making its claim about URLs, which is just flat out wrong.

Perhaps the most concerning fact among all these non-facts is that Scott Cleland is a consultant to Fortune 500 companies and an advisor to Congress! His bio states, “eight different Congressional subcommittees have sought Cleland’s expert testimony.”

He might as well have titled his article “Chrome bypasses the series of tubes.”

One of the things I’ve always been fascinated by is the low-level side of web browser development. I used to look through Mozilla’s source code, take a look at patches that were added to Bugzilla, and try to find anyone on the web who actually did web browser development to get a sense for what it entailed. Back in the day, getting that type of information was very much so a do-it-yourself kind of venture. The closest I really came to getting low-level yet consumable details was when I used to follow David Hyatt’s work several years ago.

Having had those experiences in the past helps me appreciate even more the fact that the Chromium community has been publicly exposing details about the “guts” of Chromium in several tech talks posted over at the Chromium Blog. The tech talks have been archived in video form on YouTube so that anyone interested in the details of Chromium development can find out more about what’s involved.

One video features Darin Fisher, who used to work for Mozilla, talking about The Chromium WebKit API. In another, Pam Greene covers Chromium WebKit Layout Tests. In another, Brett Wilson discusses Painting in Chromium. Last but not least, Eric Seidel, who has worked on both Safari and Chrome, goes in-depth about Rendering in WebKit.

That last video is probably the most interesting to me, simply because it deals with the rendering engine and also unveils a few interesting facts. For instance, WebKit is made up of almost 2 million lines of code and is developed by about 80 active committers, of which about half work for Google.

If you’re interested in how web browsers are tested, how HTML source gets transformed into what you see on a web page, etc., you’d be doing yourself a favor by checking out the Chromium tech talks.

Ironically enough, Browsersphere has been neglecting the browsersphere a little like Microsoft neglected Internet Explorer earlier this decade. After all, my last post was way back in June. However, unlike Microsoft, it isn’t the competition that has jolted this site back to life. On the contrary, sites like Avencius and Twitter accounts like @AltBrowser have actually made me feel a little bit better about the whole ordeal, knowing that at least someone is out there covering the browsersphere in my absence. Truth is, the site went dark out of pure laziness on my part. Well, that and the fact that I’ve been pretty consumed by another project. Nevertheless, I’m back, and after catching up a bit on what’s been going on, my first order of business is to share a little bit about what’s been tweeted in the browsersphere lately. So let’s get to it.

Looks like @ryan45419 is working on his own web browser named iSurfWeb.

Months after launch, the browser had only captured a minuscule percentage of the market. The goal was to beat Microsoft with open source. Netscape couldn’t do it. And, according to [Asa] Dotzler, “we realized Mozilla couldn’t do it, either.”

While Mozilla 1.0 wasn’t a success, what followed certainly was. Two Mozilla contributors, Ben Goodger and Blake Ross, proposed taking things back to basics. The Mozilla source code was stripped down and rewritten once again, and all of the extraneous features were canned.

In late 2004, a faster, slimmer and easier-to-use browser emerged: Mozilla Firefox.

Opera 10 beta, codenamed “Peregrine,” was released today. The high-level features touted on the Opera 10 website are:

“Opera Turbo for fast browsing on slow connections” – this is essentially the same technology used by Opera Mini to compress content, saving bandwidth and time.

“New visual tabs and sleek design” – the new design was previously covered here.

“Speed Dial your way” – users now have the option of customizing the number of websites displayed or the background.

“Web integration” – tell Opera to use your web-based email client or feed reader as the default for email and feeds, respectively, and it will.

“Resizable search field”

“40% faster engine and cutting-edge Web standards support”

While the bulk of those features are notable, it’s pretty obvious that the new visual changes will get the most immediate attention, followed by reviews of the underlying rendering engine, Presto 2.2, once people get some subjective and objective experience with it (does anyone still use a slow connection on their desktop anymore?).

For more on the web standards support added to Presto 2.2, check out Standards support in Opera Presto 2.2 and Opera 10 beta, which among other things, confirms that Opera 10 beta passes the Acid3 test.

To kick the tires on this latest release from Opera, download Opera 10 beta today.
