Bandar Seri Begawan - A group of divorcees, a widow and a family without both parents in the Brunei-Muara District were some of the recipients who received the Ramadhan charity contribution...

Bandar Seri Begawan - A group of divorcees, a widow and a family without both parents in the Brunei-Muara District were some of the recipients who received the Ramadhan charity contribution organised by the Community Development Department under the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports yesterday.

A delegation from the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports led by Hj Mohamad bin Hj Abd Rahman, Director of Finance and Administration in the ministry, went to five houses to present the contribution to the recipients.

Also present were Datin Hajah Shireen binti Hj Mustapha, Senior Special Duties officer with Hj Abdul Malik bin Hj Mohammad, Acting Director of Youth and Sports.

The first house that the delegation visited was Mariah binti Hj Muslim.

The 39-year-old divorcee and mother of four is currently living on the monthly welfare assistance of $240. The divorcee is currently unemployed.

In an interview, she said, "After the divorce, we relied on our relative's assistance especially from my sister and brother.

My children almost had to stop going to school because we didn't have any money to buy the school items and uniform.

This was before we got the assistance from the Community Development Department."

Mariah also expressed her desire to find a job and not be dependent on any assistance.

She said, "I wish to find a job in order to support my family with children aged between three and 14 years. I don't want to solely rely on the assistance from the government."

Officials from the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports responded positively about Mariah's hopes on finding employment and will be looking into the matter.

During the interview, Mariah also thanked the Government of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam for providing the much-needed assistance to the family.

The second house visited by the delegation was Muhammad Aslam bin Muhammad Jefri Deen.

The 22-year-old is currently working and has two brothers. They are living without their parents and are currently receiving assistance through the National Welfare Bodies Fund.

The next two houses that received the contributions were Norlia binti Uda and Nisah binti Hj Kula, both are divorcees.

Norlia stays in Kg Madang and receives a monthly welfare assistance of $200.

She has one child and is currently staying in the house of her late parent.

Meanwhile, Nisah binti Hj Kula who is also staying in Kg Madang receives a monthly welfare assistance of $380.

Unemployed, she has a small business of selling vegetables nearby the house.

The final house visited by the delegation was Norsia Hasnaliza binti Hassem.

The widow is paralysed and is bounded to a wheelchair since 2005 after a serious accident that also took her husband's life.

She stays at the second floor of a rented house in Kg Sungai Akar and has four children aged between six and 14 years.

Fortunately, her relative Shikin Johari is always at Norsia's side to care for her and the children.

They are currently receiving $640 in assistance.

According to her relative Shikin Johari, "The tragic accident happened on August 20, 2005 leaving her paralysed and bound to the wheelchair."

When asked if the family can survive with $640, she said, "It's really hard, because the rent for the house is $500 every month. We only have $160 left to survive."In addition, Dayang Shikin also said, "Staying on the second floor of the house, we have to carry Norsia in and out if she needs to go out to see doctor. This can sometimes be really hard."

Dayang Shikin also conveyed her concern to the delegation from the ministry and they are currently looking into an accommodation.

The officials have vowed to help Norsia and her family.
