Chuck: I’ve seen you many times with the band and that’s always wonderful and we’ve interacted together, you know, with the Stones. Anyway, I want to ask you, before we get to the music, about your philanthropy efforts. You have done some wonderful things. You have your own foundation..

Bryan: Yeah.

Chuck: .. that started what, two years ago, in ’06?

Bryan: Yeah, coming on three years now.

Chuck: And you’ve done – you did Live Aid. You were involved in that.

Bryan: Mm-hmm.

Chuck: You’ve done the Prince’s Trust. I know you have some efforts for breast cancer and so on. Just tell us a little bit about some of those things.

Bryan: Well, you’ve sort of rattled half of it off. But also, one of the first things I ever did, because I come from Vancouver, British Columbia, it was the founding – it was the birthplace of Greenpeace.

Chuck: Mm-hmm, right.

Bryan: And, when I was a teenager, I used to campaign for Greenpeace, because they had a big thing back in the ’70s to save the whales. And over the years, I got to know some of the people there, and one of my dearest friends from there was David McTaggart. Now, the Mother Nature Network might want to check up on this guy. He’s gone now, unfortunately, but he was one of the greatest environmentalists the world ever had.

Chuck: Wow

Bryan: And we became great friends and I did some work for them in the ’80s and made some donations to kick off another campaign for saving the whales. And in the ’90s, McTaggart got a hold of me and we went around the world together to try and stop the Japanese from whaling in the South Pacific.

Chuck: Excellent, excellent

Bryan: Yeah.

Chuck: Another subject. Some people know, but I bet a lot of people don’t know, that you’re an accomplished photographer.

Bryan: That’s very kind.

Chuck: .. and that you have a few books, how many? Tell us here.

Bryan: Well, I’ve done a couple things, you know, for raising money for different things, particularly breast cancer because a friend of mine died from it. So, I did, I went on a crusade to try and help the cancer foundations to raise awareness and money after her passing. And she was sort of my muse.

Chuck: Well, I’m glad to know you’re continuing in that area of the arts as well.

Bryan: Oh, yeah.

Chuck: A little bit about the Bryan Adams Foundation and what you’re trying to accomplish with that.

Bryan: About, whenever it was, I think 2004, when the tsunami hit Thailand, a lot of people were giving money to different already existing organizations. And I decided that I would raise money on my own and try and find individual projects that needed attention.

Chuck: Right.

Bryan: And I found a school in Thailand and I found a recreation center in Sri Lanka, both of them had been wiped out by the tsunami.

Chuck: Tsunami, right.

Bryan: And I decided that I’d raise the money to try and help rebuild them and that’s what happened. And I got this guitar. I got this guitar and I had everybody I could think of and everybody I could find, all my colleagues in the record business and the music business to sign it and we raised £150,000 for it.

Chuck: Hmm, wow, fantastic, £150,000?
Bryan: £150,000 and that started and half of it went to building the school and half of it went to building this recreation center.

Bryan Adams in a short interview with The Miami Herald.

MH: How’s the tour going so far?

BA: Great! I’ve titled it the Bare Bones Tour, and it’s been going on for a little over a year, acoustically, just myself solo. I really haven’t gone off tour, ever. I tour a week a month and have been doing it like that for 10 years now.

MH: What can we expect from your Miami show?

BA: I’m doing jazz versions of the whole thing. I’m just kidding you — of course it’s gonna be the hits, plus a little bit from the new album [11]. But basically a retrospective of 30 years of my music. It’s very singer/songwriter, just me and my guitar.

MH: You quit school when you were 15 to sing in a band [``Big mistake,'' Adams blurts out]. Be your own critic: How good were you then?

BA: I was an infant. I was just full of p— and vinegar and wasn’t afraid, just go for it and have fun. So a lot of it was just laughing.

MH: Do you have one shining-moment career highlight?

BA: I guess it was the moment when I could pay my rent from making music. I thought that was the best thing that could ever possibly happen.

Bryan Adams will play at a fundraising concert at the Royal Albert Hall in aid of threatened wildlife.

The Born Free Foundation announced that the rock star will join the line-up of its Wild and Live concert on November 14, at the gig’s launch event on Wednesday.

Bryan, a long-time supporter of Born Free, sent a message of encouragement from Los Angeles, calling on the public to back the event.

He said: “Wild and Live is a concert to help Born Free to save 25,000 animals.

“I’ll be there to lend my support - hope you will too.”

Dozens of stars have already signed up to support the event including Mutya Buena, Rolf Harris, Kiki Dee, Martin Clunes, Sharon Osbourne and Joanna Lumley.

Speaking at the launch event, Born Free founder, actress and conservationist Virginia McKenna, said: “I am overwhelmed that there are so many talented performers willing to stand up and be counted for animals in need.

“It’s a desperate situation for so many animals and we have to do something about it.

“Wild and Live gives us the chance to really make a difference and save endangered species.

“If you care about wildlife and love great entertainment then I urge you to join us!”

Wild and Live will take place at the Royal Albert Hall on Saturday, November 14 at 7:30pm and has been organised to mark the 25th anniversary of the wildlife charity.

The charity said funds from the concert will help it save the lives of more than 25,000 animals in the wild and alleviate the suffering of animals in captivity, including many threatened and endangered species.

The Born Free Foundation is an international wildlife charity, devoted to compassionate conservation and animal welfare. It takes action worldwide to protect threatened species and stop individual animal suffering. Born Free believes wildlife belongs in the wild and works to phase out zoos and rescue animals that are kept in tiny cages.

Bryan Adams in concert at the National Arts Center in Ottawa

Well, they should have seen how warm, chatty and open he was during an unplugged performance at the National Arts Centre last night. There was no sign of snobbery as Adams, in jeans, boots and a button-up shirt, settled onto a stool on stage, acoustic guitar in hand.

He broke the ice with one of his best songs, Run To You, and forged an instant connection with the crowd by deconstructing a section of the song. As he plucked the motif, everyone in the sold-out audience echoed it with handclaps.

“I’ve played this venue a couple of times,” he said in greeting, recalling that he and his band members were dressed in white the last time, about nine years ago. For this visit, he was joined by a solitary accompanist: pianist Gary Breit.

“Tonight I have a whole lot of other songs to play,” he added. “I’ll try to condense 30 years in two hours. I don’t know if you got the memo or not, but this is an acoustic show, and this is the band.” He gestured to include himself and Breit.

At press time, among the songs they had performed were Here I Am, which Adams sung partly in French (to the delight of the fans), Thought I’d Died and Gone To Heaven, Let’s Make a Night to Remember, I Thought I’d Seen Everything, Summer of 69 and When You Love Someone.

Adams’s voice sounded fantastic, a touch less gritty and more warmly musical than expected, even when he pushed to the high notes. Breit’s playing on the grand piano filled out the songs nicely, elevating them beyond campfire fare.

Between songs, Adams talked about his songwriting and shared at least a couple of secrets, including the tidbit that he would have liked to have had lunch with actress Sandra Bullock when his song was used in one of her movies.

One big surprise was a rare appearance by Adams’ former songwriting partner, Jim Vallance, who took a turn at the piano for a nice rendition of The Best is Yet To Come, one of dozens of hits they wrote together in the 1980s.

“We’ve only done that twice, and that was the second time,” Adams said.

The stars hit the water during Cowes Week earlier this week, as celebrities competed in the annual Artemis Challenge, an event that saw a 50 mile high speed sprint around the Isle of Wight, with the winning skipper taking away £10,000 for their chosen charity.

Leading the pack of well-known faces was Bryan Adams, who was competing for the Bryan Adams Foundation, a charity he set up in 2006 to improve the quality of people’s lives around the world. Also in the race were Zara Phillips – daughter of Princess Anne, Princess Royal – as well as rugby stars Mike Tindall and Will Greenwood, and James and Oliver Phelps, aka the Weasley Twins from the Harry Potter films.

Unfortunately, lack of wind meant the race was abandoned after 7 hours, with final placings seeing Bryan Adams’ boat ranked third.

“It was a brilliant day sailing on Artemis,“ said Adams. “The sun was out, we had some wind for a bit and we sailed a great race. We were even leading when the race was abandoned so I am claiming it as a moral victory.”

The race winner was declared as BT, with the £10,000 prize money going to the Ellen MacArthur Trust, a charity that inspires young people’s cancer recovery through sailing.

Adams will race on “Artemis The Profit Hunter”, skippered by Simon Clay. If they win, the money will go to the Bryan Adams Foundation, a charity set up by Adams in 2006 to improve the quality of people’s lives around the world. The Foundation aims to achieve this by providing financial help and support to those people who are committed to bettering the lives of other people, by providing grants to finance specific projects.

The Foundation seeks to protect the most vulnerable or disadvantaged individuals in society. It aims particularly to advance education and learning opportunities for children and young people worldwide, believing that an education is the best gift that a child can be given. The Foundation’s area of support is broad and far-reaching, enabling grants to be given for projects supporting the elderly, victims of war and natural disasters, and those suffering from mental or physical illness.

“To be on stage singing with someone I’ve looked up to musically my entire life is hard to describe. I keep thinking, did this really happen?” Aldean said in a press release about the show. “He has so many great songs, and it was truly hard to narrow them down to what we did for the show. I hope I did them justice.”
