Though this is a fairly young program (began in 2005), I have only now found out about it.

The program is based around giving children in underprivileged countries the opportunity to learn through the use of prototype laptop computers, called the XO-1. These computers, though being made and marketed to children, are actually incredibly powerful. They provide low-power usage, sunlight readability, and easy internet connectivity.

Upon hearing about these laptops, I began to think of a new project for myself. With only my guitar and an XO-1 laptop, I would travel the country, whether by foot, by train, or by hitchhiking. I would play music for my money, use the laptop to document my journey, and in the process of it all, write music for my new CD. But above all, I could see the country and really find myself.

The prerequisite pricing for this project is probably lower than any other I've tried recently. Unfortunately, the OLPC website is no longer providing the "Give One, Get One" program, which enabled you to purchase two laptops, receiving one for yourself, and sending one to a child in any given country. The only ones available are online, specifically on eBay.

I've found an auction that is selling two laptops for $300 (not including shipping), both of which I would receive. This would enable me to (a) sell the other for profits to begin my journey, or (b) take someone along with me on my journey.

Depending on who would be willing and/or able to go, Kaitlyn would obviously be given the first opportunity, followed by my brother, Zach, with whom I would want to share the experience, then my father, who could use the photographic opportunity, and my dorm neighbor, Matt, whom I feel would enjoy the adventure and would be able to provide musical assistance. No offense to anyone else, but they are the ones who I feel would benefit most from this.

My journey cannot necessarily begin immediately. First and foremost, I want and need to finish this semester, at least, before I can even begin any larger plans. Who knows, by the time I begin really preparing for my journey, the "Give One, Get One" service may be active again.

I am not asking for anything this time, I'm simply stating my project. I know that my past few project ideas have been rather wild (I still want to be a superhero, by the way), but I feel very strongly about this one.

Hopes and prayers are needed more than anything right now. Wish me luck.

Sincerely,
B. Tyler Margison!

btyler is writing songs about you and for you!

This idea comes mostly from Say Anything lead singer, Max Bemis, who did this same thing earlier last year.

I decided to use this same concept to assist in funding my [hopeful] trip to New York to attend the 789 YouTube Gathering during the week of July 8th, 2009, since I am experiencing some incredible difficulties in getting a real job.

Here's the gist.

• Every song will be full-length and personalized for he or she who purchases the song.

• Songs will be $30 USD each. PayPal will be used for transactions.

• When you buy a song, there is a text box above the "Buy Now" button where you insert your e-mail address.

• Soon after payment has gone through, I will send an e-mail from btylermargison [at] gmail [dot] com to the e-mail address given to get information.

• After you receive your e-mail, you reply with 2-3 paragraphs describing a situation in your life or a general issue about which you think should have a song written.

• In around 1-3 weeks, you should receive an e-mail with your personalized song inside, as well as lyrics and a title. If there are any errors or the process is taking an abnormally long time, I will send a message to ensure that I am still working on it.

• All lyrics and music will be written by me (btyler, B. Tyler Margison), and will be self-recorded.

• All music will be acoustic, played on acoustic guitar, with varying styles and tempos, and sung by me (btyler, B. Tyler Margison).

• Under most circumstances, no song will go unwritten. Above all, I want to please the customers and fans.

• This song will be written from me to you, and I will not be releasing it to anyone else. This is YOUR song, and you don't have to share it with anyone else (unless you want to, of course).

Here are a few items to include when responding to the initial e-mail:

• Name
• Age
• Gender
• Location
• Favorite bands
• Style of your personalized song (serious, comedic, parody, etc.)
• Maximum profanity level ("G", "PG", "PG-13", "R", or if you want more fun in it, "Wall-E", "The Simpsons", "Yes Man!", "Scarface")

And, of course, what you want your song to be about. This can be a song referencing a specific situation in your life (include deep details), it can be a song just about you (wherein, I would need information about you), or it can be about an issue that you have strong beliefs in (political, economical, comical, etc.).

Remember, this song is yours, personalized just for you, and no one else. Under no circumstances will it be released to the public for commercial purposes.

One thing I'd like to include is that, whether you want a song or not, pass this song along. I mean, really pass it along. Make this a forward e-mail, and send it out. Because even if you don't want this at all, maybe someone else will. Go on Facebook or MySpace and post the link as many times and as often as possible.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Let's make this viral.

Now, if you're interested, feel free to insert your e-mail address below and press the "buy now" button to begin the process.

Again, I greatly appreciate all help and all customers that come through. And I hope to see a lot of other YouTubers at the 789 YouTube Gathering in a few weeks.

email address to contact

NOTE: The current cost of a personalized song ($30) is temporary. Well, I really want a Playstation 3, so I should probably keep the supporters to a minimum so I have more of a chance, but I'm really excited to get Corey to win.

Voting ends on January 7th, 2009 at 9 p.m., and you can vote once every 24 hours. So please vote by going to www.pcavote.com and voting as much and as often as possible. Even if you don't like him, help get the YouTube community out there. When I'm feeling as sick as I am now, I can't sleep. It's not a normal whatever kind of cold or whatever, just bleh. I can usually sleep with that, because a bottle of Nyquil and two gallons of Coke is a combination from God.

The issue is that I get nauseated, and I can't sleep. My stomach is dancing around like Dane Cook on stage, and is just as obnoxious and annoying. So when I'm feeling this sick, we don't have anything in the house to combat it, so what do I do? I stay up, listening to stand-up comedy and playing NBA 2k8 on my PS2 until it goes away. If it doesn't go away, well, I'm screwed.

Regardless, sometimes, I manage to come up with ideas, though useless and irrelevant to anything that has ever existed.

For example, (trust me, you'll hate the following description) I was playing NBA, and I have a created player who has perfect scores in every single category (mid-range shooting, dunking, blocking, etc.). Well, I play on the hardest difficulty, and though I have this one perfect player, and a semi-stacked team, I still managed to lose games. And since I'm trying to get started in sports journalism, somewhat, and covering basketball games for my local newspaper (my dad's current job, but someone needs to cover the away games), I thought it would be interesting, at least slightly, to write sports articles about the games I play on my system.

Another example, what would happen is, I play a game and write things down as they happen, such as game-changing moments, etc. Then, afterwards, I write a however-many-word article about the game, the highlights and lowlights, being sure to talk about all the different blahbittybloo that happens in the game, whatever.

It may seem like a lame idea to you, and why I'm sharing it, I don't even know, but if I'm trying to at least pump up my writing ability, and get some experience, what better than a no-credentials-needed video game, played by me, where I can make up moments that happened in the game, et cetera and so forth.

I personally think this idea is just off the charts as far as my capacity goes for ideas. It's better than sitting around and playing Dragon Ball Z on my Playstation like a nine-year-old who still believes that Chewbacca's real, and the moon is made of cheese.

For another update on my life, I put in an application for Starbucks earlier today [12/9/08], which is probably the most-likely place I'll work. And I couldn't be happier if I got a job there. It's the perfect job for me, surrounded by unnaturally happy people and all the caffeinated beverages I could guzzle from a beer bong. A friend of mine told me about her experiences working there, saying that it's hard labor, but unbelievably worth it.

But looking at it that way, I worked at the worst McDonald's on the planet for two and a half years. And this isn't just an exaggeration. Have you seen the movie, "Waiting"? We were the McDonald's of Waiting. Or Waiting of McDonald's... something like that. But we were horrible. We didn't care. We couldn't give two damns and a side of bacon for what went on.

All we did was just gossip and fail at life, and after a while, I broke from the monotony, looked myself in the mirror after slashing my wrists with a grease-covered spatula, and said, "Listen, you've got to set yourself apart from these people. You have to be the best damn employee anyone's ever seen at such a horrible McDonald's." And I did. For a few months. And after those few months, I had taken a lot of time off to go to the 888 YouTube Gathering in Canada, and I had to send my girlfriend off to college, and everything just became a spinning mess of "I want to get the hell out of here".

So I quit. And I've gone on a tangent about all this, but the point is, I've worked hard before. I've worked my ass off for a bunch of people who had nothing better to do than judge other people based on useless crap, whether or not they'd been working perfectly for twelve straight hours without a break or breather. I think that, at worst, I'll be able to work my way through Starbucks to get money for Christmas. I can then transfer to Terre Haute next semester when I leave for Indiana State University, and if it's not better then, I will have learned my lesson, and will begin seeking out jobs before quitting.

Here's my final point. Life's about learning. Whether we learn from our mistakes, or learn from staying up late because our tummy-tums won't stop having burning feelings, we do learn. And I have a lot to learn right now. I have to learn patience, I have to learn to stop procrastinating, I have to learn how to handle jobs, I have to learn how to write articles, I have to learn how to handle life in general.

I'll leave you with a quote that is very possibly irrelevant to this subject, and this whole blog. But when I was filling out my Starbucks application, there was a question that asked, as I paraphrase, "What's a specific moment in which you have given excellent customer service? Why did this matter?" My reply was that I had very often been the person picked at McDonald's to be in the drive-thru, because I was very kind to everyone who came through. I gave them respect, and was as thoughtful as I would hope someone would be to me." And at the end, I put this:

"Positive attitude is received, only when first given."

Think about that for a while, if you will.

Please comment on your feelings about this blog, or just to tell me to f***off and that I'm a lamer, whatever. And if you could, I ask that you pray, wish, send positive vibes, whatever your faith, religion, or creed tells you, all in hopes that I get this Starbucks job. I'm resting a lot of my own faith on this, because it's really my last resort before I resort to prostitution, even though Kaitlyn said I'm not allowed. Mommy and Daddy probably wouldn't be too happy either. Nor God, Jesus, the Holy Ghost, etc.

If you read all this, I appreciate it, and I hope that you all have a nice restoftheweek.

/btyler

YOU get to choose my next video!

After the creation of my Sickness video, the ideas for vlogs started rolling in off the top of my head, which is usually a good thing. The issue is, I don't know in which order to film and release them. So I'm leaving that up to you.

Undoubtedly, I have to say, my next video is going to be the much-belated Black Friday video that is obviously a little late. There have had to be revisions and editing to film, script, etc. But I am sure that my next video will be my Black Friday video, and you will be choosing the video after that.

So, here are your options. I ask that you pick your favorite, and post it in a comment below. Keep in mind that all of these videos will be made eventually. I just don't know which one I want to begin with. That's your job.

a] "All I Want for Christmas..." - A sort of tongue-in-cheek video about what I want from society for Christmas. An example: "For Christmas this year, I want all underage drinkers to be thrown into jail", or "A wish I have for Christmas this year is for people to understand that Jesus was around before Santa was", etc. It's basically just like my "Sickness" video, except with a basis around Christmastime.

b] "Never Fear" - A video explaining some of the things I fear, why, and stories. Pretty basic to understand.

c] "The Best of 'The B.eaT. Live!' on BlogTV" - A montage of somewhat-funny moments from any time I've been on BlogTV. One of those things that everyone should see.

It's a video called "London: Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger". I found it on Vimeo, and it's amazing because none of this is video. What you're seeing is a stream of pictures. This is one of the most amazing montages I've ever seen in my life, so I strongly suggest taking a look at it.

London (harder, better, faster, stronger) from David Hubert on Vimeo.

Enjoy!

/btyler

New Short Film by itsBrent

Tonight, my good friend, itsBrent, (Given name, Brent Coble), released his new short film, "Night of the Loving Dead", produced by Cutting Room Productions. It is the greatest movie of 2008, the greatest Batman movie ever, and very possibly... and I say this carefully... the greatest superhero movie of all time.

The only thing was that I was more focused on The Joker the whole time. Heath Ledger delivered a spellbinding performance, much deserving of any award he's nominated for. I don't think any other actor could have done The Joker justice in the way that Ledger did, with the mild exception of Johnny Depp.

So yes, after leaving the theatre, I found myself wanting more and more to see it again, so I'll probably travel up to Indianapolis sometime this week [since I'm off for the county fair], and go see it in IMAX. I've heard that it's fantastic there, so I really want to check it out. Maybe on Monday, because I want to take Josh and Krystle with me, and that's the day they're off... I don't know, I'll have more information later.

Why so serious?

[/btyler]

The Red Ring of Death

If anyone owns an XBox 360, then they know the dangers and constant fear of what is called the Red Ring of Death. The RRoD is a demon so powerful, it destroys all your hopes and dreams of conquering the next level on Army of Two, or winning the Playoffs in NBA 2k8. The RRoD is a relentless beast that eats away your console, and ends all promise of starting up your system.

I recently encountered the RRoD when I tried loading NBA 2k8, and it glitched at start up. So I made sure it was elevated correctly [it was], and that the air vents were clear [they were], and that it was stable [again, complete]. I restarted the console, and when it restarted, there it was. The Red Ring of Death. Staring me blank in the face, blinking like it owned the world.

The RRoD, quite literally, is a red glowing circle around the start-up button of the XBox 360. Usually, it is green, and allows gaming possible. But when it glows that crimson color, it's game over.

So there it was. A friend of mine recently encountered this catastrophe, and had to pay $125 in order to exchange for a working console, until his was fixed. The problems with this method are that [1] this XBox actually belongs to my friend, and I'm simply borrowing it for now, and [2] I don't have the $125 to pay for this fix.

I checked a few web sites, and videos on YouTube, and they all said either turn it in, or perform actions that could potentially burn my house down. No thank you. I have too much stuff in there, and my parents would inevitably kill me.

So if you have any definite working fixes, let me know. As long as they don't cost me over twenty bucks, and I can be able to give it back to my friend, and at least say that I had no idea it existed.

Unless, of course, he checks my website. Then I'm screwed.

[/btyler]

Just wanted to fume...

Okay, so I just wanted to vent about something.

Now I know there are people out there who don't like me, especially on the internet. But I seem to have a few enemies here in Brown County, too. That doesn't really bother me, not everyone's going to like me. But it kind of pisses me off when people stand down my hill, my back yard, and throw rocks at my house when they see me come outside.

How do I know it's not a branch falling or something coming off of a tree? Well, it happens too often per night to be an accident. Especially just now, because I actually heard the thrown object soar through the trees down the hill, and land heavily on my roof. I mean, seriously, this thing was heavy, and being able to hear its trajectory was what made me absolutely sure of this.

It's just ridiculous that you would risk me calling the cops on you, just for the five-minute humor of throwing something at my house. Are you kidding me? Are you that pathetic? Grow a brain.

Sorry to kind of push this on you, all at once. Just had to fume to someone, since my fuming people aren't available at this time.

And of course, I just heard something else. Maybe I'll just go inside.

[/btyler]

Presenting daveypoptart

So if you've ever seen my Buffalo Wild Wings video, you will have met my friend David.

Who is gay. Disabled. Access. Denied.

So I haven't been posting regularly because I've been extremely busy with work, and with the creation of YouTube accounts for my friends, David [daveypoptart] and Kathy [katscan7]. They both seem rather interested in making videos and so I've been trying to get things together for them so they can do so. I've also been working on getting my brother started with his videos [Rabid Bunny Studios].

In addition to this, I was afraid to post, or even access my own website because, as some may know, my Google AdSense account was disabled. I didn't want to mess with any statistics, but after I got the appeal form filled out, I figured it would be fine. Apparently, a "friend" of mine was trying to "help me out" by using a program to refresh my website and click it automatically, to increase my payout.

Well I didn't know this was going on until my account was disabled, and once it happened, I asked him about his suspicious behavior concerning "how many people were checking out my website" and his unusual interest in my videos, and he admitted to it. I knew that this sort of thing was against the rules, and had I known that he was doing it, I would have punched him directly in the throat and asked him, "What the hell were you thinking?!".

...Needless to say, I'm kind of angry at him right now.

But anyway, that's what's up. I really don't know how many people actually view this website now, because HE has been screwing with my statistics. So if there is anyoen out there paying attention, feel free to speak up. I don't expect much.

So I'm in Tennessee right now for the second family reunion in the past month. Not too bad, I'm getting used to it, so it's cool. I'm having a good time so far, if people would just stop freakin out. Specifically my little cousin, Bryton. He's the cutest little thing, but he is just.. rawr.

Dah. I'm going to get back to making videos. Ahoy.

[/btyler]

Contribute to The BayThirteen Project.

The BayThirteen Project is hosted by B. Tyler Margison, Jude Faulkes, and Keith Rhodes.

The BayThirteen Project is an experiment in the study of viral marketing. Viral marketing is a marketing strategy that encourages people to pass along messages, videos, or other information to others in order to generate added exposure. The videos on YouTube that your friends tell you to watch rely on viral marketing in order to get more views. You tell your friends, they tell more of theirs, et cetera, until the video is one of the most viewed.

B13 is an experiment to see how much money can be earned from viral marketing, or rather, how many people can or will donate. Are you more or less likely to donate money to a cause when it's unknown? when it's well-known? Will you pass on this experiment until all of your friends have done it, then finally give in to the pressure? Or will you be the trendsetter, telling your friends that they should do the same, and that doing so is cool?

There is no set donation limit or minimum requirement. If you want to donate a penny, do so. If you want to donate one, five, twenty, seventy-three, or two-hundred fifteen dollars, do so. There is no obligation to contribute, only a request.

The more people this reaches out to, the better. Tell your friends, your parents, your church, your school, and have them spread the word, too.

This project will end on December 31, 2008. Half of the money donated will be given to the decided choice charity of Margison, Faulkes, and Rhodes. If you have any suggestions as to the charity, feel free to give ideas.

Money is calculated through ChipIn. You must have a PayPal account to contribute.

For more information, visit The BayThirteen Project @ ChipIn.com, or btylermargison.com.

Thank you for your consideration.
B. It sounded pretty cool, and we figured there was nothing really better to do between the hours of six and midnight, so that was our choice.

"With the eleventh pick in the two-thousand-and-eight NBA Draft, the Indiana Pacers select... Jerryd Bayless."

Crowd goes wild. Bayless was a projected fifth- or sixth-pick, and managed to drop as low as eleventh, and the Pacers caught him. The crowd at Conseco was ecstatic. We didn't really need a point guard, after the magnificent trade with Toronto to receive T.J. Ford. But now, we had a Monta Ellis-esque off-the-bench combo guard that could probably make me REALLY happy as a fan.

Here's an example as to why:

So what do I do? I leave my seat to plug in my laptop to announce the awesome news. I didn't have any battery power, and there was some good WiFi, so I thought I'd work on it. Well, I'm sitting down, and Chris comes stomping up to me and says the words...

"We traded Bayless."

I was hoping we traded up. Get rid of Bayless and Tinsley, and hell, maybe even Dunleavey, and get Eric Gordon, or something decent.

We traded him to the Portland Trailblazers for Brandon Rush, Jarrett Jack and Josh McRoberts. I'll repeat myself. We traded a guaranteed future superstar and a decent power forward [Ike Diogu] for players we don't need.

Thanks, Larry.

So there you go. We also managed to get [GASP] Roy freakin' Hibbert from Toronto's pick. I sigh at this. I can't believe we have such outstanding management, that not only have the continued to screw us, but they plan on doing so for a very long time. What did we do to Larry Bird to have him hate us so? Fans come to games. The team tries to win them.

This is pointless. I apologize to the non-basketball fans out there for this extremely biased blog entry. But if you can explain to me as to how we can get so screwed, then maybe I'll change my mind.

Oh, and by the way, I am pretty sure I have the greatest girlfriend, evah:

[bt]: We drafted an AWESOME PLAYER. And traded him away for [nothing].
Kaitlyn Kritzer: who would that be?
Kaitlyn Kritzer: is that jarryd?
[bt]: Jerryd Bayless. He was projected at, like, 6, and we got him at 11.
[bt]: YEH.
[bt]: And we traded him for [worthlessness].
Kaitlyn Kritzer: but arent you excited to see the Rush brothers play together?
[bt]: Hahaha. Sure, I guess. If we keep Kareem.
[bt]: I didn't know you were that... interested.
Kaitlyn Kritzer: ahaha...

AHHHHH! That's amazing. I'd have video up from the party, but I'm sure it's copyright infringement, and I don't want that right now.

AGH. I'm moving to the Congo, so I can watch Serge Ibaka play. Or to Portland, who has an incredible team now. Greg Oden and LaMarcus Aldridge in the post, Brandon Roy at shooting guard, Jerryd Bayless starting at the point, and the only not-completely-awesome player is Travis Outlaw playing small forward, and even he's really good.

They are definitely a dynasty in the making. Or rather, in the made. I don't know how it could get more perfect for them. Unless the Pacers decide to trade the rest of their depth to them.

This can't get more ridiculous. I'm going to go ahead to sleep. I'll probably post about my band's practice session tomorrow. I'm too sick and tired and worn out to go any further.

Night, kids. Hope your teams did well in the draft.

[/btyler]

Finally got my new camera...

So today, I got my new Flip Video Ultra Series camera in the mail. It's kind of teh awesome. The only disappointment I've noticed is that I expected the tripod to be bigger than... say, a Sharpie. But lo and behold! it's actually decently small. Probably four to five inches, at the most [which is what she said].

I'm really impressed with it though. The direct upload to YouTube downgrades the video quality, which just means I won't be doing that unless I can figure out how to get it to upload at maximum. Oh well, it still works just like I need it to, if not better.

Here's the first video I made with it today. I've already shot plenty of footage, just messing around, and my gay friend, David, after seeing this, has decided that he wants me to hook him up with a YouTube show. So I'll probably set everything up for him, and be his director, producer, and everything but the star. I'll cut the footage, edit it, and upload it, whatever. He's pretty psyched, and I'm happy to be helping someone out.

It'll be like "Fueled By Ramen", except YouTube stars! WOO!

Anyway, here's a video from today. No intro, no outro, but decently fun.

Enjoy!

[/btyler]
