Expanded Vaccination of Patients for Influenza and Pneumococcal Disease

Expanded Vaccination of Patients for Influenza and Pneumococcal Disease

Effective January 1, 2012, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) are requiring hospitals to expand the pneumococcal and influenza vaccinations of in-patients. The reasoning behind this is that hospitals may miss the opportunity to vaccinate patients who are at higher risk of acquiring pneumococcal disease or at risk of acquiring influenza. Listed below will be the expanded group of patients who will be offered these vaccinations.

Influenza Vaccine – This vaccine will now be offered to all patients admitted who are 6 months or older.
Pneumococcal Vaccine – This vaccine will be offered to all patients 65 years and older (who have not had the pneumococcal vaccine since their 65th birthday) and patients between the ages of 6 and 64 if they have the following medical conditions: Diabetes, Nephritic Syndrome, End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD), Congestive Heart Failure (CHF), Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), Spleen removed or not functioning, HIV, or Asthma.

Doylestown Hospital understands the importance of sharing patient medical information between facilities. Frequently, patients in long term care receive the vaccines listed above but this information is not shared between them and the hospitals and visa versa. Doylestown Hospital has developed a continuum of care report which includes a summary of the patient’s medical information while in the hospital. As part of that report, vaccine information will be provided. Below is screen shot of how the information looks:

The hospital is asking all long term care facilities that send residents to Doylestown Hospital to please share your patient’s vaccine history with us. This information will prevent us from giving the patient an unneeded vaccine as well as save on health care costs.
