]]>Many international students who move to Australia wish to stay back to work and live after they have completed their degrees due to the high standards of living in the country, as well as the chance to further their careers. This article seeks to provide information on how to secure a Permanent Residence (PR) after completing your studies in Australia.
A permanent resident refers to a person who moved to Australia and has not yet been granted their citizenship. They key factors of a permanent residency are:
A large number of international students in Australia aspire to get permanent residency after they have completed their course of study. To do this, you must apply for a visa through the SkillSelect program, which is managed by the Department of Immigration and Border Protection. It is an online portal which allows potential applicants to submit their considerations for a skilled visa through something called an EOI or Expression of Interest. The conditions to apply for an EOI are:
This portal allows applications for multiple visas as all applications for permanent or provisional visas go through the SkillSelect system. Every fortnight, the Department of Immigration sends out invites to the highest ranked applicants through an automated system. To receive an invitation you must pass the skilled migration points test. For more information on the points test and how scores are calculated for each separate visa class, visit the offical website.
Note: The first step to sending in your EOI is to nominate an occupation on the Skilled Occupation List. If your occupation is not on the SOL, you will need to secure a sponsorship by either a state government or an employer. Also, before you can send in your EOI, you will have to complete the skills assessment and English language testing as well.
The Skilled Independent Visa (subclass 189) is a visa for applicants who have not been sponsored by an employer, a state/territory or a family member who is a permanent resident or citizen of Australia. It costs approximately AUD 4,045. This visa will allow you to live and work permanently anywhere in Australia and also has provisions for you to include your family members in the application process. The application process for this visa requires you to secure a positive skills assessment before you send in your EOI through the SkillSelect portal. After you have received an invitation to apply from the Department of Home Affairs, you will have to submit your final, completed application for approval which will grant you your visa. To apply for this visa, you must pass the following requirements:
Note: If your application is successful and you receive the visa, you will be allowed 5 years to live and work in Australia with multiple entry granted on your travels outside the country. If you live for 4 consecutive years in Australia under this visa, you are eligible to apply for citizenship. You can also live in Australia for 2 of the 5 years and still get your visa renewed for a further 5 years.
The Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186) is a visa that allows Australian employers to sponsor international workers by providing them job opportunities and the chance to live and work permanently in Australia. The key features of this visa are that it allows the holder to work and stay in Australia indefinitely as a permanent resident, access to MediCare, travel outside Australia with multiple return entries over a period of 5 years and sponsor eligible relatives for a variety of Australian visas. The Employer Nomination Scheme has 3 streams through which potential applicants are filtered, however for this article we will be taking a look at the most relevant stream for international students which is the Direct Entry stream.

The following are some of the ways you can boost your scores in the test:

]]>Some of the reasons why students would consider not taking the IELTS exam are:
As such, many students do not wish to take the IELTS exam as they feel it would hinder their chances of scoring admission into a Canadian university. The following article seeks to provide students with the information they need to apply to study in Canada without IELTS scores.
There are certain exceptions to the rule when it comes to IELTS requirements for admission. The following list contains all exemptions and options available to students who do not wish to take the IELTS test:
If you meet any one or multiple of the above criteria, you will be eligible to study in Canada without IELTS, provided your chosen Canadian university is flexible to do so.
In addition to the IELTS exam, many Canadian institutes of higher education also accept test results from any of the following English proficiency tests –
NOTE: Exemptions are determined by each school individually, so make sure you check the requirements on the official websites of the institutes before applying.
Universities in Canada have different admission requirements and there is no singular standard for admission that is followed by all. The following is a list of some of the universities that will allow you to apply for a course without the requirement for IELTS scores:
1. University of Winnipeg: IELTS certification credentials are not necessary for the University of Winnipeg. However, proof of proficiency in the English language is a mandatory requirement. They offer their own proprietary ELP or English Language Program, which you can attend prior to applying to or starting your course. You can find the full details of the language program exemptions and requirements on the official manual of the University of Winnipeg. This will allow you to skip the IELTS requirements during the process of application.
2. Brock University: IELTS will help you get an admission into this institute but it is not a compulsion. Brock University accepts TOEFL scores (88 iBT with a minimum of 21 on Speaking and Writing 237 CBT (TSE 4.5) 580 PBT (TWE 4.5) and they also offer the Brock Intensive English Language Program, specifically designed to help international students increase their proficiency in the English language. If you have finished an International Baccalaureate diploma or its equivalent with English as the medium of instruction you are eligible to apply for admission into any of the UG and PG courses they offer.
3. University of Saskatchewan: The University of Saskatchewan is home to a growing number of international students. They accept TOEFL (Overall score of 86 with minimum scores of 19 in each area) as an alternative to the IELTS exam.
They also allow candidates to take the CanTEST, which is the Canadian Test of English for Scholars and Trainees, and if you wish, you can also attend the universitys own English Language Training program. CanTEST is similar to IELTS in that it tests the 4 sub-skills (Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking), is not a computerized test, does have a face to face speaking exam. In this sense, it is much different from TOEFL or CELPIP. Notably different from IELTS, however, is that the listening section is longer, while the writing section is shorter.
4. Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador: The Memorial University has maintained a reputation for offering courses in engineering, business and medicine, which makes it an attractive destination for international students.
The university offers students alternatives to IELTS scores like:
5. Cambrian College: This institute focuses on research and prides itself on providing excellent post-degree employment opportunities to the students. According to information listed on their website, international students are assessed on their English language proficiency which will include reading, writing and speaking skills once they arrive in the university.
Given below is a list of some other universities which have unique requirements for international students that do not involve taking the IELTS exam:
NOTE: Please visit the websites of the relevant universities to ensure that you meet all the English language requirements and all the other necessary conditions to get enrolment in your chosen institute.

]]>France and Germany are both members of the EU as well, an organization that comprises 27 member countries, and was founded to ease the passage of people, goods and information between these nations. This also means that students looking to settle down in these countries after their studies have options available to them that they wont find anywhere else in the world. This article seeks to provide information regarding the EU Blue Card and other permanent residency options for students looking to stay back in France and Germany after completing their studies.
An EU Blue Card functions as a residence permit for qualified candidates from non-EU countries to enter and remain in the EU country of their choice to seek employment. The permit will allow you to enter, re-enter and stay in the country that issued your card for as long as it is valid. EU Blue Card holders are treated the same way as citizens of the country where they have settled but they can only look for employment in their chosen fields. The EU Blue Card is one of the primary avenues towards gaining permanent residence in the EU for foreign graduates. The following countries issue EU Blue Cards:
The EU Blue Card is highly sought after due to the benefits it provides like long-term validity, freedom of movement within the EU, opportunity to bring your family over and a gateway to eventual permanent residence in the issuing country. This is why many international students aim to qualify for the EU Blue Card after they graduate. However, students should be wary as employers often ask for proof of work experience along with relevant university qualifications. Read Study in Germany after 12
International students cannot apply for an EU Blue Card if they are still under the duration of their student visa. But, if you find a job during your studies that fulfils the eligibility criteria for the EU Blue Card, you can submit your application as soon as you finish your degree. If you dont find a job during your studies, you can still apply for a residence permit that will allow you to stay back in the country for 12-18 months (depending on your host countrys rules and regulations) that will let you find a job. The eligibility criteria for EU Blue Card for students are:
You have to submit the application for the card from within the EU state you want to work in. Depending on your location, you will have to go to the relevant authority to start the process. For example, if you are applying for a card from Germany, you will have to submit your application at the Foreigners Registration Office or Auslnderbehrde. Read Study in France in English
The following are some of the benefits of the EU Blue Card:
The EU long-term residence permit allows permanent residence to foreign nationals who have lived in an EU country for more than 5 years. An EU residence permit is valid until further notice. In other words, its period of validity is not limited. To apply for an EU residence permit as a foreign national, you must meet the following eligibility criteria:
You need to apply for a long-term EU residence permit at the immigration offices of the country you are residing in and the application process should be done while your current temporary residence permit/visa is still valid. Since there is no interview during the application process for this permit, your chances of success in securing it depend upon the documents you submit during the process. The mandatory documents required during the application process are:
Please note that these are only common requirements for the EU in general. Some member countries may have a few additional requirements that change based on the category of the applicant. Ensure that you have all the correct information and documents ready before you begin the application process.
The long term permits validity changes according to the rules of your host country but in the majority of cases, the permit is renewed automatically at the end of each year without you having to fulfil any conditions or requirements.
Note: There is also a variation in the cost of an EU long-term residence permit between the different countries. For example, applicants in the Netherlands need to EUR 171, while Germany only charges a fee of EUR 109.
A permanent settlement permit grants you the primary benefit of being able to legally reside within Germany for an extended period of time. The main conditions that you have to fulfill in order to be eligible for this permit are as follows:
These requirements are not strict and there are a number of cases where an exemption can be made. Some of the requirements for exemption are:
You will need to make an appointment with the German Foreigners Registration Office to start the application process. Please note that they do not entertain walk-ins and you must schedule an appointment. The required documents for the application are given below:
1. Germany Settlement Permit application form which includes questions on your identity, time spent in Germany and your occupation etc.
2. Valid passport which you will have to submit to the German authorities while your application is being processed.
3. A photo taken within the last 3 months and adhering to the official guidelines set forth in your application form.
4. Proof of sufficient income which depends on your employment status:

6. Proof that you are paying into the pension system
7. Proof of a registered address
8. Rental agreement with your landlord or purchase proof of property
9. German language certificate with an exam grade showing B1 level of proficiency or higher
When you submit your application for a permanent residence permit you will also have to sit with an interview with the officials at the registration office. The interview usually lasts 15-20 minutes with the interviewer asking you questions regarding your application and background.
Note: The cost of a permanent residence permit is EUR 135 but there are different prices for self-employed people who need to pay a fee of EUR 200 and highly-qualified people who need to pay a fee of EUR 250.
The options for securing a permanent residence permit for France depends upon whether you are applying for the first time for a resident permit in France or you have renewed a residence permit prior. Based on the above, you have the following options available to you:

EU Blue Card – The EU Blue card is a permit that allows foreign nationals from outside the EU to enter and remain in France to work and explore career opportunities in their chosen fields for a period of up to 3 years with an option to extend the stay further.
You will have to apply for a residence permit while you are still living in France. If your French long stay visa has the words “carte de sjour solliciter stamped on it, you will have to apply for a residence permit within 2 months of your arrival in France. If your French visa has the following text stamped on it: “CESEDA R.311-3, you will need to get in touch with the Office Francais de IImmigration et de IIntegration (OFFI) as soon as you are on French soil.
To apply for a French residence permit, you will need to have the following documents ready for submission along with the application form that your local French authorities will provide:
As a holder of the EU Blue card, you will find the following benefits available to you:
Yes, you can. You must work for a period of 33 months in your host country or for 21 months in case you achieve a B1 level of language proficiency. What are the benefits of an EU Blue Card?
1. Equal work and salary conditions to EU citizens
2. Freedom of movement throughout the EU
3. Social rights like access to education, health services etc.
4. Ability to bring your family with you

If you are regularly earning more than EUR 450 per month, you will need to register for a German government tax number and a certain amount will be deducted from your wages every month. This money will be returned to you at the end of the year if you file a tax return.
International students in Germany who wish to work in the country after the completion of their degrees need to apply for a normal residence permit, which is separate from your student visa. ]]>So why do students get attracted to Germany for undergraduate programs in such huge numbers?
Now that weve discussed in brief a few of the benefits and disclaimers pertaining to undergraduate studies in Germany, lets discuss the most popular bachelor courses and universities in Germany, admission and other crucial requirements and post study work benefits.
German universities rank highly in the QS World Rankings, with 8 of them ranking amongst the top 150 institutes in the world. The rankings take into account factors like academic reputation, research impact and employment rates of graduates in reputed companies. German institutes of higher education are renowned for offering quality programs to their students, taught by professors that are not only devoted to their students but are dedicated researchers as well. If you are lucky enough, you might even get a chance to be taught by a Nobel laureate as 10 scientists from Germany have been awarded the honour in the last 17 years.
Some of the top ranked German universities that offer undergraduate degrees are:
The following is a list of some of the most popular undergraduate courses selected by international students studying in Germany:
The latest figures released by the Federal Statistical Office of Germany for 2017-18 winter semester show that 70% of Indian students in German universities are enrolled in Engineering courses, 12% in Mathematics and Natural Sciences and 13% in Law and Social Studies.
Universities in Germany are autonomous and they each have their own separate criteria for admitting students. However, there are certain mandatory requirements that apply to all Indian students looking to apply for undergraduate courses in Germany. Technically, you are eligible for a bachelors program if you fulfil one of the requirements listed below:
You will also be required to submit the following documents during the admission process:
Some universities may also ask applicants to provide a letter of reference or a letter of recommendation. These are considered essential for admission into certain programs and allow the admission officer to understand the students previous academic history or any work experience as described by a former teacher/employer. A good letter of reference/recommendation makes an application stand out and may prove extremely valuable for degrees that arent overly reliant on transcripts, grades or scores but need proof that a candidate is authentic, creative and can keep up with the rigours of their chosen program.
Note: Please check the university website and the specific program you are interested in to find the exact requirements for admission.
Indian students who wish to study in Germany for their undergraduate degree may also have to clear the Feststellungsprfung, an examination conducted by most universities that is designed to evaluate your proficiency in the core subjects of your degree program and the German language as well. To help you prepare for this exam, there is an option of attending a Studienkolleg in Germany. A Studienkolleg functions as a foundation course and prepares you for the assessment exam. It is a full-time course that takes 2 semesters (1 year) to complete.
This course has two components:
The minimum criterion for admission into a Studienkolleg is –
After preparing and successfully taking the Feststellungsprfung, you will be eligible to apply for a bachelors degree course in the university you wish to attend.
Note: According to the DAAD website, there are a limited number of undergraduate courses and Studienkollegs that use English as a medium of instruction, hence being at least intermediately proficient in German is a prerequisite for any student looking to pursue a degree after 12th in Germany.
In 2014, 16 states in Germany abolished tuition fees for all students, international and domestic, at all public universities. However, in the autumn of 2017, the state of Baden-Wurttemberg in south-west Germany reintroduced tuition fees for international students. Foreign students who are enrolled in universities in Baden-Wurttemberg will now have to pay tuition fees of EUR 3000 per year for undergraduate degrees at public universities.
The rest of the states still do not require tuition fees for undergraduate courses at public universities, but students still have to pay a charge per semester that covers enrolment, confirmation and administration. It’s usually no more than EUR 250 per semester, but may vary slightly amongst different universities.
However, one must know that finding free or low cost English-language programs at German public universities isn’t easy. This is because most of the undergraduate courses at German universities are taught in German. According to the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service), 116 bachelor programs are taught completely in English, but when the search is narrowed down to bachelor degrees with no tuition fee, only 60 programs remain. Therefore, in order to get a top-notch bachelor course, one either has to show excellent proficiency in German language by the way of a German language standardised test, or pay tuition fees at a private German university in order to study a chosen course in English (while learning German on the side). Either way, learning German is necessary to be able to explore and understand the country, network with locals and fellow university mates and enjoy post study work benefits.
A majority of universities in Germany are public, however the private institutions that exist are usually dependent on outside funding and tuition fees for their finances. As such, they charge a significantly higher fee which can start from EUR 2,000 per year and go beyond it as well.
After completing your undergraduate degree from a German university, you can avail the benefits listed below:
Germany offers a wide range of programs that encompass a large variety of subjects at the undergraduate level. Most of these programs have German as the medium of instruction, but English language courses are available too. Earning an undergraduate degree from a German institute will make it easier for you to apply for a masters degree in Germany too.
Since every university in Germany is autonomous, all of them have their own set of criteria for admitting students. You can check the official websites of the universities you are interested in to find the exact requirements. However, in principle, you are eligible to apply for a bachelors program if you:
The answer to this question is a bit complex. The number of bachelors programs taught entirely in English is low compared to courses at the masters level. Hence, you are at least required to be at the B1 or intermediate level of German proficiency before you decide to apply. Even if you dont need to be fluent in German to apply for a course, you will need it to get around the city you are studying in and interacting with people around you.
A Studienkolleg is a foundation course specifically designed to help international students who wish to study in Germany and need to pass the qualifications assessment exam. It acts as a bridge that allows you to familiarise yourself with the academic culture in Germany and polish your language and other skills that you need to clear the qualifications assessment exam. The duration of a Studienkolleg is 1 year or 2 semesters. You dont need to pay a fee to attend a Studienkolleg but you do have to clear a final exam at the end of the course.
The Feststellungsprfung is an examination that is conducted by universities to screen potential candidates on the basis of their proficiency in the subjects they wish to study and the German language. The test has a written and an oral component and if you clear the exam, you will be eligible to apply for a bachelors degree course. Please note that clearing this exam does not guarantee admission to a university, rather it opens up more options in terms of universities you can apply to.
