 <title>Update for 09-11-09</title>
 <description>
DEMOLITION UPDATES: After more than a month, demolition work resumed today at Tiger Stadium. Meanwhile, demo crews have punched several holes in the sides of the ground floor of the Lafayette Building. Asbestos remediation has been going on for nearly a month, so I am regretfully changing the status of the Lafayette from "closed" to "under demolition." BuildingsofDetroit.com is working with the Detroit Historical Society to save pieces of the Lafayette from the landfill, such as the gorgeous building directory. We''ll keep you posted with updates and post photos once demolition begins in earnest.

 <title>Update for 06-24-09</title>
 <description>
NEW PHOTOS AND SAD NEWS: It's been a crazy week for Detroit's landmarks. First, the upper deck collapsed unexpectedly at Tiger Stadium on Monday, June 22. We've got photos here and added a couple of videos showing the devastation on our YouTube channel.
Then, on the next day, the Detroit City Council voted almost unanimously to deny granting a local historic designation to the endangered Lafayette Building. While such a designation would aid the process to get tax credits that may help lure a developer, Council President Ken Cockrel Jr. said, "You can’t save every historic building. You just can’t." Demolition appears almost certain.

 <title>Update for 03-26-09</title>
 <description>
URGENT: On March 16, 2009, the Downtown Development Authority put out a request for proposals for "the complete demolition" of the Lafayette Building. The bids are due April 2, 2009. That means there is less than a week to save this historic structure. Preservation Wayne and others have fought to get the building historic designation in an effort to save it, urging the cash-strapped city to clean up and secure the Lafayette instead of spending millions to raze it.

The only person who can stop the DDA and DEGC's plans to demolish the Lafayette are Mayor Ken Cockrel Jr. Supporters are urged to e-mail letters urging the mayor to stop the demolition to: kenneth.cockrel@detroitmi.gov or to sign this online petition. We've also added more photos to the Lafayette Building page.

 <title>Update for 11-19-08</title>
 <description>
NEW LOCATION ADDED: We've added a history, old & contemporary photos, postcards and more of the Soldiers and Sailors Monument in Campus Martius. It is one of Detroit's oldest surviving pieces of public art and one of the earliest Civil War memorials in the United States. Did you know Gens. George Custer and Ambrose Burnside were among those present for its unveiling?

Coming Friday: A look at one of Detroit's relatively unknown national and state registered historic landmarks.

 <title>Update for 11-18-08</title>
 <description>
UBER UPDATE: We added old photos, artifacts, postcards and an exhaustive history (perhaps TOO exhaustive) on Detroit's most-endangered landmark of the moment, the Lafayette Building. Photos of how it looks currently, both inside and out, should be up real soon.
We've also updated the histories of the Statler Hotel and the Hotel Ste. Claire with more detail, added lots of historic photos of the Michigan Central Railroad Depot, and we have sprinkled new postcards and historic photos for many buildings.
Coming Wednesday: A look at a monument loaded with 900-pound soldiers and one fierce Indian queen.

 <title>Update for 10-21-08</title>
 <description>
TWO NEW PLACES ADDED: It's two for Tuesday at BoD.com, where we're serving up two helpings of Cadillac today. First, we have what could have been Detroit's most unusual monument ever, the Cadillac Chair. And have you ever wondered what stood where the Book-Cadillac is today? Or where the Book-Cadilllac got its name? Check out the Cadillac Hotel. As I always say, if the place was good enough for William Howard Taft, it's worth reading about.

 <description>
NEW BUILDING ADDED: We've finally got the Westin Book Cadillac hotel page up. Check out renovation photos, historic postcards, old photos and more on the Book-Caddy's page here. Sorry for the delay, but it was an exhaustive history to put together. We'll be adding more photos in coming weeks of the finished hotel, so be sure to check back.
We've been working on several buildings at once, so updates should become more frequent. We're also looking at a more user-friendly redesign.
