The Natural Area Preservation Division of Ann Arbor Parks and Recreation is holding a photo contest. Photos with the theme "Native Trees and Shrubs of Southeastern Michigan" and "Stewardship: People Caring for Nature" may be submitted. Submissions are due Sept. 4. Red Cross collects phones for soldiers

The Washtenaw County Chapter of the American Red Cross will team up with Cell Phones for Soldiers by becoming a drop-off point at its building, 4624 Packard Road, in Ann Arbor.

Cell Phones for Soldiers collects cell phones and donations to provide prepaid calling cards for more than 150,000 soldiers who are overseas. Residents can support the collection drive by donating their phones.

Washtenaw Community Health Organization names new executive director

The Washtenaw Community Health Organization has appointed Patrick Barrie as its new executive director. Barrie has served as interim executive director since February. He replaces Kathleen Reynolds, who retired after leading the organization since 2000.

VFW awards dinner planned for Friday

The C. Robert Arvin VFW Post 2408 holds its eighth annual Awards for Excellence Dinner on Friday at the Washtenaw Country Club in Ypsilanti Township. Cocktails will be served at 6 p.m. with dinner at 7 p.m.

The Ann Arbor YMCA is still accepting applications for a free week-long celebration of swimming designed to help kids stay safe and healthy at the beach, pool or water park this summer.

Parents can register children in first through third grade for the program, which takes place next weekJune 22-26, 2009.

YMCA aquatics instructors will demonstrate safe activity in and around the water and offer free swim lessons, games for the swimming pool, contests and parent education sessions.

Chelsea's 175th Anniversary Celebration to hold fundraising auction

The committee planning Chelsea's 175th Anniversary Celebration will have a fundraising auction Monday at 8 p.m. at Reddeman Farms Golf Club, 555 S. Dancer Road, Chelsea. Doors open at 7 p.m.

Among items that will be auctioned are a handmade quilt, a 2009 membership to Reddeman Farms Golf Club, etched glass artwork, 175th anniversary merchandise and many other items.

Organizers are asking for a $15 donation at the door, which includes appetizers, coffee and soft drinks. A cash bar will be available.

Washtenaw County Red Cross Chapter hosts annual meeting

The Washtenaw County Chapter of the American Red Cross will host its annual meeting on Wednesday, June 24 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Washtenaw Community College Morris Lawrence Atrium, 4700 E. Huron River Drive.

The program will include board member elections, the annual volunteer appreciation awards and a light buffet dinner.

The Red Cross board consists of 23 Washtenaw County residents with backgrounds in business, education, accounting, manufacturing, health care and social services. The volunteer board is responsible for leading and overseeing the efforts of the Washtenaw County chapter to prevent, prepare and respond to emergencies.

The American Red Cross of Washtenaw County provides 97 percent of the blood and blood products needed by Washtenaw County hospitals, delivers emergency services to families who experience home fires or other disaster, trains residents in lifesaving skills and delivers emergency messages for families with loved ones in the armed forces.

Farmers may obtain free record book from Washtenaw, Monroe County MSU Extension offices

A new crop production record-keeping book is available free from the Washtenaw and Monroe County MSU Extension offices.

Farmers are required by various state and federal laws and regulations to keep certain records. This new Recordkeeping System for Crop Production, extension bulletin E-2342, includes space to record information about pesticide application, fertilizer, animal burial and composting, irrigation and employee training.

This book is designed to be kept in the tractor or pickup truck cab to record production activities as they occur.

Records may provide liability protection in the event of a complaint or lawsuit concerning the farming operation. Complete records also will help demonstrate conformance with Michigan Right-to-Farm guidelines and are needed for Michigan Agriculture Environmental Assurance Program system verification.

The Saline Depot Museum is having an "Old Vehicle Day" Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Vintage automobiles, buggies, wagons and railroad cars will be on display. A newly restored museum buggy will be pulled by horse for the first time. Visitors can ride in the buggy and on the hand-powered velocipede on the old railroad tracks.

Ann Arbor Area Community Foundation adds 4 new board members

The Ann Arbor Area Community Foundation welcomed four new community members to its board recently.

They are Brian Campbell, president and chief executive officer of investment corporation Campbell Industries Inc.; Jennifer Poteat, an estate-planning lawyer in private practice; Paul Schutt, publisher, co-founder and co-CEO of Issue Media Group; and Tessa Robertsom, a Greenhills School student who plans to graduate in 2011 and will serve as the Youth Council Representative to the board.

The organization has also named its new board leaders: Hugh Morgan, chairman; Martha Darling, vice chairwoman; David Sarns, treasurer; and Jyoti Gupta, secretary.

Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan awards 25 grants

Several Washtenaw and Livingston county nonprofits were awarded $25,000 grants Wednesday from the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan, which gave out 25 such grants to mark its 25th anniversary.

The foundation said each organization embodies one or more of the 12 ideals central to its mission.

Three Ann Arbor area nonprofits - Catholic Social Services of Washtenaw, University of Michigan School of Public Health and Nonprofit Enterprises at Work - were among the organizations to receive grants. The Livingston Area Council Against Spousal Abuse also received funding.

Movie screening to raise ALS awareness

Ann Arbor Active Against ALS will hold a screening of the film "Indestructible" at the Michigan Theater on Sunday to raise awareness about ALS and funds for research.

The film will be shown at 2 p.m. It will be preceded by a five-minute documentary about the nonprofit A2A3, which was created after Bob Schoeni, a University of Michigan professor and community youth coach, was diagnosed with ALS. After the film, a roundtable discussion will be held.

The film is open to the public, with a suggested donation of $10 per person. More information can be found at www.a2a3.org.

Free Huron Valley Ambulance day camps begin next week

Huron Valley Ambulance is holding two free Camp 9-1-1 day camps next week in Ypsilanti and Belleville. The camps, which run from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on two consecutive days, are open to 8- to 12-year-olds.

The first camp is Monday and Tuesday at the Eastern Michigan University Student Center, 900 Oakwood in Ypsilanti.

The second camp is Thursday, June 11 and Friday, June 12 at the Van Buren Township Fire Department, 45400 Hull Road in Belleville.

Activities include touring an ambulance, learning CPR, and visiting a local emergency room.
