Nine Inch Nails has confirmed ten final dates after which the NIN live experience will go on indefinite hiatus.

As always, a significant percentage of the best tickets for the shows will be reserved for exclusive pre-sale on NIN.com. In this case, NIN.com pre-sale will include every ticket for the most intimate farewell shows at New York’s Bowery Ballroom and Webster Hall and Los Angeles’ Henry Fonda Theater and Echoplex.

NIN.com pre-sales will begin July 17 with general on-sales following July 31.

The Horrors will support the August 22, 23 and 25 New York dates. Mew will support August 28 in Chicago and September 2 and 3 in Los Angeles. Support for the remaining dates will be announced at a later date.

Canadian electro-pop collective Fritz Helder and the Phantoms are playing their first “official NYC showcase” tonight (July 10) at Mr. Black 3 and Canadian pop star Nelly Furtado will be in the house as well*. Fritz Helder’s debut album, the humoursly titled, Greatest Hits (Platinum Edition), dropped on July 7, 2009 on Nelly Furtado’s newly created Nelstar Music label, which appears to be an imprint of Last Gang Records or something like that. Backspacer, the much anticipated new album from Pearl Jam will drop on September 20 at “Target and other select retailers.” Oh, Eddie Vedder, remember when you still owned your soul?

The tour’s Sept. 21 kick-off on the band’s Seattle home turf comes the day after the Sept. 20 release of “Backspacer,” the group’s ninth studio album. The group recently announced plans to self-release the set via a direct distribution deal with Target and other retailers.

On July 20, “The Fixer,” the lead-off single from the forthcoming album, will hit radio and digital retailers. The song will be the second cut unveiled to the public; the band debuted a track titled “Got Some” during a June 1 appearance on the debut episode of “The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien.” [LiveDaily.com]

I just got some press information about a new film starring Patton Oswalt called Big Fan. In the movie, Oswalt plays a rabid New York Giant’s fan whose world comes crashing down around him after a chance encounter with the team’s star quarterback. Big Fan was directed by Robert Siegel, who wrote The Wrestler, and based on the trailer along, I’ll say it looks pretty good.

Big Fan will premiere in New York and Philadelphia on August 28th, and then expand afterwards. Check out the trailer after the jump.

A circle of Brooklyn-based friends have joined together with Wanduta—a new, national organization designed to support and protect independent musicians—to throw a benefit for beloved, local musician, Jon Wiley. We Are the Wiley: A Benefit Concert for Jon Wiley will feature Adam Green, Lightspeed Champion, DJ Johnny Tropical, and Chairlift at The Shank—an art space and concert venue in Williamsburg, Brooklyn—on Thursday, July 9, 2009 at 8PM.

On March 5, 2009, professional guitarist, bassist, and keyboardist, Jon Wiley awoke without feeling or mobility in his arms and legs. He was subsequently diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and incurred more than $30,000 worth of medical bills for his week-long hospital stay. After a lengthy recovery process, Jon regained most feeling in his limbs and has gone on in recent months to record and perform with Lightspeed Champion, Adam Green, and his solo project, SpaceCamp. However, he is still without the means to afford his own healthcare.

In northwest Washington, D.C., Luqman Kolade, a 27-year-old teacher, saw that the magazines had been turned around at his local Safeway. The manager of the Safeway, who declined to give his name because he was not authorized to speak to the press, said that it hadn’t been because of customer complaints and that the store had made the decision on its own. A Hudson News in Chicago also covered up the magazine.

GQ’s editor in chief, Jim Nelson, said he didn’t mind: “You always want newsstands to put the magazine out front and center. If people can’t see it, they can’t buy it. Then again, you also want people to talk about your magazine, and a little controversy is never a bad thing.” [NYTimes.com]

This Wednesday, Live Nation is adding a new wrinkle to its “No Service Fee” promotion, and offering concert goers a “one price” deal on all lawn tickets at Live Nation ticketed amphitheaters.

“Now fans have asked that we take it one step further and give a truly all-in price and so this week we’re offering a $29.99, one price deal that includes the ticket, parking, all fees and a concert meal.”

In other news, the very same Live Nation is being sued by a New Jersey resident over its so-called “No Service Fee” Wednesday’s promotion:

A Freehold concertgoer is the lead plaintiff in a class action lawsuit against Live Nation that accuses the company, which manages the PNC Bank Arts Center, of violating state consumer protection laws by padding ticket prices for events at the Holmdel amphitheater.

The lawsuit, filed in Superior Court in Mercer County last week, claims Live Nation uses deceptive pricing practices, including charging a mandatory parking fee (typically $6 a ticket) regardless of the ticket holder’s intent to park a car at the venue, and a “charity fee” of between 25 cents and $1.25 without identifying any organization benefiting from the fee. Locally, the new “all-in $29.99 concert experience” would include tickets for shows at Jones Beach and the PNC Bank Arts Center. Tickets for this week’s installment of “No Service Fee Wednesday” go on sale at 12:01 a.m. local time on July 8, 2009 at LiveNation.com. Well, whaddya know, looks like New York will have a Jazz Festival after all next year. CareFusion Corp, a medical technology company, is picking up where flagship sponsor JVC left off and sponsoring events in Newport, Chicago, Monterey, Sydney, Paris and NYC. Hey, what goes better together than medical technology and jazz?

NEW YORK – A new sponsor has emerged to resurrect New York’s flagship jazz festival and help support some of the country’s largest and oldest jazz events, organizers said Tuesday.

CareFusion Corp, a medical technology firm being spun off from Cardinal Health, will be the festival’s new corporate sponsor for an event next summer.

This year the curtain fell on the JVC Jazz Festival New York after the Japanese electronics company said it would not be sponsoring any jazz events in 2009.

But jazz impresario George Wein, who arranged the 1984 JVC sponsorship, said he plans to produce a festival at Carnegie Hall and other venues the last two weeks of June 2010 thanks to a new deal.

Interesting list I guess, heavy on the Toronto bands, I wonder if that will split the vote and work in favor of the acts from the other Canadian cities. Nice to see the truly independent Hey Rosetta! and the great, Great Lake Swimmers make the list (this makes up for a little for the Ongiara snub from a few years back). Patrick Watson made the short list again, which is a bit of a surprise, given his win two years ago, it is a good record though. Metric is probably the biggest name on the list, but the Polaris judges are a fickle bunch and unlike the Junos, name recognition doesn’t usually translate into Polaris wins.

“If there’s a common thread to these records, it’s that each artist built on previous successes by pushing themselves into even riskier artistic dimensions. Listeners will find the jury picked quite an ambitious crop this year. This is exactly the kind of artistry that Polaris aims to support,” said Jordan.

For the first time in Polaris history there are repeat nominees on the Short List. K’NAAN, Malajube and Metric also made the cut in 2006, and Plaskett, VanGaalen and Patrick Watson made it in 2007. In another first, there are no debut albums on the Short List.

A jury of 182 music journalists, broadcasters and bloggers from across Canada submitted their top five picks for best Canadian album released between June 1, 2008 and May 31, 2009.

These picks were narrowed down to a Long List of 40 which was made public June 15, 2009.

Jordan was also excited to reveal a new location and television 
partner for the 2009 Polaris Music Prize gala. The invite-only event 
is moving to The Concert Hall at the legendary Masonic Temple in 
 Toronto on September 21, 2009. In addition to the live 
broadcast on SIRIUS Satellite Radio channel 86, the show will be 
webcast live on muchmusic.com and produced for broadcast by 
MuchMusic. Broadcast dates will be announced soon.

 “The Polaris Music Prize is a celebration of amazing Canadian music 
and that is exactly what MuchMusic has always been about,” said Brad
