Under Great White Northern Lights

As they like to say in the infomercials, but wait, there’s more… The second half of this giveaway is a DVD copy of Under Great White Northern Lights, the brand new documentary feature from the White Stripes which is a tour diary of their awe-inspiring 2007 cross Canada tour.

Wakey!Wakey!’s new record “Almost Everything I Wish I’d Said the Last Time I Saw You…” officially came out today (March 16) on The Family Records and lead singer and songwriter Michael Grubbs took some time to sit down with us to discuss the new album, his upcoming SXSW appearances and his burgeoning acting career.

1. The title of your new album “Almost Everything I Wish I’d Said the Last Time I Saw You” sounds like it’s a line from a break-up. Is this a break-up record?
MG: I prefer to think of it as a recovery album. There are elements of lost love in it, but in reality it’s the story of what happens after the break up.

2. Because you’ve made a couple of live records (“Silent As A Movie” and “Live at The Bowery Ballroom”), I associate your music with a sort of raw live sound, but this record has a more polished sound, is this the way you’ve always wanted to record your songs?
MG: Absolutely. I love capturing a live show and the raw energy of it all, but in real life I’m a little bit too much of a control freak for that to be the only statement I make.

3. What was the state of the new songs on “Almost Everything…” before you came into the studio, had you played a lot of them live already? Or were they more like demos that you worked up on in the studio?
MG: They were all in different states. Some were completely done, and a few were missing a verse here or there. My favorite was “Light Outside”. It wasn’t even supposed to be on the album. When we realized the scope of the release, we realized we needed some more material for bonus tracks and such. I’ve always worked best under pressure, so I just sat down and wrote it the night before we went into the studio. It’s turned out to be our first radio single.

4. The introductions to older songs like “Brooklyn”, “Take it Like A Man”, and “Car Crash”, could almost pass for classical recordings, but there’s no mistaking most of the new songs on “Almost Everything…” as pop compositions. Maybe it’s just a function of being in the studio, but to me, it seems as if you’re moving away from what I would call “chamber pop”, to more of a “pure pop” or even “synth pop” sound, do you agree?
MG: I’m just trying to incorporate more sounds and textures into the music. I don’t want to put a string cadence into a song that doesn’t need it. I also don’t want to throw unnecessary synths on anything. One song I just play completely live and solo. I do enjoy playing dancier stuff sometimes though.

5. You’ve been doing some acting lately on CW’s “One Tree Hill”. I know you are a classically trained musician, but where did you learn your acting chops?
MG: I studied both music and theatre in college. This is my first experience with on camera stuff though. I was always a stage guy. [But what about that AT&T commercial? ed.]

6. You are a musician and a former bartender, and “Grubbs”, the character you play on “One Tree Hill” is a musician and (somewhat clairvoyant) bartender, was this part written specifically with you in mind?
MG: Mark Schwahn, the creator of the show actually met me while I was standing behind a bar. It was at the Bar 4 open mic. I played “War Sweater”, and he wanted to use it on the show. After that we became friends, and he decided to write this role for me. People are always surprised when they see the depth of the music, because a lot of them are meeting us through the show. They assume I’m just an actor with a vanity project. I’m happy to surprise them, though.

7. What’s more exciting, to hear a song of yours on the radio, or to see yourself on TV?
Do you think it is harder to make it as a musician today or an actor?
MG: I’ve been playing music and working toward hearing my music on the radio for ten years, so that’s definitely more satisfying to me personally. I think that breaking out in any aspect of the arts, especially on your own, is practically impossible, and I feel really lucky to have the attention I currently do.

8. What are you working on right now? What does the future have in store for Wakey!Wakey!?
MG: Right now we’re getting ready for SXSW. We’re currently booked to play quite a bit down there. As far as the future goes, we’re planning extensive touring in North America, and in Europe.

Glam pop singer Lady Gaga on Monday announced 31 U.S. concert dates as her fans went wild for a controversial new music video that features R&B star Beyonce and lesbian prison sex.

Meanwhile, Lady Gaga’s latest music video — a 10 minute mini-film to accompany her single “Telephone” — had racked up more than 15.5 million views on YouTube by Monday after its release late on Thursday night.

The video, which starts in a leather-clad fantasy women’s prison and later has Lady Gaga and Beyonce poisoning customers in a diner, was also among the top hottest topics on Twitter.

The 23 year-old singer has boosted her career, as well as record sales that now total around 10 million albums worldwide, with daring stunts including setting her piano alight at the American Music Awards and having fake blood drip from her rib cage in a 2009 live performance. [Reuters/NYTimes]

Broken Bells at the Music Hall of Williamsburg

I was introduced to Broken Bells by the best episode of NPR’s All Songs Considered podcast that I can remember, which included new tracks by some of my favorite current bands: Local Natives, Yeasayer, Freelance Whales and, of course, Broken Bells. Bob could just as well have opened the show with, “Hey Chris, here is what you’ll be listening to for the next four months.” People often ask me how I find out about new music, and without fail the first thing I tell them is All Songs Considered.

Broken Bells certainly looks good on paper: Danger Mouse, a veritable behemoth of a producer, and James Mercer, the singer/songwriter behind the The Shins. I loved the first single, “The High Road“, immediately. It has a distinctively Shins-y feel, for Mercer’s voice is beautifully unique, and the production is naturally exquisite, with Danger Mouse’s identifiable fingerprint. The collaboration reeked of a dynamic duo, and although I was eagerly awaiting the release of the album, as the show grew closer I found myself too goddamned busy every night and kept forgetting to listen to it, so I eventually decided to avoid doing so. I wanted to go into the show as blind as possible, which is what I did.

Going to the Music Hall of Williamsburg is like having a dream about the Bowery Ballroom. It’s so much like Bowery, and in your dream you know you’re at Bowery, but it’s terribly confusing and there are rooms that look like the outside but are actually the inside and there are staircases all over the damn place that lead to sections of the venue that you didn’t even know existed. I’ve only been to the Music Hall a few times, and every time it’s an adventure trying to find the floor of the venue. But we did, only a few minutes before Broken Bells took the stage.

I was a little worried that much of the texture of the live show would be sampled or produced from a recording, and was mighty relieved to see seven people walk out on stage. They formed a musical assembly line, each guy doing his little bit to form a wonderfully full sound. The visuals were simple, a projection over the entire stage, band and all, with seemingly aged imagery that often played off that spiky pink globe that they appear to have adopted as their logo. The show exhibited a generally modest atmosphere, which was pleasantly surprising, given all that Danger Mouse and James Mercer have accomplished at the indie level.

The first few songs sounded very much like each other, and just as my interest began to wane, they played “The Ghost Inside“, at which point I started dancing a bit and taking notes so I could locate that song later. Broken Bells effectively found their groove, which reminded me at times of David Bowie, and I ended up loving the show and wishing it hadn’t ended so soon.

I’m a sucker for a good cover, and there’s no better time for a clever cover than the encore. I don’t know that I would have opened a show with my most recognizable song, as Broken Bells did with “The High Road”, but playing it at the end of the set or for the encore is just lame. So Broken Bells comes back after a short post-set breather and plays Neil Young’s “Don’t Let It Bring You Down“, much to the enjoyment of many folks in the audience. Then, just as Mary and I were putting our coats on, James Mercer walked to the mic and sang, “Aaaahhh”, and right away I recognized it as one of my favorite songs of all time: “Crimson and Clover” by Tommy James and the Shondells.

The show was quite good, the encore fucking incredible. There is some top-notch music being made right now, so please for the love of god get out there and see some of it.

Broken Bells at MHOW (03/10/10) by Jon Klemm

Damn you week of March 9 new releases…. why must you have so many noteworthy so as to make me choose just a couple. Because there are so many, I’m profiling more and giving less space to each as a result. There’s a greatest hits release from the newly reunited Pavement; the Danger Mouse/James Mercer collaboration debut Broken Bells; along with new releases from Ted Leo, Liars and a crazy interpretation of Orpheus & Eurydice from Anais Mitchell. Other new releases I would have profiled nearly any other week include ones from Gorillaz, The Besnard Lakes, Frightened Rabbits, Jason Collett, Miles Kurosky (ex-Beulah), White Hinterland, jj, Titus Andronicus, The Morning Benders, The Whigs, Free Energy and the subject of Heavy Metal in Baghdad, Acrassicauda.

Playlist: New Releases 03.09.10

While the band of the 1990’s only released five albums and a handful of EPs and never technically had any hits (save “Cut Your Hair,” which was at least a hit in circles I traveled), Quarantine the Past: The Best of Pavement gives the (correct) impression of a much deeper career. You’d be hard pressed to pick a better track list for the band. I”m sure there’s a song or two that some wish were on here, but it’s hard to argue with early cuts like “Box Elder” and b-sides like “Unseen Power Of The Picket Fence”.

An album from Liars requires a certain length of time to sit in your head before it opens up and lets you in. After taking up residence in Berlin (Drums Not Dead) and Salem (They Were Wrong, So We Drowned), Sisterworld is the product of Los Angeles, albeit, a paranoid and colder version of the city than many might recognize. The band has fine-tuned their tribal and creepy take on the rock genre, but are still light years from mass appeal — something that’s never seemed to be in their interest. Upon first listen, it’d be hard to convince the listener that the album has a ‘catchy’ bone in its body, but after living with it for a month, I can attest that the bones are there. Just have to pick away at the meat for awhile… so only approach with great patience.

Singer Inara George and multi-instrumental/producer Greg Kurstin, aka The Bird and The Bee, will release Interpreting The Masters Volume 1: A Tribute To Daryl Hall And John Oates, on March 23 via Blue Note Records. The new album will feature eight classic covers along with the original song “Heard It On The Radio.” The band played a pre-album release show at the El Rey Theater in LA on March 5, but no future tour dates have been scheduled as Inara George is expecting a new release of her own (and by that, I mean a baby) on April 30. The entire El Rey show was webcast live at Livestream.com, and will be archived on the site starting March 22.

With their new album La La Land set to drop on April 20, Plants and Animals have just announced a major North American tour starting with a bunch of appearances at SXSW. They’ll be playing the Bowery Ballroom on June 9 (Buy Tickets), but they were also just here last week supporting Broken Bells at MHOW where they managed to put the “power” back in power trio. They also just released a brand new video for “The Mama Papa” which was directed and conceived by Sinbad Richardson, and stars Plants and Animals and as well as the actor, Joe Cobden.

In February, Sweden’s The Shout Out Louds released their third record on Merge entitled Work, and they were just in town to play a sold out show at the Music Hall of Williamsburg on March 1. (They also played two more impromptu shows after that, one at Pianos and one at White Slab on Delancey and Allen.) If you didn’t catch of any of those shows, have no fear though, the band is heading out on tour again and they’ll be back in town May 5 at Webster Hall, once again with “Brooklyn buzz band” Freelance Whales (Buy Tickets).

In addition to the upcoming tour, the band just issued a mini-documentary on the making of Work titled “Shout Out Louds … at Work.” Directed by the band’s bassist and renowned video director Ted Malmros, “Shout Out Louds … at Work” provides a deep glimpse into the process that went into the creation of the songs that make up the new studio album. Esquire Magazine recently commended the band and their track “Walls,” naming it March’s “Perfect Pop Song of the Month” and describing it as a “truly memorable moment — too rarely does a modern pop song leave you humming an old-fashioned man-made piano hook.”

Through the alluring moving images and stills taken from interviews with the band and Phil Ek, their producer, to the Washington woodlands where Work was recorded, the mini-documentary presents itself as a diary that captures all of the emotions evoked from the pressure, as well as the excitement, of creating such a highly anticipated release.

Pearl Jam announced today that they will play 11 Midwest and East Coast tour dates in May of 2010. The tour kicks-off on May 3rd at Sprint Center in Kansas City and wraps on May 21st at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Pearl Jam’s U.S. tour follows the band’s previously announced headlining appearance at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Foundation Festival on May 1st. Band of Horses will open all shows except the May 20th Madison Square Garden engagement, where The Black Keys will open. [PearlJam.com]

Apparently, he’s not satisfied with limiting his jokes to 140 characters anymore, so starting next month, Conan O’Brien will head out on the road to do a series of live dates across the US and Canada. Tickets for his June 1 show at Radio City Music Hall go on sale today (Mar 11) at 10AM EST (Buy Tickets). Who knows, if the tour goes well, it might lead to some television work.
