Hosts: George Koroneos #38; Chuck Nasty
Interview: Todd Morse of H2O
Music: Brine + Bastards, H2O, Young Werewolves, Iron Maiden

Show Notes:
This week we talk about whether melodic hardcore really is hardcore, we interview Todd Morse of H2O about his new record "Nothing to Prove," GTA IV is discussed to death, and we prattle on about seeing Iron Maiden in Jersey.

Please send all questions and comments to: george@lifeinabungalo.com

Songs played:
Brine + Bastards: Song of the Siren
H2O: Nothing to Prove
H2O: FTTW
Young Werewolves: Hollywood
Iron Maiden: Aces High

Edit Note: We say we are going to play the EF version of Aces High, but we couldn't find it. So the Maiden version should do. The transcribed version of the H2O interview should be up soon. Also, we really love hardcore and Agnostic Front. Please don't come after us.</itunes:summary>

With his striking mustachioed looks and a sound that can make just about anyone break into a circle dance, Eugene Hutz has taken his troupe of gypsy punks from obscurity to stardom. The band: Gogol Bordello. The sound: Like nothing you've ever heard before. They straddle the line between Th' Legendary Shackshakers and traditional gypsy flamenco, blending accordians, strings, and distorted guitars with tales of hope, defeat, and triumph.

This year, Gogol Bordello have released their best record to date, and hands down the record of the year at Life In A Bungalo. We gave frontman Eugene Hutz a call before his upcoming New Year's Eve show at New York's Terminal 5 to learn more about the band's rise to stardom, and what it's like being a punk in the Ukraine. This is a podcast interview. Please click on the player below to listen or drop the feed into your favorite podcast player.

<itunes:summary>From the moment Lookout! Records released the self-titled Donnas record in 1997, punk rockers the world over were smitten with this quartet of rock #38; roll hotties. Luckily, the band had the chops to back up their pixie-like demeanor. These gals play rock as if it was forged into the Earth by a female god rather than Gene Simmons, and they shred harder than any of the punk rock boy band gracing the cover of Rolling Stone. The best part, they could probably kick my ass. Or at least shred it. Life In A Bungalo Digest chatted with drummer Torry Castellano about their new record, new label, and being forced to do dumb things at photo shoots. Transcribed interview will be up in a few weeks, but check out the podcast right now.

<itunes:summary>Radio Bungalo is pleased to present an interview with Jim Lindberg, lead singer of Pennywise. Besides being the vocalist of one of the biggest bands since the mid-'90s punk explosion, Lindberg is an accomplished author, recently releasing his acclaimed memoir, "Punk Rock Dad." The book sounds like it might be a silly coming of age story about a out of control punk, but in actuality it is a look at life on the road for one of the hardest working independent bands. This interview will be transcribed next week for those who would rather read than listen, but I encourage you to hear Lindberg talk about his daughters, writing, and life in Pennywise. Feel free to post a comment about your favorite Pennywise memory.

Gorilla Biscuits were one of those bands that never fit nicely into a punk rock category. They were too catchy for hardcore, too straightedge for punk, too heavy for Offspring fans, but the band had an energy that seemed to appeal to everyone that ever wore a leather jacket or a Champion hoodie and camo shorts. Tragically, most of their fans discovered them after they broke up in the early '90s. Those that got to see them on their Start Today tour still brag about it, and rightfully so. Gorilla Biscuits are legends.

Luckily, fans got a surprise in 1995 when lead singer Anthony Civorelli reunited with a good chunk of Gorilla Biscuits to form CIV. The band was quickly snatched up by Atlantic Records, and released Set Your Goals, what might as well have been the third GB record (and a record that personifies the mid-90s punk scene just as much as Smash or Dookie). The band toured the country on the Warped Tour, and along with H2O and Sick of it All, breathed new life into a dying New York hardcore scene. Sadly, the mid-'90s punk revival was crushed under a wave of Neu Metal and bands like CIV were swept to the side. But they never faded away. The band's hit single "Can't Wait One Minute More" is still played at hockey games around the country, and CIV recently reunited Gorilla Biscuits for a sell-out tour that was nothing short of spectacular.

Kid Robot recently announced the release of a new tattoo series of Dunnys (coming April 5). Once word got out the packaging and one of the coolest figures in the lineup was made by CIV, Life In A Bungalo jumped at the chance to talk to the hardcore legend to learn more about his tattooing, his toys, and his music. Here's what he had to say.

Did you ever collect toys?
I collected the big GI Joe figures and that's about it. I wasn't into collecting cause it was just too much stuff for me, and I'm a hoarder anyway. I never really knew what a Dunny was and luckily my girlfriend was like, "Are you completely retarded. They are so cool, blah, blah, blah. You have to do this." I was like, "OK." Then I started seeing all the stuff and I started looking at stuff Super 7 does and Kid Robot does. Now it's cool. I like it.

The last time I saw you guys was at Hardcore for Hunger at Tramps and then you kinda of disappeared. You might have toured, but not around here.
The last show CIV played was in Okinawa in 2000 and then I went through a divorce and all this shit where I was just going to be a hermit and tattoo. I have been tattooing since '92 and I just did music intermittently, but for the last seven years I have just been tattooing. Except for last summer when I went on tour with Gorilla Biscuits for five weeks. That was it.

Did you tattoo before the first Gorilla Biscuits incarnation?
I think we started with Gorilla Biscuits in late '85, early '86, and I started tattooing in '92, so the music was first, and when Gorilla Biscuits broke up, I started tattooing.

Is [tattooing] a passion you always had? Were you an artist first?
I drew as a kid, but I had never been trained in any way. I think it's like a curse and a blessing where I had a lot of friends who went to art school and they just draw and then I have other friends that don't know what they are doing and they do great stuff. I feel like I should know how to oil paint or something better, but I don't know technique. I just do what I do.

I know a lot of you [hardcore] guys were tattoo artists, but I wasn't sure who actually was. I heard that Jimmy Gestapo was a tattoo artist, or owned a shop.
He actually owns a shop. Him and Vinnie [Stigma] own a tattoo shop, but neither one of them tattoos. They are owners.

Growing up in the hardcore scene, I just knew that a lot of you guys were covered and wasn't sure who was doing them to people. Are you responsible for a lot of them being covered in tattoos?
Those guys were</itunes:summary>

		<itunes:summary>Bastards of Young DVD
Image Entertainment

Bastards of Young is a feature-length that sadly has nothing to do with The Replacements (even if it does borrow its name from their classic single). Instead, the documentary focuses on the New Jersey punk-emo scene that spawned in the ashes of the 1994 punk revival. While I could care less about the bands featured in the movie, the director does a fantastic job showing how different growing up punk in New Jersey is from the rest of the world.

New Jersey has a different kind of scene, a different kind of sound, and unity that seems to exist way after punk died off in the wake of the rap/rock movement. The film talks in detail about the New Brunswick basement show, mentioning the birth of the scene at Handy Street and the part The Bouncing Souls played in uniting punks throughout the state.

Production is top-notch. Tons of interviews, great information, and professional editing give the film a real polished look. Bands showcased include, Fall Out Boy, From Autumn To Ashes, and Thursday. Full songs from live shows are a nice touch, but make the film drag a little. It also would have been nice if they actually interviewed some of the more old school bands that really gave their blood sweat and tears for the movement, such as The Bouncing Souls, Lifetime and Weston, but I won't nitpick. This film is a snapshot of a scene that lives and breathes the DIY ethos, pick it up or rent it. It's worth it for nostalgia alone.

<itunes:summary>Formed in 1989 by Danish submarine operator and tattooist Kim Nekroman, The Nekromantix survived at least two waves of psychobilly going on to release successful records on Epitaph's Hellcat imprint. Commandeering a handmade coffin-shaped upright bass, Nekroman has written dozens of songs featuring the creatures of the night and tons and tons of ghouls. But one of his biggest accomplishments was taking his spooky writing and translating it into psycho- bubble-gum- pop punk with is latest band The Horrorpops. Formed with his wife Patricia, The Horrorpops have traveled the world supporting two hit records and Nekroman doesn't seem ready to rest just yet. Life In A Bungalo chatted with Nekroman in the bowels of Maxwell's just after their gig on March 18.

Looking at the Horrorpops on stage, I realized that the band consists of three bassists. Is it interesting writing music... Is your drummer a bassist?

No. He's a drummer-drummer. He's a sound engineer though. That was the whole thing when me and Patricia started this band. We swapped instruments on purpose just to get a different angle on writing music, so when I'm with the Horrorpops I'm a guitarist.

As far as writing, were you always a guitarist?

No, no, no. Not until we started the Horrorpops. Patricia had played guitar before. So we just said lets fucking swap [instruments] and make it interesting.

So you taught each other how to play?

Yeah.

The Horrorpops are a lot different than The Nekromantix---you're both fun bands but they sound completely different. You've been doing [psychobilly music] since the late '80s, was this something you just wanted to try?

Well, me an Patricia met and we were talking about all this different types of music that we both liked---she comes from the punk rock environment and I come from psychobilly, and it was annoying that you couldn't do anything without people saying that's not whatever, whatever. Since our influences are everything from Dolly Parton to Motorhead we wanted to have a band where if we want to play a rock song, we play a rock song; if we want to play a new wave song, we could play a new wave song; if we want to play pop, we play pop. That was the whole idea with Horrorpops.

Have you accomplished that?

I think so. Yeah.

When the first album came out, you guys really tried to stay away from the whole psychobilly sound, but with the new album you have added some country flavor. You are expanding a little more into the different styles.

We try everything. If it's an arena song---we want to be allowed to do it without people saying we can't because we are a such and such type of band. We are basically fooling around with all the different genres.

How about the fans? Psychobilly is huge in Europe. Was there a negative reception to the Horrorpops.

Not at all. It has been very positive from the start. At the start we saw a lot of greasers, punks and psychobilly kids at the shows, but now we see a crossover of all kinds of types. I didn't want to have a band with the same fans as Nekromantix.

Both bands have had a rotating cast of members. Do you even have a band for The Nekromantix yet (the drummer and guitarist left last year)?

We switched it up and we had a tour last year and we are gonna tour in June again.

Possibly for a new album?

Yes. We are writing songs right now actually.

Last year, you also added Geoff Kresge as bassist of The Horrorpops (formerly of AFI and Tiger Army), how has that been?

Geoff has always been a friend of the band so it was natural.

Many modern psychobilly bands cite you as an influence. There are bands like the Koffin Kats who have borrowed some of your stylings. How does it feel coming to America and seeing so many bands paying a homage to you?

It's very flattering. That's like the ultimate thing to have people not copy you, but that are heavily influenced. That's a compliment to me.

Your bass is legendary. Are you still making them yourse</itunes:summary>
