The Mayo Clinic recommends gentle exercise and strength training to alleviate arthritis pain and slow the progression of the condition.

Bignell told the online news source that they had to develop new machinery and software to craft the knit-like material.

Don't get excited just yet, as the shoes will only be sold for three-week period in New York City, Tokyo and London.

Luckily, New Balance already makes a line of footwear designed especially for individuals with bunions. The footwear features a mesh window at the joint of the big toe for comfort and flexibility.

The Craft and Hobby Association recently held its 2012 Winter Conference and Trade Show in California, displaying a wide array of creative innovations from people around the country. But there could only be one winner, and this year it was the makers of KODAK Shoe Art Film.

Users of the special material can print their favorite designs or images on it with an inkjet printer, then apply the film to shoes, where it will last for about four weeks.

“KODAK Shoe Art Film is easy to remove so that a new design can be worn every day. Show off school spirit, personal designs, a favorite pet, a favorite color, a favorite sports teams or whatever it is that makes each person unique,” said Andrea Atwater brand manager for Shoe Attitude, makers of the invention.

One could even decorate their bunion splints with the film, making the bunion correction devices appear less like medical equipment and more like an individualized foot beautification tool. 

High-end shoe designer Manolo Blahnik recently told the Wall Street Journal that he didn't want to "pollute [his] brand" by releasing a collection for a mass-market retailer. So, it came as a bit of a surprise when the blog Fashionista.com broke the news that the Spanish shoemaker was collaborating with J. Crew.

But don't get too excited, as the J. Crew Bebe shoes are expected to retail for $550 per pair, which is about the amount that a shopper would dish out for a regular pair of Manolos.

Still, they're quite pretty, if not a very simple design. The pointy-toed footwear comes in an array of colors and fabrics, from grey suede, to canary yellow metallic, to ladylike floral prints.

The shoes is light, weighing in at just 260 grams, and is designed with flexible, breathable materials to keep the feet cool and may also alleviate pressure on bony foot conditions, such as bunions or hammer toe. Additionally, the cleats are designed to provide optimal surface contact with the ground, which promotes stability.

However, for individuals with bunions or hammer toe, having a good shoe may not be enough. People with these conditions should consider using orthotics inside their golf shoes, and strapping on bunion splints post-game to help keep bony deformities in check.

While political sides remain divided on whether universal healthcare is constitutional, one thing everyone appears to agree on is that the cost of services is too high.

As such, Michael King, D.P.M., president of the American Podiatric Medical Association recently addressed the issue at the Annual National Labor and Management Conference and spoke about how podiatrists can help curb the rising cost of healthcare.

He said that untreated foot problems – which can range from diabetic ulcers to bunions and hammer toe – can potentially develop into chronic conditions that affect not just healthcare costs, but a patient's ability to work.

"Including podiatrists in all healthcare plans can help to cut healthcare costs while increasing value. By investing a small amount in prevention, we can provide quality care and proper footwear, maintain a healthy workforce, and save billions in healthcare expenditures," said King.

When left untreated, a bunion may advance to the point where bunion surgery is necessary. The operation is not only pricey, but comes with a number of risks. As such, conservative methods of bunion correction or prevention may help stave off extra healthcare costs.
