Letter to the Editor:

Community vs Corridor

Small businesses are part of the fabric of Burbank. These small businesses have survived in Burbank for so many years through hard work, sweat, and the desire to provide their service or trade to their neighbors. Olive Avenue is part of that fabric and an important part of our community.

Olive Avenue is at risk of being devastated.

Parking spaces that have been on Olive for years are to be taken away by Metro.

The county wants to take away the street parking in front of the businesses on Olive to create a permanent bus only lane or make Olive Ave one lane in each direction. The many small businesses along Olive survive off that parking and traffic flow. Many of the businesses and jobs they provide cannot exist without it.

The idea proposed for the bus lane is to get people from North Hollywood to Pasadena with “a faster and more reliable service”. Although connecting communities may be important, destroying part of a community for the sake of speed is wrong. Taking away someone’s lively-hood for the sake of speed is wrong. Tearing away the businesses that risked everything to open their storefronts to save a little travel time is wrong.

The idea that saving a few minutes in traffic, through the short stretch in Burbank, is worth the destruction of a neighborhood needs more thought.

We sometimes give too much concern to speed. In this case the need for speed will kill small businesses. We don’t want to stand in the way of progress but we need our concerns to be truly understood.

Even if a small business is opposed to the project, most people with a business can’t take the time away to object because they need to tend to their shop. The last thing a small business wants to do is speak up against a powerful regional agency. As our businesses become threatened… we must speak up.

Often small businesses can be seen as an obstacle and considered expendable. We are not expendable, we are the community. Our voices need to be heard.

There are other ways to make the bus service more reliable without the incremental erosion of our neighborhoods. Olive businesses and the jobs they provide deserve to be preserved.

Find a solution that keeps Olive Avenue a part of the Community instead of turning it into a Corridor.

Kevin Mc Carney
Burbank Resident

By Rick Assad

Memorial Field was filled with emotion Friday night before Burroughs High and Pasadena tangled in a Pacific League football game.

With several hundred fans in the stands watching and dozens of family, friends and former football teammates on the track, Cerain Baker, who played on the varsity for two years was honored.

The touching, 20-minute ceremony was hosted by former Burroughs booster president Jeff Sporkin.

Baker, along with two others were killed in an automobile accident this past August.

Sporkin, who spoke from the heart and at times had to wipe tears from his eyes, was Baker’s Vikings coach for six years.

Sporkin talked about the young man’s commitment, even at a young age to football and how he treated others.

Only 21 when he was struck down, Baker, a wide receiver who in a game versus Glendale in 2017 had 11 receptions, which is the third most in school history and 233 yards, which is second best, was remembered for not only his on the field exploits, but the generosity he showed others.

Cerain’s father, Tony, an actor and comedian, spoke about his oldest child.

“This really meant a lot. I knew that he made a mark on the community and his friends and his football teammates and being homecoming king. We called him the Mayor of Burbank because he was so loved and popular,” he said. “To us, that’s our boy. That’s our baby. Our first born. Of course, he’s going to be special to us, his parents. Just the fact that he made a connection with so many different people, it means a lot.”

Baker continued: “He didn’t phone it in. He went all in. He was emotional and passionate about winning. He was a good teammate to have and a brother as well,” he said. “He really cheered you on. There was no negative energy.”

Mike Reily was Baker’s varsity coach and talked about what he meant to the football program and what he meant as a person.

One-time teammates showing respect for Cerain Baker. (Photo courtesy Phil Hatten)

“Cerain was a good athlete, but an even better human being,” he said. “He was a loyal friend to his peers. His laugh was contagious and his smile would light up a room.”

Reily said that his personality made everyone feel at ease.

“It was always hard to be in a bad mood when near Cerain, as his zest for life seemed to spread to those around him,” he said. “He was fun to coach, a joy to be around and he will be missed.”

Keith Recchia is the linebackers and special teams coach, and knew Baker, who inspired his teammates.

“Cerain was one of those kids that always made coaches laugh, but he also showed it on the field with his effort and work ethic,” he offered. “I’ve been here 15 years and he’s one of my all-time favorite kids to coach.”

Recchia went on: “His commitment to the program. Him always wanting to win. His willingness to do anything for us as coaches,” he said. “We asked him to do it and he said, “Coach, I’ll do it. No problem.” My last year as JV [junior varsity] coach, he was on my team and that next year he went up to varsity. So I was lucky enough to coach him for three years. He left that personal impression on me. He will always be one of those kids I’ll always remember. I will always remember the things he did even in the down times. He’s going to be missed.”

Jose Calzadilla is the offensive and defensive line coach and expressed what Baker meant to those he met.

“He was great. Easy to coach. Huge smile. Light up a room when he walked into it,” he noted. “Super friendly. Great with the lower-level guys. Positive. Uplifting. Helped them when he could. He was an absolute joy to have. Loved coaching him. Played hard all the time. He played hurt.”

Losing your life at such a tender age makes it even more difficult to deal with.

“This was tragic. Just a waste. He had a tremendous future. And was such a good kid,” Calzadilla said. “It’s just ridiculous, such a silly thing as street racing took his life.”

By Rick Assad

Perhaps it was the emotion from the pregame ceremony to honor Cerain Baker, a former wide receiver who was killed along with two others in a tragic car crash this past August that helped carry the Burroughs High football team across the first half of Friday’s Pacific League match with Pasadena.

For 24 minutes, the Bears stood toe-to-toe with the giant that is the Bulldogs, trailing by seven points, but over the final two quarters, Pasadena was able to have enough chunk plays that resulted in a 35-7 win.

“There were four or five plays that made the difference in that game,” Burroughs coach Jesse Craven said. “I don’t think the final score was indicative of the effort our guys played with all night.”

The Bears’ only scoring came with 34.4 seconds left in the opening half when senior quarterback Jon English (nine of 22 for 73 yards and two interceptions) teamed up with senior wide receiver Vinny Harris on a nine-yard pass.

Rushing yards were difficult to come by against Pasadena, but Nathan Chhina-Howland does his best. (Photo courtesy Phil Hatten)

The score consumed 10 plays and trimmed Pasadena’s lead to 14-7 and saw Burroughs (3-4 and 1-2 in league action) drive 70 yards.

On the march, English spotted senior wide receiver Drake Vickers with his only reception, a 26-yarder on third and seven from the Bears’ 33-yard line and English also had an 11-yard run and a 21-yard carry.

English finished the game with 29 yards on seven carries and senior running back Nathan Chhina-Howland added 23 yards on 15 rushes.

Senior wide receiver Elijah Aldana-Pere snared four receptions for 26 yards for the Bears.

Senior running back/defensive back Jacksen Goodley recovered a fumbled punt at the Pasadena 35-yard which set up a 40-yard field goal by sophomore Brodie Kemp that hit the crossbar with 11:48 left in the second period.

The score at the intermission had the Bulldogs ahead 14-7, and considering that Pasadena, which has now won four straight games and has tallied 40 points or more four times, it’s a testament to the Bears’ roughed and sturdy defense.

“I thought our defense played well all night,” Craven said. “They came down with three long throws that changed all the momentum in the game.”

Pasadena’s 21-point outburst in the second half began with 1:56 left in the third quarter as freshman Hype Grand (three of six for 89 yards), the backup quarterback, drilled senior wide receiver Jason Sanford Jr. (115 yards on five catches) with a 65-yard run and catch.

The 60-yard, three-play excursion extended the Bulldogs’ lead to 21-7.

On Pasadena’s next possession, which began at the Burroughs 18-yard line after English was intercepted by senior strong safety/running back Daylon Beasley (77 yards on nine rushes).

The Bulldogs (6-2 and 3-0 in league play) needed just two plays to travel that distance and bolt in front 28-7 which was capped when senior signal-caller Kaden Taylor (seven of 11 for 67 yards) connected with sophomore wide receiver Cameron Mitchell with a 16-yard strike as 12.9 seconds remained in the third frame.

Pasadena’s final touchdown of the night saw Taylor find Sanford with a 14-yard pass as 4:52 was left in the game.

This march began at the Bears’ 35-yard line after English was picked off. The Bulldogs used seven plays to get into the end zone.

“We’re moving on to Muir with still a [CIF Southern Section] slot at stake,” Craven said.

Burroughs’ next league game will be against the Mustangs on Friday evening at 7 p.m.

There aren’t too many games left in the high school football season and the Burbank High football team knows there is no more room for error in order to keep a playoff streak alive.
The Bulldogs have been to the CIF Southern Section playoffs every year since 2012 with the exception being last year when the season was cut short for everyone due to COVID-19.
Thursday night the Bulldogs got a lead and were able to deliver even though it took long than expected in a 41-19 Pacific League victory at Arcadia.
“Now we set up a big showdown with CV and then with Burroughs to wrap it up. We’re starting to play playoff football this week,” Burbank Adam Colman said. “We love to be in that situation. We earned the opportunity to play next week for something meaningful.”
A loss against Arcadia would have virtually ended any hopes Burbank had of making the playoffs.
But the Bulldogs (2-6 overall, 1-2 in league) overcame their early mistakes in pulling through.
“We had a lousy practice this week, both days. People were in and out of the trainers office,” said junior receiver Jagg Richer, who had six receptions for 116 yards and a touchdown. “So this was a great team win. We came together. We were up at halftime and we had a good halftime speech by the coaches. We got hyped up and came out here and did our thing.”

Richer scored the game’s first touchdown, a 12-yard pass from junior quarterback Dylan Robinson with 7:31 left in the first quarter.
Arcadia (3-4, 0-3) tied things up a six as its quarterback, Jonathan Maldonado, scored on a 3-yard run with 2:17 left in the first quarter.
Maldonado added a 6-yard touchdown at the 11:16 mark of the second quarter to give Arcadia a 12-6 lead.
It was the only lead the Apaches would have though.
Burbank came right back and less than a minute re-took the lead as Robinson scored on a 5-yard run. The extra point by Freddy Cardenas put Burbank in front, 13-12.
Robinson hooked up with fellow junior Jonathan Powell on a 22-yard touchdown with 2:05 left before halftime. That gave Burbank a 20-12 advantage.
The Bulldogs had a chance to make the fourth quarter more relaxing. Late in the third quarter Burbank had the ball at the Arcadia 7-yard-line. But the Bulldogs fumbled the ball away.
Arcadia countered on its first play after the turnover by nearly scoring as Dylon Larsuel broke off on a 42-yard that was only stopped thanks to a diving tackle by Powell who was the last man Larsuel had to beat.
The turning point came on the third play of the fourth quarter as Nick Franco intercepted Maldonado and broke Arcadia’s momentum.
Powell scored on a 4-yard run on fourth down with 7:02 to play to finally make Burbank feel comfortable.
Burbank’s Jake Ferrat forced Maldonado to fumble on Arcadia’s next drive, resulting in a turnover as Jacob Mendieta recovered.
With the momentum in its favor, Rony Preza ran right up the middle to score on a 28-yard run with 6:42 to play. This made it 34-12.
Arcadia did rally to cut Burbank’s lead to a pair of touchdowns. But Robinson finished the night with a 7-yard run with 1:26 to play.
Burbank will face Crescenta Valley next Friday at Glendale High’s Moyse Field.

The Burbank community is celebrating the spirit of the holiday season with a map display of local Halloween decorations and events.

Burbank resident Jen Spincic created the Halloween Decorations Map last year to identify decorative Burbank Halloween locations for residents looking to celebrate the holiday safely during the pandemic. As she is a mother to a young child, Spincic wanted to do something to spread Halloween fun throughout the city and celebrate the creativity of Burbank locals.

“I just started realizing how many cool decorations we have here in Burbank because we have so many people here in the entertainment industry, and we have such a cool community when the holidays start,” Spincic said.

The map quickly gained a strong amount of traction regionally, with a total of over 170 houses being added to the map by neighbors and community members leading up to Halloween. In addition, the map received over 17,000 online views. The popularity of the map prompted Spincic to expand the project and introduce sites with decorations throughout the winter holiday season in November and December of 2020.

“People loved it so much because they were out and about. Families would go out, [people would] go on date nights and just go look at all the Halloween decorations everywhere,” Spincic said. “It’s really cool. It’s just an awesome way to bring the community together and have some fun.”

For the 2021 holiday season, Spincic has reintroduced the map, and this new iteration will include local and regional Halloween events and pumpkin patches in addition to Halloween decoration destinations. Thus far, over 100 houses are listed on the map, as well as 51 events and 10 pumpkin patches. Community members are welcome to contribute photos and videos of events and locations online, as well as sites they feel would be beneficial additions to the map.

The decorations map operates under a Facebook group also started by Spincic in the fall of 2020, called the Holidays in Burbank Facebook group. This family-friendly online club is welcoming to all people who are interested in conversing about holiday celebrations, decoration ideas, festive arts and crafts, and more. Around 1,500 members make up the group, and nearly 500 members are joining weekly as the holidays are fast approaching. The success of the Facebook group and Halloween Decorations Map continues to fulfill Spincic’s mission of spreading happiness to families, friends, and loved ones seeking out an enjoyable time for the holidays.

“It just makes me happy to make other people happy,” Spincic said. “It’s been a crazy last couple of years. Just the thought that people can actually go out and have some fun and forget about all the stuff that we’re going through right now, it feels really good just to make other people happy and bring joy into their lives.”

After encountering an armed resident who failed to comply with officers, Burbank was forced to call out their Swat unit to deal with the situation.

According to Sgt. Emil Brimway of the Burbank Police Department “Monday night, October 11 at about 8:43 pm, officers were dispatched to an unknown problem in the 3800 block of West Victory Blvd. Prior to their arrival, the victim told dispatch that her neighbor broke into her residence through a shared closet wall. Upon officers’ arrival, they located the suspect who dropped what appeared to be a rifle on the ground in his apartment. The suspect then barricaded himself inside his apartment.

Officers immediately evacuated the victims and nearby neighbors.” They also surrounded the property and stopped traffic on Victory Blvd.

Officers at the scene tried to talk to the man, identified by police as 34-year-old Robert Lambert from Burbank, who had exited the apartment to talk to officers. He soon ran back inside and barricaded himself in.

“Detectives, SWAT and Crisis Negotiator Team (CNT) personnel were called out to the scene. For several hours, CNT personnel continually made contact with the suspect. The suspect was continually asked for compliance and to peacefully exit the residence.

Police used both their Bearcat and also Glendale’s so that had coverage at both the front and back of the apartment. Both departments also deployed their K-9 units to the scene.

At about 2:30 a.m., a search warrant was executed at the suspect’s residence. Due to the fact that the suspect had committed a violent felony and officers had observed a rifle inside his residence, SWAT personnel deployed flash bangs and CS gas. The suspect then exited the residence and was taken into custody without further incident. “

Brimway also noted that the investigation is still on-going.

Lambert was arrested and booked for 646.9(a) PC – Stalking and 459 PC – Burglary, and is being held on $150,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court for his arraignment on 10/14/2021.

Known as Larry Stamper by most, he was also proud to be called Brother Luv and Poppy by his family and friends. He was born to Minerva and Norman Stamper on May 23, 1935, in the small town of Muncie, Indiana. Larry was the youngest of six children, two girls, and 4 boys, all of whom pre-deceased him.

Larry Stamper

Larry graduated from Helix High in La Mesa in 1953, received a BA from Point Loma College in 1958, and in 1965 received a Master’s Degree from the Claremont School of Theology. In 1992 he was bestowed an honorary Doctor of Letters from Woodbury University.

He lived most of his childhood in the San Diego area where he met his late wife, Marilyn “Sue” Colvin. Larry and Sue were married in 1955 and began their ministry in the Church of the Nazarene in Orange California.

Larry left the Nazarene Church in the early ’60s and began his journey with the
United Methodist Church starting as an Associate Pastor in South Pasadena. He also served as Pastor for the congregations of Knollwood and Crescenta Valley until he landed at Burbank First United Methodist Church in 1972.

In Burbank, they raised their three children, Jeanette, Jimmy, and Judie, who have given them eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Larry faithfully served Burbank for 32 years, which was an unheard-of timeframe in the ministry, and a sincere blessing for him and the congregation.

Anyone who had the pleasure to meet Larry knew he had an endless number of stories to share. He had an amazing storytelling gift and used his stories to teach, provide meaning and understanding, and inspire all of us who had the pleasure of listening.

Larry and Sue lived their lives proudly serving the Burbank community for almost 50 years. Larry served on the Board of Directors of Wesley Homes Inc., Burbank Community Hospital, Gene Autry Foundation, and the Metropolitan Water District. He was a past member of the Burbank Kiwanis Club, Chaplain for the Burbank Police Department and was honored to serve on the Burbank City Council, serving as Mayor in 1983-84.

Out of all the stories he told, his life was the most poetic of them all. He once said that he was the richest man on earth because of all the beloved people he was surrounded by. He never measured life by how much money he had or what kind of car he drove. Instead, he experienced the world around him by sharing and receiving love from everyone who walked into his life.

Larry was the most selfless man because he did not live his life for awards or status, but rather to form unbreakable bonds with those he loved. Larry was on his way to his happy place in Spain when he closed his eyes peacefully and forever. God blessed him with the opportunity to spread his message of love at every stage in his life. As a husband caring for his wife Sue and later his companion Lynda McCourry, as a father caring for his children, as a grandfather/great-grandfather caring for his grandchildren/great-grandchildren, as a pastor spreading the word of God to his congregation, and most of all as a light that will forever shine down on this earth.

Larry Stamper

Larry was not easily forgettable, he left an impression on everyone he met. His heart was filled with love and kindness and he had a sense of adventure! His life story is a lesson we all need to learn, live your life to the fullest, do the things you love with the people you love, and share your love with everyone you meet!

A celebration of life for Larry will be held on Saturday, November 13th at 2:30 PM at the Burbank First United Methodist Church, 700 North Glenoaks Blvd., Burbank CA 91502.

Larry loved the Burbank community with all his heart and shared his love with many Burbank charities. In lieu of flowers, here are a few he would love to have donations be made in his memory:
