The idea:

Leveraging the power of the Internet paired with the genius behind crowd funding superstar kickstarter.com to save the work horse of yesteryear…the old barn.

I have always had a soft spot for old barns, not just any old barns, the old barns that are slowly falling down due to their complete abandonment. The barns that you can just feel were the work horse of a farming era gone by. In their prime they were the center of attention, all farm related activity took place in and around their mighty walls and secure roof. But now because of changes in the basic economy of local farming & ranching, these barns are now just slowly crumbling before our very eyes.

I started following kickstarer just recently when a friend shared a project she was developing through the site. I was immediately consumed, it was like a spell. Just average everyday people backing ideas that they think matter. I found myself finding and backing projects and before I even realized it I had spent a ridiculously huge block of time immersed with all the different projects and stories to be found.

Within 24 hours the idea to save a barn hit me. I thought “could I really use this to back my love of barns?” I had an idea for years to take old barns and repurpose the materials into amazing furniture, but the scale always stopped me in my tracks. I would have to purchase a barn, dismantle, ship and warehouse the material and then after investing tens of thousands of dollars I would have to begin the process of selling the furniture…and with the amount of material that is in a barn, that would be A LOT of furniture.

Now enter kickstarter and crowd funding! By leveraging the web I can create a community of backers that will basically pre-buy furniture from my barn and when the demand is large enough and the project hits its goal, gets funded and everybody wins!

Who would have ever thought that a 3 year old Internet startup would be helping a 100 year old barn find new life, the new helping the old.

And if the kick ass beer wasn’t enough…it just happened to be 70 degrees and amazing in Sonoma today (yes Feb 21st)…we should all bow our heads again to the beer Gods…

Thanks to Russian River Brewery and to HopMonk for bringing some extra sunshine to this kick ass day…oh ya, the keg went dry in 2 hours flat!!
