Caltrain, however, allows food and drinks. I happened to be heading back up to the city this morning, I was hungry, and the new-ish La Bamba was right on the way to the train station.

I ordered my super al pastor, got it in three minutes, chucked it into my backpack, and made my train on time. The car was crowded - they were playing the Kentucky Derby at Bay Meadows, and Maker Faire is on - so I had to sit up top in a cramped seat. No matter - delicious pastor and liberal doses of guacamole make up for most problems. I'll be doing this again, oh yes.

How does that happen?), and feelings of general self-loathing due to a bunch of scheduling mistakes I've made and overwork as I try to finish grad school in the next three weeks. I stalked into El Castillito to improve my mood. I was a little worried because their beans looked abnormally pale, but my worries were unfounded. It's burritos like this that help a guy quell the bedtime demons.

On the way up to start the hike, we'd noticed a new addition to the scene in the tiny hamlet of Davenport: the friendly door of Taqueria El Jarro.

The girl behind the counter was duly impressed with the Burritophile shirt that Burritoeater was wearing (don't ask - we don't like to pimp our own sites), and I was duly impressed by the titanic super al pastor they put down on my plate. Surely not?

Well, it did. I went into a sit-down Mexican restaurant and ordered a burrito instead of tamales or enchiladas. I always think, "heck, they're charging eight bucks for it, so it must be pretty good, right? And I get tortilla soup!"

Wrong. I arrived at 8:30, and the line of people waiting patiently to get in was around the block. White, Hispanic, Asian, Black, young, old. Families with their kids in strollers. Earnest couples with loan documents in the original Countrywide or WaMu folders. By 10:30, the auditorium was filled with maybe 200 folks waiting for their number to be called for a chance to talk to a loan servicer and maybe keep their home...and the line of people waiting patiently to get in was still around the block. Heartbreaking.

There were two high points in an overwhelmingly tough day:

1. A husband and wife high-fiving each other in the parking lot after talking to a loan officer. I asked them what had happened, and they told me, "We worked it out! We're going to keep our house!"

2. I had a burrito.

Even if you never go there, you owe it to yourself to read eScooter's fantastic review, so click on through to the other side. Somehow, burrito fixin's are less expensive once you get out of the 95816, as my super was only $5.50 instead of the $6.10 charged at the sister joint. I guess guys with fauxhawks and snide screened t-shirts are at a different price point than construction workers and families.

Anyway, I got it to go and ate it on a front porch with a bottle of SLO IPA, ASAP. Somehow, they neglected to put in much guac, which is the same criticism I've always had. Gosh--do they not read the reviews here? Can they really pretend to not know about Burritophile, unstoppable redundant juggernaut among internet burrito sites?

Other than that, fantastic. I went with a wet carnitas from Charros on Friday night, and was pleased to see that the newish staff (for the first time in forever, nobody recognized me when I walked in the door. An outdoor table, a local paper, a glass of cold water, and the best al pastor in the business. A scientific Google Map and how-many-footsteps-did-you-count study found that the line stretched a quarter mile.
Why put themselves through an hour wait for a sub-par burrito? The best thing about the burrito was the blackbird that flew in the door and watched me while I ate. I have found that burritos are best when they are allowed to mellow for a short period of time. Usually 5 to 15 min. I was wondering if anyone else has considered this. I usually buy my burritos to go and eat them at home or the office, usually just a few minutes away. Whenever I eat the burrito right away it usually doesn't taste as good.

That's a really good question. I've found that the waiting factor (like so many things) depends on the place. If a burrito is almost too hot to eat, waiting a few minutes can be a good idea - especially since the heat can suffuse the slab during the downtime and melt any stray shreds of still-solid cheese (La Bamba comes to mind here). But if the burrito is served at optimum-eating temperature, a wait could conceivably hurt by banishing your burrito to the Land of the Lukewarm.

What does everyone else think? Do you chow down right away or let 'em breathe for a few?

Solid burrito work that suffered from some cold spots and some very tough-to-find guac. However, their al pastor is pretty darned awesome, and I always appreciate taquerias that put out little bins of cilantro and onions.

Why aren't there little bins of cilantro and onions on every street corner? This one is called " Do You Prefer a Taco or a Burrito? The Mexican Food You Choose Can Help You Find Love and Predict Your Personality."

Um, right. This is what the study says about us burrito-eatin' folk:

Burrito lovers are dramatic and love being the center of attention. They crave novelty, excitement and stimulation, and are seductive and flirtatious in romance and gregarious, witty, and charming in social situations. Neither shy nor subdued, they readily display their emotions. At work they are easily bored with usual routines and have a keen sense of new and up-and-coming trends. Some examples of burrito-loving personalities include: Owen Wilson as Dupree in You, Me and Dupree, Tony Sirico as Tony Soprano in The Sopranos, Annette Benning as Carolyn Burnham in American Beauty, and Michel Serrault as ZaZa Napoli in La Cage aux Folles. Burrito lovers are romantically compatible with everyone.

I think they forgot one important thing. Burrito lovers are Gods who will eventually rule the world. Why'd they forget that?

Read the whole release here, if you so desire.

Ordinarily I wouldn't be caught dead at Hobson's, given the number of recently-graduated Stanford Sigma Chis who hang out there six days per week. Happily, the Monday after Super Bowl Sunday seems to be a slow night for the white-hat brigade.

My burrito was just ok, even after I'd asked the happy burritomaker to add extra onions and cilantro. Steam-tray asada, not-much-there guac, and unremarkable beans, all for over eight bucks. Eight bucks? When I started in this burrito game, we'd get paper change from a Lincoln for lunch.
