Hi, been a while since we had a chance to touch base with you... We hope you and your family are safe and healthy! We know that each of us have been impacted differently by this pandemic, and want you to know that we are here if you need/want to talk...

This past year, while we haven't been able to perform live shows, Gary has utilized his time writing new songs... he has amassed quite a few (over 50) and is now in the process of fine tuning them so he can choose which to record on his next album. He has also used this down time to attend to some health issues, such as getting the much needed surgery on his left hand (the one that goes on the guitar's fret board) to repair the carpal tunnel issues that had gotten bad. He had the surgery at the beginning of February 2021, and is quickly on the mend.

Trudi (the band's assistant, and Gary's wife), has created a bunch of fun new merchandise for you to check out, featuring some of her original paintings about some Bushmaster songs, and Gary's guitar playing... Check out all the fun new things, shirts, bags, mugs, pillows, etc... (including some fun things featuring the painting above "Playing With Light")

Bushmaster featuring Gary Brown had the pleasure of performing at Clyde's Willow Creek, Ashburn, VA on Friday 3/13/20. When other musicians have had their shows cancelled due to the virus scare, we feel blessed to have been able to perform, and thank those who worked at the venue for providing a clean environment, both for us, and for those who came out to support live music... we appreciate you!!!

This show had an extra layer of fun for Gary, as he got to use his new "Leona Amplification" pedal that was created by our friend Vanja Tubic. I have been away from home for a month, so I hadn't gone through my mail. But I found this treasure in the pile of the usual crap; 'Dancing in the Belly of the Beast". I finally had a chance to listen to Brother Gary's amazing new album. I can't remember the last time I heard such an incredible record.

It's as close to perfection as an artist is likely to get.

This puts Gary and Bushmaster in the big league- where he/they belong.

Maybe the most outspoken Blues musician in our area, his best quality. You never have to wonder he'll just say it. I heard he came from Palmer Park where we lived for 16 years. I grew up in Southeast I don't know why or how but I can really relate to Gary. I love building bridges with musicians. After a while of watching Gary I decided to meet him. Gary is the one knife you never need to resharpen whether it comes to his music or his commentary. He writes and performs his own music. One of my favorite fun things to do is riding the Harley and I found out Gary was performing at a Harley dealership in Woodbridge Virginia. Blues and motorcycles combined with barbecue, it doesn't get better than that. I jumped on the motorcycle and headed to Woodbridge on a beautiful summer day. The band sounded great I walked around looked at motorcycles and had some barbecue while they played. I eventually introduced myself and he greeted me with a big smile. When it came time for him to go back on his Bass player wasn't on the stage I was standing there so Iasked Gary if I could play he said "yes". We started and he smiled I didn't know why but I was in the wrong key, primarily cause I was so excited to be up there quickly corrected that and off we went. The Bass player came running to the stage and I handed him his ax and sat walked to the side and started to listen. A couple of songs later Gary who plays wireless was walking through the crowd and he hands me the guitar. I start to play and wow, what fun. I handed it back, what great afternoon with this guitar hero. He really made me feel great. When I see his post and he goes in hard I am cheering him on. Great song writer guitar player and never afraid to speak his mind. Works for me

Mushroomis a funky rocker heavily influenced by Jimi Hendrix's "Purple Haze" with psychedelic and funky guitar skills. The text here is hilarious: "why did you treat me like a mushroom baby, you left me all alone in the dark".
40 Acres And A Mule was what the Negro slaves were promised after the abolition of slavery. At Bushmaster this song is more about "getting what you are promised" in a driving shuffle with flaming guitar work. Then Army Of Two is a lazy shuffle with light Sam Cooke ("Twistin 'The Night Away") influences. Daniel Weston Cohen enters with his carving slid guitar in Elevator in which the Bo Diddley beat enters into a “Sittin 'On Top Of The World” -like blues melody. Pressure Cookeris a very fat grooving Meters-like funk song with languid soulful vocals and a pumping driving organ. Gary's guitar playing can be described as very loud and smoldering in songs like The Blues and Nowhere To Stand .
The album is closed very intimately with the gently shuffling Thing Back Home .

Bushmaster has delivered a very pleasant and versatile soul blues album!

"...Stirring in a bit of funk on Ajax And Hot Wax, brown doesn't sound like Wolfman or JGW but you can hear the influence. A real nice floating guitar solo by Brown in this track reinforces the overall coolness of the track. Slow blues number, Nowhere To Stand, has a smooth bass driven bottom with distorted guitar lead under contemporary lyrics and a strong organ line. Miss Sexy Fine is a funky rocker with a flavor of Jimi. Fan style rhythm guitar playing and solid lead guitar playing by Brown is spicy. One of my favorites on the release is Elevator, a cool blues rocker along the lines of Sitting on top of the World. “Dancing In The Belly Of The Beast”
Bushmaster Blues featuring Gary Brown

First off, this is a stupendous Rhythm&Blues album. You’ll find a more than full serving of knife edge blues, all spilling from this Prospect Park, VA Bluesman and his cast of thousands*, but you’ll find so very much more than that... There’s nods to the quintessential D.C. artform known as go-go music, there’s dips and dabs of jazz and buckets of soul, and there’s enough absolutely acid wah guitar to satisfy the staunchest Hendrixian, but there’s still more...

There’s a wealth of emotion in the 14 tracks here, from the opening bounce of the lead-off “Profile”, which juxtaposes the rolling, constant riff and the lovely strains of the background vocalists with the absolutely crushing subject matter of the song. The lyrics follow suit, using the phrase “profile in courage” as a well-schooled buttress against the racial profiling that has proliferated in the country for the last ever how many years it’s been since you noticed it going on (because honestly, that’s the only time something seems to really become a problem, right? When we notice it’s happening, THEN it’s an issue, right??...but I digress)...

All the way through to the closer, “Thing Back Home”, a wildly unexpected countryish shuffle, with a solo that you’d swear came from a Gretsch Country Gentleman with a great big smoking “G” brand fresh on its face.
(Trust me, you really, REALLY want to hear the story on this one. It’ll make you grin, even through this current 4 years...*hint hint*)

All along the way, there are tons of standout music, miles of standout wordplay, and the way they work together is just too damn good to ignore.

There’s “Ajax and Hot Wax”, itself a mid-tempo rocker that one could easily hear covered by Buddy Guy. A song for bad love, or maybe rejected love is a better way to put it, it sells the story of that love (or possibly the absence of the same) very well. The breakdown in this song alone is worth twice the price of the full album! Another stellar solo cuts through the mix, bringing everything together into a great roux.

There’s “Elevator”, which is absolutely lush in its duality. In one of the truest blues staples, it’s meant to let you know right quick that a knife cuts both ways. Or as stated here, “an elevator goes two ways.”
It’s succinct and pointed, and it damn well should be...

That’s maybe the greatest thing about this blazing record, that it just refuses to lie to you. And I mean repeatedly, just an absolute refusal to turn its gaze from the truth...
That’s a truly rare thing in any media, much less the pure enjoyment of music...
The truth, writ large.

On that note, there’s “Song For Freddie Grey”, a track that opens with the regimented rhythm of a battery, drumming out the rhythm. The song speaks to a nationwide issue of police militarization towards folks who don’t look like them, to the point of outright murder in the streets. The song is a cold water slap in the face, grounding the listener in the same things the artist faces on the daily...
The difference being that the listener can always take their headphones off.

That got me to thinking about something.
We are better as individuals and better as a community when we are more well-informed, more well read. We are better as a society when we get out of our own personal bubbles and know and learn more, far beyond the confines we’ve declared for our own horizons.
Gary Brown does his damnedest to bring us some of that, with fantastic guitar playing and serious singing, and arrangements that are always on point...
What I’m saying is just this:

Your enjoyment of this record...of ANY record, for that matter, will only be heightened by a more well-informed mind. On this disc in particular, you really rob yourself if you miss the references that Gary Brown drops all over this one. Trust me, you want to know what he’s speaking of!!

I’m going to give you a few of my exceptional pieces, but you’ll find other things to love about this album.
(You can tell I did. These are my favorites at the moment, after a dozen pretty in depth run throughs...give me 48 hours, and I’m certain they will at least be in a different hierarchy of favoritism, probably joined by one or two more..or more. This record just doesn’t have clunkers. That’s such a good thing!)

Personal Favorites: 40 Acres and a Mule, Song for Freddie Grey, Ajax and Hot Wax, Profile, Jekyll and Hyde

Recommendation: Buy This Album. Brother Gary sent me a reviewer’s copy, but I’m proud to say I bought a Digital Copy.
*- that “cast of thousands” I spoke of contains every musician putting in work, every real-life person being sung about, and every last listener who’ll surely turn a friend on to this album, too.

Bushmaster - Dancing In The Belly Of The Beast - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Dancing In The Belly Of The Beast, from Bushmaster and it's an interesting blues rocker. Opening with Profile, a straight up shuffle featuring Gary Brown on lead vocal and guitar, Justin Kimball on bass, Justin Pinkney on drums, Tim McDonald on keys, Tracy Nelson and Vickie Carrico on backing vocals this track has a solid vocal bass line and full gospel like backing vocals. Stirring in a bit of funk on Ajax And Hot Wax, brown doesn't sound like Wolfman or JGW but you can hear the influence. A real nice floating guitar solo by Brown in this track reinforces the overall coolness of the track. Slow blues number, Nowhere To Stand, has a smooth bass driven bottom with distorted guitar lead under contemporary lyrics and a strong organ line. Miss Sexy Fine is a funky rocker with a flavor of Jimi. Fan style rhythm guitar playing and solid lead guitar playing by Brown is spicy. One of my favorites on the release is Elevator, a cool blues rocker along the lines of Sitting on top of the World. Brown lets the dog off the leash on guitar with some freewheeling guitar that soars...really! Wrapping the release is an easy stated country style folk tune, Thing Back Home, with Tim Jones on acoustic guitar and Brown on lead vocal and a short finger picked guitar solo. With its simple but catchy melody, it's a solid closer for an enjoyable release.
