Cambridge Weight Plan

History

The story of Cambridge Weight Plan starts in the UK in early 1960′s when Dr Alan Howard developed an interest in overweight and obesity. He began to investigate methods of weight reduction, using himself as one of the guinea pigs.

Together with Dr Ian McLean-Baird of the West Middlesex Hospital, Dr Howard organised a National Symposium on Obesity in 1968, the first ever held in the UK. They went on to collaborate and develop what they regarded as ‘the perfect diet’. What they wanted to achieve was a formula food with:

• the right level of protein to protect lean tissue
• the right level of carbohydrate to promote a mild ketosis and eliminate a sense of hunger
• the right levels of vitamins, minerals, trace elements and essential fatty acids to maintain good health

After much work, Dr Howard’s first formula produced excellent weight loss results, and further work by food technologists enhanced flavours and led to the first commercial version of the Cambridge Diet. Eight years of research and clinical trials at hospitals such as Addenbrookes in Cambridge, Charing Cross and Guys in London and at the Universities of Swansea, Leeds and Liverpool then followed to ensure that the Diet underwent rigorous testing to establish its efficacy and safety.

These studies demonstrated three important factors:

• remarkable weight loss
• patient acceptability and
• patient safety

…and led to the Diet becoming more available in obesity clinics in London and Cambridge, UK. Long-term safety was assessed and confirmed by further independent research in the UK, the USA and across Europe.

The Cambridge Diet was launched commercially in the USA in 1980 (under a licence agreement) and in the UK in 1984.

In 2009 the Cambridge Diet underwent a re-branding process and was re-named Cambridge Weight Plan.

Cambridge Weight Plan today

The modern Cambridge Weight Plan is a nutritionally balanced formula food, which provides essential micro- and macro-nutrients and can be used as a complete substitute for normal food or in conjunction with a sensible eating plan.

Cambridge 800

In Spain Cambridge Weight Plan is sold under the company’s Cambridge 800 brand.

This is a nutritionally balanced low calorie diet that can be used as the basis of several Steps or eating plans, ranging from 800 calories (kcal) up to 1500 kcal and then into long term weight management. Each Cambridge 800 serving (sachet, bar or soup) is around 200kcal. Cambridge 800 offers a number of flexible weight loss programmes. These are:

Step 1 (800kcal) – There are two options on this Step. One is a total diet replacement* where someone can replace their entire daily conventional food intake with four Cambridge 800 servings. The other option is that they use three Cambridge 800 servings and add a 200 kcal healthy meal (protein rich with vegetables).

Step 2 (1000kcal) – This combines either three Cambridge 800 servings with 400kcal of protein rich food and 150ml of skimmed milk or two Cambridge 800 servings, a 600kcal meal, 150ml of skimmed milk and fruit.

Step 3 (1200kcal) – On this Step someone can have two Cambridge 800 servings and 800kcal of healthy cooked food incorporating breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as 150ml of skimmed milk and fruit.

Step 4 (1500kcal) – This offers two Cambridge 800 servings with 1100kcal of healthy cooked food (breakfast, lunch and dinner) or one serving of Cambridge 800 with 1300kcal food options.

Step 5 (My Life) – This is long term weight management which can incorporate a Cambridge 800 servings as part of a balanced, healthy diet.

On Steps 1–4 a person should drink at least 2.25 litres of water spread over the course of the day.

Products

Cambridge800 comes in a range of products. The shake serving is 202kcal, the soups are 209kcal per serving and the bars are 202kcal each. Flavours include: (Shakes) Banana, Chocolate Mint, Strawberry, Chocolate, Summer Fruits and Vanilla. (Soups) Mushroom and Vegetable; (Bars) Lemon or Strawberry and Apple.

Consultants

As with the UK, Cambridge 800 is only available via an Independent Cambridge Consultant. As well as supplying the products, these self-employed people offer help, support and advice to customers throughout the Steps process as well as long term weight maintenance.

Research

Cambridge Weight Plan is one of the most researched weight management products in the world. Extensive research on nutritionally complete low and very low calorie diets has confirmed their safety and efficacy in assisting weight loss and weight maintenance.

Many studies have been carried out into the effects of very low calorie diets. One of the most sophisticated was a clinical trial that examined body composition and metabolic studies with VLCDs. The results of the trial were presented in a book: ‘The Swansea Trial’ edited by Dr Stephen Kreitzman and Dr Alan Howard (1)

In 2011 research in Denmark has shown that people using Cambridge products not only show impressive weight loss results and improved nutritional status but also improvement in their knee osteoarthritis (2).

Also in 2011, researchers at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden demonstrated the effective weight loss benefits of Cambridge products for people with obstructive sleep apnoea (3).

One of the UK’s most successful weight loss programmes – Cambridge Weight Plan (CWP) – has arrived in Spain, under the Cambridge 800 brand.

Cambridge Nutritional Foods SL, based in Mijas, offers four flexible weight loss programmes ranging from 800kcal – 1500kcal per day as well as a long-term weight management programme.

A2)    Yes, the cars come with 6 months guarantee (when the contact period begins).  This can be     extended if required, for peace of mind.

Q3)    Are the cars in good condition?

A3)    All vehicles have any bumps and scrapes repaired prior to being transferred to “Rent to Own”.  If     you are happy with the “as is” condition of the vehicle, we can reduce the price accordingly.

Q4)    Who pays for the transfer of title as this can be quite expensive?

A4)    Transfer of title is included in the total amount payable.

Q5)    Who pays for the insurance?

A5)    The contract holder pays for the insurance.  This must be with the Arrow Cars provider to ensure the     vehicle is insured correctly during the Rent to Own contract.  Our rates are competitive.  We can     include the insurance payments in the monthly fees if you prefer.  Please ask for details.

Q6)    Who pays for maintenance etc?

Q7)    Can I test drive the car before signing a “Rent to Own” contract?

A7)    Yes, of course.  If you are still not sure, why not “Try Before You Buy”.  Hire the car you are     interested in for 28 days (at the normal VaVaVroom!” rental rate). If you are happy with the car, Rent     to Own it and we will deduct one full month’s rental from the total to pay.

Almost three-quarters of firms and public sector organisations across nine European countries may not fully recover their computer systems or data after an IT failure, a survey suggests.
The report by IT group EMC said 74% were “not very confident” they could fully restore their networks.
It also found that 54% admitted they had lost data or suffered systems downtime in the past 12 months.
A total 1,750 IT bosses in countries including the UK were questioned.
The other countries covered in the survey were Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg and Russia.
EMC said firms needed to put more focus on backup and recovery systems.
