Part of Pinterest’s charm is the ease in which you pin.

Yet Pinterest schedulers are more like a quiz than a quick pin.

That is why I am IN LOVE with BoardBooster (affiliate link).

When you “schedule” a pin, you actually just pin it.

BoardBooster does this with secret boards that hold all your upcoming pins in a queue.  Once you have set up your secret board’s schedule, then all you have to do is pin {just like you would pin anytime} to those boards.

I am not even joking.

I have been using it for a month or so and it has CHANGED MY PINNING LIFE.

The cool thing is that the founder is really receptive to suggestions and has already made some changes that I asked for.  I really think the addition of days of the week should be labeled “Holly’s days of the week” because that idea was all mine…

Suddenly what was massive spreadsheets to show the flow of a pin can be created much more simply with the secret board schedule and then when I pin…I PIN.

Go, get it now.  Seriously.  You will be in love too.

Blogging for Profit Mon, 08 Dec 2014 22:44:23 +0000 When I started my blog, there were maybe 3 bloggers in the world making a living at it.

Thankfully that is no longer the case…and I am proof of that.

When I started my blog, there wasn’t blogging resources (especially for monetization).

Thankfully that is no longer the case…

Be A Social Media Resource Tue, 18 Nov 2014 13:25:06 +0000 So often we think about OUR social media channels as ALL ABOUT US.

They are mine!

Shouldn’t it be The Holly Show?

Sure!  But how boring is that going to be?  Realistically, I probably have 3 days worth of stellar social media content and then it will be back to posting what I had for lunch.

Not the best longterm plan for growing channels.

Tip from Social Media Examiner

This is why “using” the incredible content you find from colleagues, friends, fellow-bloggers and genius-content creators to build YOUR social channels is such a powerful tool.

They get traffic and an introduction to your followers.  Your followers give YOU credit for the resource and share it with your name attached.

It is the ultimate online karma machine.

New Blog Conference with a Mentorship Emphasis Mon, 03 Nov 2014 17:04:51 +0000 Finding that perfect blog conference for what you want to learn can be a challenge.  It seems like there are a lot of them…and some are very, very large.

If you are the type of learner that does better in small groups and likes to pick the brain of the instructor, then this might be the one for you…

The Focused Blogging Conference is being held July 23-25 in Richmond, VA.  There are a limited number of tickets…and I have heard through the grapevine that they plan on selling out early this week.

Which means if you are interested, you may want to buy now.

Why Focused?

This is going to be a small, intensive, hands-on experience.  The sessions are longer with mentors that will instruct for the first segment and then be available for questions and personal instruction.  Each session will have assistants which allows for a variety of views on a topic to learn what would REALLY work for your blog.

I am speaking.  I will be covering three topics – each session will be a 2 hour learning extravaganza:

  1. Wild Organic Facebook & Google+ Growth – Learn how to increase follower numbers in a way that builds a community that supports and grows your blog.  I will be assisted by Heather Greutman & Angela Thayer.
  2. Monetizing:  From Blog Hobby to Blog Business – Take your blog to the next monetization level through working with brands and maximizing what you already have built.  I will be assisted by Jamerill Stewart & Vicki Arnold.
  3. The Why & Hows of YouTube – How having an active YouTube channel can add value to your blog and sponsors.  I will cover basic strategies to building a channel, and why embedding video is good for content and SEO.  Dollie Freeman {conference founder} will be assisting.

I hope you will join in on the fun.  I have taught concentrated workshops like this before and they are always my favorite format because we can really chat about what is important to YOU and YOUR blog.  It is intense and I will need a nap afterward!  In fact, by the end of the time I can’t even string a complete sentence together which is always good for entertainment in itself.

Blogger Alternatives for the Keyword Tool Mon, 13 Oct 2014 13:50:08 +0000 Anyone who has been blogging for awhile probably has fond memories of the Google Adsense Keyword Tool.

I miss the keyword tool!

Way back when it was a really easy way to not only find a keyword phrase that fit what you were writing about, but it also was easy to find what the competition for that phrase might be.

Can Search Engines Find You - Business 2 Blogger

All that changed awhile ago and if you were like me, you just ignored the fact that it changed.

I tried to keep using it, but it just is awkward and sent me on rabbit trails that ended up in frustration and confusion.

What to Use instead of Keyword Tool

It is clear from all the recent roll-outs from Google that they are trying to get webmasters away from straight keyword identification in their text.  They are claiming that search engines have moved past that and I believe one of the reasons why the keyword tool changed was to start changing the hearts and minds of writers to think outside of a keyword or keyword phrase.

Fine!  I am all about progress…

Logistically, no matter how amazing a search engine might be, there is always going to be an element of keywords – the progress seems to be in how they are identified within context.  This will hopefully weed out those less-than-desirable sites that made it on keyword stuffing and crappy content.

But the bottom line is that we still need to know what people are searching for when they NEED to find our article!  Isn’t that the win-win of SEO?

One of the sites that I like for keyword suggestions is

The way Ubersuggest works is that it can give you ideas for WHAT people are typing in when they are looking for a certain keyword.  For instance, if I go to Ubersuggest and type in “blogger”, it is going to tell me the top terms associated with blogger are:

  1. blogger
  2. blogger templates
  3. blogger dashboard
  4. blogger vs wordpress
  5. blogger themes
  6. blogger help
  7. blogger search
  8. blogger sign in
  9. blogger blogs
  10. blogger backgrounds

Now, I happen to be wondering about “blogger conferences”, so none of those top keywords are going to point me in the right direction, but what Ubersuggest does next is then take my keyword and add each letter of the alphabet next to it to return the top searches.  Let’s move down to “blogger + c” for conferences…

  1. blogger conferences
  2. blogger custom domain
  3. blogger conferences 2014
  4. blogger camera
  5. blogger contact form
  6. blogger custom templates
  7. blogger css
  8. blogger collaborations
  9. blogger contact
  10. blogger css codes

If I then click on one of those…like the first “blogger conferences”, it will return more specific phrases:

Ubersuggest blogger plus c

I can keep narrowing down terms by clicking on any of those.  When I click on the second line “blogger conferences 2014″, it shows me the top 10 search terms that started with those words…and so on.

So, it isn’t giving me the number of searches or the ad revenue competition, but it is giving me a wide range of ideas within the phrase and the likelihood of them being searched in relation to other related terms.

Using Keywords in a New Search Environment

I use keywords like I would use a thesaurus.  Instead of repeating the same phrase over and over throughout a post {that is so 2011}, finding new ways to refer to the same or similar thing can not only help your article be more readable by an actual person, but it allows search engines to have a better understanding of the context of the post.

Context is the new black.

Think about as a pyramid.  Search engines see this site with the URL, “Business 2 Blogger” and so it makes sense that there would be things about both “business” and “blogger” on the site.  They then dig a little deeper into the blog and notice that many of the articles are speaking around words like “business” and “blogger” which makes sense to them because of the main URL.  Then think about how this article now has at least 20 keyword phrases related to the word “blogger”.  On my Kids Activities Blog, that wouldn’t be in-context – it would stand out because we never cover that type of information, but here at B2B, it all makes sense.

So, when someone searches for something in the realm of blogger business or something like that, the search engine can send them to B2B with relative certainty that the content is relevant.

Thinking in Layers

Are you writing about what you really write about?

I know that sounds weird, but at Kids Activities Blog, I noticed that for the first few months, I hadn’t even used the words “kids” and “activities” in the articles.  How would a search engine actually confirm that I write about kids activities if I don’t spell it out?

Put your content in context.  Make it easy for your readers.  Make it easy to be found.

Instagram & Giveaways Mon, 18 Aug 2014 17:14:22 +0000 Instagram is one of those platforms that I started using for personal reasons.  I just really liked it.

Instagram giveaways

I have been on it for awhile as seen by my over 500 posts – and really only a handful of those had anything to do with the fact that I am a blogger {you can find me as @Texasholly}.

As Instagram has grown in popularity, sponsors and my own competitive nature has started looking at follower numbers.

In the last month or so I have made a conscious effort over there in terms of increasing numbers and what I have found is that it is a bit different than other social networks I hang out on…of course!  Nothing these days is simple.

It is a weird thing that people on Instagram un-follow if you don’t post.  Oh, and they un-follow if you post too much.

I am not sure what the magic number is, but it is likely different for everyone based on their followers.

One thing I have had success with is giveaways.  Giveaways on Instagram are quick ways to increase numbers, but don’t get too attached to those new followers because they seem to un-follow in herds.  On one of the giveaways, I had lost nearly 1/3rd of my new followers within days.

Here are the three different giveaways that I have tried:

Group Instagram Follow – Blog-based

Instagram giveaway group

I have done this twice lately.  You can see my blog post on Kids Activities Blog for this Instagram Giveaway.

Basically, I have teamed up with a group of other bloggers and thrown money into a pot.  A widget like Gleam or Rafflecopter is used to have everyone’s Instagram profile included and each follow is an entry.  It grabs the attention of the readers you have on your blog who might be on Instagram.

The issue I have with this is that there is little actual Instagram interaction – I promoted it on Instagram, but it is awkward to send people to the blog from Instagram to enter.

I am not a fan of Instagram not allowing links.

Flash Giveaway on Instagram – Easy Partnering

Instagram Flash Giveaway

On this one, another account {@thedailymomapp} gave away one of our books with instructions to follow and tag.

I then posted a notice that it was happening and sent them her direction.

This was super easy and I picked up a few extra followers.

Flash Giveaway on Instagram – GroupRound Robin Giveaway on Instagram

This one is going on until tonight at 7 pm MT.  You can find it on my Instagram.

It is a group of IGers each throwing their own giveaway worth around $50 and sending IGers to the next through a tag on the photo {kinda genius, eh?}.  It is very similar to what I have participating in many times on FB.  While this one will likely end up adding a few less followers than the first one above, I love that it is ACTIVE IGers that see and follow.  To see that much interaction on my account just makes me smile.  My guess is that there won’t be as many un-follows either because the other participants run similar {albeit more beautiful} IG accounts.

What about you?  What has your Instagram experience been?  How have you increased your following?
