Saturday mornings in a typical Nigerian home?

Forget about sleeping in or having breakfast in bed. No, no, no. Saturday is officially Work and house cleaning day, and in my house, it’s a full-blown military operation. If you’ve ever been jolted awake by an early Saturday morning knock on your door, you already know what I’m talking about.

It all starts with my mother. She transforms into a drill sergeant overnight. The kind that doesn’t need a whistle or a megaphone—her voice alone will do the trick. “Are you still sleeping at this time?” she’ll shout, as if the world is ending and only chores can save it.

She doesn’t even bother knocking. She just flings the door open like someone with rent overdue. “Get up! Housework is waiting oooh, I am not traini ng lazy human being oooh!”

And so begins the Saturday Wahala.

First task? Sweeping. Now, sweeping on a normal day is fine, but on Saturdays? Forget it. Every nook and cranny must feel the wrath of the broom. And heaven help you if you sweep “like someone that doesn’t know what they’re doing.” There’s this special way Nigerian mums can tell you skipped a spot, even if they weren’t in the room. It’s like they have X-ray vision for dirt.

While I’m busy pretending not to hate sweeping, my younger sister is stationed in the kitchen, tackling the dishes and that dreaded pot that never seems to get clean. You know the one—the pot that’s been blackened by years of cooking on a kerosene stove. No matter how hard you scrub, it’s like the soot is part of the pot’s DNA. She’ll be there, muttering under her breath, “What exactly did we cook in this pot? Lava?”

Once the sweeping is done, it’s time to mop. Mopping is not just pushing water around the floor, oh no. It’s an art form. My mum slides her foot across the tiles, testing for any rough spots. If she feels even the tiniest bump, you’ll hear, “Is this how you mop? Do you think I’m blind, eh, you think I cannot notice the dirt there eh?”

By now, it’s around 10 a.m., and I’ve swept, mopped, taken out the trash, and I’m beginning to question my life choices. Why was I born into this family? Surely I was switched at birth with some rich kid who doesn’t have to mop?

Then comes laundry. Ah, Saturday laundry. It’s not just a pile of clothes, it’s a mountain. Everyone dumps their clothes into the same bucket, and suddenly, I’m standing in front of a hill of shirts, trousers, and that one pair of socks that’s been fermenting in someone’s shoes all week. Arggghh!!! The stench alone could send me to early retirement.

“Use enough soap o! Scrub well!” Mum yells from the kitchen, still battling her immortal pot.

Meanwhile, my dad is outside, acting like the overseer of all things compound-related. He’s washing the car, sweeping the compound, and trimming the plants as if we live in a palace. I’ll never understand why sand on the ground bothers him so much. “If you don’t sweep the sand, how will people know we’re clean?” he says with so much seriousness, you’d think the President was coming to inspect the house.

And then there’s my little brother, Tunde. He’s perfected the art of disappearing during chore time. He’ll vanish for hours, only to reappear just when the hard work is done, with an innocent face. “Ah, you people are working? I didn’t even know! What can I help with?” That Yeye boy, do not mind him.

At this point, we’re all too tired to fight. “Oya, come and wash the last bucket of clothes,” I say, knowing full well he’ll find a way to make the water dirtier than the clothes. Very lazy Gen Alpha, Mtcheeewwwww.

By noon, the whole house smells like soap, disinfectant, and hard work. My legs are aching, my hands are pruny from washing clothes, and I’m starting to see mops in my dreams. But there’s one silver lining in this storm of chores: the reward. FOOD

Around 1 p.m., the smell of akara frying fills the air. Ah, akara! Those golden, crispy bean cakes are the light at the end of the tunnel. Mum starts mixing the batter, and soon, the kitchen is filled with the sound of sizzling oil. Then, she adds hot pap to the mix, and I swear, all my stress melts away. Nothing beats biting into fresh akara while sipping thick, steaming hot pap after a long morning of backbreaking chores.

But just as I sit down to enjoy my well-earned meal, my mum comes out of nowhere. “Who left that window like that? Didn’t you see the dust? Go and clean it before you eat. Or you think I will not see it eh”

I look at her with the most exhausted eyes I can muster, wondering how one person can have so much energy for spotting dirt. But I know better than to argue. I stand up, clean the window, and finally sit down to enjoy my akara and pap.

By 3 p.m., the house is spotless, we’re all fed, and for the first time that day, there’s peace. We sit around, laughing at Tunde’s escape tactics, talking about the week, and pretending that next Saturday won’t be just as chaotic.

But we all know deep down—it will be.

The End

Kindly Follow me for More Stories.

Introduction
Of course, long-distance relationships can be wonderful as well as painful. So when you can’t hold hands, cuddle or even see each other in person, how do you prevent the spark from going out emotionally?

The good news? Intimacy isn’t just physical. Some long-distance couples even say they are happier with their partner, even if they are separated.

Whether you’re in a long-distance relationship (LDR) or not, you’ll most certainly relate to some of them with these proven LDR couple tips on keeping the intimacy alive and relationship energy flowing so you can also “Feels Like Home”—no matter how far apart you both are.

Know How To Say I Love You In Each Other’s Love Languages
Not everyone gets to feel loved in the same way. The 5 Love Languages are key for LDRs, too, according to Dr. Gary Chapman: Words of Affirmation, Acts of Service, Receiving Gifts, Quality Time, and Physical Touch.

Tip: Does your partner love words of affirmation? Try sending them a voice note every day. If they value quality time, set up recurring full-attention video dates (no multitasking!).

Put Aside Time for Connection That Matters
Regular check-ins are good — but deeper connection is better.

Designate a weekly “us” night where you do something fun together (watch a movie, play a game online, or visit a virtual museum).

Syncing up your calendars so you feel “present” in each other’s lives.

Use Technology Creatively
And technology makes staying close easier than ever:

Cook dinner “together” via video chat

Try apps like Couple, Love Nudge or Tuned

You should also share photo journals, playlists, or mood boards.

Tech tip: Have a shared Google Drive for letters, plans, or ideas for future trips.

Send Physical Tokens of Love
Digital is easy, of course, but physical reminders matter. Surprise them with:

A handwritten letter

A snack they liked the most in you country

Personalized photo gift or LDR bracelet

Affiliate angle: Promote Amazon or Etsy gift ideas for LDR couples.

Let Go Of Emotional Armour
Share emotions, not just updates. Discuss what you’re missing, your fears, your hopes. Vulnerability brings us closer to others.

Make Visits (or Plan to Meet in the Future)
It can be motivating to have something to look forward to in your relationship.

Plan virtual countdowns

Plan research trips together

Team talk about the future.

“Even if visits are not imminent and they don’t know when they will happen, by talking about them you have this common goal,” Dr. Call said.

Get Through the Tough Days With a Dose of Honesty
LDRs can feel lonely. And that’s okay.

Formulate a “bad day” rule: If you or he is feeling stressed or in need of space, you’re allowed to mention it. This creates trust and prevents unnecessary friction.

Healthy space = strong bond.

Conclusion
There’s more: Intimacy in a long-distance relationship isn’t just possible, but can be intense. With intention, creativity and emotional honesty, you can create a love that doesn’t just endure the distance, but makes it feel like the distance isn’t even there.

You got this.

As of April 2, European Union citizens must have Electronic Travel Authorization to enter the UK. Travelers from 48 other countries are also obligated to obtain this authorization.

Earlier, travelers from the EU hopped on a plane and simply showed themselves at passport control on landing. Now, travelers who don’t need a visa to enter the UK must first get pre-travel authorization. This is done via the new digital registration scheme.

Here’s what to know about the new rules.

Who needs an ETA?

Anyone who doesn’t need a visa to travel to the UK will need an ETA. It is an “electronic travel authorization” which pre-clears you for entry to the country before travel. This is the UK equivalent of the United States’ ESTA. It is a mandatory authorization to travel. Payment is required, and security clearance is done in advance.

The scheme debuted to Gulf Cooperation Council nationals in 2024. It was later rolled out to other non-European travelers. This includes the six million travelers from the US, Canada, and Australia who enter the UK each year. The full list of 48 states requiring the ETA is here.

Travelers from these countries have been obliged to have an ETA to enter the UK since January 8. EU citizens will need an ETA to enter the UK from April 2, 2025.

Citizens of these countries who are already resident in the UK do not need an ETA.

The scheme is for “short” visits to the UK of less than six months for tourism and business. There are a few other categories of ETA, including for short-term study and permitted paid engagements. These are listed on the UK government website.

Is it a visa?

Although some people are referring to it as a visa, it’s actually a visa waiver. Travelers whose citizenship means they need a visa to enter the UK will still need to apply for a visa. (They won’t, though, need to get the ETA on top of that.)

Countries work on reciprocity when it comes to immigration. In 2009, the United States introduced its ESTA visa waiver. It was inevitable that countries affected by this waiver would introduce similar schemes.

How do I get one?

The cost is currently a non-refundable £10 (just under $12.50), and you can apply through the official app listed on the UK government website, or directly online. The fee will increase to £16 (around $20) on April 9.

The apps — for iPhone and Android — boast of being quicker, with 10-minute processing times. Be sure to apply through official channels. Third-party websites may charge extra fees. They are also less likely to handle your data securely.

You will need to upload a photo of your passport. You should scan and photograph yourself as you apply. Then, upload the photo and answer various questions about your plans. Applying online takes around 20 minutes. You must complete the process in one go. There is no chance to save as you go.

A decision will normally be given within three days, though the government warns it could take longer. You can travel to the UK while waiting for your decision. If you need to visit urgently, you must have made the application before you travel.

Note that having an ETA doesn’t guarantee entry to the UK. You must still go through passport control. Border Force officials still have the final say over whether you can enter the country.

How long will it be valid?

Validity lasts for two years and multiple entries — so you can visit as often as you please. But, note that it will be digitally linked to your passport. If you get a new passport during those two years, it will no longer be valid. You must apply for a new one.

Even passengers transiting through the UK at the likes of Heathrow Airport will need an ETA. Chris Ratcliffe/Bloomberg/Getty Images

Can families get a joint ETA?

Everyone entering the UK needs their own ETA, including children and even babies. But you can apply on somebody else’s behalf.

Does this mean I can stay as long as I like?

The ETA is only intended for short stays of up to six months.

I’m just transiting through the UK. Do I still need the ETA?

Everyone entering UK soil, even for a quick onward connection, must have an ETA. (This is the same for any travelers transiting through the US, who need an ESTA.) You will not be allowed through passport control to the transit area without one.

Does this cover me to enter Europe, too?

To enter Europe, you’ll need an ETIAS — the EU travel waiver. This has been much delayed. It is currently slated to start some time in 2025. Stay tuned for details as the countdown approaches.

Venice, Italy: A City on the Brink©unsplash

Venice stands as a symbol of both breath-taking beauty and the dangers of over tourism. Each year, 25 million visitors crowd its fragile streets and canals. This number dwarfs its resident population of just 260,000. As a result, the city has reached a tipping point.

In 2024, authorities introduced a reservation system for day-trippers. It requires advance booking and an entry fee. This bold move has already cut daily visitor numbers by 30%. This change has given Venetians much-needed breathing space and has helped reduce strain on the city’s delicate infrastructure.

Increased fines for prohibited activities like swimming in canals or sitting on monuments have been strictly enforced. The city’s mayor has described these changes as “critical to protecting our cultural soul.” Balancing the economic benefits of tourism is critical. There is an urgent need to preserve Venice’s unique heritage. These priorities are now at the forefront of every policy decision.

The world watches as Venice tries to reclaim itself from the relentless tide of visitors.

Barcelona, Spain: Curbing the Tourist Tide©wikimedia

Barcelona’s magnetic appeal brought in over 12 million visitors in 2023—more than seven times its population. The influx has strained housing, transport, and even the spirit of the city.

To tackle this issue, the city council raised the tourist tax in 2024. They channeled the funds into public services and infrastructure directly affected by tourism. An official survey conducted in early 2025 found that 80% of Barcelona residents support stricter tourist controls. Many of them cite skyrocketing rents and crowded public spaces as major concerns.

The city plans to freeze new hotel licenses starting this year. This move is expected to slow down the rapid conversion of residential properties into tourist accommodations. The city champions sustainable tourism by incentivizing eco-friendly businesses. They have also expanded public transport to mitigate the negative effects of visitor numbers.

The hope is to foster a more harmonious coexistence. The city aims to ensure that Barcelona remains vibrant yet livable for all.

Amsterdam, Netherlands: A Shift in Focus©wikimedia

Amsterdam welcomed nearly 19 million tourists in 2023, a figure that has pushed the city to reconsider its tourism strategy. In 2024, city officials launched the “Enjoy & Respect” campaign. They encouraged visitors to discover lesser-known neighborhoods. This approach helps relieve pressure on the congested city center.

This policy shift is shown by the 15% reduction in tourist traffic in targeted districts over the past year. The municipality’s latest report confirms this change. Stricter regulations on short-term rentals were implemented. Authorities capped the number of nights properties can be rented out to visitors. Their goal is to combat the housing shortage that has plagued residents for years.

The city has invested in new infrastructure. It has also enhanced public services in outlying areas. These actions aim to better support this redistribution of tourists. Amsterdam’s mayor stated in a recent interview, “Our city is not a theme park—residents must come first.” The focus is now on spreading economic benefits while preserving the city’s unique charm and livability.

Dubrovnik, Croatia: Protecting Cultural Heritage©wikimedia

Dubrovnik’s historic Old Town drew over 4 million visitors in 2023. This large number has threatened the city’s infrastructure. It has also endangered its UNESCO World Heritage status. In response, the city council imposed a strict cap of 8,000 tourists per day within the Old Town walls. They enforce this through electronic ticketing and entry checkpoints.

This policy led to a 25% reduction in peak overcrowding during summer 2024, according to the city’s tourism office. Authorities have launched a comprehensive restoration program. It is funded by increased entrance fees. The goal is to repair damage caused by years of heavy foot traffic.

Infrastructure upgrades have been implemented to better manage the steady flow of visitors. These include new public toilets. Additionally, waste management has been improved. The success of these measures has been widely acknowledged both locally and internationally, with UNESCO officials praising Dubrovnik’s proactive stance.

Local residents have noticed a significant improvement in their quality of life. They have also experienced a renewed sense of pride in their city’s heritage. Dubrovnik’s mayor recently remarked, “We are determined to protect our past for the future.”

Machu Picchu, Peru: Balancing Access and Preservation©pixabay

Machu Picchu, a world-renowned archaeological marvel, welcomed over 1.5 million tourists in 2023, raising alarms about the site’s long-term preservation. In response, the Peruvian government introduced a new ticketing system in early 2024. This system limits daily entries to 2,500 people. This is a reduction from previous highs of over 5,000.

The change includes time-slot visits to better control the flow of people throughout the day. This approach also helps minimize wear on the ancient pathways. Conservation teams have ramped up restoration efforts, focusing on erosion control and structural repairs.

The government has also launched educational initiatives to inform visitors about the cultural and environmental significance of the site. Recent data from a 2024 survey indicates that 65% of tourists support these stricter controls. They understand the need to protect Machu Picchu for generations to come.

The measures have already resulted in reduced congestion and improved conditions around the site, according to park officials. The balancing act between access and preservation remains delicate but vital.

Santorini, Greece: A Fight Against Overcrowding©wikimedia

Santorini’s iconic whitewashed villages and blue-domed churches have attracted nearly 2 million visitors in 2023, overwhelming the island’s infrastructure. The dramatic spike in cruise ship traffic has been a particular pain point. As many as 18,000 passengers disembark in a single day.

In 2024, authorities introduced a strict reservation system for cruise passengers, capping daily arrivals at 10,000. This move has eased congestion in hotspots like Oia and Fira. Local officials report shorter wait times. There is also less crowding during peak hours.

Businesses are encouraged to incorporate sustainable practices. These practices include reducing plastic use and conserving water. This is part of a broader push for responsible tourism. A 2024 survey found that 75% of residents support these measures. They see them as essential for safeguarding the island’s unique character. They also recognize the importance of protecting natural resources.

The changes are also helping preserve Santorini’s appeal for future visitors, ensuring that its charm doesn’t become its undoing. The island’s approach is being closely watched by other Greek destinations facing similar challenges.

Paris, France: Balancing Tourism and Local Life©wikimedia

Paris is renowned for its art, fashion, and romance. It welcomed over 30 million tourists in 2023. Once again, it led the world as a must-see destination. Yet, the city’s residents have voiced growing frustration over congestion, noise, and rising rents linked to short-term rentals.

In 2024, the city council restricted the number of tour buses in central Paris. They targeted notorious traffic bottlenecks near the Eiffel Tower and Louvre. The initiative resulted in a 20% decrease in congestion, as confirmed by the city’s latest transport data.

Authorities have also increased their efforts to promote lesser-known neighborhoods. This helps spread tourist traffic more evenly and supports local businesses outside the main tourist zones. Public spaces are being improved. Expanded pedestrian areas and new green spaces are being developed. These efforts aim to enhance the daily experience for Parisians and visitors alike.

Resident feedback collected in early 2025 indicates widespread approval for these changes. Paris continues to evolve, determined to strike a delicate balance between global admiration and local well-being.

Thailand is a hugely popular destination for travelers from the UK. However, there is another country in Asia that many people say is even better.

Some holidaymakers believe there is a country that is arguably “better” for tourists than Thailand. It gets significantly fewer visitors. Thailand is a hugely popular travel destination for Brits. It is often the go-to for backpackers and those seeking a trip packed with culture and natural beauty. However, there are other countries in Asia with stunning beaches. These countries have friendly locals and amazing things to do. Some people say they might be even more worth your while.

It is made up of more than 7,000 islands. These islands offer stunning coastal scenery, highly-rated hikes, and nature experiences. There are many activities for tourists to do. They can also enjoy cheaper food prices than Thailand. This is according to Travel Authentic Asia. According to travel insurance providers Pacific Prime, the Philippines receives under 10 million tourists annually, dwarfed by Thailand’s 40 million. Thailand is often considered more expensive. Tourists search for an alternative to the popular Asian holiday destination. They look to the Philippines.

The European Court of Justice put an end to the golden passport program in Malta. On Tuesday, April 29, it ordered the country to stop the practice of exchanging citizenship for investment, reports Reuters.

The complaint to the EU court was filed by the European Commission. It demanded that Malta’s golden passport program be curtailed.

The program allowed wealthy foreigners to buy citizenship for an investment of about 1 million euros in the island’s economy. Obtaining a Maltese passport automatically opened up the possibility for them to live and work in any EU country.

Violation of EU law

The court ruled that this practice violates European Union law, so Malta must stop its further functioning.

In its ruling, the EU court noted that member states have the right to decide how to grant citizenship. They also have the right to revoke citizenship. But, the Maltese scheme undermines the principle of mutual trust between the bloc’s countries.

A member state can’t grant its citizenship, and thus EU citizenship, in exchange for certain payments or investments. After all, this essentially turns the acquisition of citizenship into ordinary commerce, the court said.

“Such a practice does not form the necessary bond of solidarity. It also does not create good faith between a member state and its citizens,” the court said. “It also does not guarantee mutual trust between the member states.”

Malta has repeatedly stated that its interpretation of EU legislation on citizenship is correct. After the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, the country suspended the golden passport program for Russian and Belarusian citizens but continued to grant citizenship to representatives of other nationalities.

Golden passports for Russians

Despite these statements by Malta, the Financial Times recently learned that some Russians who are on the EU and US sanctions lists because of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine have benefited from the golden passport scheme.

These new golden passport holders are part of a group of 16 people who have successfully acquired Maltese citizenship despite being subsequently sanctioned or convicted of crimes.

Airbnb announced Tuesday it is introducing Airbnb Services and Airbnb Experiences in a new, redesigned version of its app. This update will allow users to further personalize their vacations.

Airbnb Services offer a variety of options. Users can order them directly to their place of stay. The services include chefs, spa treatments, personal training, and professional makeup artists, among others. The feature will be launching with 10 service types across 260 cities. New offerings and locations will drop “regularly” in the Airbnb app, the company said in a news release.

Airbnb Experiences, on the other hand, will allow locals to host a variety of events. These events include trips to museums and landmarks, cooking classes, and outdoor experiences. This feature will launch in 650 cities around the world, with the company planning to add more every day.

“Seventeen years ago, we changed the way people travel. After hosting over two billion guests, Airbnb is now synonymous with a place to stay.” Brian Chesky, Airbnb co-founder and CEO, said this in the news release. “With the launch of services and experiences, we’re changing travel again. Now you can Airbnb more than an Airbnb.”

What services can I find on Airbnb Services?

According to Airbnb, users will be able to book services in the following 10 categories right at their Airbnb:

Chefs: Customizable in-home meals from professional chefs

Photography: Photo sessions from photographers

Massage: Restorative massages from certified therapists

Spa treatments: Facials, microdermabrasion, body scrubs, and other treatments provided by licensed estheticians

Personal training: Yoga, strength training, HIIT, and more, with personal trainers

Hair: Professional haircuts, blowouts, and more from stylists

Makeup: Makeup for every day or special occasions from professional makeup artists

Nails: Manicures and pedicures from nail specialists

Prepared meals: Ready-to-eat meals prepared by professional chefs

Catering: Full-service catering including menus, decor, and equipment, plus setup and cleanup.

Airbnb says its services are vetted for quality through an evaluation of “expertise and reputation.” Service hosts have an average of 10 years of experience. The company says the hosts have completed the company’s identity verification process. They are required to submit “relevant licenses and certifications.”

Services are available at “nearly every price,” the company said, and many services include an entry offering below $50.

“People choose hotels for their services. People choose Airbnbs for the space,” Chesky said in the news release. “Now, we’re giving you the best of both worlds − amazing homes with services that make them even more special.”

What experiences can I find on Airbnb Experiences?

The experiences are “hosted by locals who know their city best,” according to Airbnb, and include experiences such as:

Landmark, museum and cultural experiences

Food tours, cooking classes and dining experiences

Outdoors, water sports, and wildlife experiences

Gallery tours, art workshops, and shopping experiences

Workout, wellness, and beauty experiences

The company said experiences are “vetted for quality, with a focus on expertise, reputation, and authenticity.”

Also new are Airbnb Originals, which are “extraordinary experiences hosted by the world’s most interesting people,” the company said. These experiences include a pastry-making class with chef Raphaelle Elbaz. You can also enjoy an anime experience with Megan Thee Stallion. Alternatively, spend a Sunday with Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

“Today’s travel activities offer no real connection to the city you’re visiting,” said Chesky in the news release. “The most authentic way to explore a city is with the locals who know it best. With Airbnb Experiences, don’t just see a place − experience it.”

What else is new in the Airbnb app?

The company says it has “rebuilt the app from the ground up” so users can book everything in one place.

Airbnb says that after users book their homes, the app will suggest services and experiences. It will recommend options it thinks you will love. These suggestions will be based on where you’re staying and who you’re staying with.

The app now gives users a detailed itinerary upon arrival. This includes check-in details. It also shows a day-by-day view of everything you booked on Airbnb.

The company also says it rebuilt the app for hosts. It includes everything they need to manage their home, service, or experience.

The gates to British citizenship are open wider than ever – but can you walk through them? You might already be living in the UK, born in the country, or married to a Brit. Perhaps you are an EU national with pre-settled status. 2025 could be the year you finally become a British citizen. But how do you know if you qualify?

Here’s your thrilling, no-nonsense guide to checking your eligibility — and it might just change your life.

First, Ask Yourself: Which Route Fits You?

The UK government recognizes multiple pathways to becoming a British citizen. If you qualify under more than one, you get to choose the best route. These include:

Being born in the UK

Being married to a British citizen

Holding Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR)

Having Settled or Pre-settled Status

Having a British parent or grandparent

Falling under the Windrush or Chagossian Descendant categories

Let’s break it down.

When you were born

Whether your parents had legal UK status at that time

If You’re Married to a British Citizen…

But to apply for citizenship, you must wait 12 more months after receiving ILR

So if you got ILR in 2024, you may now be eligible in 2025!
