Gentle, yet sobering reminder as we mark the One-year tragedy in Oak Creek, Wisconsin..

As we mark the One-year anniversary of the beautiful lives that were taken at the Oak Creek Sikh Temple in Milwaukee last August, I am reminded how proud I am to be a Sikh and proud of the Oak Creek residents and its Temple community. I can't help but feel how much the story I am fighting to tell is so intertwined with this tragedy and other tragedies we've all witnessed recently. Just yesterday a Sikh Temple in Riverside was vandalized. The idea of identity in America is a vital conversation to have. What makes us American? Surely not because of the way we look, or how we practice our lifestyles... but more about how we can serve one another, learn from one another, embrace each other. When I visited the Oak Creek Temple recently this is what I experienced... gentleness, humility and courage.

As we wind down the AFM, I can gleefully report we had fruitful, positive responses to Suburban Turban. Potential sales and distribution looks strong and we're getting some great feedback. Overall, AFM was a great tool for us to gauge ST for the marketplace. We got a thumbs up and offers for further meetings.

I had a fantastic evening with Chantal and her co-hosts, Deja and Ryan at One Mic One Voice last night. The discussion was multi-layered and I want to acknowledge Brooke Jean, Poetic Force and his crew.. I enjoyed your words and meeting you. It's more and more clear that we keep talking about identity... the curiosity and passion from listeners was abundant. Suburban Turban has to be made. People are talking about this and want to know more. Suburban Turban promotes diversity, music, knowledge, it educates, it encourages tolerance -- and -- it's hip!

Suburban Turban has international resonance. It's themes are relevant in today's climate, but like any small film, in order to get our story out we have to continue to build awareness about the project.

The story of Suburban Turban deserves to be told in the public square, and in light of the recent tragedy in Oak Creek, Milwaukee where Indian-American Sikhs were recently targeted at their Temple and killed by a lone gunman, the issues of Identity and tolerance in our society are more vital and urgent than ever!

I arrived in my office again today with a heavy heart....

Seeing the images of the funeral arrangements on TV at Oak Creek took me back to when my father passed away, just a few years ago. I clutched his photo in my hand this morning and stared at the image of him sitting proudly in his white turban, smiling back at me. Overwhelming grief struck me -- you see he didn't get shot to death because of what he looked like, but he did suffer in his life way long before Sept 11th because he wore a turban. This is not just an American problem, this is a global issue perpetrated by ignorance and haters. As the Sikh community has shown us this is not time to be angry.

Our hearts go out to the families who lost their loved ones. You are our heroes. Your death will not be in vain.

Why does it take a tragedy to move us a step closer towards understanding?

The horrible tragedy experienced by the Oak Creek Sikh community underscores the need for better dialogue between people in our society. Our ability to talk to each other to gain understanding and tolerance has come to a grinding halt. Whenever I am asked "what is a Sikh?" or "what is the idea of that turban?" or "What is it with the long hair" I get so excited, because I know in that moment I am a step closer to closing the gap. This is why I wrote Suburban Turban. While it deals with the challenges of ignorance and hate crimes, it celebrates what is means to be Sikh, what it is to be second-generation, Indian American. The shooting at the Oak Creek Gurdwara is heartbreaking and we continue to be stunned by it all. Please take a moment to talk to your neighbors, talk to your kids, work colleagues, and friends and if you have a question, please ask it. Share your thoughts on facebook -- tell us how you feel about this..
