We’ve Done the Research and…

The numbers don’t lie!

Mobile vs. Desktops or even Laptops

I recently got some information via a client about the number of hits websites and/or social media gets from Mobile Devices – this other “Competitor” or company (or person) was saying that my figures were totally off base – well, sorry but I MUST totally disagree as the numbers do NOT LIE!   Out of all the sites that I’m currently monitoring about 25 to 30% of all hits to a company’s total online presence are from smart phones or tablets.  I’m not sure where this competitor is getting his/her data – but they must not be utilizing nearly the amount of tracking tools that WE at ButterMilk are using – sure we all have GA – but we also track our shares (Viral Lift) or even have PHP SCRIPTS that are embedded in GIF files that can be pointed to a PHP SERVER and there’s a whole other set of METRICS to follow! 

I also get the feeling that a lot of these companies are mired in doing things the OLD WAY – and hence do not utilize the same tools that are freely available to use IF you know WHAT to use and HOW to use them!   In fact, a lot of these companies are still having to add JS Codes to each page of a site they build – which I guess is OK if you prefer to just have ONE STATIC LINK for each page of your site.  And of course a lot of these people think that FLASH is still a great tool for Web Design – well all I can say is that’s WRONG!  Just on my last few trips over the past year or so – the number of iPads or Tablets that I’m seeing in Airports is staggering – they are EVERYWHERE these days and I can’t even begin to think about how many people are using their smart phones – as you don’t always see what kind of phone somebody has on their hip or in their purses, or other bags.

I just know that numbers that we’ve been seeing are pretty amazing – as this is a trend that’s growing and will continue to grow not just over time but rather quickly even in the short term!  As mobile smart phones and tablets are in a massive growth phase. Just watch your stock tickers and you’ll see how much growth there is! 

And don’t think that your customer base may not be able to have access to a smart phone as there are plenty that are “pay as you go” or PREPAID phones. We’re seeing these become more readily available and some people who can’t really buy a workstation or even a laptop will use these phones for ALL of their internet access 

And when it comes to the below 30 demographic – most of what you’ll see is smart phones – as who needs to pay for a home phone, internet access via an ISP, as well as a laptop or workstation, etc.  But you’ll see that most have both their 3G or 4G phones as well as using laptops at Wi-Fi spots or via their routers at home.  Rarely do you see workstations – as everyone wants to be MOBILE!   But I can’t confirm that other than by my STATS that I can see whenever or wherever I want – so I could drill all of that down into a comprehensive report on one site or use the XL export feature to compare all of the websites and Social Media Sites that I monitor all the time!

And I just read an interesting article today about trends in the market place.   More people are buying smart phones than workstations and sales via Workstations has dropped compared to growth in sales from Mobile Phone or Tablets – in short – MORE PEOPLE are using MOBILE DEVICES than Home Computers to buy other goods and services! 

iPad users have a higher education and higher income than general internet users which is a pretty lucrative market segment for retailers!  And that’s DESPITE the SCREEN SIZE and that’s a big reason that ButterMilk offers MOBILE FRIENDLY sites  as well as plain websites! 

Internet searches don’t take longer on mobile because the devices are harder to use, but rather, because mobile searchers and shoppers are task-focused and more specific in what they’re seeking.  Even with Bandwidth taken into consideration.

Microsoft reports that 70% of PC search tasks are completed in one week, while 70% of mobile search tasks are completed in one hour. Mobile searchers have a sense of urgency not seen as often in traditional search methods.

Savvy retailers understand, mobile shoppers need to be able to simply research products and quickly make a purchase. Therefore, there should be as little extraneous content included on mobile commerce websites.

In contrast, a full desktop site is packed with brand-related content, community interaction, company information and detailed research methods. Mobile, on the other hand, is lean, mean and clean.  And that’s why ButterMilk is building .mobi sites too! 

APPS are they right for you?

Marketers need to see that, with the exception of certain niches like gaming, the mobile web is still essential and apps additional. The mobile web is bringing in business for all customers, whereas apps can be viewed like loyalty programs for repeat customers.

Apps can be a big part of a mobile strategy, but are best for repeat customers who already know the brand and have downloaded the app. Unless your business exclusively deals with repeat customers, it’s best to start by tackling your mobile web presence and augment your mobile strategy with apps.  And hence, ButterMilk is also moving in to APP DEVELOPMENT! 

But the most important thing you should get from this POST is that MOBILE is the TREND – so get on board now – as the train has left the station!

Michael Gray Joins the Team!

We are pleased to announce that Michael Grey from Houston, Texas has joined our team!  Michael will be doing logo and branding, graphics design, and will be offering APP DEVELOPMENT! 

Micheal is also getting trained to help with Website Production to help us keep up with DEMAND! 

Michael got his Certificate of Technology and of Music/Business Recording and Occupational Certificate in College in 2001.  This naturally lead for a need to learn more Graphic Design apps such as Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator.

After years of designing for my music endeavors, I decided to use my acquired skills for local and national businesses. Working as a freelance designer and also as Head Designer of 99 Designs, he designed all forms of Business advertising; including business cards, logos, posters, banners, fliers, menus, clothing, etc.

Also in 2010, my two passions, music and design, had finally found a meeting place. I began educating myself on computer operating systems (MAC and PC), software design principals, digital signal processing and music synthesis to begin development of music production software and graphical user interface design. In 2011, I signed a development deal with Berlin, Germany based company Native Instruments for software and interface design. This in turn lead to an interest in mobile app design.

Currently, he is completing courses at San Jacinto College once again, this time for User Interface Design, as well as reading books on Objective C and iOS app design and marketing. :My goals are to make useful, attractive software applications for musicians as well as developing superb interfaces for the iOS and broader mobile app industry”.
