Kitschy, Affordable Fashion At ModCloth

You may have seen ads for ModCloth on some of your favorite sites around the blogosphere, but you may never have checked them out. It’s time you did. ModCloth offers a selection of affordable, cute and totally kitschy clothing, accessories and home decor for the under 30 set (although they don’t card you at you checkout, which is good because they have some totally cute stuff that those of us a bit north of 30 can pull off). The style is retro and vintage; it reminds me of those old black and white TV shows from the 50s that my brother and I used to watch on weekday afternoons. Think “I Love Lucy,” but with a modern twist.

ModCloth was started by a husband and wife team, Susan and Eric Koger when they were only 17 years old (they were not married at 17 – just sayin’). It started as an outlet for Susan’s passion for vintage clothing and soon grew and grew. In a few years’ time, they had a real winner on their hands. I can see why. The reason I’m writing this at all is that I kept seeing their ads on other sites and always thought, “What a cute dress!” I finally clicked and found they were affordable as well.

One thing that sets this apart from other clothing sites is customer participation. The “Be The Buyer” feature allows customers to vote on sample pieces. Those that get the most votes go into production. Interesting concept and smart business, if you ask me. What better way in ensure that an item is popular than having customers pick their favorites before they’re even produced? They also feature stylist’s picks so you can see the next big things.

OK, now that that is over, let’s all act like normal people and start thinking about VD rationally.  Most people believe Valentine’s Day was invented by the fiends at Hallmark & the floral industry to bolster sales that began to ebb after the December holidays, while others believe that it was a day celebrating St. Valentine who married couples against the Roman  government’s edicts. Either or, Unless you live under a rock, you are probably going to go looking for a nice gift for your significant other or chance the possibility of ending up in the dog house. I’ve  got a few ideas that may or may not help.

Score Style Points This Valentine's Day

Are you the kind of person who wears their heart on the outside? This might tempt your fancy. This is a lovely Steampunk Heart necklace found on Esty. The beauty of this piece isn’t simplicity, but the intricate design work covering it’s entire surface! Hopefully you can parlay this gift into a bubble bath built for two.  (I know I would if my bathtub wasn’t so woefully small!) A quick $30 and you are in business.

Keep Track With FitBit

Is your Valentine a fitness buff? Maybe this will be the gift they adore. This is the FitBit and it will track your loves every move for around $99. (Does that sound creepy?) This little gem tracks your steps, sleep cycles, food intake, how fast you’re walking/running/moving and lets you check with free online software to track progress. Did your Valentine make a New Year’s Resolution to get healthier? This might be a big help, PLUS it’s tiny, sleek design doesn’t even look like a pedometer. It comes with an arm cuff for you to wear it at night so you can track your sleep cycles as well. Heh, heh…. I wonder what the Fitbit will classify those late night, amorous activities as……

Godiva Cupcakes are heaven on Earth!

Sweet sinful sauciness! Does your Valentine love Chocolate? Here’s the mother-lode baby! Low-Key Valentine's Gifts

While some ladies dream of a big, romantic gesture on Valentine’s Day, I am not one of them. Certainly if you had the means and wanted to fly me off to Paris for a romantic long weekend, I would be in heaven (I’d even settle for New York. Just sayin’.), but realistically, I prefer an acknowledgment of the day in a way that shows that my husband gets me. And that is the key, I think. I’m not into a lot of bling. I don’t care for roses, and although I like flowers, I am allergic to them.  Truth is, I don’t really want or need much. If your significant other is the same way, here are some ideas that may help you be the hero this Valentine’s Day.

Moonpig.Com: Funny Name, Cool Cards

You know how you have an occasion to buy a card, Valentine’s Day for example, and you totally forget to pick one up every time you’re at the store because you’re too busy being terrified you’ll forget the toilet paper? I am terrible at remembering to buy cards. Thankfully, Moonpig.com has come into my life and made that much easier for me.

I live most of my life online. I get my news online, I stay in touch with my friends online, I pay my bills online, and do most of my shopping online, so having a service that will let me choose, customize, and send greeting cards online is perfect for me.

These aren’t e-cards that were really cool for 30 seconds years ago. Moonpig.com has a huge assortment of greeting cards for all occasions, and they allow you to personalize them with captions and customize them with photos. It’s great fun! I made three cards with photos I had taken and they all turned out great. The cards I chose had options to customize the front, both inside pages, and some even allowed you to customize the back.

Mailing cards is easy with Moonpig.com. No more hunting for a stamp, or trying to figure out how much extra postage to put on that oversized card because Moonpig.com takes care of that for you. As long as you make your order by 2pm EST (Mon-Fri) it is printed and mailed the same day. The cards I made arrived within 3 days of making them, which I thought was really fast service.

You can actually buy a card here in the US, enter the UK address, and it will be printed and mailed in the UK for much faster delivery than had it come from the States.

I can definitely see myself using Moonpig.com for a lot of my greeting card needs.

Hollywood Fashion Tape: I Accept No Substitutes

We’ve covered fashion tape before. It’s a wardrobe essential, in my opinion (although maybe they could make clothes that actually fit the way they’re supposed to, but whatever). There’s nothing that looks worse to me than bra straps that are hanging out, and nothing more irritating to me than a piece of clothing that won’t stay put. I’ve tried many different kinds of tape, at many different price points, but I always come back to one: Hollywood Fashion Tape.

At $8.99 for a tin of 36 three-inch strips, it may not be the cheapest option out there, but I think it’s the only option. While other tapes will stick temporarily, the Hollywood tape will stick as long as you need it to. I have a linen jacket with floppy lapels that will use the same two pieces of tape for months. I take it off to wash and iron the jacket, then apply new strips and forget about them until the next washing. The other thing I love about them is the material they are made from; it’s stretchy and flexible. This is important for a couple of reasons: 1. It’s silent – other types I’ve tried crinkle when I move, like actual tape; 2. It holds better because it moves with you and the fabric.

The tape size is perfect for most uses: keeping bra straps hidden, closing gaps in button-down shirts, keeping lapels in place, etc. If you don’t need the whole three inches, you can cut it (do so before removing the backing). You can also find special packs of odd shapes at fabric stores—they will help you through almost any fashion dilemma. I see they also sell small dots that can be an excellent choice if you just need a bit of tape.

My only complaint? Every time I buy more tape, I get another tin. I don’t need another tin, and I hate throwing them in the trash. Ladies—come up with a refill pack and I’ll buy it.

FILA's Skele-Toes

In the first days of January I, like many others, made the decision to start exercising more. Currently I am taking a year off from roller derby to have a few, uh… adjustments made to a couple of joints that have gotten bent in directions nature never intended boo boos over the last derby season. In between visits to the doctor, I can’t just sit on my rump and veg out doing nothing. That’s a sure fire way to get chunky for anyone, derby girls included! So HHH & I are making the decision to walk/run together. I say walk then run because I don’t want to aggravate any joints or tissues more than they already are. This meant I needed NEW SHOES! I run through athletic shoes at the rate of one pair a year, and it had been a year.

I went out shopping with the family one evening and perused the shoes at the local shoe store. (Ha! A rhyme.) I was really looking for something to walk/run more than a cross trainer or other sport related shoe. After looking the brands over, reading their bio’s, and trying them on, I narrowed it down to either the Sketchers GOrun or the FILA Skele-Toes. I chose the Skele-Toes. They were hot pink & black. The material was soft & breathable. They were really light, not heavy at all. They looked weird. They looked really weird. The next morning, I put them on to wear around the house to break them in. The insides felt cushiony, but still supported my arch. I wore them around while doing housework and then did a short 20 minute Zumba workout . They felt wonderful! In fact, the only thing I could find wrong with them was when we had that cold snap a week or so ago, the very breathable material also let in the very cold air. 

 When it comes to walking & running… oh my goodness! These shoes make it feel like I am running barefoot! There is still enough cushion between my foot and the ground where I don’t feel the acorns, stones, or rough terrain, but the free feeling I get with my toes all being separated made it a better experience.  I have a big problem with “Black Toe” when I run. That’s when your socks are too tight, running shoe’s toe box is too small, or doesn’t fit right and you end up with blisters under your toe nails that eventually turn black and the nail then falls off. Gross and icky, I get tired of not having all my nails when I get a pedicure, (especially when I still get charged for all ten). That hasn’t happened with the Skete-Toes. With every toe having it’s own comfy little compartment, they have the room they need. I’ve had the Skele-Toes for about a week so far, and I can say I am happy with my choice. My feet feel great and I can’t wait to put some more miles on these babies!

Friday Flop: L'Oreal's Couleur Experte Express

Last week I happened to be at CVS browsing through the hair color when noticed certain colors of the L’Oreal Paris Couleur Experte Express were on sale half off their regular $14.99 price! (You can also find it regularly as low as $11.99 on Amazon.com.)

Not being one to pass up a good deal I took a look at the colors and was thrilled to find Chocolate Macaroon (medium golden brown) included in the sale.  Purchased it and took it right home.   Normally I just do a straight all over color, but I was feeling adventurous.  Highlights?  Why the hell not.

I was not prepared for what I would find inside the box… or just how freaking long the process would take.

Two Steps To Not Highlighting Your Hair

See that?  That would be two sets of hair color.  While what laid ahead was not a complete Precision Foam Colour disaster, it was still pretty terrible.  First you had to open the larger box on the right of the above photo, mix, apply and leave on for 25-35 minutes.  I always do the max, just for good measure.  It all went on OK and 35 minutes later I was washing it out of my hair and conditioning (not included in the package).  Then it was time to blow dry.

So far I was liking the color and the results.  It was going to be more time consuming then I bargained for, but after drying and styling my hair (without product) I was ready to move to the next step.  I opened up the remaining box for the ‘harmonizing highlight’.  What a pain in the ass.  Mix a creme with a packet full of fine powder with a tiny spatula for 2 minutes till smooth.   Then you apply the mixture with the included wand (think the same kind you use for mascara, just a bit larger) or the Easy Glide Highlighter tool (looks like a tiny flat iron with sponges on the inside that you don’t plug in).

I actually used both.  The Easy Glide for larger chunks of highlights and the wand for some smaller ones.  The instructions said 10-15 minutes for subtle highlights and 15-25 for more visible.  I have to say I went about 20 minutes before I washed it out.

So yeah.   There I was washing my hair for a second time.  Followed by a 2 minute conditioner they included this time.  Rinse again, blow dry again… and voila.

Nothing.

Well, not nothing.  But let me tell you girls, you can barely see anything at all.  There is one faint off color streak that I can actually hide under the rest of my hair… and nothing else came out at all.  It is all one color.  No highlights.  All that work…and it didn’t work.  My husband actually joked that I spent all night coloring my hair.  But it was sort of true.

Not a fan.  Not a fan at all.  Too much work and the results…just are not worth it.  From now on I will stick to the all over color by itself.  Don’t waste your time with this ladies.

Bye, Bye Back Fat: Vanishing Back Bra

No matter how lean you may be (or used to be), chances are you are going to be familiar with the dreaded back boob: That lump that spills over the back of even your favorite bra and generally makes you feel fat, sloppy and icky. Guess what? It’s an almost universal problem unless you’re young and/or very skinny. But there is help: Soma’s Vanishing Back Bra. At a price range of $44-50, they’re not bargain basement bras, but they are most certainly worth every penny.

After going into early menopause, my whole body composition started to change. One of the side effects was back boob. No matter what I did, I couldn’t get rid of it—not by losing weight or by switching bras. I did finally go for a fitting at Nordstrom, thinking I was simply buying the wrong bra size. I was told by the trained bra fitter that it wasn’t the bra, “some people just have it.”

Translation: It’s totally you. Sigh.

So the quest began. I stumbled onto Soma because they were having a sale. It may be helpful to note that Soma is owned by the same company as Chico’s. For me, this is a good thing because they cater to the mature woman and therefore address body issues that Victoria would rather ignore (apparently). I found the Vanishing Back Bras and haven’t looked back. I don’t think I will ever wear another bra again. It’s true love.

They just work. You get a great smooth line on your back not matter how body-conscious your top. There are front close styles (my favorite because they’re easy on and off, plus you can store them folded in your drawer) and back close styles. They come with lightly lined cups, unlined cups and wireless. Plus they are extremely comfortable, at least for this 38B. They come in great colors and pretty patterns. So far, though, they don’t come in strapless. Boo. Because that, I think, is the last bra frontier.

Also battling VPL (visible panty line)? Try Soma’s Vanishing Edge Panties—they come in colors and patterns to match the bras (I love that) and are available in a variety of styles from boy shorts to bikinis. No panty lines and they don’t ride up.

LUSH's Green Bubbleroon Smells Yummy

This is the Green Bubbleroon. It was originally introduced on Black Friday along with two other “bubbleroons”  for the holiday season, but all the hullabaloo from the gift sets kind of pushed it aside. It’s shape is reminiscent of a macaroon (Yummy!). This little bubble maker combines the uplifting scents of orange & lime oils with Fair Trade Shea Butter to make for soft, fresh smelling bath water that turns a vibrant green and makes your skin feel amazing. The two halves are sandwiched together with virgin coconut oil “jam” which adds to the skin softening! The LUSH website suggests breaking the two halves apart and saving one for a later bath, so it made my $5.95 go a little further. The Green Bubbleroon was lovely and I enjoyed relaxing in a hot, bubbly tub.

Stepping Stone

Now this is the Stepping Stone. It has their zesty You’ve Been Mangoed scent and sea salt & pumice to help scrub off that dead skin we all get on our heels and foot pads. Because I play roller derby, my feet look AWFUL! Skate foot is rampant when it comes to derby leagues. This little gem may just change all that! I used it after I had been soaking in my Green Bubbleroon for a while and my foot skin had softened. HHH came in and scrubbed the heck out of my heels, instep, and big toe. It actually fizzed a little, which tickled at first, but was pleasant once I got used to it. The pumice & salt definitely did their duty and worked off a lot of the dead skin that had built up on my feet. after HHH was done scrubbing,(and I was done giggling.What? My feet are ticklish!), I rinsed off my feet and they were much softer than before, but had a left a green tinge. I’d probably have to use it regularly for it to remove everything, but it was pretty nice! I’m going to definitely spend the $3.95 a week to keep this around! My feet deserve it!

Northern Lights Soap

My last goodie was the Northern Lights Soap. It smelled divine! I just got a small piece because glycerine soaps don’t do well at my house. They tend to stay wet and fall apart on me. So I used this the next morning in my shower and well… I wasn’t impressed. Oh it smelled great. I definitely caught the hints of pine, cypress, & lime, but it just didn’t lather up well and after I rinsed it off my skin felt tight as if there was a residue causing it to seize up. It wasn’t pleasant. I had to use my regular body wash to get the icky feeling off me! It made me sad that something that smelled sooooo good ended up making my skin feel bad.  When I looked up the Northern Lights on LUSH’s website to see what exactly was in it, it said it was a winter only item anyway and they were out of it for the season, so no big loss there! I guess you can’t win them all, but at $7.95 per 3.5 ounce bar, I would want a little more good than bad, right?

So there you have my latest venture into the confines of LUSH, and like Meatloaf said, 2 out of 3 ain’t bad!

Bb. Texture Hair (Un)dressing Creme. Boo.

Not long ago I had my first time: The first time I ever returned an item to Sephora. For as long as I’ve been a loyal customer, I’d had yet to take advantage of their excellent return policy. Until I met Bumble and bumble’s Texture Hair (Un)dressing Creme.  

This stuff is supposed to give you that messy, undone look. Being a hopeless hair hopper (this time last year I had a pixie cut, now it’s a shag), I’m constantly in search of the “perfect” hair (aside: Doesn’t exist, at least not for me). When I hear about a styling product that promises something beyond the stick straight look everyone else seems to be sporting, I’m on it, so when I ran across this stuff it seemed just right. I made a special trip to the mall to get it, so I’m extra disappointed that it sucks.

And suck it does. I don’t know who decided that making your hair look like you hadn’t washed it in a week was a good thing, but that’s what this (Un)dressing Creme does. I swear I looked like I was wearing a cheap wig. My hair was dull, sticky, and I couldn’t get it into the shape I wanted, the shape that it normally goes in after I blow it dry with nothing in it. I realize the description says it adds some “grit,” but I use a product called Dirt that gives me some texture and separation without actually looking (or feeling or acting) dirty. I played with using less to see if if it looked less grimy, but no go. Oh, and it is strongly perfumed. It’s not a bad smell, just a bit strong for me.

It may help to mention here that I wash my hair daily because I cannot stand the way my hair looks when I don’t. You may love it; in that case this just may be the stuff for you. I’d give you mine but I took it back and got a great lipstick instead.
