Bare Minerals Customizable Get Started Kit

I started wearing makeup later in life, and when I finally decided to hide the uneven tones and redness from my rosacea, I tried several products before I found one that I loved. And to this day, I feel like the absolute best investment I have ever made in my beginnings of a makeup collection is the Bare Escentuals Customizable Get Started Kit. This kit comes with everything you need to get started with using the Bare Minerals foundation – three brushes, a brush shampoo, a get-started DVD, and the three basic powders you need to start your day. I was hooked from day one, not only because of the $100 savings from not buying everything piece by piece, but also because I found I enjoyed the loose powder over other foundations I have tried.

Big & Bright Eyeliner Kit

Eventually, this lead me to wonder how I would like loose powder for my eyelids. I began with a neutral color, something that would look very natural. Because of my new desire to dress up my eyes, I was gifted with the Big & Bright Eyeliner Kit. The whole kit is fabulous, however, one of my favorite things in this kit is the Brightening Opal eyelid primer. Unlike the plain primer I was using to dress up my eyes, this one has a slight sheen to it that helps accentuate my eye shadow. I recently started to use the Brightening Opal primer instead of water as a base for making eye liner from my loose powder. The tricky part to this is cleaning up the brush after use, but the results are amazing. (My tip: use a little Jojoba oil to clean the brush, followed by the Well-Cared For brush shampoo.)

Purely Nourishing Cream

My number one secret to beautiful, healthy skin isn’t in the powders or primers though. If there was one thing that I believe helps my skin, whether I wear make-up or not, it would be moisturizer. Even though I am new to make-up, I have tried many moisturizers over the years. My current choice is the Purely Nourishing Cream for Dry Skin. This moisturizer has a fantastic floral and citrus scent, and even though the cream feels thick, which I love in the winter time, it doesn’t sit on top of your skin. Having become a huge Bare Escentuals fan, I even tried another one of their moisturizers and didn’t find it nearly as pleasant as the Purely Nourishing Cream.

Being relatively new to make-up, I have found the kits to be invaluable to building up my beauty collection. I haven’t cast anything aside in my BE kits, because everything works so well together. But, whether I am putting on my make-up, or taking it off, nothing beats a great moisturizer.

Hollywood Body Wrap: Boo.

With awards season upon us, I like many others have been glued to my TV watching the SAGs and the Emmys, the Grammys and soon the Oscars. Oh the fashion, it parades past with bright colors, flashy prints, and expensive accessories galore! The one thing I wanna know is, how do they get in those dresses?? After checking out a few things I googled, one name kept popping up. Hollywood Body Wraps.

According to the Hollywood Body Wrap website:

I was curious, so I said what the heck and scheduled a wrap the next day. When I arrived at the “spa” (it was literally just a store front in a strip mall with no real spa facilities what so ever.) I filled out a health sheet that asked the usual questions about if I was in good health, no heart problems, poor circulation, etc. I completed  that  and was shown to a small dressing room behind a curtain where I stripped down to my unmentionables and waited for the wrap tech. She was a pleasant little woman. She had a clip board with a sheet on it and as she calculated my before measurements with a tape measure and wrote them down, a plastic bin appeared under the curtain that had large, rolled ace bandages in it. The tiny woman didn’t tell me what my measurements were, but got right to work mummifying me in the warm, wet ace bandages. Quickly, she wrapped me from head to toe in the mineral soaked bandages with a strength that belied her small stature.

After I looked like I belonged in ancient Egypt, she threw a tarp over me for modesty (The website showed plastic body suits) and asked me to hop on an elliptical machine where I did about a 45-minute set. I was guessing that I needed to keep my blood moving while wrapped so tightly, but this was only a guess since after I was wrapped and placed on the elliptical machine my small, Herculean assistant disappeared. No explanation of what was going on or what I could expect. After 45 minutes on the elliptical, I was finally approached to move to this Segway-looking machine where all I did was stand on it while it vibrated at 22 miles per hour! (I can only imagine what my fanny looked like all wrapped up and jiggling at that speed!) After 30 minutes of that, I was ushered back into my private dressing room to be unwrapped and remeasured. Like before, I was measured almost in silence except for the questions I would pepper in here and there. After she was through she left and I got dressed to meet her in the lobby. When I got there she had added up my “inch loss” and told me I had lost 19 and a half inches. I was skeptical. I saw myself in the mirror when I was getting dressed and I didn’t really see it. My clothes fit a little looser, but I didn’t really see any change.  When I went to pay I got the hard sell for buying a package of 3 to 6 wraps that would be like upkeep for my 19 inch loss today. The website says to lose one pant size you need to do the wraps 3 to 6 times, but really, who has the money to drop on that?? I politely said no, paid my $159 plus tax and tip, and went home to check out this loss in my own mirror. Yeah, I still didn’t see it.

So there ya have it. Does the Hollywood Body Wrap work? Maybe yes, maybe no, but at $159 a pop, I think I’ll just keep doing the running and dieting thing. That’s free!

Tweezerman SPA Browmousse ($10/tube, Drugstore.com) Tweezerman is a trusted name in eyebrow grooming, and the reviews of this product bear this out. Overall, it holds well and lasts all day. The bonus is that this gel is probably available at your local drugstore if you don’t want to wait to have it delivered.

Save A Lot: Walgreens Beeswax Lip Balm

Walgreens Beeswax Lip Balm ($1.59/.15 oz) As I said, this is not an area where I want to spend any money, but I find it necessary, so I did a bit of experimenting and discovered something that works very well for me: beeswax lip balm. Yes, lip balm. Have you ever heard of mustache wax? It’s used to keep mustaches looking well groomed. Well, I thought why not eyebrows? I had some around (I don’t care for it as a lip balm, it turns out), so I swiped it on my brows (one swipe per brow) and then combed them into place. Holds all day, defines and then washes out easily. And for the price, honestly you can’t beat it. Just be careful with it around the eye area as it’s not meant for that. It has peppermint oil in it, which smells lovely but would sting if it got in your eye.

The Alphabet Series: The Beginning

The thing about a book series is that you get a chance to get comfortable with a character, to the point that they end up feeling like an old friend. I don’t know about you, but I love that. Sure, I love to read just about any book, but I don’t get as excited about any old book as I do about one that’s part of favorite series.

There are only a handful of series that I will actively seek out, and The Alphabet Series by Sue Grafton is one of them. It’s a great detective series for people who may not actually like detective series.

Four Reasons Why I Love The Alphabet Series

1. There are plenty of books. She’s not quite through all 26 letters yet, but her latest offering is V Is For Vengeance. That’s plenty of books to enjoy until the next new one comes out.

2. They are set in the 1980s. I am a child of the 80s, so I love the nostalgia. It’s worth noting that Grafton starting writing these in 1982, which is where the series starts. I think the latest is set in 1987. Anyway, I love reading about a time before computers and cell phones. It’s low-tech, but somehow it never feels dated to me.

3. They have a strong heroine. Probably one of my favorite things about this series is Kinsey Millhone, a 30-something PI that lives alone and likes it that way. She has a few flings along the way, but she doesn’t need a man to be complete. She’s can take care of herself, she knows how to pick a lock and love McDonald’s Quarter Pounders With Cheese. She’s a former cop who also knows how to bend the law when it suits her purposes. I love her and totally identify with her.

The Latest Kinsey Millhone Caper

4. They have just the right amount of twists and turns. They’re easy to follow, but not necessarily predictable. They focus on the lives of ordinary people, cases that a typical PI may actually come across in the course of a career. But they are not boring. There’s always plenty of action and danger to keep you interested and turning the pages.

5. They are set in Northern California. This beautiful area is the backdrop for most of the stories. While I’ve never been there, I feel as if I have. The area is almost another character; you get to know it over time.

This wildly popular series has been featured and mentioned in TV series and movies for years. There’s a reason for that: The books are good. I’ve read most of them several times and they never get old.

If you’re looking for a good, solid read, grab A Is For Alibi and see what you think. I’m willing to bet that before long your reader will look like alphabet soup.

Sally Hansen Nail Effects

I had to run to the local corner drug store to pick up some diabetes supplies for my kids. Turns out there was a line at the pharmacy so I went meandering through the store while I waited for my prescriptions. As I strolled up and down the aisles I noticed these crazy little boxes in the nail polish section. There were animal prints, tie dye, swirls, patterns…. you name it! A closer look revealed that these were the new line of nail decor called  Sally Hansen Salon Effects. They looked pretty cool. What roller girl wouldn’t want fishnets on her nails as well as her legs? It was a little pricey: I spent $10 on just one small box of these. I picked the tie dye pattern.

When I got home, I was instantly attacked by the Eldest who saw what was in the bag. Since she is a rabid nail polish fan, I decided to let her help out with this review. Many of the designs appeal to the younger demographic and I wanted to see if this product would hold up to a typical teenager’s daily grind. We sat down in the living room and got to work.

You open the tiny box and see there are two sealed packets of the nail decals, a multi faceted nail file, and a wood stick. The directions are also folded as tightly as possible, so it took a moment to get them out and in a readable condition. They instructed that you need to use the multi nail file to  shape and buff your nails first, then swipe the nails with nail polish remover to ensure a clean surface to adhere the nail decals to. That’s where the easy of this product ends. The polish decals are shaped like your nails. Basically, you pick the shape that best fits your nail, peel off the clear top cover and the backing, and apply it to your nail. Unfortunately, the nail decal is extremely thin and susceptible to the slightest breeze. Our ceiling fan happened to be on and the moving air folded the first decal sheet over on itself rendering it unusable. After successfully getting  a decal sheet on one nail, you use the wooden stick to smooth out any bumps or air pockets, and finally use a specific side of the multi file to file off the excess decal that goes past your nail tip.

I watched Eldest struggle with putting the decals on her nails. I’m quite sure she’d have said a naughty word if I hadn’t been in the room. I also put on two of the decals. One on my left thumb and another on my right ring finger. The plan was, now that the decals were applied, to wear them for the weekend and then assess how they fared. They didn’t even make it that far!  By the time dinner was finished and we had gone out to get ice cream Eldest was exasperated. She came up to me and said, “Sorry Mom.” as she started peeling the nail decals off. In just a few hours on the fingers of a teenager they had already chipped, frayed, and started peeling up. An hour or so after that, the decal on my right ring finger began peeling up. I still have the left thumb, but it’s frayed and chipped as well. I don’t see it lasting too much longer.

So, if you’re looking for something special for maybe a big night on the town or perhaps a look for Halloween, these would be a good choice, but really, for everyday wear they just aren’t practical and at anywhere from $7 to $12 per box, I’m not going to be running right out to buy more. I’ll save up and go to the nail salon instead.

While I had hoped to see what might be trending for spring, this was the autumn/winter 2012 collection.  Over the summer I posted after each night, but this time around I live tweeted so I thought you all might just like to see a recap of what I liked best.  (Which by the way I saw about 14 runway shows over the week and its so hard to choose from everything!)

Jess Abernethy opened the week with Alpine Dream.  Lots of shearing on the sleeves, mixing of prints (think flowers on top and small dots on the bottom… things you would not think of putting together) and all flushed looking cheeks.  Get out the blush girls!

Maria Del Carmen Mercado showed how black is timeless and always in, especially when paired with lace.  This?  Was beautiful!

Sara Derfus had creative textured dresses like this

And used some great blue accents to make other bright colors really pop.

Karen Sabag showed us that feathers are not only in for your hair or earrings (which I have only just got on board with the feathered earring trend… the little 80′s child in me fought it for awhile)… but they can be applied to clothes to the waistline and even in some cases the neck.

This dress was GORGEOUS!

She also included some beautiful wedding dresses at the end of the show.  Getting married ladies?  I would definitely check out her designs if I was doing it all over again myself.  Or maybe a vow renewal.  Hmmm…

I was in love with Toni Lyn Spaziano‘s Chances R Designs line.  It felt very 60′s inspired… Pan Am sophisticated is how I would describe it.  Beautiful.

I was also fascinated by Karla Marie‘s Gorgeous Khaos line.  Think shiny, sparkles… lots of pale blue colors.  Bubble skirts with pockets!

Sarah Prost had some really cute skirts and dresses I could see myself wearing.  I loved her line last time too.  She makes gorgeous stuff!

And this time around she added a menswear line as well!

Lastly I would say all of Peach Carr‘s fashions are always in.  The former athlete in me is in love with her designs every time.  Chic tennis outfits that are made not only to dazzle on the court, but then head for a night out without needing to change anything but your sneakers… to high heels.  How cute is that!

I have to say it made the old field hockey player in me long to have had something that cool to play in, never mind hit the town in later on!

All in all amazing shows!  I am already looking forward to September when the next collections are shown.

Kitschy, Affordable Fashion At ModCloth

You may have seen ads for ModCloth on some of your favorite sites around the blogosphere, but you may never have checked them out. It’s time you did. ModCloth offers a selection of affordable, cute and totally kitschy clothing, accessories and home decor for the under 30 set (although they don’t card you at you checkout, which is good because they have some totally cute stuff that those of us a bit north of 30 can pull off). The style is retro and vintage; it reminds me of those old black and white TV shows from the 50s that my brother and I used to watch on weekday afternoons. Think “I Love Lucy,” but with a modern twist.

ModCloth was started by a husband and wife team, Susan and Eric Koger when they were only 17 years old (they were not married at 17 – just sayin’). It started as an outlet for Susan’s passion for vintage clothing and soon grew and grew. In a few years’ time, they had a real winner on their hands. I can see why. The reason I’m writing this at all is that I kept seeing their ads on other sites and always thought, “What a cute dress!” I finally clicked and found they were affordable as well.

One thing that sets this apart from other clothing sites is customer participation. The “Be The Buyer” feature allows customers to vote on sample pieces. Those that get the most votes go into production. Interesting concept and smart business, if you ask me. What better way in ensure that an item is popular than having customers pick their favorites before they’re even produced? They also feature stylist’s picks so you can see the next big things.

OK, now that that is over, let’s all act like normal people and start thinking about VD rationally.  Most people believe Valentine’s Day was invented by the fiends at Hallmark & the floral industry to bolster sales that began to ebb after the December holidays, while others believe that it was a day celebrating St. Valentine who married couples against the Roman  government’s edicts. Either or, Unless you live under a rock, you are probably going to go looking for a nice gift for your significant other or chance the possibility of ending up in the dog house. I’ve  got a few ideas that may or may not help.

Score Style Points This Valentine's Day

Are you the kind of person who wears their heart on the outside? This might tempt your fancy. This is a lovely Steampunk Heart necklace found on Esty. Keep Track With FitBit

Is your Valentine a fitness buff? Maybe this will be the gift they adore. This is the FitBit and it will track your loves every move for around $99. (Does that sound creepy?) This little gem tracks your steps, sleep cycles, food intake, how fast you’re walking/running/moving and lets you check with free online software to track progress. Did your Valentine make a New Year’s Resolution to get healthier? This might be a big help, PLUS it’s tiny, sleek design doesn’t even look like a pedometer. It comes with an arm cuff for you to wear it at night so you can track your sleep cycles as well. Heh, heh…. I wonder what the Fitbit will classify those late night, amorous activities as……

Sweet sinful sauciness! Does your Valentine love Chocolate? Here’s the mother-lode baby!
