Despite the near Baltic conditions we are experiencing, Spring is upon us and with it a list of jobs to do in the garden.

In this article we give BuyandSellers some great tips on getting your garden ready for summer and how BuyandSell.ie can help. Remember, those warm sunny summers days are but a month or two away!!

Early Spring

• Pruning – roses, shrubs and vines love a good pruning at this time of year. New buds will develop on the new growth made after the pruning.
• Tidy up your borders. Use a hoe to remove any weeds that are starting to grow.
• Apply mulch or bark to your borders. This will suppress unwanted weeds.
• Sow hardy annuals outdoors such as Viola and Alyssum. These can withstand a bit of frost at this time of year.
• Use your windowsill to start growing half hardy annuals such as Cosmos and Petunias. They like a bit of heat before planting in the garden.

Mid to Late Spring

• Time to start mowing the lawn and applying lawn weed and feed. This work will really pay dividends come the summer.
• Clip back your hedges. It will give them shape and encourage new healthy growth.
• Plant new shrubs, roses and perennials.
• Time to get summer bulbs into the ground such as Lilies and Hyacinths.
• Apply a good plant food to smaller trees, roses and shrubs.
• If you have a wooden patio set, check its condition. Does it need replacing? If not, a quick sanding and coat of varnish will extend its life.
• Do you have a patio or deck? You will be amazed at what power hosing it will do. You will think you have a new patio for sitting out and enjoying that glass of wine!!

Don’t forget the wildlife….if you have somewhere in the garden that you think birds may nest, now is the time to put out some nest boxes. Birds begin nesting in Spring and a nest box and some food can be a welcome attraction to a hungry little bird.

Animal Rescue Centres play a huge part in the role of animal welfare in Ireland. Centres across the country save thousands and thousands of animals lives every year. Now with the help of some great Irish musicians, Dogs in Distress Animal Rescue center will be able to save more…

With being involved in helping Animal Rescue centres for some time now, you can imagine here at BuyandSell.ie we were absolutely delighted to hear that the great Irish Musicians Cathy Davey and Neil Hannon (of the Divine Comedy fame) both love dogs so much that they have called upon a group of their musical friends with the intention to raise much needed funds for the very deserving Dogs in Distress animal rescue centre in Ireland!

Cathy Davey, left, explains “I had been trying to figure out how to raise awareness for homeless dogs without it being a negative campaign for some time. Then I went to see David Turpin play last year and was moved by his song “Fur”. It was such a playful love song that I wondered how many other songwriters would be interested in writing songs about dogs they have loved. Turns out nearly everyone I approached had a funny story to tell…. and so now we have a 15 track album that’s as personal and playful as it gets!”

Some of the names that feature on the album are Irish greats such as David Gray, David O’ Doherty, Graham Linehan and Lisa Hannigan… amongst others!  With their skill and musical vision, the 15 track album ‘Oscar the hypno-dog and other tails‘ has thus been born and BuyandSell.ie are buying 10 copies to give away!
