Fans of the original Mario Kart for the Super Nintendo often have fond memorials of challenging their friends over difficult tracks, and winning out by knocking their opponents off the track at the last second. The first Mario Kart virtually invented a sub-genres of battle racing games and provided once of the best multi player games of all time. With Mario Kart Wii, Nintendo has produced a game that is a worthy successor to the classic.

One of the more interesting changes is the inclusion of a motion controlled steering wheel with the game. There is a somewhat steep learning curve with the wheel, but it does make for great fun once you're accustomed to the unique design. For fans who prefer the traditional Wii controls, those are compatible with the game as well.

Improving upon the cartoon graphics, the Nintendo Wii version features impressive 3D backgrounds and characters, while retaining the same basic look of the series. Special effects are particularly impressive, with fireballs and slinging turtles rendering better than ever.

The physics in this year's Kart version are greatly improved as well, as you can expect more realistic drift and inertia than ever before; while the new level of realism may be a change, it is for the better. All of the character avatars you are used to are back, with a total of 25 choices in this version of the game in addition to new players such as Baby Daisy. The music is traditional and fun, if not outstanding and fits well with the game.

Adding to the mix, innovations include an innovative use of the Wii Mote controller as well as a brand new air stunt system that allows you to earn points and the addition of motorcycles as vehicle options. Since multi player has been a core part of the series since the beginning, it's important that both off line and online multi player modes are great fun in this version of Kart.

Starting with the Grand Prix race mode, you compete against computer or other players in four difficult courses. The game includes 8 different cup options, each with unique, graphically impressive course designs, which make for a long game play life, one of the longest of all Nintendo Wii Games. Additionally, a number of classic courses from the series return with better graphics, which makes the game even more fun for series fans. Unique use of the new trick mode allows you to further you standings by performing extreme-sports moves that can help give you boosts, including half-pipes, moguls and other unique ramp interactions. While this may take some time to get used to, it does add to the difficulty and potential options of the game over time and is a welcome addition.

Additional game modes include Balloon Battles and Coin Runner battles in an arena mode, which is fun either with split screen, against the computer or online. An arena game is capable of holding 12 total players, making online play a lot of fun, especially with friends. In Wii Connect, you'll earn a score that allows you to compete against players around your same level as you advance.

Guitar Hero 3, Legends of Rock, marks a solid evolution of the popular Wii guitar game. For Wii fans used to using their WiiMote as an extension of themselves in games such as Wii Sports, the integration of the controller into Guitar Hero will come as a delight. The third edition of the Guitar Hero series features a number of improvements from previous games in the series including a larger play list, including master tracks, additional multi-player options and high levels to ensure you will have a long game lifespan.

For players new to Guitar Hero, the basic idea is a rhythm game where you have to keep pace with an increasingly complex set of commands that correspond to on-screen guitar play. You control the player with a guitar-shaped controller that features 5 fret buttons and a strummer. The Wii remote fits into the back of the guitar to take advantage of the motion sensor capability. The better you are able to keep up with the rhythm, the better your on-screen avatar will perform and the further you will advance your virtual musical career.

Since you are playing along with real-world classic rock tracks, the good news is that Guitar Hero 3 features a great list of classic tracks from bands ranging from Santana to the Smashing Pumpkins. Some of the tracks included in the game are "Evenflow" by Pearl Jam, "Paint it Black" from the Rolling Stones and recent tracks such as "When Your Were Young" from the Killers and the modern classic "Helicopter" from Block Party. Fans of metal will appreciate tracks from Metallica, Iron Maiden and Slayer as well.

As an evolution from Guitar Hero 2, this game features more intense shredding and allows for more levels of difficulty depending on your experience (and bravery.) Existing fans of the series will find the difficult levels to be more challenging than anything in previous games, requiring a whole new level of dexterity (and practice!) This year's game also makes it easier to pull of techniques such as pull offs and hammer ons, which are integrated better with the core game play.

The 3D graphics are clean and the special effects are neat, if not amazing. Although the graphics stack up well enough, you will be too caught up in the game play to be bothered by the occasional rendering issue. the real focus on the game are the improved game play modes including a better career mode where you build up your portfolio on tour and rise from small town musician to rock legend (hopefully.) There are also cooperation and competitive multi-player options where you can challenge you friends to shredding competitions on any of the songs included in the game.

An additional multi player mode is the battle option where you can earn musical weapons to try and throw you opponent off including broken strings and overloaded amplifiers. You can also play friends on line, and join into additional online challenges as well, which can be a fun way to practice.

Company President Satoru Iwata told the Wall Street Journal:

"The hardware team started work on the next thing as soon as they were done with their previous project, but what they think up doesn't necessarily become a product,"

Iwata did not elaborate on the expected release of the "new wii" but I don't think he's in too big of a rush considering how well the Wii is doing and it is showing no signs of slowing down.  My best guess would be 2-3 years from now we'll start hearing a lot of buzz.

I like the Wii but don't love it...and I think that with how fast technology is improving the next-next gen systems that we have to look forward to are going to be unreal.
