"Like Maxim, but about Xbox!" was clearly the mandate given to Mike Salmon, former editor-in-chief of PC Accelerator and current editor-in-chief of The Official Xbox Magazine. He got it half right: this gamer lifestyle magazine has the locker-room feel of Maxim but lacks Maxim's intelligent, tongue-in-cheek style. The result is something that looks like it was written by high-school sophomores.

For example, a bio of Kasumi, a character in the game Dead or Alive 3, reads "A redhead with a difference--she can take on all comers. And if DoA 3 has the "[breast] bounce on/off" option, she'll definitely have a lot of comers." On the plus side, the game reviews and previews are informative and mostly free of bull.

BlazBlue is truly a 2D fighter of its own kind. The game is a fantastic exclamation point, and one that pushes the boundaries of 2D fighting games. It's a hardcore game that also can be fun to the amateurs of this genre, but make no mistake; the challenge is here if you want it. Overall, this is a wonderful addition to the genre and it exemplifies why 2D fighters are still alive and kicking.

Wii - Inexpensive Gaming Console for the Whole Family

The Nintendo Wii is the most inexpensive of the current generation of gaming consoles. It provides motion sensing controllers and 480p graphics. We tested the Wii before its launch day (I'm a game reviewer), and we had our own unit in our home the morning of launch day. Here are our findings.

The Wii is designed around a menu of "channels". There is of course the game-playing channel, where the Wii will play any Wii or GameCube game. Simply load the disc in and go. There is a Mii channel where you set up a profile and avatar to connect to all your game playing. The Photos channel lets you look at photos on your TV. Other channels for news, weather, and online shopping require an interent connection; the news and weather were not actually working at launch time.

The system does NOT have a regular network cable port, which both the PS3 and XBox 360 have. Instead, it works with built in wireless or with a USB network adapter. I am a firm proponent of wireless - less clutter! So I am thrilled that they offer wireless automatically. With the PS3, you have to pay extra for the 60 gig unit to get this built in. The XBox 360 requires extra hardware as well.

The console I received is in fact NOT the newest version. It was manufactured in July of 2008 and has the higher power rating of the older models. I don't blame Amazon for this. But I am just a bit aggravated that Microsoft decided to stick old xbox's in the "new" elite console package.

A nice upgrade! : Nintendo DSi Matte Black

Nintendo DSi Matte Black - I bought a DS Lite two weeks ago. It was a hasty purchase, and after I bought the device I later read about the DSi coming out. I read ALL OVER the internet about this thing. I evaluated all pros and cons. Yes, I would like to play GBA games - but I have a GBA.

Yes, I would like more battery life - but there are more brightness settings. The main selling points that finally got me were the slightly bigger screens, the matte finish, and the DSi shop. Therefore, I ended up returning my DS Lite a couple of days later for only a half-refund (Gamestop I love you) and signed up for the DSi pre-order. I bought the DSi during the midnight launch party at my local Gamestop.

After getting the DSi - I feel confident I made the right decision. The black matte finish is very nice. I actually prefer it over the shiny finish because you leave less fingerprints everywhere and the texture is nice. ALSO, the new menu format for the DSi is a vast improvement over the DS Lite. Although only slightly larger, I am definitely happier with the larger screens. Sure the battery life may not be as long as the Lite, but DSi brightness settings are amazing. The brightest setting on the DSi stumps the Lite's brightest setting.

I am an adult gamer and the cameras and music interactivity of this device do not really excite me - but they are nice features. Do not expect to start a professional photo studio with pictures taken from cameras. They are for fun and not professional photos - the resolution is comparable to cell phones of 5 years past.

I am mainly excited about the DSi shop. There are rumours floating everywhere about a virtual console being released and the DSi shop providing "classic" GBA and even GB games in the future (and maybe more systems?!). This would more than justify the lost GBA slot. Nonetheless, the DSiWare games and apps will be coming out every week - and I am sure some great things will come out of this.

The SD/SDHC slot is another great feature on this device. I can see this slot being very useful down the road when more and more games and apps are made available at the DSi shop. The internal storage of the DSi is pretty slim - so this is well needed.

I did my research. There are pros and cons for buying the DSi over the Lite. I weighed them, and then weighed them again. The verdict: PROS = 70, CONS = 30. This is based on the lost GBA slot, the battery life, the expensive price tag. If you are new to the DS community like I am, it would only make sense to jump right in with a DSi. If you are a diehard Lite fan with a tight budget, you may want to wait a couple of months and see if the DSi shop starts a virtual console. Overall though - I am very happy with this little guy.

Why PS3 Was By Far The Best Value for USA

I had sat on the sidelines of the next gen video games up until a couple of weeks ago. I had tried Wii almost as soon as it came out and was captivated by the motion sensors but the limited availability and sameness to the games as well as limited graphics was frustrating.

Xbox 360 the $50 a year subscription and more importantly it lost the Blu-ray/HD battle were big no points for me. I enjoy games, my wife does not. She does enjoy movies and the internet. When I pointed out that PS3 was a Blu-ray player (with excellent reviews) and could let us surf the internet, she was all for it.

I have an 'old' HDTV (3 years old). It has a maximum resolution of 1080i and a DVI input but no HDMI. I did some research before buying this so I bought an HDMI to DVI cable at the same time. I was worried about hooking it up and getting it to look right and also getting sound. I should not have been. It took literally a few minutes. Plugged the HDMI end into the PS3 and the DVI end into the HDTV. Received a picture (great picture) right away. It detected that 1080i was the highest resolution and I choose that.

Sound I simply choose the option to put sound out correctly and received gorgeous sound. I only use the speakers that came with the HDTV but it sounds fantastic on Blu-Ray. I can only imagine what people with surround sound systems will get.

The Blu-Ray discs are stunning. Even with 'just' 1080i. Truly beautiful. And it also up-converts very well. My favorite movies are the LOTR expanded editions. I have seen LOTR on TNT HD broadcasts. With the PS3 they look almost as good perhaps even better than the HD broadcasts. Also one of the coolest things and I have no idea if this for all Blu-Rays are just PS3 is that it remembers where you were on discs (Blu-ray and DVD discs)even if the disc was last played 8 discs ago. So say for instance you a third of the way through Fellowship. You then put a few game discs in, some other movie discs, then go back to Fellowship. It actually remembers where you left off that disc. Love it.

The internet browsing has been very cool. At first it was ok but it did not fill up the screen and the lettering was too small. But then I discovered zoom in and zoom out. And now it is really fun to browse. As an aside when I started browsing if someone was on our lap-top we would get a connection conflict and would not be able to surf on the lap-top. I called Linksys and they were able to change a bunch of settings on the router and it works just fine now, no problems on using both at the same time.

As for games I have Assassin's Creed and Oblivion now. Both look amazing. I have also downloaded demos for Mirror's Edge (stunning) and Motorstorm (fun and also amazing graphics). Even as a gamer truly I only really have time for a half dozen games every year or two or even three. A lot of these games last a long time. So in reality the 360s edge on variety is for all intents moot. I am planning to get Little Big Planet and maybe the new Spidey game when it comes down in price. That will more than hold me over to God of War and which ever other few games I will get in 2009. Having a handful of great games, to me, is more important than 50 titles coming out a year.

Bottomline is if you have an HDTV (particularly if you have a home theater set up) and no Blu-ray and enjoy gaming the PS3 is truly awesome. You get a great Blu-ray player, an 80gig hard drive, incredible gaming capabilities (just downloading the demos would be cool), internet browsing and video watching on your TV. You can also download the LIFE utility that has an incredibly cool visual globe where you can get live weather and news headlines around the world. And you can help cure diseases by linking to a Stanford project that looks at how proteins work and fold. If you allow it your processor can be added to the processing power being used for the Stanford project (when you are not gamin and such).

Sony has succeeded in making a truly great heart of your home media experience. This is so much more than Wii it isn't even close. And with Blu-ray and free Sony playstation network, it really is a much better value than any of the 360 choices you have. Right now heading into the 2008 holiday season, PS3 stands alone as clearly the best system and the best value. Not only for gamers but for the entire family.

Xbox 360 in a Small Nutshell

Xbox 360 is the successor to the Xbox, and competes with the PlayStation 3 and the Wii as part of the seventh generation of video game consoles. The Xbox 360 is also compatible with the Zune, which is posted on the Xbox Official Website.

Xbox Live, incidentally, supports voice and video communication, the latter a feature possible with the Xbox Live Vision which is an add-on USB web camera designed specifically for the Xbox 360 which I might add has a portfolio of nearly 400 games in 37 countries. So it's doing pretty well don't you think.

The Xbox 360 has been constantly outsold by Nintendo Wii and in the past few months it seems like even the PS3 has managed to attract more gamers than Microsofts gaming platform. Nintendo Wii was always about casual gaming , unlike Xbox 360 which was conceived as a console for real gamers. You can see this not only by the success of the Nintendo Wii, which is built on casual gaming, but also the success of games such as Guitar Hero, Rock Band and Singstar.

The Xbox 360's graphical user interface is actually the Xbox 360 Dashboard, a tabbed interface that features five "Blades" (formerly four blades), and was designed by AKQA. With its extensive digital media features, a superior online service, and an excellent game library, the Xbox 360 remains the game console to beat ( depending on your personal choice of course).

The Xbox 360 is an excellent console. The raw processing power of it is many times greater than the original console. Aesthetically, it is a dramatic leap over the original Xbox.

Xbox 360 MC2 Racing Wheel by Mad Catz

The MC2 Racing Wheel by Mad Catz for the XBOX 360 does have pedals. I'm not sure what the previous reviewer was playing on. But, you'll see in the picture that there are pedals. The pedals are removable, so maybe his cousin didn't have them plugged in. For the price, this wheel is the best on the market. There are better wheels out there, if you're willing to shell out the cash. But for the price, this one can't be beat. You will be pleased with this wheel.

PGR3 doesn't allow much customization for the MC2 wheel, such as dead zones and sensitivity. But that's more the fault of the game and not the wheel. I'm sure future driving/racing games will allow more customization for this wheel. The problem was PGR3 came out before this wheel was on the market. However, it still works well overall. It may take a little getting used to.

The quality of the unit is great. It is comfortable with no-slip soft rubber on the wheel. My previous Mad Catz wheel for my 1st gen xbox still works great after years of use. I'm sure I'll get the same life from this new version. The wheel's resistance feels natural and the vibration feedback adds to the realism in games. The pedals and shifter work well too. I've seen the wheel as cheap as $59.99 in adds. It just can't be beat.

XBox 360 Overheating

Here's what usually happens: In the middle of a hot game your console freezes up. This happens a few more times, and then you see the Red Rings Of Death. The RR of D is not a feature of XBox, nor a foe in a fantasy game. The RR of D means that you're machine is overheating. Some people have reported seeing an orange screen flashing as well. The Rings shut down your machine and you lose your unsaved data. What it means is that it's overheated.

Some machines overheat after hours of play, but some do in as quickly as 10 minutes. Either way, the machine is defective and something has to be done about it.

Now, you can either send the machine in for repairs, or you can fix it yourself. Lots of gamers have been peeved at Microsoft's slow response to their overheating woes. They say that Microsoft is slow to repair the units. Often, they will offer a refurbished unit instead. Refurbished machines are as good as new, so it sounds pretty good, but there are tons of stories online of defective replacement machines. Some XBox owners have gone through 3 or 4 machines, all of which overheated!

It's a pretty sad state of affairs. Overheat sufferers claim that the company's customer service is less than helpful, and that they fail to adequately take responsibility for their faulty machines.

There are a few things you can do on your own to deal with overheating. Just like any other electronics, try to keep the back of the console clear so that the hot air can escape. With a well-made machine, this shouldn't be a problem, but if you have it all the way back against the wall, it might be a factor in why it overheats.

Supposedly, the root of the overheating problem in XBox 360s is that they tried to cut corners by using cheaply made, slow fans. There are 2 fans on either side, and they are really important for cooling the console. You can always reach back there and feel if the unit feels very cold or super hot. If one of the fans is not turning, or if it is going too slowly, you might want to replace the fan yourself. Of course, it shouldn't be YOUR responsibility to do that, but considering all the headaches customers have had with Microsoft's replacement machines, it just might save you some trouble.

If you send the machine in for a new fan, they may try to gouge you for it. If you look on the web (check eBay), you can find the exact same fans that are used in the XBox 360 for as low as $10. It isn't too difficult to replace the fan yourself, and you can find schematics and tutorials online to help you.

Another minor repair you can do yourself is to put some Arctic Silver 5 on the heatsink. This is a cooling compound that you can buy online. If you apply it on the heatsink, which is located just between the CPU and the fans, it will cool down the components. People who have used Arctic Silver report great results. It seems to keep the unit from ever overheating again.

Remember also that your XBox 360 has a year long warrantee. The original warrantees were six months, but they've since extended it, and it's retroactive. That means if you bought yours within the last year, it still should be covered.

This is something that I had been waiting for when I decided to upgrade my TV in size from a 22" to a 46", also from 1080i to 1080p. Since I had the old pro console without an HDMI port in the back I still wanted to make use of the 360's 1080p capability. This conversion kit was the solution. Unfortunately the one I received might have been defective. As I turned everything on after the connections were made, it started out flickering my TV screen with static and green flashes before any image came out. Then when it finally did produce an image, it would distort the screen by producing multiple images of my 360 dashboard and would sometimes lose the whole image.

After three tries with similar results I decided to read the instructional pamphlet and it said to first turn off all power and disconnect any A/V cables, connect the adapter 1st, connect the HDMI to the adapter 2nd, 3rd connect the other end of the HDMI into the HDMI port on the TV, 4th turn on TV and last turn on 360. It must be done this way for everything to "initialize properly".

Well I didn't do it exactly like that initially and did it again the right way, it worked after a few hiccups. Though I tried it the next day and ran into the problem again. I finally had enough when it made my 360 get 4 red lights (not the red ring of death which has 3) so I plug my component cables back in and I'm returning this thing.

Pro: Noticed a higher quality in video on MadCatz HDMI conversion kit (using other cables that what was included) compared to the Monster 360 component AV cables.

Cons: Defective, at least mine was, I might exhange it for another. Price is high and the HDMI cable was too short! Only 3ft long, had to buy a 6ft Philips 1.3 HDMI cable at WM (under $35) which I didn't mind buying because I'll need another one eventually when I upgrade my A/V reciever to one that has HDMI ports.

The real question is where do I download from. There will be legal sites that garuntee all downloads to be 100% legal and virus free. There will also be downloading sites that are not legal and will have downloads that are full of viruses and pop-ups.

So here are some hints to help you determine which sites are legal and wich sites are not.

The first major thing to lookout for are the sites that say they are free. Nothing is free in this world. Typically what happens is while you are downloading psp games for "free", the web site is also hacking in your computer to install some pop-up ads or even worse a virus. The illegal sites use pop-ups to try and sell you something. The pop-ups are how they try to recoupe any money lost. You must also understant that all sites that use torrants are still considered to be illegal.

The second thing you need to keep and eye out for is the downloading sites that make you do alot of work for nothing. This is the site that will let you sign up for free. You get done giving all you information. Get done searching and picking out your game. After all of this, right before you download the game, they then ask for your credit card info. This is even worse because you usually pay per game and that is no different than your local video game store. While this may not be harmfull to you, it is just annoying. A lot of first-person shooters take the attitude that more is better: more guns, more levels, more destruction. But The Chronicles of Riddick isn't so convinced of that. Instead, it takes a minimalist approach.

There is little text to read through, the overall game doesn't last very long, and there aren't many guns to choose from. But you know what? The game's better for it.

Unlike many titles, Riddick lets the story guide the gameplay. That's why you don't rely on guns for a large part of the game and why you can't see in the dark until you get eye surgery. Near the beginning of the game, you have to input your DNA into the computer system of the prison before you can pick up certain guns. Before that happens, though (and later again, where you are unable to pick up those weapons), you have to rely on simple attacks like melee punches, shiv or screwdriver attacks, and shots from a tranquilizer gun.

Chronicles of Riddick acts as a prequel to "Pitch Black" and "The Chronicles Of Riddick". The enigmatic antihero namedRiddick escaped from one of the universe's most violent prisons, Butcher Bay. This game presents the story of how he escaped triple-max security.

Microsoft plans to take a charge and extend warranties. The glitches could give the firm’s rivals an opening. Three flashing red lights are joining the blue screen of death atop the list of things that Microsoft Corp. customers dread.

Troubled by an “unacceptable number” of malfunctions in the Xbox 360, Microsoft said Thursday that it had set aside more than $1 billion to take care of customers who suffered from the “three flashing red lights” error messages. “This is the largest warranty extension of its kind, ever,” said Richard Doherty, research director at Envisioneering Group, a consumer electronics consulting firm in Seaford, N.Y. “In dollar terms, there’s been nothing like this before – not for television sets, not for DVD players, not for home stereos.”

The admission of hardware problems also could prove costly to Microsoft’s reputation. The software giant is counting on the Xbox 360 Games to help it establish as big of a beachhead in the living room as the company now has in the office, with its dominant Windows operating system.

With 11.6 million Xbox 360s sold, Microsoft is the early leader in the current generation of game consoles, letting its customers not only play games but also surf the Web, buy movies and communicate via television. But the glitches could provide an opening for its powerful rivals, Sony Corp. and Nintendo Co.

Microsoft said it would repair or replace all game systems that go on the fritz and reimburse customers who had their broken consoles fixed. It also plans to extend the warranty, from one year to three, for broken consoles. “This problem has caused frustration for some of our customers, and for that we sincerely apologize,” said Robbie Bach, president of Microsoft’s entertainment and devices division.

As a result, Redmond, Wash.-based Microsoft plans to take a financial charge of as much as $1.15 billion for its fiscal fourth quarter, which ended Saturday.

The sum dwarfs the $429 million that Sony reserved last year to recall 9.6 million laptop computer batteries that could catch fire when overheated. Microsoft says the consoles pose no safety hazard and is not recalling them.

Microsoft declined to say how many of its consoles could be affected by the glitch, which causes the machine to freeze. But some analysts say the sizable financial charge indicates that Microsoft is expecting a high rate of failure.

“With the amount of money they’re putting in reserves, it looks like they’re expecting 1 machine in 4 to fail and require a warranty,” Doherty said.

Analysts said the warranty-and-repair program essentially added $100 to Microsoft’s cost for each of the consoles sold since the Xbox 360’s debut in November 2005. Microsoft sells its consoles for $299 to $479, depending on the size of the hard drive.

Because the charge is being taken during the company’s just-ended 2007 fiscal year, Microsoft still expects its Xbox division to be profitable in the current one.

Its shares fell 3 cents to $29.99 in regular trading, then slipped to $29.88 in extended trading.

“Microsoft has a lot of inventory in the channel, and all of it is probably subject to this failure,” said Van Baker, vice president and research director at Gartner Inc.

Analysts chalked it up to an expensive learning experience for Microsoft, which rose to prominence in the high-tech industry by making software, not hardware. With the exception of mice and keyboards, Microsoft started manufacturing computing hardware only when it launched the first Xbox in 2001.

“This is the problem of a company that has not been historically a large-scale manufacturer of a consumer electronics product,” said Michael Pachter, an analyst with Wedbush Morgan Securities. “These are the growing pains that you have when you’re learning how to do that. It’s good they’re facing the issue head-on and not running away from it.”

Richard Mitchell, lead writer for the Xbox 360 Fanboy blog, said concerns about the “three rings of death” had kept some gamers from buying the console. “The three-year warranty will go a long way toward assuaging their fears,” he said.

But some Xbox owners aren’t fully appeased, including Dustin Burg, a 21-year-old from St. Cloud, Minn. He is on his third Xbox 360 console – the first succumbed to the flashing three red lights and the second had a faulty hard drive.

“I really do think Microsoft is trying their best to make things better for their customers,” said Burg, who said Microsoft replaced both consoles and paid for the shipping charges. “At the same time, I feel they’re not being 100% upfront about telling us what’s wrong with the box.”

Peter Moore, vice president of Microsoft’s interactive entertainment business, declined to describe the cause of the problems other than to say that they involved a number of issues with the hardware.
