Every once in a while you just want to try something that you probably don’t need, but can’t help but being impressed by the cool factor. That’s pretty much the best way to explain the new Splashtop app for the iPad. When I heard about this from the homeservershow, there was a natural attraction and curiosity of what it would be like to run Windows 8 on a tablet. The concept of Windows 8 on an iPad almost caused my brain to explode. I immediately hit the app store and located the app so I could use it. I was a bit taken back by the price tag for pre-released software as it was on sale for $29.99, with a future price of $49.99. I thought it was a bit steep but considering that remote control apps are amongst the most expensive, I could not resist giving this a try. After all, this would be worth the $30 bucks to have a Win 8 tablet.

Installation

The first step is to download the streamer software. I ran into a self induced issue and I downloaded the version for windows 7 by accident. I clicked on the button not realizing there is a separate link under the button that takes you to a Window 8 specific version. Once I figured this out and got past that, things improved dramatically.

Once you install the steamer software you go through a simple configuration. Your GMAIL account actually provides the routing so port forwarding of your router or other complicated configuration is not required.

The streamer software

The iPad app

Once you install the iPad app, it immediately searches your network. If you signed in on your Window 8 machine with your GMAIL account, you can sign in on the iPad app and it will again find your system easily. The virtual keyboard is a bit small but it works very well and I love the idea that it has a numeric keypad.

I won’t get into all that Windows 8 can do but here are few shots right off my iPad of various screens as well as some of the apps . The navigation is very impressive and considering I was running Windows 8 from Hyper-V. The smoothness of the screen was very impressive. The iPad is actually a natural at running Window 8. I bet Apple enjoyed approving this app.

Issues

The main issue I ran into is periodic disconnects. Seamed to be more predominate on 3G/4G connection than when I was on a Wi-Fi, but annoying none the less. The other thing is they need to optimize it for outside network performance. The performance is very impressive when on your own network but when you are accessing it say through a mobile hotspot, the performance is not nearly as good and sometimes downright bad. Much worse than other remote control apps that I run such as LogMeIn.

Conclusion

In summary, this one of the coolest products I have seen in awhile. As a matter of fact, the iPad runs Windows 8 so well that you may forget you are on an iPad. The touch response is very impressive and far better that I had expected. I expected the clunky touch interface that I have seen on other remote apps, and was surprised how native it felt. The install and setup is as easy as you can get (once you have the right streamer software installed) and the configuration is very straightforward. Given the issues stated above, working off the fastest connection possible would be in your best interest. I really love this app and will definitely keep using it until the RTM version of Window 8 is released. One thing is for sure, that if this is an indication of what it will be like, the native tablets will be a must have when they come out.

Office PC

My old P5B lasted me nearly 6 years with a minor upgrade here and there… I am putting the finishing touches on a new watercooled workstation.

Intel Core i7-3930K

ASUS Sabertooth X79

G.SKILL Ripjaws Z Series 16GB

2 x EVGA GeForce GTX 680 (SLI)

4 x WD RE4 2TB in RAID 10 (Data)

Corsair AX1200

Lian-Li PC-60FNWX

Windows Home Server

I used to work as a network and server administrator, so I still have a preference for server-grade hardware albeit entry level. My data mostly consists of work-related files (research, whitepapers, sample data, software installs, etc.), but I do have about 20,000 song music library and a growing photo collection. I’ve only recently started ripping my frequently watched movies using My Movies.

Intel S3210SHLC Server Board

Intel X3060 Xeon Processor

8GB DDR2 ECC

4 x WD RE4-GP RAID 1 Mirrors (Data)

HTPC

Last summer, I finished off what I think will be my last Windows Media Center box. My wife and I cut the cord some time ago, and I’ve really tried to push to get that all-in-one experience…OTA tuners, NetFlix, Hulu, MyMovies, etc. The box is far lower power than my last one, and it’s quiet.

Silverstone LC-19 w/ slot-load Blu-Ray

Hyper-V Server

This was a major build last year. I needed a better sandbox for sample VMs running all kinds of enterprise-grade software. I needed a way to fire up instances of SQL Server, Oracle, Informatica, Business Object, SharePoint, etc. and this server fits the bill.

Networking

Most of my network is wired, but my wife and my laptops use wireless. My wife still uses the Lenovo S10-3T I put together for her a couple of years ago. The blog is no longer updated, but I used a lot of great info from lenovos103t

Cheap Server CPU – Yes Please!
AMD has introduced a new line of CPU products aimed more at the business server crowd but still worth looking at for those of us wanting mini-me business systems at home. The Opteron 3200 Series (http://www.amd.com/us/products/server/processors/3000-series-platform/3200/Pages/3200-series-processors.aspx#2). With low TDP (45w), High core counts (4-8), and budget pricing (how does $99 grab ya?). The Opteron 3200 series looks to be a great alternative for home server setups. AM3+ socket mobos are fairly cheap, including the beefy server class ones with all the RAM slots and NICs. Add to that rock bottom RAM and Bulldozer quad and octo cores. you have a pretty compelling system for not a lot of cash. VM server? Worth taking a look for your next build.
nVidia GTX680 – The New King of the Hill
The reports of the GTX680 (http://www.hardocp.com/article/2012/03/22/nvidia_kepler_gpu_geforce_gtx_680_video_card_review) are it’s the card to have for high end gaming, if you can find one. 2 New SSDs Hit the Market
Plextor M3 looks to be a strong drive (http://www.anandtech.com/show/5628/the-plextor-m3-review)

The OCZ Vertex4 (http://www.anandtech.com/show/5719/ocz-vertex-4-review-256gb-512gb) with the revised Indilinx Everest 2 controller shows a strong comeback to the weak debut of the original Everest controller (Petrol and Octane)

Extend your WiFi coverage
The D-Link DAP-1522 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833127256) is a great little access point to help extend your coverage or just to bridge the connection to remote wired connections. The GigE switch is a nice touch as well.
Same speed, but bigger
Mike adds in another Vertex 3 Max (http://thedocsworld.net/vertex-3-240-gig-max-iops/)IOPS (http://thedocsworld.net/vertex-3-240-gig-max-iops/) SSD (http://thedocsworld.net/vertex-3-240-gig-max-iops/) to increase his speedy storage space, but this time springs for the 240GB model.
Mmmmm….Pie whaaa?
Check out the cool little Raspberry PI computer (http://www.raspberrypi.org/). Starting at $25 and boasting HD playback capabilities. Any technology n00b can afford to tinker with. With a recent port of XBMC for it….Velcro HTPC anyone?

OK, I take back all the grief I told everyone on the forums about using an SSD in a Windows Home Server. That being said, this is probably not for everyone but if you have a spare SSD it is worth considering.

Okay let me set up the background of the experiment for you. Since I had set up the beta version, I’ve been using the IcyDock dual laptop drive enclosure with two 250 Gig Western Digital Caviar Black drives. Over the past year I noticed the system was getting extremely slow. Opening and closing the console took way too much time and I was pretty frustrated every time I had to do it. I’ve been toying with the idea of using SSD drive, however buying an SSD drive larger than 160 GB is very pricey. The first thing I wanted to try was to utilize an existing 60 GB drive I had just bought on sale, and use Acronis which I recently installed to restore the backed up partition onto a smaller drive. I used the restore from Acronis and was able to get the WHS OS onto a 60 gig SSD. Since I did not have anything on the “D” drive anyway, everything booted and worked perfectly with no errors. Since this was a Sata 3 drive, it was never my intention to leave it as I have a different plan for that, I just merely wanted to attempt to try it and to make sure that this is actually possible. Many have talked about the idea in the forums and have used various hacks to install the OS on an SSD. I found this option easier, safer, and worked extremely well for me.

Once I confirmed that it would restore correctly, and I fell in love with the performance of using an SSD on WHS, I opted to repeat the process this time using the cloning feature in Acronis to clone the IcyDock mirror onto an extra OCZ 240 Gig Vertex 2 that I had recently removed from my main system to replace with a faster drive. My plan was to use the extra space for something that did not need much protection such as iTunes where I could benefit from the speed.

The actual cloning process to go from the IcyDock mirror to the OCZ 240 SSD took about 8 to 9 min. The process was very simple, though I did have to manually adjust the partition sizes in Acronis so that there was 60 gig on the “C” drive and the balance on the “D”. The process went through with no errors. When it was done I was very pleased with the results. Everything I now do from loading the console to using apps from the desktop are much quicker. Even the actual boot time of the server itself is greatly improved. Granted you don’t boot your server very often, however for me it was a very painfully and slow process. I am very happy with the results and although it’s not something that I would recommend you go off and purchase, if you do have an extra SSD kicking around that 60+ Gigs, it is certainly worth considering. For me it also establishes the value of using Acronis on my WHS as it demonstrates the versatility that it provides as well as a quick way recovering your OS drive. I attached a quick benchmark of the result. It’s a tad slower running on Windows Home Server than on my Core I7, however the performance is still extremely fast giving you extra flexibility for your WHS. Overall I’m extremely pleased with the project and I am glad I could prove that Acronis would restore to a smaller drive and allow me to install an SSD into my system.
