			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Pay per click (PPC) is by far one of the easiest and quickest methods of driving targeted, consistent traffic to your website. While this may seem like a daunting method of advertising for some, it’s actually quite easy and can end up becoming that one marketing method that you can&#8217;t live without.</p>
<p> What I’d like to do today is provide some tips and techniques that I personally use when creating and monitoring PPC ad&#8217;s.<br /> Hopefully these tips will help you in your future marketing endeavors.<br /> <span id="more-209"></span></p>
<div style="font-weight: bold;">Experimenting With Different Search Engines</p>
</div>
<p>There are many PPC search engines, with some being better than others. The top two are Google and Yahoo, which was previously known as Overture. It&#8217;s a good idea to start your PPC campaigns with a small budget, spreading it out over a few different search engines to experiment and see where your target market may be lurking.</p>
<p> Generally speaking, I’ve found Google Adwords is better for more technically orientated products or services, including software, hardware, web design etc. Yahoo, on the other hand, is better for general consumer products, including insurance, toys, music etc.</p>
<p> What I wrote in the previous paragraph is very general, and you should analyze your campaigns carefully to see where they are performing their best. We’ll discuss this in detail a little later in the article.</p>
<div style="font-weight: bold;">Selecting the Right Keywords</p>
</div>
<p>The keyword selection process is probably the most important of all when it comes to creating your PPC ad&#8217;s. You’ll need to select keywords that are specific to your product or service offering, but you need to be careful not to select keywords that are extremely popular, as this may deplete your PPC funds sooner than expected.</p>
<p> The keyword selection process begins by asking yourself just one question:</p>
<p> <em>“If I was searching for a product just like mine, which words or phrases would I search for?”</p>
<p> </em>Using your answer(s) to this question as your base, you can then use a thesaurus and common sense to start building your keyword list with plurals, synonyms, similar words, etc.</p>
<p> To see which keywords your competitors are using, simply try searching for them. If you see a PPC ad along the side for your competitor, then note that keyword down and add it to your list.</p>
<p> Another way of coming up with great keywords is to use the overture search suggestion tool: <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/" target="_blank">http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/</a></p>
<p> Type in a set of keywords and it will list similar keywords, including the number of times that keyword has been searched for on Overture (Yahoo) in the last month!</p>
<p> There’s often a fine line between selecting keywords that are either too specific or keywords that are too general. Try to keep away from these, as they can often result in wasted CPC (Cost per click) funds.</p>
<p> A typical example of this would be an ad that I created recently for our latest product, <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://www.interspire.com/trackpoint" target="_blank">TrackPoint</a>, which &#8212; not coincidently &#8212; is an internet marketing return on investment (ROI) tracking tool.  Although the product is heavily geared towards internet marketing, using such a broad term would have made it virtually impossible to compete with the other advertisers.</p>
<p> The term “internet marketing” is searched for 825,674 times per month on Overture alone. Combined with the huge number of different advertisers that target this keyword, the top bid for “internet marketing” on Google AdWords is $13.84 per click! With an average of 240 clicks per day, a single day of advertising alone would cost $505!</p>
<p> Now, unless you have an extremely high conversion rate of visitors to sales, or you&#8217;re selling a high priced item that usually has a high customer acquisition cost, I suggest targeting more specific keywords. Not only will this decrease your overall competition with other advertisers, but it will also increase the chances of turning your newly found web site visitors into customers.</p>
<p> Back to my earlier example, I chose to be specific with my keywords. One keyword was “ROI tracking”, which is searched for 1,828 times per month on Overture and has a much cheaper top bid. This keyword is also more targeted to the product I was marketing, meaning that a large percentage of people clicking on my ad should turn into customers.</p>
<p> It’s also helpful to note that taking the top bid is not always necessary, and anywhere in the top 5-10 can generate great leads. This really does come down to budget and analysis.<br /> <br style="font-weight: bold;" /></p>
<div style="font-weight: bold;">Attracting People to Your Ad</p>
</div>
<p>Now that we’ve selected our keywords, we need to get those searching to click on our ad, which in turn will result in them clicking through to our web site and potentially purchasing our product.</p>
<p> One of the simplest ways to get peoples attention is to use their search keywords in the title of your PPC ad. This has been proven to increase click-thru rates on ad&#8217;s by over 50%.</p>
<p> Why? Simple. If the potential customer is searching for “ROI Tracking” and the title of a PCP ad begins with “ROI Tracking”, then their attention will be grabbed instantly. He or she doesn’t need to know much else, other than that the PPC ad is catered specifically for him or her.</p>
<p> One thing to keep in mind is that you can sometimes create a more relevant title by combining your different keywords into one PPC ad. For example, I could have easily used something like “ROI Tracking PHP Script” as the title of my ad, which effectively would have decreased my click-thru rate, but definitely caters my ad more to a specific audience. Once again, this comes down to analysis and adjustment.</p>
<p> Another important technique to attract attention to your ad is to differentiate yourself from your competitors. In our particular case, the majority of our competition offer hosted solutions, whereby they manage the software on their servers in return for monthly or per traffic fees.</p>
<p> Our product caters to a different audience, those that want more control over their software, as well as those not wanting to pay monthly fees.  So, in this example, I would make the title of my ad “Pay no monthly or per traffic fees”.</p>
<p> Next &#8212; and this is where experimentation is extremely important &#8212; we need to create a description for our PPC ad that will attract the potential customer and let them know that our product is exactly what they are searching for. To do this, I start my ad&#8217;s description with “Track PPC, campaigns &amp; search”.</p>
<p> Finally, it’s good practice to add a “Call to action” at the bottom of your ad. If you’re not familiar with this term, its usually an instruction to tell the person to do something, such as “Click here to view a demo”, “Download Now”, etc.</p>
<p> Marketing experts seem to agree that the average human needs to be prompted to click on an ad or take action, so we&#8217;ll add this line to the end of our PPC ad&#8217;s description:</p>
<p> “Track PPC, campaigns &amp; search. Try demo!”</p>
<div style="font-weight: bold;">Reducing Click-Thru&#8217;s</p>
</div>
<p>Sometimes it’s important to reduce the number of clicks your PPC ad is receiving. This could be because you are attracting people who are only after free products/services, or even the wrong target market.</p>
<p> The two quickest ways to reduce click-thru&#8217;s are to make the description of your ad more targeted and to add the price of the product to the ad.</p>
<p> Making the description more targeted (as I’ve discussed above) can reduce your overall click-thru rate, but potentially increase the likelihood of a click resulting in a purchase.</p>
<p> In my earlier example, by adding the words “PHP script” to the description, we are effectively filtering out those looking for a hosted solution, downloadable software or even those with a server that isn&#8217;t capable of running PHP scripts.</p>
<p> We also increase the targeting of our ad because we now know that the majority of those clicking on the ad are looking for a PHP script, which is exactly what our product is.</p>
<p> Secondly, by adding the price of the product you are selling to the end of the ad, you instantly eliminate those looking for free products, and target those willing to purchase your product or service.<br /> <br style="font-weight: bold;" /></p>
<div style="font-weight: bold;">Tracking Your Clicks and Conversions</p>
</div>
<p>The fundamental core of a successful advertising campaign &#8212; whether it be a PPC ad, banner ad or even newspaper ad &#8212; is knowing whether or not your ad&#8217;s are actually converting into sales or not.If your ads aren’t making you money then you’re more that likely better off saving your advertising dollars and adjusting your ad&#8217;s or using your marketing budget elsewhere in your company.</p>
<p> Both Google and Overture have built in tracking and conversion tools that you can use to get a holistic view of your current PCP ad campaigns. You can even use external tools which let you add conversion code to your website to tell you exactly which of your ad&#8217;s are converting into sales and which aren’t. This is often referred to as knowing your ROI or Return on Investment.</p>
<p> We need to know exactly how much money we are making per dollar spent on every PPC ad. If the ROI is positive and we are making more money than we are spending, then the ad is working and we can use this knowledge to further improve our other ad&#8217;s or increase ad spending for that particular ad/set of keywords.</p>
<p> If, however, our ad&#8217;s are costing us more than they are returning, then we can reduce our spend, change our approach, or remove these ad&#8217;s altogether. It’s a rather simple formula, but frustratingly ignored by many advertisers.</p>
<p> You must track your ad&#8217;s if you want to succeed with any form of Internet advertising. You should also constantly monitor and adjust your ad&#8217;s according to how they are performing, your return on investment, etc.</p>

<p>Hopefully I’ve provided you with a clear insight into PPC advertising and techniques that you can use to improve your advertising campaigns. It pays &#8212; pun intended &#8212; to do your research and understand your target market, because the rewards can sometimes be much more than you expected.</p>

<p>Running Google AdSense on your article website is a quick and easy way to generate revenue for your writing efforts. We&#8217;ve been using Google AdSense on many sites running our article manager, ArticleLive, both for testing and for real life revenue generation. We found after some testing and research that there were various techniques we could implement to optimize our AdSense ad’s and increase revenue. Today I&#8217;m going to share some of my favorite strategies.<br /><span id="more-205"></span><br />Direct from the horses mouth (move this to the beginning)</p>
<p>My first suggestion is to read Googles list of tips and tricks for optimizing Google AdSense:<br /><a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="https://www.google.com/adsense/support/bin/static.py?page=tips.html">https://www.google.com/AdSense/support/bin/static.py?page=tips.html</a></p>
<p>If you’re running a forum, here’s a quick list of tips direct from Google:<br /><a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://adsense.blogspot.com/2005/10/six-adsense-optimization-tips-for.html">http://AdSense.blogspot.com/2005/10/six-AdSense-optimization-tips-for.html</a></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold;">Positioning</span></p>
<p>First and foremost, where you place your ad’s makes a huge direct difference in visibility of the ad, and therefore increases your chance of getting clicks. While some people stress that your ad’s should be highly visible upon first visit, i.e. top of the page, in some cases having your ad’s placed at the END of your article can actually increase click thru’s. Let’s say our article is a review of a specific digital camera, the Cannon IXUS 800 IS. (Incidentally, I love this camera and lost mine overseas).</p>
<p>When a user visits my site to read my review he or she is most likely going to read the article before clicking on any ad’s. It’s the reason they came to my site in the first place. By positioning my ad’s directly after my article on the same page I know my visitor has finished reading my article and may be ready to take action. An ad that offers a cheap price for the same camera I’m reviewing is now highly likely to get clicked on, especially if my review has been a positive one.</p>
<p>Try various ad placements. Tweak and test until you find something that works for you.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold;">Look and Feel</span></p>
<p>Your AdSense ad’s should blend into the look and feel of your web site. Make suer you use the same font type,  size and color so advertisements don’t look like ad’s. On the other hand, sometimes visitors become ad blind so you need them to stand out. Again, test, test, test.</p>
<p>As I mentioned above, if you place your ad’s at the end of the article there’s a good chance your visitor will click on them. Keeping their style consistent with the rest of your page will make them appear as normal links, and therefore your visitors wont get scared off and think that the only reason you wrote the article is so they click on the ad.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold;">Increase Relevancy</span></p>
<p>Google uses what we call robots to scan your web page to locate the best ad’s to serve. If Google does a poor job of recognizing your articles topic then the ad’s it displays will not be highly relevant. Improving the relevance of the ad’s displays means improving the probability that your readers will find interest in an advertisement and click on it.</p>
<p>There are a few things you should do to increase relevance. Firstly, use descriptive headings and try to be specific. For example, if you’re writing a review about a Canon IXS 800 Digital Camera, then your title should look something like: “Canon IXS 800 Digital Camera Review”. As obvious as it seems, some people tend to forget this and use less relevant headings such as IXS 800 Review.</p>
<p>Be sure to include the topic of the article in the page title as well as adding a detailed meta description and meta keywords. Keep them as focused as possible, using similar keywords found throughout your web page. Adding alt tags to your images can also help. For example, an image of the camera could have an alt tag of: “Canon IXS 800 Digital Camera Picture” and you could even add a descriptive caption to the image.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold;">Cater to Niche Topics</span></p>
<p>Targeting niche topics instead of general ones will result in two distinct benefits. First, your natural search engine competition is reduced dramatically. You get more targeted visitors interested in your niche topic, who will be shown more relevant ad’s, resulting in higher click rates.</p>
<p>Let’s take our digital camera website as an example. If I was to write a generic article about digital cameras I’d be competing with thousands if not millions of competitors. My Google Ad’s would be generic and the chance that my visitors will click on these ad’s is significantly reduced. On the other hand, however, by catering to a specific, targeted topic, I decrease my natural search competition, I increase my relevance both with visitors and ad’s and increase the likelihood of an ad click. </p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold;">Use Correct File Names</span></p>
<p>The file name used for your web page is extremely important to Google AdSense and the ad’s that it shows. Using a simple test on my desktop PC, I created 2 blank HTML files with different names and added the Google AdSense code, nothing else. The first one, playstation-games.html showed these ad’s:</p>

<p style="text-align: left;">There was absolutely no other content in those files and the files were located on my desktop, so Google could not scan my web page for content.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold;">Filtering Non Relevant Ad’s</span></p>
<p>With all the technical prowess of the Google robots, they can get it wrong. If your site is displaying totally irrelevant ad’s in relation to your websites content then there’s something wrong with your site. It could be that the robots are having a hard time crawling the site, or maybe the way your web page has been coded makes it hard for the robots to tell what topic the page is about. If the majority of the time, however, the ad’s are relevant but some irrelevant ones are still showing, then its time to start filtering.</p>
<p>By monitoring the ad’s on your site you can take a list of the domains of URL’s that don’t match the topic you are targeting, then, inside your Google AdSense account you can add this list of domains to your “Competition Filter”. By doing so, Google will stop showing ad’s from those domains.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold;">Rotating Colors</span></p>
<p>Sometimes regular visitors to websites become accustomed to ad’s and their brain filters them out. We call this ad blindness. If you know your site gets a lot of repeat visitors you could test automatically rotating color schemes for your ad’s.</p>
<p>Color rotation is supported by Google and lets AdSense automatically rotate through 4 different color variations of ad’s so your ad’s have a higher chance of being noticed by repeat visitors.</p>

<p><span style="font-weight: bold;">Add More Content</span></p>
<p>The more content you have on your website, the more ad’s you can display. Having more content also means more pages listed in search engines and more pages for your visitors to browse through, meaning more website traffic. The more ad’s you can display, the higher the chance of a click thru.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold;">Testing</span></p>
<p>You should constantly test and tweak your website for better ad revenue and click thrus. By comparing different ad types for different periods or on different pages you can determine which ad’s work better for your site. In saying this however, it’s best to test for a short period of time, optimize and move on. Spend your time creating rich, valuable content rather than optimizing for better click thrus. In the long term, great content always wins in generating more traffic to your site, which in turn generates more click thrus to the ad’s and puts more money in your pocket.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold;">Conclusion</span></p>
<p>There are plenty of other ways to optimize your ad’s and I’ll be writing about them in future tutorials. For now though, use what I’ve taught you in this article to better position your ad’s, testing placement, colors and ad sizes. You never know which little tweak might result in an increase of clicks.</p>

<p>You would think that marketing trends would be closely aligned with consumer trends, since effective marketing depends on getting your messages to appear where the highest concentration of qualified eyeballs are focused. That isn&#8217;t always the case, however, because trend-focused marketers tend to place an inflated value on revolutionary technology and early adoption.</p>
<p>Thankfully, the majority of consumers permanently relocate their attention with much less frequency than marketing bandwagon drivers. Still, missing a trend or sticking with a has-been spells opportunity lost at best and negative returns or loss of market share at worst.</p>
<p>Since your trend-marketing returns are only as good as your ability to make educated guesses, here&#8217;s some advice to help you avoid turning educated guesses into marketing messes. The following list features the top 10 internet marketing trends for 2010, in no particular order, and tells you whether to invest, test or let it rest.</p>
<p><strong><strong><strong>Trend #1: Search Engine Optimization<br /></strong></strong></strong><strong><strong>Advice: Test<br /></strong></strong>Sites with relevant content and credible links will continue to rule the search rankings in the coming year, but 2010 has the potential to reveal a few new standards. As the volume of web content continues to grow, consumers will demand even more relevant and personalized search results. That means search engines will be looking for more relevant and personalized content from publishers and brands. In fact, the search engine algorithms are already beginning to pay more attention to date of publication, geo-location, mobile device browsers, past behavior and social media content.</p>
<p>Don&#8217;t abandon your current SEO strategy in search of personalization, but make sure you allocate a portion of your budget to testing content, keywords and links that are targeted toward niche audiences. Test keyword and link placement in social media, local content and mobile websites, and make an effort to more frequently refresh some of the content you devote to search engine rankings. Once the search engines have tested these new search targets and revealed some concrete standards, you should be prepared to invest accordingly.</p>

<p>To take advantage of content nesting in 2010, your website content needs to be nested in as many content aggregation sites as possible. For example, a lot of people search for videos on YouTube. If you have a video on your website and it&#8217;s not also on YouTube, people on YouTube won&#8217;t bother searching for your website. To them, YouTube represents the total number of videos available to them on their topic of interest.</p>
