  • Freeplay is turning 10 years old this year! It's on April 10 to April 19, but if you want to get involved, the Freeplay Fete is looking for stall holders to displaying their creations - Saturday April 18, 10am-6pm, or you can present at the festival's Unconference.
  • Startup Weekend is a global active movement of grassroots entrepreneurs, and is happenening this weekend, March 27-29. Plenty of stuff going on!

  • Square Sounds is on this weekend, celebrating all things chiptune! We were joined by one of the co-organisers of the festival Eugene Davoren-Britton and Swedish chiptune wizard Anders Carlsson (better known as Goto80).

• News:
  • A sad (or happy) day for Internet Explorer, with the long-lived browser finally being retired by Microsoft. Its replacement is named (currently) "Project Spartan". Impressive, huh?
  • At SXSW, Yahoo have announced that they want to remove the password.
• Events and Opportunities:
  • Youth Without Borders are holding the Spark Engineering Camp in Melbourne from July 6 to 1, helping school students from non-traditional backgrounds to engage in university life, and get excited about engineering. If you're interested in participating as a student or mentor, check it out!
  • Freeplay Fete with games, workshops and a DIY craft stall where game-makers will be displaying their creations - Saturday April 1, 10am-6pm, venue TBA
  • CSSConf 2015 is on next week. It'll feature talks by leading Australian web designers and developers, and the schedule includes:
    • Pre-conference event at Bartronica, 7pm Wednesday March 25;
    • CSSConf at the Meat Market, North Melbourne, March 26 and 27 ; and

  • BitTorrent client µTorrent has come under fire for including bitcoin mining program EpicScale in its software package, installing it without users' knowledge.

  • The Apple Watch has landed! You can spend anywhere between $499 and $14,000 for the shiny. The team discuss the pros and cons of Apple's latest baby, and the advertising strategy that they're employing.

  • CSS Conf is on March 26-27 at Melbourne Meat Market - tickets have sold out, but there is a waiting list, as well as a Decompress event on March 28.
  • Infoxchange is running their YouthSpark Career Pathways for 18-26-year-olds who are looking for a career in IT, and looking for a foot in the door.

  • The world's first grid-connected wave power station has been switched on in Western Australia.
  • News has surfaced that Dutch-French tech company Gemalto (who manufacture the majority of the world's mobile SIM cards) was hacked by the NSA and Britain's GCHQ five years ago (and didn't know about it), potentially compromising the company's millions of customers. Gemalto's response was less than reassuring.
  • Netflix have announced their Australian launch date - March 24!
  • Federal Government politicians were available for a chat briefly this week, after it was discovered that a number of them use their publicly available parliamentary emails on the Apple messaging service.
  • The encrypted messaging service Wickr appears to be the app of choice for many who want to keep their comms private - not least Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull.
• Mike's Games Wrap:
  • The Interactive Games and Entertainment Association have released the results of their study into games sales in 2014 - a total increase of 20 percent.
  • For developers, Epic have announced that the new Unreal Engine 4 will be free, and Unity have announced that Unity 5 will be too.
  • Surprise Attack have been releaseing some cool indie games lately. Some on the horizon include:
    • Space Sluggers
    • Oscura: Lost Light
    • A Druid's Duel
    • Fort Meow
  • With regard to the big titles, Mike's just playedThe Order: 1886 on PS4 - his verdict? A great looking game, but with lacklustre gameplay.
