rComplex, that strange, stylish, story-driven Canabalt-y thing that won Free Indie Countdown back in December has been turned into a short film! Zenithfilms (which, as best I can tell, is actually a dude named Gareth Morgan) collaborated on the film with Rekcahdam, the guy who made the original game, and the results are actually pretty visually striking.

Sure, the budget obviously wasn’t huge (and for some reason it uses the same painful voice acting that the original game did), but it’s an attractive, faithful indie film remake of a neat little game, and there’s something to be said for that. I mean, dig the green and blue objects the protagonist slides under and jumps over. That is some attention to detail right there.

Between this and that Every Day The Same Dream short film, I hope adapting indie games into indie shorts becomes a certifiable thing. I would love to see what a Joe Danger movie would look like.

After working on it for five years, Pixel released Cave Story in 2004. Now, after working on it for five years, George & Jonathan have released their album “The Best Music”, an album constructed entirely using Pixel’s chiptune tracker Piston Collage. And it’s seriously incredible.

Isn’t it beautiful? It’s like some sort of vast, wonderful, aggressively poppy Alex Mauer album or something. Even the song titles are preposterously awesome: “Sludge Mansion”? “GUH”? “Troll Roll Call”? Straight up, this has to be the happiest music on the planet, and you’re a fool if you don’t download this immediately.

A little backstory: George & Jonathan are actually George Michael Brower and Jonathan Baken, two rad dudes who have done some very cool solo chiptunes previously but whose powers combined are clearly more than any of us can fathom.

No, seriously. The mobile game that iPhone users have been diggin’ on since December of last year is now available open beta on Android for free. And even in beta, it’s got more polish than any Android game we’ve ever seen.

Seriously, it plays as well as it appears to in the footage above – everything, from the launching to the multitouch, is totally seamless and intuitive. Hopefully once it’s released, this game does well in the Market and starts a trend of highly-polished games on Android, because fellas, we need ‘em.

Here, I want you to play this so bad that I’ve even posted a QR code of the game to the right. Just pull out your phone and scan it with Google Goggles, click the Market link that pops up, and download. You will not regret it.

Update: Okay, so the beta isn’t showing up in the Market for a lot of users, and nobody is quite sure why. Rovio Mobile is aware of the issue and looking into it – in the meantime, keep your eyes the dev’s twitter and on the game’s AppBrain page to see if the issue gets resolved.

The finalists have been announced for IndieCade 2010, and once again, some really, really cool games made it into the running this year. How do we know they’re great? Because, not to toot our own horns, we’ve played a bunch of  ’em.

Interestingly, this year’s IndieCade is expanding to include  more traditional games (or are they non-traditional at this point?), such as the in-depth tag variant Humans vs. Zombies and the “open source” tabletop board game Tic-Tac-Totum. Should be interesting!

You can find the full list of finalists here, but there are more than a couple we can tell you firsthand about: Auditorium, BIT.TRIP RUNNER, Continuity, Every Day The Same Dream, Fractal, LIMBO, and VVVVVV. Phew, that’s a lot of indie game coverage.

here’s a thing: chevy “chevyray” ray johnston was named after a car company. it is rumored it is in the back seat of one of these cars that he was conceived. not so much conceived as contracted. chevrolets are advertised as being built “like a rock.” fitting, for i suspect he’ll be sinking like one to the miry depths of some toilet somewhere.

sophie houlden. what can be said of sophie “girlflash” houlden. for a start: she’s a girl. by this i don’t mean anything about women game developers or anything. i’m just saying that i recently watched a timelapse video of her developing a game:

Hey Nick,

Well, I can appreciate you think the bytejacker readers will be interested (on account of how I’m taking part) but I don’t want anyone getting too excited, thinking there will three really great games coming out of this because, let’s face it, Arthur Lee And Chevy Ray are quite incapable of making games that are even remotely entertaining.

I mean, if it was a competition in ripping off cave story, or ripping off flixel then maybe, just maybe, these guys could do something remotely on a par as the awesomeness my entry will be.

but don’t fear, I shall make sure it stays entertaining, and by entertaining I mean making a game so awesome the other guys will be painfully embarrased to even call themselves game makers, it will make the parents of Arthur and Chevy want to go after them with chainsaws so they can give the ‘having children who don’t suck’ thing a fresh start.

suffice to say whether or not those babies can, I most certainly will, bring it.

(if they have a problem with that, they will have to tell it to the cleaning lady on monday)

Tae K, the dude you might remember from his relatively bangin’ Mega Man remixes, has released a new album. Titled “Star Fox 64 TKRMX”, he’s given 10 of the tracks from the old N64 game the hip-hop remix treatment. And the results are mostly great!

Like any themed remix album, not every song on the album is a hit, but there’s a lot of good stuff here; you should definitely listen to “Prologue,” “Star Wolf”, and “Mission Accomplished” if you know what’s good for you.
