Fleased Forum on Gas Lease Termination, 3/14/13

On March 14, Concerned Residents of Oxford, CDOG and C-CARE together hosted a Fleased Forum for Chenango County landowners and leaseholders on gas leasing issues with Joe Heath, Esq. and Geologist Ellen Harrison of Fleased.org. It was filmed and is now available online as well as on cable access.

Presentations covered a range of topics including the implications of gas leases on insurance coverage, property uses, and mortgages; how mineral right deeds mean you are permanently giving up your mineral rights; how Norse’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing affects the leases they currently hold; how lease assignments (sales) impact current leases; what the recent force majeure decision in Binghamton means for expired or soon-to-expire leases in Chenango County and how to terminate a gas lease after the primary term (actions must be taken to truly expire leases, even if they are decades old).

"Save The Southern Tier is a broad-based network of existing grassroots groups who are working to stop fracking from happening in our home and in the state at large. CATSKILL CITIZENS REACHES OUT
TO RESIDENTS OF “TARGET” COUNTIES

Governor Cuomo hasn’t leveled with New Yorkers, so no one can predict exactly when or where high-volume hydraulic fracturing may be introduced in the state. One thing is already clear: politically powerful constituencies like New York City will be given a measure of protection that won’t be extended to rural communities. Last summer the Cuomo administration leaked a plan to let the gas industry “frack” five Southern Tier counties while temporarily keeping other areas of the state off-limits. Now those five counties - Broome, Chemung, Chenango, Steuben and Tioga - are in the industry’s crosshairs.
Next week Catskill Citizens will begin mailing an informational brochure to over 190,000 households in these five target counties. It poses the question “Are you ready to be part of Governor Cuomo’s experiment?” The brochure describes industry exemptions from key environmental laws that can lead to drinking water contamination, and points out that individual property rights are no match for powerful gas drilling corporations.

Yesterday Governor Cuomo indicated that New York State will file for a 90 day extension in order to buy time to complete fracking regulations before a legal deadline expires on November 29th. This extension gives the state until the end of February to publish regulations without having to hold public hearings or face the increased scrutiny that those hearings would provide.
It’s irresponsible for the governor to set a deadline for promulgating regulations before the ongoing review of public health impacts is complete. To make matters worse, it appears that the DEC is preparing to issuing fracking rules (these are different than the regulations) within a matter of days or hours – also before the health review is finished, before the SGEIS is published, and before regulations are in place. These rash decisions can only be interpreted one way – Cuomo intends to fast track fracking without regard for the health or safety of New Yorkers.

Grassroots group rallies against hydraulic fracturing, Evening Sun

Frack Free Chenango is the fourth in a series of rallies across the Southern Tier in which residents of each county are rejecting Governor Cuomo's proposed "sacrifice zone." A Protect Our Towns Rally followed the YMCA Halloween Parade through Norwich in which we marched alongside a fantastically decorated float complete with musicians. Parade-goers cheered us on and we were awarded second place in our category in the parade. Joining us at the rally were anti-frack candidates Dan Lamb for US Congress & Howard Leib for NYS Senate and anti-frack speakers from many of our Chenango towns as well as our neighboring counties. The day came to a close at the Elk's Club with two phenomenal local bands Fetish Lane and The Zydeco Trailblazers.

On Monday, January 16, Patrick R. McElligott of Guilford in Chenango County will be beginning a fast for clean water outside Senator Libous' office in Binghamton. His goal is to obtain a meeting with Senator Libous who has declined to meet with his own constituent. Mr. McElligott would like an opportunity to voice his opposition to hydrofracking. C-CARE Halloween Parade, Norwich

Please join C-CARE this Saturday at 2 PM as we march in the Norwich Halloween Parade during the Pumpkin Festival! We are marching against fracking with the theme "Warding off the Vampires." We have a float with drummers, decorated signs to carry and necklaces of garlic to distribute to ward off any vampires.

The parade starts promptly at 2 pm. We are meeting up between 1 and 1:30 PM on Division St, one street north of the Hale St light on the right side of Route 12/ South Broad St .

Bring a drum or sign, volunteer to carry one of our props, wear a costume or simply just attend! If possible, let us know to expect you by writing ccare at frontier.com

Demand protection from the hazards of fracking

Chenango Community Action for Renewable Energy (C-CARE) placed second marching in the New Berlin 50th Youth Days Parade on Saturday, 8/27. The group was previously awarded second place in the Chenango County Fair Parade on 8/9. Parade goers experienced a spirited, drumming group of community members marching with signs, banners, windmills and giant sunflowers carrying messages related to promoting renewables and raising awareness of the dangers of gas drilling and fracking. The people along the parade route waved and cheered.

C-CARE supports the development of sustainable, renewable energy in Chenango and neighboring counties and believes the long-term economic well being of our county requires a clean natural environment that supports sustainable agricultural practices and recreational enterprises.

Be sure to watch Chip Northrup's presentation on the false promises of shale gas economics and what we can do locally to preserve Chenango County by prohibiting heavy industrialization.
