Three for the floor

Nymfo & Black Sun Empire - Battlefish [Commercial Suicide]
Wait till you hear the second drop and you will understand what I mean. This tune always goes off!

SKC - Off Guard Remix [Commercial Suicide]
Such a big rolling tune which you can mix in every tune nice and smooth. The half time second breakdown is great and the crowd loves it each and every time.

Klute - Glue Sniffer [Commercial Suicide]
A big classic for me on the great Commercial Suicide label!

Three for the sofa

Hidden Orchestra - Undergrowth [Tru Thoughts]
Saw them and this tune live at Outlook Festival last year while I was waiting on the boat with a massive hangover, so always have this beautiful festival in mind when I hear this tune.

Ricardo Villalobos - Dexter [Playhouse]
I think I listened to this 37 times on a random Sunday the other day and still don't get bored of it.

Nicolaas Jaar - Essential Mix [BBC ]
A mix from last week and I know already this will be in my playlist for a long long time.

One all time favourite

Portishead - Roads [Polygram Records]
I’m a really big fan of really depressive tunes, so u can imagine this one is a winner. Especially the live version in New York with the Philharmonic Orchestra.

When I grew up I always wanted to be a...
Pilot, I was obsessed with planes, when i was a kid and used to visit my grandmother's house. I loved it because she had a high rise apartment near Tehran international airport, and planes would fly super low over head and I could see every detail on them, I would go up to the roof and sit and watch all day when I didn't have school.

You wouldn't expect it, but sometimes I listen to...
Well these days I'm always on a plane or traveling, and i like to go to a gig with fresh ears so don't listen to any house music or stuff with beats, and also i like to chill when traveling, now this is going to sound really like I'm trying to sound sophisticated with this answer but I'm not lying, i honestly listen to loads of classical stuff, airport lounges and people watching becomes so surreal when you have this on your headphones. One of my favs is Ennio Morricone

My signature dance move is...
When I was younger and we went raving me and my friend used to do the Leroy Prodigy dance move in time with each other.

My favourite YouTube video at the moment is...
There is loads and loads and loads of funny stuff, so not gonna mention any of those, but i think everyone should see this from start to finish,

Some people really need to listen to what this guy is saying..

My next gig is...
A secret warehouse party in East London for an italian record label party.

After I finish my set you will find me...
Chatting with everyone, looking for the tequila.

My perfect hangover breakfast is...
A glass of ice cold water, a banana, a zinc tablet and a full English breakfast.

If I get a weekend off I like to...
Turn off the phone, order in a pizza, have some ice cold beers in the fridge and watch match of the day.

I love...
My Family and Music, and that's it.

I fear...
Nothing, actually I'm lying, I am a bit of a nancy when it comes to the dentist chair. Hahaha had a very bad experience when I was a kid!

7 Ways to Fear Silence - Sigha

'Our Circula Sound' label boss Sigha expertly balances his output on the hallowed line where immersive soundcaspes meet linear Techno rhythms. As well as heading up his own label, his musical direction has also led to a strong affiliation with Scuba's Hotflush imprint and a string of releases to suit. As Sigha will be spinning for We Fear Silence & Blueprint here at Cable on Saturday, we wanted to pin him down for an insight into his musical tastes. This is Sigha's seven reasons for fearing silence...

Three for the floor

Truss 'Beacon' (Our Circula Sound)
Forthcoming on my Our Circula Sound imprint... A gritty 303 lead track that manages to stay forward thinking and steer clear of the over used clichés that often come with heavy use of that bit of kit.

MPIA3 'WTTP' (Avian Records)
This is coming out on Avian and is something I'm kicking myself for not signing myself. Absolute monster of a track. Raw pounding Acid, so so simple but perfectly mixed and arranged. Together with the flip 'Casual Welding' this is in line to become my favourite 12" for the floor this year.

Ben Sims 'New Blood' (Robert Hood Remix)
Every time I think I've been playing this one too much recently, I find myself drawing for it again. Always makes for the perfect injection of funk into a set at the right moment. I could have included almost anything by Hood in this list to be honest but this and his Phuture remix are the most recent things from him I've been playing.

Three for the sofa

Bee Mask 'Elegy For Beach Friday' LP (Spectrum Spools)
Anything off the Bee Mask LP, sublime soundscapes that always leave me feeling like I'm wandering through another world.

Desire - 'Under Your Spell' (Italian's Do It Better Records)
I'm not entirely sold on the middle section with the conversation to be totally truthful, but the chorus and refrain make this track 'spine-tinglingly' good. Music that makes me want to fall in love.

The KVB 'Never Enough' (Beko digital)
Dark and brooding, filled with longing and lyrics I wish I'd written. Perfect.

One all time favourite

I hate this question, its far too final. Music is so dependent on mood, so my favourite track changes pretty regularly. I would happily go on record and say its probably something off Loveless by My Bloody Valentine. Or maybe Something off NIN's Quiet Tracks album. Probably. If you asked me the same question tomorrow though, I'd pretty much guarantee you a different answer.

My Bloody Valentine 'Only Shallow' (Creation Records)
Seen as Sigha couldn't pick one, we selected a My Bloody Valentine tune we dig...

Logan Sama Interview

You recently climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, any future expeditions planned?

It was a very challenging experience but I feel very fortunate I was able to go and see such a beautiful part of the world and raise some much needed money for charities whilst doing it. I hope to repeat it in 5 years time. In the meantime I am going to be more active raising money for Help For Heroes and Save The Children.

Good work! Can you tell us about your new project 'Generation Next'?

I just saw that there were very few outlets for young Grime MCs to be heard these days with fewer and fewer pirate radio stations or even youth clubs for them to practise their craft. YouTube is a democratic place where anyone has the same size box in which to show off their abilities and we have seen a whole generation migrate over there. I just thought that if someone like myself co-signed a project for under18 MCs it could help give them the push they needed to get recognised.

You have been an integral part of the Grime scene for a long time now, who has been the most exciting producer over the years?

Oh I couldn't say who is the MOST. I never have favourites and try not to rank art against itself because I feel that is unhealthy and defeats the purpose. I will say though that over the years I have loved music from a wide variety of producers and it is great that some of them are still going just as strong today as they were in 2003!

Good answer. What makes a Grime event stand out from the rest?

Energy. Passion. Rawness. It's not really about image and being flash, it is about getting that raw reaction from the listener. That is why when you see a good Grime set live there is very little that can match it!

What musical direction do you think 'Grime' is heading in? Where does it's future lie?

More of the same! Right now is a very healthy time for independent music releases and for alternative sounds to those offered by the mainstream.Grime is doing very well without label backing or major media coverage which is very reassuring. There's lots of people making and playing Grime now that are doing an amazing job!

Agreed! Outside of the genre what else do you listen to?

I listen to alsorts. US Rap, 90s rock, 50s swing allllllll different types of music! Whatever takes my fancy to be honest. I do love a bit of Old School UK Garage too, especially when the sun's out. All 2 weeks of British summer!

You were celebrating with Licked Beatz at their 2nd Birthday what was your highlight?

Seeing the people all come piling into our room for my set with Riko, Discarda and MIK. I love getting people HYPE in the rave and that's definitely what happened!

10 Questions for Calvertron

Bristol based artist, Calvertron aka Alex Calver is growing more popular by the day. Becoming renowned for sets that mirror his diverse production sounds, Calvertron is an internationally accomplished DJ, impossible to pigeonhole and quickly emerging as a front runner in the ever growing global bass music scene. We caught up with Alex for quick-fire interview ahead of his set at Chew the Fat! & Dub-All Or Nothing on Friday night here at Cable.

1. When I grew up I always wanted to be...
A Footballer, I was football crazy as a kid, a big Man Utd supporter, I was captain of the school team and played for Cardiff boys team (until I moved away at a young age). Like a lot of kids I suppose.

2. You wouldn't expect it, but sometimes I listen to...
I love all kinds of music, nothing too obscure really but can appreciate most types of music. Should I be embarrassed when admitting to be a Coldplay fan? (it helps me relax on flights)

3. My signature dance move is...
When I was a kid I was the best head-spinner in the school (breakdance stylee). When the teacher went out of the class I used to run to the front and a get a quick head-spin in before they came back. Was all fun and games until my hair started falling out at 11 years old! I think I'd probably break my neck if I tried that now. (I haven't gone bald yet though thankfully)

4. My favourite YouTube video at the moment is...
A personal favourite of mine is 'Badgers', gets me every time, gotta love that snake! (I'm easily amused)

5. My next release is...
My remix of 'Skepta - Peace Not War' just dropped on iTunes, I'm currently finishing off a 6 track EP, it will probably be released on my label 'Jack Knife' mid June.

6. After I finish my set you will find me...
Hunting beer and kebabs.

7. My perfect hangover breakfast is...
Full English obviously! Don't come near me for a couple of hours if there were baked beans involved.

8. If I get a weekend off I like to...
Stay as far away from nightclubs as possible, you would probably find me on a golf course somewhere.

9. I love...
Music, travelling, my friends n' family and my Dad's lasagne (best on the planet!)

10. I fear...
War, spiders and turbulence (an occupational hazard!)
