Why Homework Is Bad for Your Kids

Post by April Peveteaux

My first grader brings home homework four nights a week, and I hate it. It's not the homework itself, which is based in math and science. I'm thrilled she's learning complex calculations at such an early age. But why does she have to drill when the school day is over? When, in fact, the main reason she goes to a progressive school is the lack of testing and, one would assume, homework.

I'll tell you why. We live in America, and the American parents stood up last year to demand homework for our 5- and 6-year-olds. It's just too bad that those who wanted to see a little cutie sitting at his tiny desk doing homework didn't realize that this logic is hurting our children academically instead of preparing the little tykes for lifelong success. And the homework glut is not doing much for getting everything done before bedtime, either. Homework has got to go.

All a parent needs to do is take a look at Finland (I know, those Scandinavians do everything right) to see how education policy that emphasizes equality and a love for learning over competition and school "choice" is winning this game. When the Finns do get around to homework and testing (not until age 16), the scores are consistently at the top of the entire world.

Of course, no homework until high school isn't the only element at play in the Finnish education system. All teachers have master's degrees and are paid well. All schools are the same, regardless of how much income inequity exists in the neighborhood, and there are no private schools. Cooperation between schools is emphasized, and competition is out. Children don't even start to school until age 7, and from all reports, these are happy kids who are learning without the stress of their American counterparts. And they're learning more than our kids, as well.

Yes, there are other countries that do require homework that are scoring quite well and are frequently in the top spot above Finland. South Korea, for example, where students have tutors every day after school and work far harder on their studies than the average American child. Sure those kids in South Korea are killing it in test scores, but a heck of a lot of them say they're miserable. Considering the answer to the question of what a parent wants for her child is almost always, "I want my child to be happy," that model is not nearly as attractive as the one going down in Finland.

Homework once a week would be exciting for the kids instead of a drag. Or like one element my daughter's school implements -- read to your child every night, have your child read to you, and have your child read to herself -- that's useful, entertaining, and something we should be doing regardless of school policy. But it seems to me that grade schools need to axe the homework because it's not helping anyone. Least of all the mom who has to harass her kid to get it done before dinner.

What do you think about homework for grade school kids?

Parents Egg on Daughter During Fight at School Bus Stop

Post by April Peveteaux

As a mom to two spunky kids, I'm constantly videotaping their crazy antics. Occasionally I post adorable videos on YouTube, then post them on Facebook. Because I know everyone really wants to see a super cute 4-year-old belt out "My Favorite Things," right? Even if you're a bitter, child-hating, Facebook frenemy, you can just skip that video and search for more ironic posts or some food porn from your more sophisticated friends. No harm, no foul.

But you know what other people really don't want to see on their social media? YOU EGGING ON YOUR DAUGHTER TO BEAT UP ANOTHER CHILD. No, really. It's totally true. Yet some poor excuses for parents did just that. Check out this horrible situation, then come back and let's talk.

So not only did a proud parent post this disturbing video for the world to see, he drove his seventh grader to the bus stop so she could attack another child. All the while cheering her on.

Naturally both mom and dad are facing charges of child endangerment and the father is also facing charges of battery. Can we also charge them with child neglect? Because Timothy Taylor and Shequita Cade just failed their daughter in a huge way, and taught her that she cannot trust her parents to take care of her. A lesson, I'm guessing, she's been getting her entire life.

So, thanks Timothy and Shequita for screwing up another kid and causing a huge amount of lifelong pain! Great job. Oh, and the other mom isn't very happy about the situation either. Way to make friends in the community!

What the heck, people?

Is this punishment enough for these boneheads?

8 Natural Ways to Beat the Afternoon Slump

Post by April Peveteaux

Who's tired? If you raised your hand, or couldn't find the energy to raise your hand, you are not alone. Between work, kids, and the myriad of other obligations, we're all exhausted. Yet, our to-do list does not make allowances for the daily nap. It's time to kick start your energy reserves!

Instead of pumping caffeine into your body, there are ways to feel alert and alive in a way that does not involve chemicals. Here are 8 ways you can boost your energy, naturally.

1. Run Up the Stairs

Or around the block, or in place. You'll give your brain a jolt and your blood will start pumping.

2. Have a Snack

Instead of chowing down on a big lunch, snack throughout the day to keep your energy levels steady. Some suggestions for healthy snacks that won't give you a sugar crash include: almonds, snap peas, and grapes.

3. Hit the Water Cooler

Sometimes when you're feeling sleepy, you're actually dehydrated. Water is the best way to keep your body feeling great and awake when it really needs a drink.

4. Skip the Booze

Just don't reach for the booze if you're feeling tired and thirsty. And if you feel rundown on a regular basis, avoid alcohol as much as possible to sleep better and stay energized.

5. Meditate

No, not a nap. Just a time out to clear your head. Whether it's five minutes or half an hour, your brain will be recharged and you'll feel refreshed.

6. Get Outside

Oxygen is a natural stimulant and you will get drowsy if you're just sitting slouched over your desk, shallow breathing. Take a walk outside and breathe deep for an instant pick-me-up.

7. Make a List

Feeling overwhelmed with work and responsibilities is a quick road to exhaustion. The next time your afternoon demands a nap, make a to-do list instead. Seeing everything you have to do in black and white can help you feel more in control and give you the boost to get back to it -- without the zzzzzzs.

8. Reach Out and Touch Someone

Connecting with others through a stimulating conversation is a fast way to re-focus and wake up. Avoid simply texting or instant messaging, however, and have a face-to-face or voice-to-voice instead.

How do you make it through the afternoon slump?

8 Hanukkah Cocktails to Light Up the Night

Post by April Peveteaux

Get ready for eight nights of light, chosen people! Starting tomorrow night, Hanukkah is ON. For most of us that means lighting the menorah, spinning the dreidel, and chowing down on some delicious latkes. Why not add some cocktails to this year's celebration? After all, what family gathering is complete without some cheer from the bottle?

Here are 8 cocktails that will light up your celebration in the time it takes to sing the blessing.

1. The Hammer

Named after Judah Maccabee, the hammer will deliver. Just don't drive home after having a few of these.

1 ounce gin
2 ounces ginger soda
1 teaspoon lemon juice
4 ice cubes
Lemon wedge

1. Place 4 ice cubes in a cocktail shaker. Add gin, ginger soda, and lemon juice and shake until chilled and fully mixed.

2. Pour into martini glass, garnish with a lemon wedge, and serve.

2. The Sazerac

A classic holiday cocktail for any religion, serve these around the menorah to warm everyone's belly.

Pernod
1 cup bourbon
1/2 teaspoon bitters
4 teaspoons simple syrup
5 lemon twists

1. Pour Pernod into serving glasses (martini or cocktail), then pour it out.

2. In a shaker, add ice, bourbon, bitters, simple syrup, and one lemon twist. Shake until chilled and combined.

3. Pour into prepared glasses and add lemon twists for garnish.

Makes: 4 cocktails

3. Pimm's Cup

For the old school in your crowd, a Pimm's cup is the perfect light and sassy drink for celebrating.

2 ounces Pimm's No. 1
4 ounces lemon-lime soda
3 mint leaves
Lemon twist
Cucumber round

1. Muddle mint leaves, and place in the bottom of a glass. Pour in Pimm's and lemon-lime soda and stir to combine.

2. Garnish with cucumber round and lemon twist, and serve.

4. Irish Coffee

No, Hanukkah isn't exactly an Irish holiday. But your bubbe might want a little something in her coffee, rather than going full-on party during the lighting. Try this winter warmer-upper.

2 ounces Bailey's Irish Cream
6 ounces hot coffee

1. Stir, and serve.

5. The Honey Bee

Add some dissolved honey to your gin drink, and give a little sweetness to the holiday just like the sweetness of military victory.

6. Pomegranate Kir Royale

From Cat Cora, this is a holiday cocktail that will please those who love the bubbly. Also, it will make that whole dreidel game a lot more interesting.

7. The White Rabbit

For those of you who want to get a good night's sleep during Hanukkah, may I suggest the vanilla vodka and milk concoction of the White Rabbit? Enjoy.

8. The Drunken Pharoah

You may want to save this for Passover, but if you've got some Manischewitz and you want to use it creatively, this is your ultimate Jewish holiday cocktail.

Mom Still 'Sees' 3 Children She Lost in Horrific Christmas Fire

Post by April Peveteaux

Last Christmas the worst thing that could ever possibly happen to a mother happened to Madonna Badger. This mother of three little girls lost all of them, as well as both of her own parents, in a house fire on December 25. I think all of us can relate to Badger's suicidal feelings -- and attempt -- over the past year, as well as her ex-husband's desire to harm Badger and her boyfriend, who was also in the house. I honestly don't think I could go on after suffering such a horrific tragedy. It's simply unthinkable.

But Badger is starting to come out of the pain and find a small amount of peace a year later, as she told Matt Lauer on TODAY. While getting far away from anything that reminds her of Christmas seems like a great idea, and working with children who have lost their families an even better one, the other thing that is keeping her going is somewhat shocking.

Madonna Badger says she still sees her girls, and they talk to her.

Clearly Badger is a religious woman, perhaps more so after this loss, which helps explain her strength. In addition to her fear of what will happen if she were to take her own life, Badger has a newly developed sense that heaven does exist, and her daughters are waiting there for her. In the meantime, her daughters appear to her and tell her everything is going to be OK. Wow.

I think we all wish that we could connect with someone we love who has passed on, but it never seems to happen. Or rather, it's a rare occurrence and can sometimes be attributed to something else. My dream about my grandmother after she died, for example. It could be explained away by my subconscious really wanting to talk to her one more time. Or it could be something extraordinary. I'm a skeptic, but would love to believe.

Badger does believe her 7-year-old twins, Lily and Sarah, came to her and their words keep her going. It would be so comforting to know the spirits of your loved ones were out there, and could comfort you when you need it most. Certainly it's helpful to Madonna Badger, a woman who needs it more than anyone else right now. For her sake, I truly hope seeing her daughters gets her through her darkest moments.

Have you ever talked with someone who has passed?

Sneaky Gluten-Free Thanksgiving Stuffing That's Better Than the Real Thing

Post by April Peveteaux

Here comes the holiday gorge! For those of us who are either trying to be healthy or on a restrictive diet, this is the most challenging time of the year. Albeit wonderful, joyful, and fat-full. If you're on a gluten-free diet, you may think that means skipping the stuffing. But oh no, my fellow wheat-avoiding foodies. There are ways of indulging in all the goodies without all of those things that are bad for you. Many, many, delicious ways.

Let's start with the most amazing stuffing you'll ever eat -- the gluten-free part is simply a bonus. While chorizo is basically the best sausage ever, I used an andouille to give mine a Cajun kick. Choose the sausage the love, and enjoy this original, super yum, gluten-free stuffing on Thanksgiving.

Gluten-Free Tortilla Chip-Chorizo Stuffing

adapted from FoodNetwork.com

The key to keeping this recipe gluten-free is four-fold: One, you must only buy gluten-free tortilla chips. Either look for a gluten-free label, or read the ingredients list and make sure there aren't any sneaky items such as soy sauce included in the recipe. Two is to watch that chicken broth. Many chicken broths you buy in the store contain gluten. It HAS to have a gluten-free label or you can assume gluten is contaminating that broth. Three is to make sure your sausage is gluten-free. Chorizo is usually naturally gluten-free, but some sausages are not. And four is, of course, buying gluten-free bread for the bread cubes.

Prep time: 30 minutes Cook time: 1 hour

Ingredients

9 tablespoons unsalted butter
12 ounces dried chorizo, chopped
4 bunches scallions, chopped
4 (4-oz.) cans chopped green chiles, drained
2 teaspoons ground cumin
3 cups gluten-free chicken or turkey broth
2 large eggs
1/2 cup chopped fresh cilantro (optional, as some people hate it)
1 (13-oz.) bag gluten-free corn tortilla chips
8 cups stale gluten-free white bread cubes
2 cups cubed queso fresco cheese
Salt and pepper

1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees and butter a 3-quart baking dish. Melt 8 of the 9 tablespoons of butter in a large skillet over medium heat.

2. Add chorizo, scallions, chiles, and cumin to the melted butter and cook, stirring, for about 5 minutes. Add the gluten-free broth and simmer.

3. Whisk the eggs and cilantro into a large bowl. Add the tortilla chips, bread, and cheese. Season with salt and pepper then pour chorizo and broth mixture into large bowl and combine.

4. Pour the mixture into the baking dish and dot with the last Tablespoon of butter on top. Cover with aluminum foil and bake 30 minutes. Uncover and bake another 30 minutes.

Makes: 12 servings

5 Ways to Help Hurricane Sandy Victims

Post by April Peveteaux

Hurricane Sandy, aka, Superstorm Sandy has wrecked huge parts of the East Coast of the United States and is still causing trouble. As a recent transplant from New York City I found myself glued to the television, while being tucked away in California. As friends, family, and the rest of the eastern seaboard hunkered down and tried to stay safe, I’m happy to say only one friend (that I know of) has been injured. Property damage, however, is a whole other issue. For those of us safely far, far, away from the destruction, it’s time to help. You can send your prayers out to those in the path, and you can also send your money, time, or support. Here are five ways you can help the victims of this epic storm.
1. The American Red Cross (http://www.redcross.org/)
Always there for those of us in need, the American Red Cross is already housing victims of the storm in their shelters. If you’re nearby, there is a need for volunteers to staff the shelters. Of course the Red Cross can use your financial donations, and is also asking that we all go out and donate blood platelets for the victims of Sandy. If you’re in New York City, you can also donate blood at the New York Blood Center (http://www.nybc.org/index.jsp).
2. AmeriCares (http://www.americares.org/newsroom/news/hurricane-sandy-emergency-outreach-update-1029.html)
At this point AmeriCares medical supplies should be well on the way to the states that have been battered by Sandy. From tetanus shots to life-saving medicine, AmeriCares will be on hand to care for our citizens. You can donate money to help fund the supplies and the delivery to those in need.
3. Feeding America (http://feedingamerica.org/press-room/press-releases/hurricane-sandy.aspx)
Through a network of food banks, pantries, and soup kitchens; Feeding America distributes food, water and other supplies as needed. They have already mobilized and are operating out of New Jersey. Donate to help their efforts in the affected area.
4. The Humane Society (http://www.humanesociety.org/)
Don’t forget about the animals displaced by Sandy. The Humane Society is already on the ground helping animals who were not able to find shelter, could be trapped, or otherwise in danger due to this historic storm. You can donate to the cause and get more people out on the streets.
5. Virginia Disaster Relief Fund (https://payments.vi.virginia.gov/donatenow)
Virginia has had it rough for the past few years between tornados, earthquakes, and now another hurricane/storm. You can help Virginians directly by the disaster relief fund for the state and help get the state for lovers back on track.
And if you are in New York City and want to volunteer to help out your neighbors, NYC Public Advocate Bill de Blasio (http://pubadvocate.nyc.gov/) is looking for volunteers.

How are you helping?

Rapper Lil Reese’s Girl Beating Video Should Get Him Boycotted

Post by April Peveteaux

Rapper Lil Reese has been behaving badly and -- shocker -- doesn't seem to give a damn what anyone thinks. Classy, Lil. Real classy. The cellphone video, which was just released, shows a verbal argument getting physical as Lil Reese punches a young girl, knocks her to the ground, and begins kicking her as she screams.

It looks like this disturbing incident takes place inside a house, possibly the young girl's home, as she asks who let Lil Reese and his entourage inside. Honestly, there is no way to paint Lil in a positive light. That doesn't mean he won't try, though! Check out his Twitter response. Jerk.

Warning, this video is disturbing.

See this video on The Stir by CafeMom.

Yeah, so Lil Reese is saying this video is old, and so what? Or in his incredibly incoherent words: "The haters tryna see a mf Dwn lol Dey gotta b broke and bored wanna upload sum shit from years ago damnn we winnin it's 2 late...#3hunna"

If you can't interpret that mess, Lil Reese thinks people who are releasing this incredible act of violence are "bored" because they're just "haters." Bullshit. Own up to what you did, Reese, and make it right. Otherwise, everyone needs to turn their back on this thug.

Of course what is especially disgusting about this whole incident is the support Lil Reese is getting in light of his brutal beating of a young girl. Just like Team Breezy, fans and peers just want to line up to defend a man who beats down a woman.

What is wrong with people? And what will it take for people to condemn horrible behavior instead of standing up for someone because he has a smidgen (or in the case of Chris Brown -- a ton) of fame? It's time to not only stop buying the music of people who decide to physically harm other people, but to speak out as well.

What do you think?

Brad Pitt’s Chanel No. 5 Ad Still Has ‘The Talk’ Hosts Snickering Behind the Scenes

Post by April Peveteaux

Well, I had a super fun time last week on the set of The Talk with Julie Chen, Sara Gilbert, Sheryl Underwood, Aisha Tyler, and Sharon Osbourne (or Mrs. O, as she's affectionately called). A few bloggers were invited to hang out in the front row during the show, do a little live tweeting, and then have lunch with the hosts of this daytime talk show that lets it all hang out. Yes, Brad Pitt was mentioned multiple times. Why wouldn't he be? You've seen this ad, right?

Seriously you guys, I just went to a taping of Dr. Phil and there was not 1/100th of the fun vibe that was offered up on The Talk. Here's what else was going down.

1. They Do Worry About Offending You

Well, maybe not you, exactly, but people they talk about on the air. When I complimented them on their ability to be unfiltered while the cameras are rolling, the ladies were quick to point out that there were consequences. As in, some celebs have PR agents that do not want them to go on a show that is so spontaneous. The hosts do say, however, there is a difference between being mean and what they say about their fellow Hollywood stars. As Sheryl Underwood pointed out, her Brad Pitt Chanel No. 5 spoof was filled with love. Filled!

2. The Ladies Do NOT Hang Out

Of course we wanted to know who was buddy-buddy outside of the office. But as Gilbert and Osbourne explained, they're together all the time, any more and they'd be sick of each other. (Note: That was also said with a smile.)

3. But They Do Love Each Other

It was pretty apparent not only on set, but backstage that all of these ladies have a certain amount of love and respect for each other. Unlike other shows (ahem), you don't see these women interrupting each other, trying to get the best joke off, or treating each other with disrespect. Refreshing!

4. Sharon's Got a Secret

About a certain former co-host on another show who gives his headshot out with his phone number to beautiful ladies. But she's not telling who that dude is, on the air at least. I will say this -- the man cannot eat a cheeseburger after a few drinks.

5. They Have Favorites

We got to see Mike & Molly's Billy Gardell on the set with the ladies, and he became a quick favorite. Other favorite guests include John Stamos (especially to Underwood, she can go ON about John Stamos), Allison Janney, Tyler Perry, and the list went on so long that you realize there were a LOT of favorites.

I'm not saying who my favorite host was, as they were all so incredibly welcoming and kind to all of us, but maybe you have one.

Who is your favorite The Talk host?

'Blue Bloods' Star Jennifer Esposito Says Celiac Disease Got Her Fired

Post by April Peveteaux

What is it with CBS and their television stars? It seems like every year a very public fight breaks out between management and talent and, wow, can it get ugly. This time it's Jennifer Esposito, the star of Blue Bloods who is calling out CBS for what is seemingly a complete lack of consideration for her health, and getting a Twitter revolution started after getting the boot, rather than getting treatment.

While Jennifer Esposito suffers from celiac disease and claims that she's being let go from the show -- and held to a contract -- because of her illness, CBS is saying that she can't do her job properly, so see ya!

Let's take a look at both sides, shall we?

The official CBS statement claims that Esposito can only work on a limited, part-time schedule and therefore must go. Esposito claims that she needed time for treatments due to celiac and a doctor recommended a reduced schedule, but CBS refused. Which basically sounds like, "Hi, I need some time off for my health," with the response being, "No. You're fired."

Granted, I'm a fellow celiac so I'm going to lean sympathetic. But it doesn't take someone with a disease to see the disparity here. I mean, how many times was Charlie Sheen allowed to stop production due to drug addiction before he was let go? How many actors are treated for "exhaustion" while the production is held up?

Celiac is a very serious disease, and most often wildly misunderstood. Every celiac is different, and Esposito says she needs some vitamin IV treatments, as well as less stress. While I might just need to eat gluten-free and a ton of coffee to work those long hours, all of our bodies react differently to this auto immune disease.

Still, it seems odd that if you have a medical condition your workplace would not be accommodating. In fact, there are laws against this kind of discrimination. What the heck is going on over there?

Depressing Hormone Therapy News Makes Hot Flashes Sound Like Fun

Post by April Peveteaux

Not that long ago every woman "of a certain age" was given a prescription of estrogen as soon as she got a little snippy. The idea being that hormone therapy could solve all of the ills of menopause: the hot flashes, the mood swings, the vaginal dryness that no one wants to talk about.

While these symptoms were the primary reasons ladies were asking their doctors for some relief, the side benefits of reducing the risk of chronic lady diseases like breast cancer and osteoporosis were also touted around the medical world.

Turns out, those benefits are hardly worth the risks of taking hormone therapy. And if you're currently on hormone therapy, you should probably stop.

More studies of the estrogen, as well as the estrogen plus progestin replacement therapies, confirm what scientists believed to be true in the original study of 2005: Long-term hormone replacement therapy increases your chances of disease. Specifically, heart disease, dementia, gallbladder disease, stroke, incontinence, and blood clots. Yikes. I don't want any of that action, do you?

Even though estrogen only (but not estrogen plus progestin) does decrease the risks of osteoperosis and breast cancer, that benefit is not even close to outweighing the risks listed above. In fact, if you do add progestin to the mix, your breast cancer risk increases.

While the study does emphasize that a short-term therapy meant to benefit severe forms of menopause symptoms is not included in this study, it still makes me wary.

Personally, I would love it if I could enter into menopause knowing there was a magic pill to take all of the symptoms away. But as someone who has a family history of dementia and heart disease, I do believe I will take a pass on hormone therapy when the time comes for me to consider it. Jeez, menopause sounds like a pain in the ass, right?

Are you taking hormone replacements? Are you going to stop?

How Not to Be the 'Hated' Parent This School Year

Post by April Peveteaux

We all know that parent. The mom who cannot accept that her child is disrespectful and instead insists he is "right." The dad who tells his kid that school doesn't matter. Yikes. Teachers do not love these parents that are undermining the classroom and therefore their own child's education. But there are also more minor offenses a parent can commit that can add up.

Of course, many parents who wind up on "the list" don't even realize it, which is part of the problem. If you want to guarantee that you're not that parent that all the teachers dread having in their classroom, read on. Here's how to be a parent teachers love.

Be Informed

Read every communication that comes from your child's school. Be it email, a note stuffed in her lunch box, or a packet in the mail -- this information is being sent to you for a reason. We all forget the occasional permission slip or parent/teacher meeting, but flat out ignoring school communication is not only lazy, it causes stress for everyone involved.

Understand That You Don't Know Best

Unless you're also a teacher and have the same degree and years of experience in the classroom as your child's teacher, guess what? You're not the expert here. By second guessing everything from curriculum to dress code, you're telling your child's teacher that you know how to run things better than they do. How would you feel if your child's teacher came into your office and told you that you were doing it wrong?

Be Available

For all parties involved, it's a great idea to be ready and willing to sit down and talk with your child's teacher when necessary. It doesn't matter if it's because of a problem, or a positive, discussing your child and her academic career with her teacher is always productive. If you can never make parent/teacher conferences or open houses -- you're hurting your child.

Don't Trash Talk

If or when you have a problem with your child's teacher, take it to the teacher. Parents who gossip at pickup rather than trying to problem-solve are a teacher's worst nightmare. It kills morale and sets up a negative "us vs. them" dynamic. This isn't good for anyone, least of all you and your stress levels.

Are you "that" parent?

3 Argument-Free Ways to Encourage Your Child to Get Good Grades

Post by April Peveteaux

We're just a few months away from midterms, mom and dad! Perhaps your kid is a solid student and always brings home the As. Congratulations! But for many more parents out there, it's a struggle to get kids to focus and buckle down at homework time.

The truth is, as parents, we can sometimes be just as anxious about our child's grades as he is himself. If you have report card day circled in red on your family calendar, why not consider doing a few things differently this year and taking the pressure of everyone. Here are three ways to encourage your child to get good grades, without the battle.

1. Talk About Goals, Not Tasks

Nothing makes a kid tune out more than expounding the value of finishing his algebra homework. Instead of nagging and hovering, have a continuous discussion with your child about what he wants to do in life. Emphasize that the more he knows, the more options he will have when he has that degree in hand. The more subjects he has mastered -- and top grades he has earned -- the more opportunities that will come his way.

2. Give Her a Room of Her Own

If your child doesn't already have a study space that promotes concentration while inspiring her creativity, work with her to create that space. Make sure she has input, but that you both keep the goal of studying in mind. Consider blocking social media and chat on her computer as long as it's in her "study space" just to cut down on the distractions. At the same time, allow her some fun -- art work, posters, a fun desk and chair -- so she'll feel good about buckling down when it's time.

3. Get Into a Routine

Now that he has the motivation and the place to go, start on day one. Lay down the rules of study time whether it always happens the minute he gets home from school, the hour before or after dinner, or what happens to work with your family's schedule. Make it a given, rather than a negotiation, and never schedule anything during that time to show him that you value his hard work as well.

Read This Before You Join the PTA

Post by April Peveteaux

Back-to-school time isn't only for the kids, you know. At most schools you're expected to be almost as involved as the ones that are getting that education. In fact, as budget cuts hit public schools, parents may find themselves spending more time in the classroom than they ever thought possible.

The parent-teacher association at your school is most likely a necessity and, hopefully, a partnership that helps make the school better for your kids. So naturally, you should join up and do your share, right? Well, not so fast.

First let's take a look at the pros and cons of being a PTA member.

PROS

You will be making your child's school as good as it possibly can be.

You could meet some new parent friends.

Your time will be really well spent, as most schools need every bit of help they can get.

Your child will see that you truly care about what goes on in his life.

You'll get the inside scoop on the school gossip.

More from The Stir: 10 Reasons I Could Never Be PTA President

CONS

You'll get the inside scoop on the school gossip.

You may feel your time is better spent with your children instead of at their school.

You'll meet some crazy new parent friends/enemies.

Your work schedule will mean your volunteer schedule sucks up your weekends.

So, are you joining the PTA?

5 Ways to Get Information Out of Your Kids

Post by April Peveteaux

You know how this conversation goes: You say, "How was school today?" Your child answers, "Fine." You then ask, "What did you do today?" The universal response is, "Nothing." We've all been there and most likely did the exact same things when we were kids and our parent was trying to give us the third degree. So why do we do the same thing over and over again?

It's time to break out of the generic question rut, parents. Ask these five questions after school instead, and actually get some good information about what your kid does all day.

1. Who was absent from school today?

Having your child focus on someone else allows her to relax for a minute and realize she's not going to get drilled for the entire car ride home. Also, you might find out who your kid spends time with and, of course, which kid might have a communicable disease.

2. What did you not eat in your lunch?

First of all, if you keep getting the same answer, you know not to waste your time and money on that particular food again. Second of all, it can be a gateway to talk about what actually went on at lunch -- which can be the most interesting time of the day.

3. Do your friends think you have too much homework?

Asking what friends think along with your child can help open up a closed mouth. After all, it's easier to tell your mom what Sarah says than what you did. The followup question is, of course, "Do you agree?" This question has the additional benefit of discovering what classes kids find difficult and what teachers they really like.

4. What was the funniest thing you heard today?

If nothing else, your kid will start to giggle when she thinks about it. Then hopefully, you'll learn a little bit about her friends and teachers.

5. Did Jeremy get in trouble again today?

That's right, pick out the kid who usually is the first one to be sent to the principal's office. Your kid will love to share the juicy stuff, you just have to know how to ask. Bonus points if this helps you understand "kids these days."

What do you ask your child when he gets home from school?

5 Tips to Start Your Day Completely Stress Free

Post by April Peveteaux

Heading back to school means a whole new morning ritual. Say goodbye to summer slowness, and hello to organized chaos! Getting a good breakfast into your kids while packing a lunch and making sure you're out the door on time for drop-off can be totally crazy making. The opportunities for arguments, whining, and general crankiness are aplenty in the earliest hours of the day.

No more morning madness, parents! It doesn't have to be a frenzy as your kids head back to school. Try to start your day in a calm way by making these five changes to your routine.

1. Set a Consistent Wake-Up Time

It's so tempting to sleep in, or let your kids sleep in, when you're feeling especially exhausted. But if you keep your alarm clock set, and your child's set, at the same time every day, you can eliminate the begging for "just one more minute" of sleep.

2. Lay Out Clothes the Night Before

We all know we should do this for our kids, but it's easy to forget. Take a minute the night before to talk with your child about the next day's outfit, then set it out. Don't forget socks and shoes!

3. Give Everyone a Job

Whether it's as simple as making each child responsible for their own lunch box or scrambled egg duty, give everyone a special job to do every day. Again, include your child in the decision making to ensure maximum enthusiasm.

4. Fast & Easy Breakfast

Instead of acting as short order cook, make the rule that everyone eats the same breakfast. Whether that's oatmeal, omelets, or a cereal option, get breakfast on the table with very little discussion. Try some quick and easy options and even non-traditional ones to make every eater happy and agreeable in the morning.

5. Weekly Lunch Prep

Instead of raiding the fridge in the morning, plan your child's lunch for the entire week, with her input of course. On Sunday divide what you can five ways and have it ready to grab and go.

Even if you can only incorporate one of these tips into your morning routine, that's minutes shaved off the busiest time of day. Try to lower the stress of morning madness and start your day off happy.

10 Savvy Back-to-School Shopping Survival Tips

Post by April Peveteaux

It's almost time to pack up the swimsuits and bust out the khakis, mom and dad. While it might seem like a good idea to just pull out your laptop and take care of your kid's back-to-school shopping needs online, kids grow. Also, sizes can vary so you really have to bring along the whole crew when you head out to the stores.

Don't panic! You can make a fun day out of the experience without blowing your budget, or your top. Follow these 10 back-to-school shopping survival tips and your child will be dressed sharply and you'll be back home enjoying those last days of summer in a flash.

1. Timing Is Everything

Head out first thing in the morning, right after breakfast. A tired, hungry kid is not the best shopping companion. Then, you can promise lunch out if all goes well.

2. Study School Policy

Even if your child's school doesn't require a uniform, it could have some surprising rules. Don't be caught off guard with a bag full of brand advertising t-shirts if logos are forbidden in the hallowed halls.

3. Carry Cash

It's tempting to get "just one more" super cute t-shirt even though you know it's out of budget. If you only allow yourself to carry cash on shopping day, you'll have no choice. Additionally, it's a visual cue to your kids that there are limited funds.

4. Negotiate Wisely ... With Your Kids

To avoid the head butting that can come along with shopping with kids, negotiate before you walk into the store. If your rule is that you get final approval on every purchase, make that clear. But consider bending the rule for good behavior, or allowing one kid's choice for every four adult ones.

5. Don't Drag It Out

Your child's attention span for clothes shopping will not be as extended as it might be for texting or Xbox playing. If you meander around the mall, you could spend all day on this venture. Instead, have a plan before you go and stick to it.

6. Bring Provisions

You don't want to spend time trying to find a drive-through for a bottle of water. Pack water bottles, granola bars, and any other quick energy boost kind of snacks that will keep everyone going until lunch time.

7. Outsource

You know who might love shopping for school clothes with your kid? Grandma. Fully research that option, if for nothing else, as a supplement to your day.

8. Know the Sales

Pick up your Sunday paper, and go online to your favorite store websites. You would hate to spend more on the same pair of jeans if only a trip down the street could have saved you serious cash.

9. Don't Spend It All

Reserve some of your back-to-school budget for a few weeks into the school year. Between after-school activities and the latest trends that your kid may not have picked up on, there will be a need to add to the closet after the first bell rings.

10. When to Go Online

Okay, so you can do some shopping online. Once you've established the proper shoe size and jacket size, buy things like rain gear and winter coats online for a better deal and more options. Buy a size up, and you'll be set for inclement weather days throughout the year.

What are your back-to-school shopping tips?

Famous Chef Makes Over Mexican Fast Food Menu and I'm Sold

Post by April Peveteaux

The soldiers in the war on child obesity (and just regular adult obesity) often take aim at fast food. After all, most fast food is highly caloric, processed, and cheap. Which means people who don't have time, or money, to cook healthy food at home, run for the border. This is one of many things celebrity chef, Lorena Garcia, had in mind when she was asked to develop new menu items for Taco Bell. Garcia was enlisted to help the Bell move into the future of food, where everyone is becoming more and more aware of what we put in our bodies.

Personally, I was totally skeptical. Which is why they invited me to an intimate dinner atop the Ritz-Carlton in Los Angeles to try it for myself. I know! I'm fancy.

So this is where I enjoyed my Cantina Bowl with citrus-herb marinated chicken, black beans, pico de gallo, guacamole, crisp romaine lettuce, and fire-roasted corn salsa.

You may not get this experience, nor the delicious watermelon mojitos, but you will get a great meal for $5. Also, you'll enjoy cilantro rice and creamy cilantro dressing, which I could not have because I'm gluten-free. This is all 550 calories, btw. Split it, and you've got a delish, filling lunch for 225 calories. Nice.

While I was convinced through pure luxury, I also asked Garcia why I should start taking my kids to Taco Bell. After all, I've been anti-Bell for awhile and more of an antibiotic-free, organic, Chipotle lover. Garcia's answer was really inspiring -- as is she. Really, I love that lady.

Garcia first addressed the organic issue. For so many people organic is a luxury. Providing high quality food with simple ingredients is her priority. Providing that same food at an affordable price means organic is not an option. Still, she stands by her food, and is incredibly proud that Taco Bell is taking this leap into healthier, less processed food that you can see (instead of hiding inside a squished tortilla). She also told me I should tell my daughter that it's important to take progressive steps, just like Taco Bell is doing. That small changes turn into big changes. She also was like, "You can afford to buy organic, other people can't. I'm helping those people," but not exactly like that. That's my interpretation that is tinged with guilt for being able to afford organic. Didn't I tell you she was inspiring?

At the end of the day, Taco Bell and Garcia made a believer out of me with the Cantina Menu. I may still put a ban on the Doritos Locos Tacos Supreme, but I can order up a cantina bowl (sans rice and dressing) and not feel as guilty for driving through for dinner.

Also, on July 5th if you go to Taco Bell's Facebook page, you can get a Buy One Get One Free deal for the new cantina menu! And if you don't like it, it's guaranteed so you can get something else to eat instead. Win/win/win.

Are you going to try this new menu?

10 Great Big City Hotels Worth the Trip

Post by April Peveteaux

It's summertime! Time to get out on the open road with your family and enjoy those precious moments of summer vacation. Some of you love the beach, others go the amusement park route, and a lot of us choose to staycation.

But for the more adventurous family, big city travel will offer a thrill a minute. The culture, the taxis, the crowds! At the end of the day you're going to need a place to crash after all that activity. Luckily, there are hotels even in the big cities that are kid-friendly and can keep you and yours together for the duration.

New York -- The Plaza

Steps from Central Park, FAO Schwarz, and of course -- you're on Eloise's turf. If that's not a big enough selling point, The Plaza offers a children's concierge, and childcare for when you want to head out for adult time. If you're more of a downtown family, try the other hotel on the park -- Washington Square Hotel -- where your dollar goes further, and you can hang with the West Village crowd.

Boston -- Marriott's Boston Custom House

Steps away from whale watching, your Marriott extended stay hotel has what families need including a kitchenette, suites, and DVD players when the kids are all tuckered out. You can even stay in and enjoy the sights, with the observation deck on the 27th floor that offers panoramic views of the historic city.

Washington D.C. -- Hotel Helix

Choose the Dupont Circle location for the ultimate in the American learning vacation. And if you feel the nation's capitol is getting a little rough on those not old enough to be elected to public office, head back to the Hotel Helix where their Kimpton Kids program makes sure you have everything you need to care for your kids. Complimentary cribs, high chairs in the restaurants, and a child safety kit will give you peace of mind. And for fun? Family bunk bed, anyone?

Los Angeles -- Magic Castle Hotel

For the little wizards in your life, check into the Magic Castle and that's your ticket to the very exclusive club where up-and-coming magic makers and the big guns hang out as well. But magic watchers must be 21 and over (can you say parent date night?) with the exception of the weekend brunch, when the whole family can attend. Full kitchen, pull-out couches, breakfast, and a pool round out the perfect family experience. Once the kids have mastered the moves, you're only minutes away from Universal City where you can get a whole new kind of thrill.

San Francisco -- The Fairmont Hotel

Smack dab on Union Square, The Fairmont Hotel offers you and your family the best location in the city. Hop on the trolley, or enjoy what's right outside your front door. Mostly, your kids will get a huge kick out of hanging out in the Tonga Room where tiki decor and a rain storm will entertain the whole fam. Amenities for kids include everything from Diaper Genies to kid-sized robes. Babysitting is also an option.

Miami -- Fontainebleau

Right on the beach, that's all you need in Miami with kids. Grab your beach chairs and pull yourself up to the ocean for the best views in Miami. Or sign your little ones up for FB Kids and kid-friendly adventure awaits! Also, movie night for kids, so the adults can hit the club. P.S. For your tech kids, every room is equipped with an iMac.

Chicago -- Best Western Grant Park

Steps from museums, with beautiful water views, the Best Western Grant Park is a perfect choice for the family travelers to Chicago. You can also upgrade to the kitchenette room so you can travel with kid-food. And you can bet kids will be all over the outdoor pool when not chilling out at the lake.

Nashville -- Gaylord Opryland

Between the live music and the amusement parks, Nashville is a great city getaway for the family. But Gaylord Opryland takes it up a notch. It's the Summer of Shrek, where you'll get the full-on movie star treatment with the "Dreamworks Experience" hanging with the cast members of Shrek, Kung Fu Panda, and Madagascar. Also, if you're a cornholer (and who isn't?), there's the End of Summer Cornhole Tournament on August 17-18. It's a good time.

Atlanta -- Staybridge Suites Atlanta Buckhead

Kitchen in the room, baby pool, lots of walkable places to dine when no one can survive a big walk or cab ride. The Staybridge Suites in Buckhead is a fab family-friendly spot in a great location. If you get tired of dining out, there's a BBQ you can use to cook out in style. Also, breakfast buffet!

Minneapolis -- The Grand Hotel

When you arrive at the Grand Hotel, your child will be presented with a KimptonKids welcome gift, and a kid-sized animal print robe. I know! Additionally, the staff is ready to direct you to every kid-friendly activity in Minneapolis. Did I mention there was also a pool?

Are you heading to the city for a summer family vacation?

Wide Open

How to Find Military Discounts on Memorial Day

Post by April Peveteaux

It's Memorial Day weekend, and you know what that means: Sales! While we're used to seeing red, white, and blue banners all over car dealerships, shopping malls, and grocery stores, if you're a member of the military, you might be able to snag an extra super duper deal this weekend.

Shopping and remembering our service men and women may not seem to go together in the purist sense, but if stores are going to be offering discounts willy-nilly, why not throw in something extra for those who sacrifice so much?

10 Patriotic Movies to Make You Thankful on Memorial Day

Post by April Peveteaux

It's time to kick back and enjoy the Memorial Day weekend everybody. And while that usually means heading to the beach, lake, or your neighbor's backyard, it's possible those outdoor plans might take a backseat to the weather.

Which is great! It will give you time to actually ponder the meaning of the weekend and give thanks to the men and women who serve our great country. Why not get yourself in the patriotic mood by firing up your DVD player, Netflix account, or whatever it is you kids do today to watch movies.

Here are 10 fantastic patriotic flicks to get your holiday weekend off to an All-American start.

Patton

Does it get any more rah-rah American military tough guy than Patton? Chronicling the infamous General's career culminating in the great war -- World War II -- we truly understand that it's men that fight wars, not countries in this classic.

Glory

Another side of the Civil War, Glory explores the all-black unit of the Union Army and makes us realize what was truly at stake when our nation was almost ripped apart.

Saving Private Ryan

If you watched Saving Private Ryan with dry eyes, you may have a hydration issue. The interior lives of men charged with rescuing the last living brother on the battlefield gives us an intense and emotional look at soldiers making the ultimate sacrifice.

Red Dawn

With or without a remake, everyone over the age of 30 still gets a thrill when you hear the cry of, "Wolverines!" This pro-America, anti-commie teen kickass film probably made more than one 18-year-old enlist in the military as soon as the credits rolled.

The Best Years of Our Lives

For the first time, this 1946 Oscar winner explored what happens after the war is won. The oftentimes painful story of three men returning to their home town and trying to fit into their lives, while carrying an unbearable weight, and scars that won't ever heal.

Apollo 13

Sometimes brave Americans aren't fighting on the battlefield, but exploring space and risking their lives in the pursuit of knowledge, and our country's reputation. This true mission to the moon story has it all -- danger, valor, and good looking dudes.

The Manchurian Candidate

If you dig the idea of conspiracies at the highest level, and hate communists, you'll love the original Manchurian Candidate starring Frank Sinatra and a truly evil Angela Lansbury.

Born on the 4th of July

Sure you'll enjoy Tom Cruise more in Rock of Ages at the theater. But this is one of his most impressive roles of his career, as Cruise gives us a complicated look at what it means to serve your country as wounded Vietnam veteran, Ron Kovic.

The Patriot

Arguably the best Revolutionary War movie ever made, Mel Gibson stars as a man who wants to avoid the war but cannot ignore it as it becomes personal.

The Hurt Locker

Watching a war that is still waging is the best way to be reminded of how much our military men and women risk every day. This Oscar winning portrayal of the mentality of the modern warrior is intense, and makes you glad there are people willing to risk life and limb for the rest of us at home. And how much that costs them, when the war is over.

What's your favorite patriotic movie?

3 Red White and Blue Cocktails For Your Memorial Day Buzz

Post by April Peveteaux

Here's hoping most of you are already headed out to enjoy your long holiday weekend. You've packed your beach towels, you've gassed up the car, you've taken out a loan for the cost of said gas, and you're on your way! Sure Memorial Day celebrations often include a body of water, a grill, and an ice cold beer. But while you're getting your backyard BBQ on, let's stop and remember the reason we celebrate Memorial Day by imbibing patriotically.

That's right, drink for America with these three incredibly patriotic red, white, and blue cocktails.

All-American Jell-O Shot

Start your party off with a bang by passing around a red, white, and blue Jell-o shot. It's fun, easy, and your guests will thank you while they're nicely buzzed. Just do this:

Mix one package of clear gelatin with 6 ounces of water and stir until dissolved, then add 6 ounces of vodka. Allow to cool, but not set, in refrigerator. Do the same with one package of blueberry Jell-O and one package of strawberry Jell-O.

Before they set, bust out your shot glasses and fill 1/3 of glass with red Jell-O, followed by clear gelatin, followed by blue Jell-O. Allow to chill for at least two hours before serving.

Raspberry Pacific Breeze

Add a raspberry garnish to this blue curacao, lemonade, vodka recipe from Food & Wine and you've got all your bases covered. Plus, you've got a completely delicious and refreshing beverage that shows the world you're a proud American. Drink up!

Pop Rock Cosmo

And for the grand finale, I took a page from The Food Network and garnished a traditional beverage with blue pop rocks. Simply whip up a cosmo like so:

1 oz vodka
1/2 oz triple sec
1/2 oz Rose's® lime juice
1/2 oz cranberry juice

Pour over ice in a shaker, shake until chilled. Take a lemon wedge to wet the rim of a martini glass, and dip in pop rocks. Pour chilled cosmo into martini glass and get ready for an explosion in your mouth.

What are you serving up this weekend?

5 Ways to Amaze With Burgers on the Grill

Post by April Peveteaux

With that mad cow only a few miles away from my very own home, one would think that burgers would be off the menu. However, when you take a look outside and the sun is shining, and summer is merely around the corner, it's time to bust out the grill. And what goes better on the grill than any other thing in the known universe? Burgers.

And that is why I've searched the Internets for the most amazing twists on the humble burger. So you can totally show off to your dinner guests this weekend.

Don't forget the fries!

Here are five unbelievably amazing ways to prepare your burger this weekend.

Ultimate Umami Burger

There's a reason this SoCal chain started small and is now making people wish they lived in California. The umami flavor is something you taste, can't describe, and then crave forever. Luckily the good people at White On Rice Couple have provided us with a recipe. The secret? Fish sauce. That's right, fish sauce.

Gorgonzola Stuffed Burgers

You should always ask the experts when you're looking for a fab burger recipe, and the good people at Cheeseburger.Net surely know what they're talking about. As seen with their recipe for the cheese stuffed burger. But not just any cheese -- that's Gorgonzola, people.

6-Year-Old With Autism Blows Us Away on the Piano (VIDEO)

Post by April Peveteaux

Get ready for your weekend inspiration, everybody, with a side of musical accompaniment. What's better than that? I can tell you what's better than that, if Billy Joel himself waltzed into 6-year-old Ethan's house and sat down on the bench for a rollicking rendition of "Piano Man." Not that Ethan's version needs any help. Did I mention Ethan was only 6 years old?

Yes, this kid is only 6 but can pound that piano in a way that will put the average "Chopsticks" player to shame. Also, his passion for singing is quite extraordinary.

Check out this amazoids video.

See this video on The Stir by CafeMom.

That kid is so down with that "Piano Man" feeling and it shows in his performance. I also am suspicious that after 12 years of lessons, he might have surpassed my own piano skills by age 6.

More from The Stir: Teen With Autism Defeats Bullies to Take Homecoming Princess Title

All of this is to say, the way we look at children on the spectrum should include the positive as well as the challenges. After all, the autistic and Asperger kids (and adults) that I know all have things going on that are -- in whatever way -- exceptional. Be it a special talent, skill, or simply perspective.

I'm sure while you're in the middle of working to make sure your child with autism is getting what he or she needs, it can be difficult to look at what is amazing about that same child. But hopefully this video of Ethan reminds us all of the multi-faceted personalities and abilities of those who live every day on the spectrum.

Bravo, Ethan!

What's your kid's special talent?
