'50 Shades of Grey' Movie's Direction Is Still Up in the Air

Post by Maressa Brown

Just when we thought we had as-close-as-you-can-get to official Fifty Shades of Grey movie news, thinking that Price & Prejudice and Atonement director Joe Wright would most likely be getting the director gig on the film, Deadline is reporting that it was all a big fat premature LIE! Okay, not exactly. Apparently Wright was a likely candidate to direct, but it wasn't a sure thing as everyone seemed to think. And now he's reportedly had to bow out due to a scheduling conflict.

Still, the site reports that the "script by Kelly Marcel is in" (whoo hoo!), and "there’s no question that Focus, Universal, and producers Mike De Luca and Dana Brunetti are beginning the search for a director." However, insiders warn the process has just begun. But even with Wright out of the running, there's still a short list of potentials floating around ...

The possible contenders include Gus Van Sant (who shot that notorious screen test with Alex Pettyfer), Bennett Miller (known for Moneyball), and TV director Patty Jenkins (who previously worked on Entourage).

Ehhh ... Sounds like one bummer after the next! At least with Wright, it seemed like we'd get a gorgeous, artistic flick with some Oscar potential. Maybe it wouldn't be the most graphic film, but his art house track record would have ensured the flick would come as smart as it would have been sexy.

With Moneyball, Miller proved he could turn out a gripping sports drama, and he also got an Oscar nod for directing Capote, but neither of those credits seems, well, sexy! How exactly could his style translate to Fifty Shades? Jenkins has the critically acclaimed film Monster and Entourage under her belt, but again, not seeing how she's the perfect fit.

Why aren't they considering directors with some steamier credentials? Like Steven Shainberg (Secretary), Sofia Coppola (female and directed subtly sexy Lost in Translation), Todd Field (Little Children and In the Bedroom), or Adrian Lyne (9 1/2 Weeks, Fatal Attraction, Lolita, AND Unfaithful)? If they're afraid that bringing on a director with a sexier IMDB page will cause the film to steer too much then into softcore territory, that's just plain silly!

Then again, at this point, who cares? Pick someone -- anyone! The suspense is killing us!

Who do you think should direct the film?

Strange Clue May Help Authorities Identify Suspect in Twisted Child Abuse Case

Post by Maressa Brown

When four horrifying videos, featuring a middle-aged man sexually assaulting a young girl believed to be between 7 and 9 years old, hit the Internet on May 2, Danish police who discovered the clips contacted U.S. authorities. They knew the videos were taken in April, but they couldn't be sure in what country they were filmed. Until they spotted a seemingly innocuous detail in the background: A pretzel bag!

Authorities say they believe the acts were committed here in the States, because a Frito-Lay Rold Gold bag of thin pretzels appears in the videos, and that particular packaging is made only in the U.S. Canada's pretzels have different packaging and French language descriptions. Crazy, huh?

While the pretzel bag serves as an important clue, it's obviously not enough. The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has publicly released five photos of the man -- identified as "John Doe" -- carefully taken from the four videos. There's a warrant for his arrest, and authorities are asking the public to help identify the man, who is described as being between 45 and 55 years old with a heavy-set build, a wreath of light brown hair, a brown mustache, and a beer gut. Investigators also believe he is either a musician or collects musical instruments, being that guitars, speakers, a keyboard, electronic equipment, and a musician stand and stool also appear in the room where the videos were made.

The details surrounding this story are enough to make your skin crawl, but fingers crossed they're what may make all the difference in helping authorities -- and the public -- track this creep down.

As Brian Korzak, a special agent with ICE's Cyber Crimes Center, said, "Without the public's help, we may not be able [to find the man] and more importantly stop the ongoing abuse of this victim."

Special Agent Patrick Redling added:

Since the videos were created so recently, we feel there's a child in danger right now. And so we're looking to your help to get the word out about this particular investigation so hopefully we can catch this child sexual predator, take him off the streets and save this child from more harm.

Anyone with information should call the ICE on 1-866-347-2423 from the U.S. & Canada or 1-802-872- 6199 from anywhere else in the world. You can also visit the ICE Tips site.

'Bachelor' Fiancee Catherine Giudici Accused of Cheating on Sean Lowe With One of His Best Friends

Post by Maressa Brown

Another day, another Bachelor rumor involving the impending DOOM facing Sean Lowe and Catherine Giudici's engagement. This time, Star magazine is trying to convince us that, despite claiming to be “bursting with excitement” over their future "I do"s, Catherine is eyeing another man ... Wait, not just that! She was actually caught with another man at a party at the Palazzo apartment complex in L.A. earlier this month.

An "insider" claims that Catherine was "rubbing [Dancing With the Stars pro] Julz [Tocker]'s arm, whispering in his ear, and giggling." Say it isn't so!

The way the tab is selling this story, you'd think she had taken off her engagement ring and was cheating on Sean by making a sex tape with another C- or D-list celeb. So silly!

My theory: Julz is totes gay and/or BFFs with Sean (he has tweeted pics of him and words of encouragement to him in the past 48 hours). Sounds like Catherine just happened to be getting friendly with one of her fiance's colleagues. The HORROR!

But okay, let's humor Star. Say Julz isn't gay (ha). Say Catherine really was getting a bit flirty with another guy. And if that was the case, well, so what?

I've been told I'm a naturally flirtatious person, which I believe is how some people interpret the fact that I'm often friendly, warm, open, and outgoing -- with just about everyone. Of course, when you're attached, you have to be aware of how your friendliness could be misperceived, and you have to know when to draw the line. Because come on, are we completely supposed to act aloof, distant, and cold with other people once we're attached? Of course not! As long as everyone knows where you stand, a little flirting is no big deal.

How do you feel about flirting while attached? Do you think this rumor about Catherine cheating is totally silly, too?

Angelina Jolie's Plan to Have Her Ovaries Removed Is More Controversial Than It Seems

Post by Maressa Brown

Angelina Jolie's story of her decision to undergo a prophylactic double mastectomy has captured the attention of the entire country, and she's being applauded for her bravery and candor. Most would agree it seems as though she's been through enough, but there's another challenge ahead ... People reports she is also planning to undergo surgery to remove her ovaries.

She's made the difficult decision for the same reason she chose to have her breast surgery: As she's a carrier of the BRCA1 gene, her doctors say she still faces a high risk of developing ovarian cancer, which her doctors estimate at 50 percent.

And yet, as brave and wise and inspiring as her decision appears to be, it's also a controversial one.

Doctors like Dr. Andrew Weil and Dr. Lissa Rankin, author of Mind Over Medicine: Scientific Proof That You Can Heal Yourself, explain that these kinds of statistics -- "you have 50 percent chance of developing this illness" or "87 percent of that one" -- is called "medical hexing." That's when a doc gives patients a poor prognosis and then they have negative outcomes. Dr. Rankin asks, "Do we really want to poison our minds with such fear-based thoughts that then force us to make decisions about whether or not we will electively cut off perfectly healthy body parts?" What's more, she notes, "Few diseases result from a single gene mutation. Only about 5 percent of cancer patients can attribute their diseases to heredity."

That said, as Dr. Rankin says, and I couldn't agree more, that Angelina still deserves a lot of credit for trusting her intuition, going with her gut, making a medical decision -- or "writing The Prescription" -- that she felt was right for her.

One of my biggest gripes with conventional docs in general is that they are all too often second guessing the patient, telling us what to do instead of the other way around when we are the ones who know our bodies the best. Her mother, Marcheline, lost her life way too young to ovarian cancer. Who could blame Angelina for being afraid of following in her footsteps?

While it's unclear when Angie will actually undergo the procedure, some doctors recommend patients have it by age 40 or when a woman is done having children ... That's because getting pregnant after an oophorectomy is medically impossible. Of course, there's always IVF with a donor egg, surrogacy, or adoption, but I'd venture to say it's doubtful Brangelina will have any more kids of their own. Hey, at least that means no more tabloid tongue-wagging about how she's pregnant again! Then again, stopping at six seems like a wise choice anyway.

What's your take on Angelina's elective surgeries?

Seductive Yellow Cake With Pink Frosting Recipe Is Worth Cheating On Your Diet For

Post by Maressa Brown

When it comes time to get a cake for a birthday, party, family get-together, or just for fun, sometimes it's easier to pick one up from the supermarket or a local bakery. But what if you could be reassured that you'd be able to make one just as good -- no, better -- with an amazing, delicious recipe?

This is the cake recipe, which the popular NYC bakery, Amy's Bread, uses for their "Pink Cake," a delicate vanilla butter cake paired with heavy, super-sweet buttercream frosting. Uh, yeah. Wow. Who even needs a special occasion as an excuse to try their hand at this one?

Simply Delicious Yellow Cake with Pink Buttercream Frosting adapted from Amy's Bread from ABountifulKitchen.com

Cake Ingredients:

3 cups unbleached all-purpose flour, sifted
1 tablespoon and 1 teaspoon baking powder
3/4 teaspoon kosher salt
1 1/4 cups and 3 tablespoons milk
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 1/4 cups and 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, slightly softened
2 3/4 cups and 2 teaspoons sugar
5 eggs

Cake Directions:

Preheat the oven to 350ºF. Grease the cake pans. Line the bottoms with rounds of baking parchment then dust them lightly with flour. Shake out the excess. Or use Baker's Joy baking spray that contains both oil and flour, so you don't have to flour the pan. With Baker's Joy, put the parchment liner in after you spray the pan.

In a large bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt and whisk them gently for even distribution. In a separate bowl combine the milk and vanilla.

Using an electric mixer with a paddle attachment, cream the butter and sugar on medium speed until it is light and fluffy, 3 to 4 minutes. Add the eggs gradually, mixing well after each addition, scraping the sides and bottom of the bowl often.

Lower the mixing speed to medium-low and add the flour mixture to the butter in 3 parts, alternating with 2 parts of the milk mixture, beginning and ending with the flour. Mix just until it is evenly incorporated. This is a thick, fluffy batter, resembling whipped cream. There should not be any lumps or dry pockets of flour remaining. If the batter has a curdled appearance, it has not been mixed enough. Increase the speed to medium and mix for another minute or until it is thick and fluffy.

Divide the batter equally between the 2 prepared cake pans. Weighing the batter into the pans is the most accurate way to do and ensures that both layers will be uniform in size and finish baking at the same time. You'll have approximately 930 g/32.8 oz. of batter per pan. The pans should be about 2/3 full. Smooth the batter so it fills the pans evenly. Place the pans on the center rack in the preheated oven. Bake them for about 35 to 40 minutes, or until the cake is almost ready to pull away from the side of the pan and a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out with a few moist crumbs. Rotate the layers carefully from front to back after 20 minutes for even baking.

Cool the pans on a rack for 10 minutes, then invert them onto a wire rack that has been sprayed with cooking spray and lift off the pans. To prevent cracking, carefully right each layer so the top side is up and the parchment-lined bottom is down. Cool them on the rack completely. Before frosting, be sure to remove the parchment from the bottom of each layer. While the layers are cooling, prepare the frosting.

To assemble the cake, place one layer, top side down, on a flat serving plate. Cut several 4-inch-wide strips of parchment or waxed paper to slide under the edge of the layer to keep the plate clean. Using a thin metal spatula, spread the top of this cake round with 1/2-inch thick layer of frosting, leaving a 1/4-inch unfrosted border around the edge. Place the second layer top side up on the first, aligning the layers evenly. Spread a generous layer of frosting around the sides of the cake, rotating the plate as you work so you're not reaching around the cake to frost the other side. Try not to let any loose crumbs get caught in the frosting. Let the frosting extend about 1/4 inch above the top of the cake.

Starting in the center of the cake, cover the top with a generous layer of frosting, taking it all the way to the edge and merging it with the frosting on the sides. Try to use a forward-moving, circular motion, not a back-and-forth motion to avoid lifting the top skin of the cake. Rotate the plate as necessary. Use the spatula or a spoon to make decorative swirls. Slide the pieces of paper out from under the edge of the cake and discard them. Store the cake at room temperature, preferably under a cake dome, for up to 3 days.

Sweet Buttercream Frosting Ingredients:

7 1/2 cups confectioner’s sugar
1 1/2 cups snsalted butter, slightly softened
Generous 1/3 cup poured (not rolled) fondant
1/4 cup milk, whole
1 tablespoon + 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 kosher salt
1 to 2 drops red food coloring

Frosting Directions:

In a mixing bowl, using an electric mixer with the paddle attachment, beat 21 oz. or 5 1/2 cups of the confectioner’s sugar, the butter, fondant (if using), milk, vanilla, and salt in the bowl until they are smooth and creamy, 2 to 3 minutes; start out at low speed and increase the speed to medium when the powdery sugar has been moistened.

Gradually add the remaining sugar 1 cup at a time until the frosting is of good spreading consistency, scraping the sides and bottom of the bowl often. You may not need to use all of the sugar. The frosting should be stiff enough to hold its shape but not so stiff that you’ll be unable to spread it easily on the cake.

Add 1 or 2 small drops of red food coloring and continue beating the frosting on medium-low speed until you have a uniform pale pink color. This frosting is heavy but it should still have a fluffy quality.

The frosting can be used immediately or stored in an airtight container at room temperature, but it should be used within 3 days.

Khloe Kardashian Gets Braces and Comes Clean About the 'Work' It Takes to Look So Good

Post by Maressa Brown

We love Khloe Kardashian -- maybe even more than any other Kardashian or Jenner -- because she's real and honest and tells it like it is. Kim may be getting Botox every week for all we know and attempting to keep it quiet, but when Khloe does something to tweak her appearance, she's all out and proud about it. Like how she tweeted last week about her new dental work ... Like many adults, Khloe revealed she got braces -- more specifically, she's straightening her teeth with Invisalign. She joked on Twitter, "Thank you Dr. [Kevin B.] Sands for being the best dentist ever! If only we could all be put to sleep like [my husband Lamar Odom]." Ha!

This admission comes right on the heels of her interview in Redbook's June issue, in which she revealed various tips and tricks for accenting her assets and distracting from the parts she's not so thrilled with. I'm finding Khloe's candor about what she does to look her best seriously refreshing! Not to mention useful!

Though we should love ourselves as we are, there's always a little something here or there we want to tweak or pull attention away or toward. I was brought up on my mom's many tricks for dressing "slimmer," so I'm a bit brainwashed not to wear white or horizontal stripes or busy prints, which is completely annoying.

But at the same time, I have always wanted to find styles that flatter my pear-shaped figure. Like I gravitate to A-line dresses that show off my small waist while flattering my wider hips, and I steer clear of cap-sleeved tops, which don't do anything for a woman whose upper arms -- no matter how many tricep toning she does! -- likely won't ever look like Michelle Obama's.

Similarly, Khloe admits her arms are "the first place I'll gain weight and the last of the weight to go. I'm insecure about them, but there are ways to disguise them."

She confesses:

I've learned to invest in cute cardigans. There are so many sheer and crocheted ones that are airy and you can still wear them with a little sundress.

Good call! I've done it myself.

Don't get me wrong. It's not that we should ever feel we need to invest in layers of camouflage to hide what we perceive as flaws. But ultimately, wearing clothes that suit your figure or getting a minimally invasive cosmetic treatment like Invisalign or whitening your teeth or getting laser hair removal can definitely boost confidence. And there's never any shame in striving for more of that.

What are some tips and tricks you've used to accentuate your assets?

'Teen Mom' Maci Bookout's Baby Daddy Must Be Trying to Win Her Back

Post by Maressa Brown

Former Teen Mom star Maci Bookout may be in a happy -- albeit long-distance -- relationship with Taylor McKinney, but that doesn't seem to bother her ex and Bentley's daddy, Ryan Edwards. Having broken up with longtime girlfriend Dallis Connell and proposed to Maci on Twitter back in December, he appears to still be single ... and still be possibly pining for the mother of his son.

While it appears to have been edited or taken down, Ryan reportedly posted a photo taken on a beach, along with the caption, "If I just had the love of my life with me @MaciBookoutMTV." And before that, he tweeted, "@MaciBookoutMTV happy Mother's Day we love you!" Awww. No wonder fans of the former couple are rooting for the pair to get back together.

Still, Maci seems resistant to the idea, and it's probably in her best interest.

As sweet as it would be to see Bentley's parents back together, it's called a breakup because it's broken. Maci must have her reasons for steering clear of a reunion with Ryan. And I've got a feeling that her rationale isn't just limited to the fact that she's attached to Taylor. (It's not like any of the Teen Mom stars -- or any reality stars, for that matter -- have trouble breaking up with one guy to go out with another!)

More likely, she feels it's healthier for them to remain friends. And quite possibly, she feels that a strictly platonic relationship between Mommy and Daddy is what's best for Bentley. I can't see the harm in that, but I could definitely see how there might be trouble if they tried to get back together and failed. She's already been down that road by reuniting with Kyle King -- and we saw how well that worked out!

Come to think of it ... it's possible Maci's rejection of Ryan is actually an example of how a Teen Mom has learned from her mistakes! Gasp! If that is the case, good for her. A few of her co-stars -- cough Jenelle? -- could stand to grow up and do the same!

Do you agree Maci's wise to steer clear of a reunion with Ryan?

Office's 'Vegan Food Only' Policy Is a Major Slam to Meat Eaters

Post by Maressa Brown

No matter where you work, anyone who works in an office environment seems to have a common gripe: The neverending flow of junk food! From doughnuts in the morning to pizza for lunch, cupcakes for a special occasion, cookies someone with a penchant for baking always brings in, and candy that's seemingly offered up by the pound, it can feel like having amazing self-discipline is a must if you want to stay on track. Another possible solution: Working at a place like the nonprofit organization, Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, which actually has a policy mandating that ONLY vegan food may be eaten in its office. No kidding!

The organization advocates for healthy eating, preventive medicine, and ethical clinical research, so they enacted the policy as a way to practice what they preach. They give potential employees a heads-up about the rule when they send an offer letter. Yep, they mean business. At PCRM, it's "go vegan or go home." Literally.

Apparently, employees do go home ... and eat meat or dairy, and the general feeling about that is "don't ask, don't tell." Ha! How crazy, huh?

I've gotta say, this is extreme. While I appreciate what the organization is trying to promote, and it sounds like they're doing a good job inspiring their employees to eat healthier overall and share healthy, homemade breakfasts and lunches, they're missing the mark. Though it has notable benefits, going vegan isn't necessarily for everyone. Nor is it necessarily going to ward off weight gain or other health problems. There is a LOT of vegan junk food out there, from candy bars to fried foods to uber-processed foods, many containing processed soy, which is frequently used as a protein substitute in vegetarian/vegan prepared foods and has been linked to cancer risk.

Furthermore, what about people with special dietary needs? Being hypoglycemic myself, I know I don't feel very well if I don't eat certain sources of lean protein -- often dairy or lean meat -- along with complex carbs. I wouldn't be surprised if other people are in the same boat, and should they not be allowed to work at PCRM if they refuse to eat a vegan substitute? That just doesn't sit well with me, nor should it with an organization focused on smart nutrition and preventative medicine.

What do you think of this workplace policy? How would you feel if your company said "go vegan or go home"?

Beyonce's Show Cancellation Convinces Everyone That She's Pregnant

Post by Maressa Brown

If the Beyonce pregnancy rumors have been at a dull roar since the Met Ball, consider them on FULL blast today. The diva has canceled tonight's show in Belgium and is "awaiting word from her doctors before making a decision" on tomorrow's show, which is also scheduled at the Sportpaleis in Antwerp. Her publicist cites "dehydration and exhaustion" as the cause. Uh huh! More like "pregnant with baby number two," amirite?! Okay, maybe, maybe not.

Although there are many signs that could possibly point to her expecting a sibling for Blue Ivy -- and this certainly seems like a tell-tale one -- all we know for sure is that she needed a break.

Exhaustion and dehydration is no joke -- nor is it uncommon when you're a superstar traveling the globe on a grueling tour. Just look at Lady Gaga, Rihanna, etc. I'm not sure who can make it through one of those without having to "call out sick" at least once! These performers may seem like Superwomen, but they are only human. And burning the candle at both ends like they're obviously trying to do on tour is bound to catch up with anyone.

That said, let's not be outright naive. E! reports that Beyonce's own rep is remaining silent on the possibility of a pregnancy. Why not just outright deny it? What's more, Bey just recently talked about wanting more kids, and she didn't drink any alcohol at the Met Gala. Now this.

Guess we will know one way or the other in due time. In the meantime, we should be applauding her for knowing when enough is enough and taking care of herself. Mama-to-be again or not, that's the sign of a real Superwoman.

Do you suspect Bey is expecting baby #2? Do you admire her for putting her well-being above her work?

And it might be the most romantic revelation we've heard from the intensely private but clearly passionate couple.

She writes ...

I am fortunate to have a partner, Brad Pitt, who is so loving and supportive. So to anyone who has a wife or girlfriend going through this, know that you are a very important part of the transition. Brad was at the Pink Lotus Breast Center, where I was treated, for every minute of the surgeries. We managed to find moments to laugh together. We knew this was the right thing to do for our family and that it would bring us closer. And it has.

And Brad gushed right back about his love to London's Evening Standard:

Having witnessed this decision firsthand, I find Angie's choice, as well as many others like her, absolutely heroic. I thank our medical team for their care and focus. All I want is for her to have a long and healthy life, with myself and our children. This is a happy day for our family.

So sweet. And while it may initially seem crazy to feel like a deeply difficult personal health challenge like this could actually bolster your relationship, I completely get where Angelina's coming from. Going through something like this with your partner can be an incredibly eye-opening experience. It's a true test of love -- and you come out of it knowing exactly where you stand.

For example, look at someone like John Edwards and how he handled his wife's cancer ... by cheating on her and landing them in divorce court. Ugh! 180 degrees from that, I know a husband who donated his kidney, so that his wife, who suffers from a kidney disease and was on dialysis, could get a healthy one.

As my husband and I have faced several surgeries and health worries over the past six years together, I've felt reassured that he'll always be there for me, support me, and take care of me. And well before we said our vows, I pledged to be by his side to take care of him no matter what. As far as I know, there's almost no better illustration of commitment, devotion, adoration, love.

And no matter what tabloids would have us believe, that's obviously what Brangelina has for one another -- now more than ever.

Has a health crisis ever brought you closer or pulled you apart from your partner?

'Iron Man' Stunt Goes Wrong and Gives Moviegoers 'Dark Knight' Flashbacks

Post by Maressa Brown

As far as gun violence and terrorism go, this past year may have been one of the most harrowing and devastating in recent memory. Not that Hollywood cares. While fretting that Fifty Shades of Grey won't get enough play at the box office if it isn't R-rated (aka devoid of graphic sex), they're content to keep churning out flicks filled with violence or that are being promoted with violent imagery. Though, we don't have just Hollywood to blame. Consider the ridiculously moronic move on the part of a Missouri movie theater, the Goodrich Capital 8 Theater in Jefferson City, this past Friday.

In an attempt to promote Iron Man 3, they had an actor dressed in black, wearing body armor, and carrying a fake rifle walk into the theater. Yep. Not even one year after The Dark Knight shooting, the theater's management was somehow okay with that!

There were other actors around who were dressed as officers and another as Iron Man. But because it wasn't made clear to patrons that this was a promotional stunt, no wonder some moviegoers freaked out and called 911!

I mean, what would anyone who had watched the news in the past year think if they saw a guy in assault gear and carrying a rifle walk into a movie theater? How could they not be reminded of the tragedy in Colorado last July, which killed 12 and injured dozens others? James Holmes was said to have worn police-style body armor when he entered The Dark Knight theater. How were moviegoers in Missouri to know this wasn't some kind of copycat nightmare about to unfold?

They couldn't possibly have known, because the movie theater did not think at all about appropriately preparing moviegoers for this stunt. Not to mention that it was a completely insensitive, disrespectful idea in the first place! Sure, it's been almost a year since The Dark Knight shooting, and it may not be the most current horror story in the news right now, but the tragedy should still sting.

Thankfully, the movie theater has apologized. On their Facebook page, management posted:

We apologize and are sympathetic to those who felt they were in harm's way with our character promotion for Iron Man 3. We didn't clearly tell our customers and some people didn't realize it was for entertainment purposes only.

Let's hope this royal screw-up is a lesson learned -- for this Missouri theater and any other company that doesn't think about the possible repercussions of downright brainless promos.

How insane is this? Are you shocked that someone thought this would be a good idea?

Angelina Jolie Had Secret Mastectomy That May Save Her Life

Post by Maressa Brown

While Angelina Jolie's health has often been the focal point of tabloid tongue-clucking, the superficial stories have never delved into how her mother Marcheline Bertrand fought cancer for almost a decade and died at 56. Or the fact that she has wondered about her own risk of the disease. But Angelina's moving op-ed in The New York Times entitled "My Medical Choice" is a game-changer.

The famous mother of six has revealed that she is a carrier of the "faulty"/mutant gene, BRCA1, which significantly increases a woman's risk of developing breast cancer and ovarian cancer. And as a result, she chose to have a double mastectomy, which she managed to keep a secret -- until now.

And why now?

Because the actress-turned-director says she hopes other women can benefit from her experience. She says that while "cancer is still a word that strikes fear into people’s hearts," she hopes her story reminds us that we're NOT powerless. She wants women to know that through a blood test, they can find out if they're "highly susceptible to breast and ovarian cancer, and then take action."

Angelina then goes on to explain what action she's taken ... How the whole process began on February 2, with "a procedure known as a 'nipple delay,' which rules out disease in the breast ducts behind the nipple, draws extra blood flow to the area, and increases the chance of saving the nipple." Then, how two weeks later, she had the major surgery, where the breast tissue is removed and temporary fillers are put in place. She shares:

You wake up with drain tubes and expanders in your breasts. It does feel like a scene out of a science-fiction film. But days after surgery, you can be back to a normal life.

Nine weeks after that, the final surgery was completed with the reconstruction of the breasts with an implant. She reassures, "There have been many advances in this procedure in the last few years, and the results can be beautiful."

So, piece of cake, right? No way. Angelina openly admits that her decision wasn't an easy one, but it's one she's "very happy" to have made. Especially because now, her chances of getting breast cancer have gone from 87 percent to under 5. She says, "I can tell my children that they don’t need to fear they will lose me to breast cancer." Talk about being empowered, being brave, and being an inspiration.

We've always had reason to admire Angelina Jolie. She's always put herself out there, made no apologies for who she is or how she wants to live her life, but this latest move is on a whole new level. Thanks to her candor, there's no doubt: More women will be inspired to know more about where they stand, to be proactive, and to feel even more empowered to make a bold move, if necessary, to minimize their risk. And for that reason alone, Angelina deserves a standing ovation.

What's your reaction to Angelina's news? Have you been tested for your genetic risk of breast and ovarian cancer?

7 Wedding Traditions With Beginnings That May Surprise You (PHOTOS)

Post by Maressa Brown

From the minute you get engaged to even several months into being a newlywed, you're exposed to wedding traditions galore. Some you may be familiar with (very, if you've been in/to a lot of weddings) and others that may have slipped your mind completely (because you were distracted by other important matters of business like designing an acceptable seating chart or negotiating with vendors).

Case in point: When my fiance (whoops!) husband and I were on our way back from the airport after getting hitched earlier this month, one of my brilliant colleagues said I had to make him carry me over the threshold when we got home. So funny. I hadn't even thought of that. And being the history geek that I am, I proceeded to Google it to find out where the seemingly sweet tradition came from. Let me tell you -- I probably shouldn't have.

Here, that and six other wedding traditions' surprising origins that may make you see them in a whole new light ...

What wedding tradition were you most surprised to learn about? Did you skip a certain tradition because you weren't keen on its origin?

Dr. Kermit Gosnell Found Guilty: What Do His Crimes Say About Abortion? (VIDEO)

Post by Maressa Brown

As if we hadn't been facing enough horrors in this country already lately, here comes a breaking story about the trial of Dr. Kermit Gosnell, the longtime Philadelphia abortion provider accused of killing four babies and one patient, among numerous other charges. After initially splitting on two of the over 200 counts in the case -- including racketeering and conspiracy charges, as well as abortion law violations -- the jury reached a verdict today and found Gosnell guilty on three of four counts of first-degree murder. He was also found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the drug-overdose death of a patient who had undergone an abortion. However, the doctor was cleared in the death of a fourth baby.

The jury will return May 21 to hear evidence on whether Gosnell should get the death penalty, which almost doesn't seem like it should be much of a question given the atrocities carried out by this man and described by authorities.

And whether Dr. Gosnell will live or die is not the only question that remains. How this case and these horrors will go down in history is the other. Since the story broke, the national debate has surrounded what Gosnell's crimes say about abortion.

Of course, anti-abortion activists have argued that what he was doing is simply indicative of ALL abortions in this country. But to say that a man who delivered babies who were still moving, whimpering, or breathing, then "snipping" their spines is illustrative of what legit abortion providers do is completely insane. Rather, the disturbing details of what happened in Dr. Gosnell's clinic are indicative of what desperate women may be subjected to if we keep chipping away at Roe v. Wade or outright make abortion illegal again.

It's clear this man and his practice were doing something completely extreme, vile, monstrous. Not even close to anything legal. There's a HUGE difference between what Gosnell was doing and what is legal. As horrifying as this trial is, that's a difference this ruling underlined and it couldn't hurt for us to be reminded of.

What's your reaction to Dr. Gosnell's conviction?

Juices Recalled Over Fears They're Contaminated: Here's the 411

Post by Maressa Brown

Juicing is no longer one of those weird habits reserved for health nuts. We're all starting to get in on the juice fad, and as a result, fresh squeezed fruit and veggie juices have started being carried all over the place -- from Starbucks to Whole Foods to regular grocery stores. But these seemingly super-healthy juices are apparently not without their own problems. Juices Incorporated (aka Juices International and Juices Enterprises) is recalling a ton of their products, because their carrot and beet juice products have the potential to be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum, a bacterium which can cause botulism, a serious and potentially fatal foodborne illness. That's just greeeeat!

The FDA is warning consumers to steer clear of any juice products or other beverages from the company. Even if they don't look or smell spoiled.

The FDA warns that people experiencing botulism symptoms (general weakness; dizziness; double-vision; trouble with speaking or swallowing; difficulty in breathing; weakness of other muscles; abdominal distension; and constipation) after consuming carrot or beet juice products from Juices Incorporated should seek immediate medical attention.

More from The Stir: Grocery Mix-Up Causes Worrisome Recall: All You Need to Know (VIDEO)

It does bear noting that though Juices Incorporated products were previously distributed in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania, they were recently found in retail establishments and restaurants in the New York City area, and the FDA warns that "consumers may have moved the products beyond this region."

Even if Juices Incorporated products haven't made it to your town, this should still serve as a red flag. It's bad enough when foods we know aren't exactly angelic get pulled off of shelves for being contaminated, but to think we're doing something good for ourselves by eating or drinking something seemingly pure and healthy, only to find that it could make us incredibly sick? It's truly disturbing.

Thankfully, the FDA is on this case, but the more recalls and contaminations we hear about it, the more it seems we need more thorough food safety and inspection for all products that are available to the public.

Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart Need a Pricey Getaway to Keep Things From Falling Apart

Post by Maressa Brown

This time last year, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart were headed to Cannes for a romantic-albeit-working trip. But we all know no matter how blissful the Twilight lovebirds looked at the annual film fest, scandal was about to erupt later that summer! Womp womp. After everything they've been through, they're going to do it right and that means doing it UP this year. As in, sources tell The Sun Robsten's going to stay in a sweet suite at the luxe, French Riviera-facing Hotel du Cap that runs $7K a night!

In addition to enjoying their royal accommodations and working the festival, "they have their eye on doing a tour of the local museums, like the Picasso one in Antibes, and Renoir’s house," the insider says. But that's not all. From there, they'll go onto Provence, the French countryside, to visit vineyards and "camp in the grounds of these massive chateaus." Apparently, these plans stemmed from the couple deciding "they need some 'normal living'." Ha!

Okay, let's be real. There's nothing "normal" about an insanely expensive trip like this. But at the same time, I say, good for them!

We tend to underestimate the power of a romantic getaway. Sometimes, there's nothing better to bolster your own mental/emotional health and, in turn, relationship, no matter what shape it's in. Spending time alone, away from the daily grind (and/or away from a challenging living situation, like it sounds Robsten has right now) is something we tend to think of as a luxury, but it's so necessary to keep your relationship healthy and happy.

Just being away for our wedding in Florida gave my husband and me a wonderfully refreshing respite from our usual routine. We're headed to Hawaii next for our honeymoon, and while it's definitely a once-in-a-lifetime splurge, I also feel like one-on-one time in paradise is going to be an investment into well-being -- our own and our marriage's.

Let's hope this trip to France affords Robsten the same, so they can come back to the States with better chances of making it last than the last time.

Do you and your partner make it a priority to get away?

Ridiculous Restaurant Charges $120 for Egg Sandwich: Is It Worth It?

Post by Maressa Brown

First, Gwyneth Paltrow offended us all by releasing her cookbook that calls for insanely overpriced ingredients like duck eggs. Now, a restaurant called 4Fourteen in Sydney, Australia has had the audacity to offer a $120 breakfast sandwich. Yeah, forget the fast food drive-through $1 menu. Why not spend 120x more on breakfast that boasts an eye-popping price tag for being made with pan-fried duck egg, semi-dried and smoked gourmet truss tomatoes, duck foie gras, caviar, creme fraiche, shaved truffles, English cheddar, and a handmade (huh?) brioche bun? Oh, not to mention it'll be served with a side of chips and shaved truffle aioli.

I'll tell you why not. There are some indulgences that are worth every inflated penny. There are others that are not. An egg-and-bacon roll -- no matter how decadent or gourmet -- will always be squarely among the latter!

Maybe I shouldn't judge, because maybe duck eggs and foie gras are just not my thing. I'd be more apt to pay more for some really out-of-this-world, rare, gourmet chocolate, coffee, cake, caramel, special sea salt, and of course, organics that'll save me money in the long-run haul on health care.

But a breakfast sandwich? No. Some things are better kept simple and basic. It's why a $2 taco from a food truck or a $5 gyro on the street can blow your mind more than a "fancy" version at a sit-down restaurant.

That said, good thing the restaurant is only offering this totally out-to-lunch breakfast dish for a very limited time -- just during "Bacon Week." To make it anything more than a passing gimmick would be completely crazy.

Would you ever spend $120 on a breakfast sandwich? What kind of food would you spend that kind of money on?

Celebrity's Black Wedding Dress Made the Wrong Statement on Her Big Day

Post by Maressa Brown

Some celebs try to make an impression with out there style on the red carpets of events like the Met Ball. Others are just as "outspoken" with their fashion choices in their everyday lives. Even on the biggest days of their everyday lives -- like their wedding day. Hey, when you have access to and an interest in couture, why shouldn't you rock it whenever you can? But sometimes, it's clear these fashion-forward stars are just trying way too hard.

Take what 90210 star Shenae Grimes wore to her wedding to model/musician Josh Beech, which took place at a countryside tudor manor this past Friday. Her tulle gown looked fairy tale perfect, except for the fact that it was black.

Check it out ...

Come on, now. You can't tell me she didn't wear that purely for shock value! (Especially when you hear that she also walked down the aisle to, get this, house music?!) Okay, sure, maybe because she also thought it was pretty and unique and didn't give a hoot about the conventional symbolism of the hue, which is generally thought to be negativity, death, mourning, dishonesty, depression, etc. Ugh. Then again, it bears noting that it was an expensive dye in the past, so it's also associated with elegance, sophistication, power, and sexuality. Interesting, right? And sounds like better news for Shenae and Josh.

Obviously we want to convey a certain feeling or impression with the colors we choose for our wedding day -- whether it's the shade of our dress, our bridesmaid dresses, the flowers, etc. We already know white makes us think of purity, innocence, simplicity, etc. Doesn't hurt to consider the psychology of the other colors you're committing to ...

Red - Undoubtedly one of the most popular colors for a bold bride's wedding dress (actress Melissa Gilbert rocked one last month), flowers, or bridesmaid dresses, red has always been deeply associated with passion, desire, and love. In some cultures, it symbolizes purity or good fortune.

Blue - My fiance and I chose ocean blue as one of our dominant colors -- the bridesmaid dresses, his tie, some of the little decor details -- not only because we got married in Miami Beach, but because we both feel it's peaceful color. It's also associated with honor, loyalty, trust, dependability, and stability. Perfect!

Pink - You don't have to look much further than Reese Witherspoon's and Jessica Biel's wedding gowns to know "blush"-ing on your wedding day is so in right now. Seems like a smart choice symbolically, as it stands for femininity and romance.

Green - Vitality, nature, health, and some may say wealth.

Purple - Also used to be a pricey dye, so it came to symbolize royalty, elegance, and wealth. See: Sofia Coppola's dress.

Yellow - A favorite for flowers/decor or shoes, yellow usually calls to mind optimism and cheeriness. But experts warn not to pair it with certain other colors (like black, which can remind your guests of bumblebees) and to know it doesn't work on every skin tone if you're considering it as a bridesmaid dress color.

Orange - Excitement and energy, enthusiasm, warmth, confidence, satisfaction, and a passion for life.

How do you feel about black wedding dresses like Shenae's? Did you consider color symbolism when coordinating your big day?

'Mad Men' Recap: Don Draper Pulls a Christian Grey and Gets Exactly What He Wants

Post by Maressa Brown

In tonight's episode of Mad Men, "Man With a Plan," the "mad merger" has actually taken effect and Cutler Gleason and Chaough is movin' on in to Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce's two-floor office. Yup, Peggy's back, along with Ted, who continues to be Don's foil in every way. He's selfless (he gives up his seat for a secretary in a meeting), he takes meetings with the creatives seriously (and takes Peggy seriously), and he can even fly a plane (so he and Don can take an impressive meeting with client Mohawk Airlines). Also, he can't hold his liquor during a one-on-one brainstorm with Don for Fleischmann's margarine. What a goody two shoes stand-up guy!

Nonetheless, Don's the real man with a plan. In addition to beguiling Ted and the newbies (except for Peggy, of course) with his charm and eloquence, he pulls a Fifty Shades of Grey-like strategy on Sylvia to see just how far his mistress will go for him ...

Calling him up after a fight with her husband, Arnold -- which Don happened to overhear when his elevator conveniently stopped at their floor on his way to the office -- Sylvia tells him she "needs him and nothing else will do." He gives in and meets her in a hotel in the middle of the work day. But then -- likely because he's freaked out that she's falling for him and is going to out them -- he flips a switch and begins acting in a wildly over-the-top way, ordering her to crawl on the floor for his shoes, telling her to get naked and stay in bed and be at his beck and call for 48 hours, delivering her a fitted designer red dress to wear and then strip out of, etc. Well, hello, Christian Grey!

But his motivation isn't to take their relationship to some new, BDSM-inspired level. Instead, it seems like he may have been scheming all along to push Sylvia to her breaking point -- literally, to make it seem like it was her idea to end the affair, which she does.

More from The Stir: 'Mad Men' Creator Explores What the 'End' May Look Like for Don Draper

So now is it back to try his hand at marital bliss with Megan? Not so fast. Don can't even seem to focus on what she's saying -- something about going on another trip to Hawaii. Then, Bobby Kennedy is shot (and ugh, side note: when Pete's aging mother, who is now living in his apartment, wakes him to tell him "that Kennedy boy" has been shot, and he thinks she's having a senior moment, it just sent chills up my spine ...). And as Megan sits crying, watching disturbing footage of the assassination on TV, a cold, distant Don offers no comfort.

Several episodes back, we thought Old Don would be back this season, but we were wrong. This isn't the drunk and/or depressed womanizer we've seen before. This is a whole new Don -- one who's self-centered, downright devious, quite possibly, at this point, without a soul.

What do you think about the scheme Don pulled on Sylvia?

'Mad Men' Creator Explores What the 'End' May Look Like for Don Draper

Post by Maressa Brown

Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner may not like to tell us too much about his show, but he did sit down for a talk called "Matthew Weiner and the Wives of Don Draper" in NYC this week. Still, he wasn't happy about some of the questions that were launched his way. Like when an audience member asked if this season is about women rising above the men who appear to be floundering more than ever. Weiner's response: "Are you asking, like, because you think things look bad for the men right now, if the men are gonna end up doing great and the women are just gonna be ... This is why the show has to end, because people start to perceive the machinery of it."

Um, what?? The show has to end, because we're too interested in it hypothesizing about the storylines and themes? Because we're thinking about it too much? Ha, ooookay, Weiner!

Thankfully, he was a bit more generous when discussing specific plot lines ...

For instance, he explained how, obviously, Don's plot is the focal point for him. He said:

Don’s story is important. I pay a lot of attention to that, and everything else is, ‘Where are these people in their lives?’

Oookay. So, Don is important, everyone else is -- filler? Ha, maybe he just wasn't having a very good time expressing himself at this event. Maybe that's why the "wives" stepped in at one point, particularly when an audience member asked who made the better wife to Don. January Jones responded, "I’m not sure Don’s supposed to be married in general," and Jessica Paré said, “I don’t think any one of his relationships has been perfect.”

But then, Weiner jumped in:

I think Don likes longing more than he likes people who love him. And I think he’s a deeply wounded person, and his lack of loyalty is pretty deep because I think he doesn’t like people who know him.

Interesting ... So is that pretty much proof that Don and Megan aren't going to make it? Or that he's not going to make it with anyone? He really will end up all alone?

Well, with Matt Weiner's eagle eye trained on Don above anyone else, we'll hopefully get our answer before we have to kiss the show goodbye.

How do you feel about Weiner's explanation for why the show has to end? How about how he holds Don's storyline in such higher regard than any other?

Grocery Mix-Up Causes Worrisome Recall: All You Need to Know (VIDEO)

Post by Maressa Brown

Whole Foods shoppers deserve to be irate today after the grocery chain admitted a troubling mix-up that lead to the recall of two prepared salads. The affected products are the curried chicken salad and vegan curried "chick'n" salad, which, in 15 stores spanning across five states (Maine, Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, and Massachussetts), "may have been sold with reversed labels" on May 7 and 8. ... Yup.

That means allergens were undeclared, so people with a soy allergy may have been eating soy in the vegan salad, people with an egg allergy eating egg in the chicken salad, and vegans being made unintentional carnivores. Wow. On a second thought, mix-up doesn't even begin to cover it!

This is a major screw-up on Whole Foods' part. But the good news is that it seems like they know it! They're supposed to be known for selling food we can trust, being especially conscious and sensitive about food allergies and organic/vegan/vegetarian lifestyles. Loyal shoppers like myself expect a higher standard than conventional grocers from Whole Foods. And this incident certainly doesn't make it seem like the company's living up to that.

Then again, at least they identified the issue and are bringing it to national attention. Good damage control can do wonders and will hopefully go far to prevent any scary allergic reactions (soy and eggs can cause hives and even life-threatening anaphylaxis in people who are allergic) from occurring as a result. So far, no illnesses have been reported, according to Whole Foods. Thank goodness.

In the meantime, the affected products have been removed from stores, and Whole Foods is urging consumers who purchased the salads mistakenly to return it to the store for a full refund. Consumers with questions can contact their local store or call 617-492-5500 between the hours of 9am and 5pm EST. You can also get a full list of affected stores and more details on the FDA's website.

Unfortunately your browser does not support IFrames.

Are you aggravated by this recall or similar ones involving mislabeling?

Amanda Bynes' 3-Year Probation Sentence Could Be a Blessing in Disguise (VIDEO)

Post by Maressa Brown

Amanda Bynes' behavior as of late has been worrisome, to say the least. Given the perpetual onslaught of confounding tweets, wacky twitpics, declarations of love for the Biebs, generally bizarro stalking around NYC, it almost seemed safe to say there's no turning back for the former actress. She's appeared to have settled down in LiLo-'07 Britney-Charlie Sheen Land. But yesterday, something happened to make me wonder if maybe there's hope for her after all!

Amanda had her California-based attorney file a no-contest plea in court in Burbank, settling a case that goes all the way back to an incident in September. As you may recall, she had her car impounded on-site for driving on a suspended license. The license had been suspended a month earlier after a few alleged hit-and-run incidents, which occurred not long after she was arrested for side-swiping a police car and refusing to take a breath analyzer test. (That DUI case is still pending.)

Whewwww, so clearly, she was due for some action in court. Thankfully, it sounds like things went rather smoothly for the seemingly troubled star. All she got was three years' probation, during which Amanda is supposed to obey all laws. She was also warned not to drive without proper license and insurance and fined $300.

As the L.A. Times points out, good thing it seems like she's content to stay put in Manhattan, where she can get around without a car. But even better, I think, is that she now has the law hanging over her head in a very definitive way. Perhaps this probation could actually be what she needs to get her act together ...?

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Who am I kidding, right? Troubled celebs are put on probation all the time and continue to act like koo koo birds. Ugh. Well, at the very least, this court action ensures that if she does end up on the wrong side of the law again, there will be serious consequences ... which may ultimately encourage her to seek the help she seems to so desperately need.

Do you think this probation is a step in the right direction for Amanda?

Alleged Kidnapper Ariel Castro Is the Father of Amanda Berry's Daughter, DNA Confirms (VIDEO)

Post by Maressa Brown

No matter who you are or where you live, it's impossible to avoid hearing the developing story out of Cleveland, Ohio about the kidnapping of three young women and the horrific torture they endured over the past decade. The latest detail to emerge from the unfolding case: DNA tests have confirmed that alleged kidnapper Ariel Castro is the father of captive Amanda Berry's 6-year-old daughter, who was held along with her mother, as well as victims Michelle Knight and Gina Dejesus.

It's not exactly a surprise. But that doesn't make it any less nightmarish and important to know for certain.

I'm thrilled we live in a country with a government that says anyone is innocent until proven guitly. And yes, that includes a man accused of basically being an inhuman monster capable of "truly the worst examples of human conduct," as Cuyahoga County prosecutor Timothy McGinty put it lightly. That said, my fingers are tightly crossed that there's no need here for dragged-out, unnecessarily pedantic information culling and bureaucratic red tape when the blantant, disgusting truth is staring us in the face.

Nonetheless, Castro is being held on $8 million bail (doesn't seem high enough, if you ask me). There will be a trial. Lawyers will want various answers and details. Whether we can stomach it or not, the media is going to keep retelling the revolting details of what Berry, Knight, and Dejesus report happened in that house of horrors over the last ten years.

And yet, the bottom-line is this: What authorities believe Ariel Castro did is beyond anything our society should find acceptable or tolerable on any level. Seems to me, given the "suicide note," Castro's confession that he's "coldblooded" to cops, and now, DNA proof of his paternity, nothing here is exactly a mystery. So, with hope, this new information will help lead to a swift, merciless conviction befitting of a brutal criminal.

How are you reacting to the news about Castro's paternity?

'50 Shades of Grey' Movie Is in Good Hands With Likely New Director

Post by Maressa Brown

Get prepared to breathe a deep sigh of relief. While it's not exactly the announcement we've been waiting for, it looks like we're thisclose to Focus Features and Universal Pictures bringing a director onboard for the Fifty Shades of Grey movie ... The lucky bloke appears to be none other than Joe Wright, who directed Anna Karenina, Hanna, Atonement, and Pride & Prejudice. He makes perfect sense, being that the studio has always wanted someone with "art-house sensibilities." (Other top contenders have included Bennett Miller, Patty Jenkins, and Gus Van Sant.)

It bears noting that sources say that there is currently no deal in place, and Wright has not officially won the job. Nonetheless, all signs point to an official announcement on the horizon.

Here, five reasons why Wright is a worthy pick to steamy novel's screen adaptation ...
He's been lauded for bringing out the best in ingénues like Keira Knightley and Saoirse Ronan, so it seems to follow that he'll be able to do the same for whoever is cast as Ana. (By the way, wouldn't be surprised if Ronan becomes a strong contender for the role if the gig is handed to Wright.)
In the hands of a misguided director, there's no doubt the film could turn into a total Skinemax-quality piece of crap. But Wright's resume shows he's more interested in quality and giving scripts a high-brow, classy spin vs. a cheap, tacky, lazy treatment.
He seems to be big on taking treasured books and bringing them to the big screen in a way that pleases devoted fans.
He's British, just like screenwriter Kelly Marcel and E.L. James, so maybe that will help them all get on the same page with the artistic vision for the flick.
He's won countless nominations and awards for his films -- from the Golden Globes to BAFTAs to Oscars -- so under his care, who's to say Fifty couldn't be an Oscar contender?
He's said to sometimes to compose his shots after classical paintings. Could make for a film that's as visually appealing as it is sexy.

Whether or not you're psyched about Wright being brought onboard, a director deal being sealed can only mean one exciting thing: The race to cast Ana and Christian will get real. No more games. It's ON.

How do you feel about Joe Wright being the potential director?
