You can use the System Configuration Utility or the new Software Explorer in Windows Defender. Take a look at the two sections to get control over your startup applications and speed up your computer:

Disabling auto-start applications with the System Configuration Utility

Click on the Start Button and key in msconfig and hit Enter.

Click on the Startup tab.

Remove the check next to any items that you do not want to startup and click OK.

Disabling auto-start applications with Windows Defender

Click on the Start Button and type in Windows Defender and hit Enter.

Click on the Tools from the top menu bar.

   Click on Software Explorer.

   Hit Show for All Users.

Select an application and then click either Remove or Disable.

Don't forget to Subscribe!

Speed up external hard drives

Windows Vista operates external hard drives that are connected with USB differently than internal drives. Write caching is disabled so that you can safely remove the drive at almost any time. This is a great feature for USB thumb drives that are frequently inserted and removed from your computer. But if you have a large hard drive that is in an external enclosure that you never disconnect from your computer, write caching is also disabled which can decrease performance.

This tweak is going to show you how to increase the performance of your external hard drives by turning write caching back on as well as activating advanced performance. Let’s get started :

1. Click on the start button, then right click on Computer and select Manage.
2. Click on Device Manager on the side menu.
3. Expand Disk drives and locate your external drive from the list.
4. Right click on the drive and select Properties.
5. On the Policies tab, select Optimize for performance.
6. Next, check Enable write caching on the disk and Enable advanced performance as shown below.

7. Hit OK and reboot.

Enjoy the increased performance!

Don't forget to Subscribe!

Disable User Account Control (UAC) only for Administrators

I'm sure you are well aware now of the advantages and disadvantages of UAC. It is great for non-admin users because it protects their computer from themselves. For advanced users, it can be a much different story causing many annoying authorization pop-ups. This is most common when you are doing a lot of activities that require admin rights such as installing applications and configuring Windows Vista after a fresh install. There is one practical solution to this issue that will help you with the UAC pop-ups if they annoy you and still benefit from the security of UAC.

This can be achieved by adjusting the local security policy to essentially disable UAC for administrators while leaving it enabled for low rights users. When you are using your PC for normal day-to-day use, log in with your low rights account. If you need to install a bunch of applications and make major system configuration changes then log in with your admin account. With fast user switching in Windows Vista you can easily switch between your accounts with little effort.

Follow these steps to disable UAC only for administrators :

Click on the Start button and type in secpol.msc and hit Enter.

Expand Local Policies and then Security Options.

Scroll to the bottom and locate "User Account Control : Behavior of the elevation prompt for administrators in Admin Approval Mode".

Right click on this setting and select Properties.

Set the value to Elevate without prompting.

   Reboot.

Don't forget to Subscribe!

Change Registered Owner of Windows

The registered owner and organization can be easily changed in Windows by changing two registry keys.

Follow these steps to get started :

Click on the Start Button and type in Regedit in the search box and hit Enter.

   Navigate through HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/ SOFTWARE/ Microsoft/ Windows NT/ CurrentVersion.

   Modify RegisteredOwner and RegisteredOrganization.

   Reboot to see your changes.

Don't forget to Subscribe!

Change Windows Vista Product Key after install

Do you need to change your product key so that you can activate Windows Vista properly? Right click on the Command Prompt shortcut and select Run As Administrator.

   At the administrator command prompt, type in "slmgr.vbs -ipk <insert your="" product="" key="" here="">"</insert>

<insert your="" product="" key="" here=""> To activate windows after changing the key, run "slmgr.vbs -ato"</insert>

<insert your="" product="" key="" here="">
Don't forget to Subscribe!

</insert>

Extend Windows Vista Trial to 120 Days

Windows Vista is the first windows operating system to let you use a trial version for 30 days before buying. It's a really great move for Microsoft, especially in light of how little benefit you get from upgrading to Vista in the first place. There's a soon to be well known trick that can extend the trial period up to 120 days.

If you right-click on the computer icon on the start menu, you'll see the basic system information window, and you'll also see the amount of days you have left to activate :

Looks like I only have 12 days left… or do I?

If you are not locked out of your computer

Open up an administrative mode command prompt by typing in cmd into the start menu search box, and then hit the shortcut Ctrl+Shift+Enter to launch in administrative mode.

Now run this command from the prompt :

    slmgr -rearm

It will take a little while, but eventually a dialog will pop up telling you to reboot. Do so, and you'll see that the activation period has been reset to 30 days.

Note that if you want to get a full 120 days out of this tip that you need to use this command on day 29 or 30 of your trial mode. You can only use this command 3 times before Microsoft smacks you down.

If you are already locked out (Reduced Functionality Mode)

You can still reactivate Vista if you have more resets left. If you've already used up all 3, then you are out of luck, but if not, you can follow these steps to unlock your computer again.

First, Open up Internet Explorer, and type C:\ into the address bar. You'll be prompted for UAC.

Now type in C:\Windows\System32\ into the address bar, and find the cmd.exe executable. Right-click it and choose "Run as Administrator".

Now use the same method as above (slmgr -rearm).

You should see the message saying that the computer is rearmed. You'll probably want to restart the computer at this point.

Don't forget to Subscribe!

Install Windows Vista without product key

Don't feel like typing in your product key before installing Windows Vista? It is now possible to install any version of Windows Vista and use it for 14 days before having to enter a product key and activating it.

While on the product key screen during install, just hit the Next button. You will be presented with a new screen that allows you to select the version of Windows Vista you would like to install.

Don't forget to Subscribe!

Disable USB storage device write (make them read-only)

In the corporate world, a lot of time is spent on locking down computers to minimize the risk of confidential information leaving the company. With the popularity of USB storage devices in recent years the problem for large corporations has exploded. Almost all users want to use USB storage devices to move data around. With the size of USB storage devices increasing so much in recent years, the risk is increasing as more and more data could possibly be stolen or lost accidentally.

In Windows Vista there is an alternative that will allow your corporate users to be able to read from USB storage devices but not write any data to them. Effectively turning on USB storage devices for all users but making them read-only. This way users can still read information off of USB storage devices that a third-party vendor may provide data on while preventing the employee from writing any data back to the storage device.

To setup read only USB storage device operation, follow these steps below:

Click on the Start Button and type in Regedit and hit Enter.

   Navigate through HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \SYSTEM \CurrentControlSet \Control.

Right click on Control and select New and then Key. Call the new key StorageDevicePolicies.

Right click on StorageDevicePolicies and select New and then Dword. Call the new dword WriteProtect.

Right click on WriteProtect and select Properties. Set the value to 1 and hit OK.

The computer is now configured to disable writing to USB storage devices.

Don't forget to Subscribe!

Moving From WordPress.com to WordPress

Before we begin, there’s just one thing you need to know : you can take it with you, but you can’t redirect it. Basically, it means that if you’ve established yourself well in the search engines using your wordpress.com domain name, you have a mountain to climb when you’re starting on your own domain with your own installation of WordPress.

The best thing to before embarking on this journey is to assess what the best course of action would be for your particular case. If you’ve been blogging at wordpress.com for a while and have a long standing readership and search engine rank, it may be wise to mothball it and put up a notice explicitly stating that you’ve moved to a new location with a link to your new blog. Then set up your new blog and start fresh.

If, however, you haven’t truly dug your heels in at WordPress.com, have used your own domain name, or just really want to start over with all your posts on your own self hosted version of WordPress, readership and search engines be damned, then follow along. It’s really quite simple.

Install WordPress

In order for this to work, you must make sure you have your own domain name registered, a hosting account set up, and WordPress installed. Once those elements have been met, then you can start the moving process.

Export Your WordPress.com Posts

WordPress decided to create its own XML file format which makes it much easier to transfer data between WordPress installations, whether it’s WordPress.com, WordPress MU, or just plain WordPress.

Log into your WordPress.com account and navigate to Manage > Export. (Note : If you currently manage more than one blog under an account, you’ll need to select the blog you wish to move from the drop down option next to the title and then go to the Export screen.)

If you’re part of a collaborative blog, then you can select your name from the author drop down box before clicking on the Download Export File button which will only export your posts with their associated comments. Otherwise, leave the default All Authors to export all the content.

You should be prompted to save a .xml file; make sure to put it somewhere safe and don’t lose track of it because you’ll need it in the next step.

Import Your WordPress.com Posts Into WordPress

Log into your new installation of WordPress and navigate to Manage > Import. On the import screen, you’ll see a list of import options; only concern yourself with the one that says WordPress.

From the WordPress import screen, browse to find the .xml file you just downloaded from WordPress.com and then click on the Import File and Upload button.

In an ideal world, you’d be finished, but there is one thing you need to be aware of : You can only upload a file of about 2MB (may vary depending on your host). If you have a large amount of content on your WordPress.com blog, you may need to export posts by author and do multiple runs of the WordPress import, or find a way to manually break up the WXR file without corrupting it.

Now it’s up to you to learn how to blog with your own installation of WordPress, which means you’ll need to set up your permalinks, customize your profile and settings, choose your themes, and an array of other wonderful things. But, for the most part, you’re done.

source optiniche.com

Don't forget to Subscribe!

Animate your Start Menu user picture

In early builds of Windows Vista, testers were shown a new 3D interface powered by the Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) that was filled with animations of all sorts. This interface was very cool looking. However, because of delays, Microsoft had to cut the use of WPF in the UI.

Thankfully, there are some very talented developers out there that have made utilities to bring back the excitement of the cut features. The one I am covering in this article, is the animated user picture shown on the Start Menu.

Video : 3D User Pic in Windows Vista

Using a great utility called 3D User Picture, you can easily make your start menu look just like the video above.

Download 3D User Picture from Ave's Vista Stuff.

Extract the files, run 3duserpic.exe and click on the Start Button to see 3D User Picture in action.

Note : 3D User Picture requires a DirectX 9 compatible graphics card. However, on some computers that have underpowered video adapters will see a performance hit when running the transparent glass effect. One way to speed up Windows Vista and still get the benefits of aero, such as flip 3D and taskbar thumbnails, is to disable glass transparency.

Click on the desktop and select Personalize.

   Select Windows Color and Appearance.

   Uncheck Enable Transparency.

Disable min/max animations

The new animations in Windows Vista look great for the first month or so but then they can become an annoyance since they feel like they increase the amount of time it takes to minimize and maximize a window. If you can live without the minimize and maximize animations that you can bring back the super fast feeling of your windows instantly disappearing and appearing by disabling the min/max animations.

Follow the steps below to make your windows faster :

Click on the Start Menu and type SystemPropertiesPerformance and hit Enter.

On the Visual Effects tab uncheck Animate windows when minimizing and maximizing.

   Click OK.

Don't forget to Subscribe!

Naruto Movies

The movies below have been released in Japan with English subtitles by the highly skilled team known as Dattebayo Fansubs and are all direct download.

The format of the full episodes is Real Player, and they are all in great quality. While we have come to expect this level of service with today's technology, Computer security is never consider before we plug-in and connect to public access points.

Many people do not realize, after connecting to public access points how incredibly easy it is to access other people's Windows Computers, on the same subnet, by browsing the Network (Network Neighborhood) including their own Computer.

So how do you prevent your shared folders from becoming a shared free for all? One easy way is to disable File and Print Sharing.

NOTE : The following methods can be run either before or during connecting to a Public Internet access point (either a physical connection or wireless). It's best to disable File and Print Sharing before connecting to lessen the risk of some one accessing your shares.

Two methods exist :

method 1

On Windows XP or Vista, the easiest way to disable share access is to stop the Server service. With the Server service stopped, no one can access any shares on your Computer, regardless of which Network adapter you are using (you will still be able to browse and connect to shares on other Computers).

To disable, open a command prompt by clicking on :

Start \ Run… and in the run box type cmd then click OK.

At the command prompt window type the following :

net stop server

To enable the Server service when you have disconnected from the Public access point, type :

net start server

Or you can stop/start the Server service using the Services console by clicking on :

Start \ Run… and in the run box type services.msc then click OK.

When the Services window opens, scroll down until you see the Server service, right click it and select Stop. To enable, right click on Server and select Start.

method 2

The second method on XP or Vista, is to disable File and Printer Sharing in Windows Firewall. To open Windows Firewall click on :

Start \ Run… and in the run box type firewall.cpl then click OK.

On XP - When Windows Firewall opens, click on the Exceptions tab and uncheck File and Printer Sharing, then click OK.

On Vista - click on Allow a program through Windows Firewall, then click on the Exceptions tab and uncheck File and Printer Sharing, and click OK.

When you have disconnecting from the Public Internet access, don't forget to enable File and Printer Sharing in the firewall.

If you want to disable Windows Firewall File and Printer Sharing from the command prompt, type the following command :

netsh firewall set service FILEANDPRINT DISABLE

To enable File and Printer Sharing :

netsh firewall set service FILEANDPRINT ENABLE

If you run a different firewall software other than Windows Firewall, you can block access to File and Print sharing by creating rule to not allow TCP ports 137, 138, 139 and 445.

Remember, the best security can only be implemented in layers. Disabling or locking down Windows shares is one way to prevent unautorized access or data loss. Running a firewall is another way.

Although running anti-virus or spyware software won't stop someone from stealing your data, it can prevent a malicious person attempting to plant a virus or unwanted program through an unprotected share.

Don't forget to Subscribe!

Create A Password Reset Disk In Windows Vista With A USB Drive

With Windows XP built in password reset disk utility, you can create a password reset disk so that you can easily bail yourself out of a jam in the event of a forgotten password. The only problem with using the password reset utility on XP is that it requires a floppy drive. Back then that was an acceptable solution, but these days, the floppy drive is pretty much history.

With Windows Vista, the requirement for creating a password reset disk has changed. Now you can select any media, including using a USB drive to reset your password.

To create a USB password reset disk on Windows Vista, click on Start \ Run and type Control Userpasswords in the Start Search box. In the Programs list, click Control Userpasswords and follow the steps below :

Plug in the USB drive you want use to create the password reset disk.

Click on Create a Password Reset Disk under Tasks.

In the Forgotten Password Wizard welcome screen, click Next.

On the next screen, select the drive letter for the USB drive you used in Step 1, and click Next.

In the Current user account password box, type the password for the user account, and then click Next. If the user account does not have a password, leave the password box blank.

When the progress bar reaches 100 percent, click Next followed by clicking Finish to close the wizard. You can also disconnect the USB drive if it is no longer needed. You may also want to label the USB drive as a reminder that it is the password reset disk for future reference.

Now that you created the disk, to use it when you have forgotten your password, follow these steps :

Plug in the USB drive you used to create the reset disk, and boot Windows Vista normally.

At the login prompt click Reset Password and click Next at the Reset Password Wizard.

On the next screen, select the drive letter next to The password key disk is in the following drive list and click Next.

At the next screen type a new password, and type it again in the confirm field. Also type a hint that will remind you of the password if you forget it.

Click Next then click Finish to close the wizard.

Logon on to Vista with the new password.

Using a USB drive with the password reset utility, can be run on all editions of Windows Vista. Once you have created the password reset disk, it can not be used to reset a password for another Computer (only the Computer where the utility was run against). Also, consider keeping the disk in a safe location, since anyone can use the disk to reset the password and gain access to your Computer.

Don't forget to Subscribe!

Cancel Automatic logon in Windows XP

If you've configured Windows XP to automatically login earlier, and want to cancel the auto-logon, try any of these methods :

Method 1

Click Start, and then click Run. In the dialog box that appears, enable Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer check box, and then click OK.

Method 2

Click Start, Run and type rundll32 netplwiz.dll,ClearAutoLogon

Method 3

Use this method only if you've configured the automatic logon using the registry manually. Because, automatic logon procedure using Control Userpasswords2 or using Tweak UI does not involve Winlogon \ DefaultPassword key at all. Free video content has been provided over the Windows Update service, allowing selections of several nature videos.

This tool does not use as much CPU power as you may think, as some video rendering is performed by the graphics card (GPU) and is automatically paused when not in view (during tasks such as gaming). This substantially reduces the processing load in the majority of situations.

Follow the steps below to get Windows Dreamscene installed on your computer. Before you continue, make sure that you have Windows Vista Ultimate edition. Windows Dreamscene can not be downloaded and installed on any other version.

Click on the Start Menu and type in Windows Update and hit Enter.

Once Windows Update loads, click Check for Updates.

Under the Ultimate Extras section, check the Windows Dreamscene option and hit Install.

After Windows Dreamscene is installed you may need to reboot.

After a reboot, right click on your desktop and select Personalize.

Next, choose Windows Dreamscene Content from the dropdown menu.

Browse and select the video file you want to use and hit OK.

Your selected video file will now be displayed as your wallpaper.

Extra Windows Dreamscene Content Videos

After a short while you may become bored of the stock videos that come with Windows Dreamscene. Below are some sites that I use to download additional videos that I use as my Dreamscene wallpaper. Some of these sites offer free downloads while others are not. If you find a video you like keep in mind that you can always edit it to shorten it in Windows Movie Maker.

       Microsoft HD Content Showcase

       AeroXperience Forum

       WinMatrix 2

Don't forget to Subscribe!

Boost your performance with ReadyBoost

Windows Vista has introduced a clever new caching system that can take advantage of your existing high-speed storage devices (such as USB Drives and Memory Cards). This should boost performance when performing disk intensive tasks. Some flash memory devices are up to 100x faster than a standard hard disk, so it makes sense to use these to cache common files.

ReadyBoost works with SuperFetch to store information that can be accessed quickly from the cache on startup, rather than relying on slower reading from the hard disk.

There are several requirements that your flash memory device must meet to be used as a ReadyBoost device :

At least 256 MB in size

The device must be USB 2.0

Capable of 2.5 MB/s read speeds for 4 KB random reads spread uniformly across the entire device and 1.75 MB/s write speeds for 512 KB random writes spread uniformly across the device

At least 235 MB of free space.

It is recommended that you have between 1-3 times the amount of ReadyBoost cache as physical RAM. However, ReadyBoost devices are limited to 4GB max.

Assuming you meed the minimum requirements, plug your device in to a USB 2.0 port and wait for a Windows Autoplay dialog box to pop up. Select the Speed up my PC option from this menu.

You can then set the amount of space on the device that you wish to allocate to ReadyBoost (you may as well use the maximum possible, up to the 3x RAM recommendation). If your device is not compatible or is too slow, you will be informed of the reasons at this point.

Users with low amounts of system RAM (512MB - 1GB) will notice the biggest performance increase, and those with 2GB or more may only notice marginal gains.

Don't forget to Subscribe!

Control Drag And Drop Options With Your Keyboard

How many times has this scenario occurred?

You need to edit or modify important files or documents and decide that you want to copy them to another location on your hard drive as a precaution. After selecting multiple files, you left click and drag them to another folder.

But just before releasing the mouse button to drop into the folder, you realized that you had left clicked on the selected files, instead of right clicking, which will cause the files to move (not copy) forcing you to start over again.

If you had right clicked on the selection of files then dragged and dropped, Windows will display the context menu giving you the option to Copy, Move, Create Shortcut or Cancel the operation.

Instead of starting over again after left clicking, you can control the operation that will be performed, and still select the same options in the screen shot above by using the Keyboard.

Here's how to do it :

Before releasing the mouse button :

To force a Copy - hold down the Ctrl key (Control)

To force a Move - hold down the Shift key

To force a Create Shortcut - hold down the Alt key

To force a Cancel - press the Esc key

You will notice the cursor will change to reflect the selected operation.

NOTE : this tip will only work when moving files or folders on the same drive. By default, Windows automaticaly copies files or folders between dives and partition when using left click.

Don't forget to Subscribe!

How To Hide Your Computer From Windows Network Neighborhood

If you share Windows folders, you probably noticed that when you browse Network Neighborhood ("My Network" in XP or "Network" in Vista), Windows broadcast your PC name to anyone browsing on the same subnet.

While this is no big deal, you may want to hide you Computer from being discovered, but still be able to connect to your shared folders.

To hide your computer from being browsed in Network Neighborhood, open a command prompt by clicking on Start \ Run… and typing the following :

net config server /HIDDEN:YES

If the command was executed successfully, you should see "The command completed successfully." or you can verify with the following command :

net config server

and check that the "Server hidden" status is Yes :

Server Name \\COMPUTER1
Server Comment

Software version Windows Vista (TM) Ultimate
Server is active on
   NetbiosSmb (COMPUTER1)
   NetBT_Tcpip_{B49D9893-C247-4353-886A-850FA5A9EF7F} (COMPUTER1)

Server hidden Yes
Maximum Logged On Users 10
Maximum open files per session 16384

Idle session time (min) 15
The command completed successfully.

Now reboot your Computer and when Windows has restarted, you will no longer be able to see it when browsing the network. When you want to connect to a shared folder, you can map the drive using the following syntax from Windows Explorer (Tools \ Map Network Drive…)

\\computername\sharename

So if I wanted to connect to the shared folder called media on my computer named COMPUTER1, I would map it as :

\\COMPUTER1\media

If you want to unhide your Computer, type the following at a command prompt and reboot :

net config server /HIDDEN:NO

Remember, hiding your Computer from the Network is by no means secure or a substitute for security. You should always secure your shares when necessary with proper permissions.

Don't forget to Subscribe!

Use checkboxes for multiple file selection in vista

This tip is a perfect example of why people should not give up on Windows Vista.
